Hiking the Bridge to Nowhere in Los Angeles County

  • The Bridge to Nowhere is one of the most popular trails in Southern California as it features a stream that you cross multiples times and ends at a bridge that was built as part of a failed road between Wrightwood and Azusa. The hike is great, especially when it is warm and you can swim (but don't go when it is too hot or you will not have any fun). This is my third time hiking this trail and I wanted to share it since I always enjoy it. Let me know what you think in the comments.

    Never cross in the water too close to the top of a water fall. My brother slipped on moss at Switzer's falls & fell 60ft. He was airlifted out & miraculously survived, but w. Life threatening injuries.

      "Slippery when wet"
      As dirty as that saying sounds, it's so true. I had a similarl situation however, I didn't fall 60ft. I went up real close to this waterfall and I slipped on some wet and SHARP rocks they pierced my thumb and bruised my leg. I was bleeding profusely and then I so luckily ran into an old couple that had this sunflower powder stuff that filled in my gashed open hand.
      Anyways, be careful. And I hope your brother gets well.

      Lucky he survived...in Fish Canyon people would climb up to the waterfall...if they slipped it was a recovery not a rescue....sad....

    We used to hike to the narrows all the time when I was a kid (late 70s, early 80s) just past the bridge is what we called the narrows (because it's a narrow canyon) and we'd camp, pan for gold and play in the water. We only saw a few other people back then. I don't think there was an official trail either, the way we went was 3 miles each way if I remember correctly. I stumbled across this video trying to find out if the bridge was still standing.

    Thanks for sharing. Takes me back. Back in the 70's we used to hike in Fri afternoon, camp and swim all weekend just past the bridge and come out Sunday afternoon. Back then you could enter the tunnel that the road would have gone into after crossing the bridge from the backside. You could see the unfinished conctrete and railings. So that's where the road ended when they quit. Great times.

    Great hike. I've done that one about 4 times over the last handful of years w/ my son's boy scout troop. typically in the fall. It's a great hike. parking is nuts of course, so get there early. We've seen the bungee jumpers every time. I like hiking down to the water past the bridge to cool off and pump fresh water for our water bladders. Just make sure you're bringing enough water for the hike to stay hydrated and trail snacks help too.

    Nice... besides all of the trash, it's a beautiful hike. Heading back just past the bridge there is a trail that will take you down to the water. There is a mine on the left to explore, just a few hundred yards from that there is a beautiful waterfall on the right about 100 yards in. Just past Heaton Flats Campground there is a mine to check out up the the left.

    At 5:40 there is a view of some great banded metamorphic rock to the left of the water. Literature online confirms that this trail provides access to migmatite, a type of metamorphic rock in which the lighter felsic minerals were in process of flowing out of and away from the darker mafic minerals that have a higher melting point. Was going to do this trail some years back in order to retrieve some samples of such rock. Never got around to it. Too damn old and feeble now. Next time you go, maybe pick up a sample of migmatite for a paperweight. It's not all that common generally. Thanks for posting.

    I get why the waters cold, due to it being snow runoff. I'm embarrassed to ask this because I grew up in the San Gabriel Valley in city named Rosemead but my question is the water, Is that melted snow from the Sierra Nevada? I thought the Mulholland aqueduct brought that into L.A. So my guess is this water is runoff from Big Bear, Mammouth, Wrightwood, Mountain High?
    Damn that was so beautiful, I moved out of Cali to Henderson NV. And after seeing this vid, I'm missing all the trails like John Murrell in Pasadena. But Azusa Canyon has the best streams and cliffs to jump off of.

    • @src4526

      i'd say the San Gabriel Mountains is where the water is coming from. i remember going on a hike there when i was in middle school. long time ago. it's nice to see that it's still a beautiful place. i miss that part of SoCal sometimes.

    • @michaelsaintjude
      @michaelsaintjude 5 лет назад

      @@src4526 Agreed, that is so awesome that the San Gabriels had that much snow to where there's still run off. That is a very good thing after so many years without it. Hopefully with a huge emphasis on HOPE the rainfall in the valleys and snowfall in the Sierra Nevadas go back to as much normalcy as can be.
