I believe Transformers was somewhat inspired by Gundam and Japanese Mecha anime. Either way, Gundam still predates the Transformers franchise.

Born in 1971, I grew up with Grendizer, Candy, Captain Herlock, Space Cobra, Hokuto No Ken or Cat’s Eyes. They were fantastic and very different from each other. But Grendizer is still a must in my country for people of my generation. Anime like Ulysses 31 or Captain Future are still missing in the video but choice must be done. 😊
There will be a live action adaptation of Cat’s Eyes this year here (France).

Well, Naruto came out in 2002 so there wasn't any openings in 2000 or 2001, while no matter how popular it was at a relese, beating the Gundam SEED opening from that year would not be possible either way, so I wouldn;t really call it that subjective just because Naruto was not immidiately on it. We do not know from where the "most popular" came from so it might have been legit (from sources like Oricon which is a japanese music statistics organization, or other similar places before oricon was estabilished). And come one, that Gundam SEED opening back then was literaly a definition of an "anime opening", it was everywhere and would be what a lot of people did think of when they heard the term "anime music" for like 10 next years, as I remember it still being the "typical anime opening" when I was getting into anime, so no shoot Naruto would beat that one with it's first opening 😅 By the way I really recommend checking all the Gundam openings, they are bangers and deffinitely deserve some more love 😁
