    One little thing I do with my water/PVA mix is add a drop or two of India ink to a 100cc, especially when ballasting or making darker material loads. Just adds even a bit more shadow, shading, and variation.
    I enjoyed your demonstration, especially the way you approach the cling wrap. I "put away" some items the same way - on the deck.

    Glue a steel washer to the card to aid quick removal via magnet and use a glue gun to make contours.

    For real...??? Far FAR easier just to use a square of foam with some load glued on top - doooooh.........!
