Thanks for this video. I have been watching your training videos for much of the past year and finally got my 8 week old standard Labradoodle a month ago. She has never NOT had a house line on thanks to you guys. But now that she is just over 3 months old and has doubled her weight, she is so strong. When I let her out of her ex pen or crate to start integrating her into the house more, she just pulls and wants to check everything out. We have gone thru some of the house repeatedly so it's not new territory. She will soon be too large for the ex pen to contain her and I need to get her more calm when out of it, but it is not working. She gets a lot of good exercise in the yard twice a day and often a little more on a 3rd occasion and many potty outings. Also lots of training and knew many things within several days of coming home. She has an excellent sit/wait at the back door, for meals and to come out of crate and pen. But that self control goes out the window when out in some of the house. I just need her to slow down. Any suggestions? Thanks.
you said in the yard so I assume she is too young to go for walks due to vax.... my puppy was the same but now that I take her on 3 walks a day she is a lot better in the house... be patient your training is going to pay off 100%

Is it ok to use a collar and house line with a toy poodle. I keep reading how they can get tracheal issues as they're so small. We're going to be getting a toy poodle and I wonder if the house line should be used with a harness instead or is a collar ok? Many thanks from Scotland x
My puppy gets really frustrated and jumps against the line toward what she wants and barks/growls quite aggressively. Any tips for preventing this? I feel like I can only get her to focus on me if I have treats and as much as she might like it, I don't want to be feeding her treats 24/7 in order for her to listen to me. Thank you for your videos and I would really appreciate any extra guidance you may have!
How do I get my puppy used to a collar, she absolutely hates it and goes manic and is unable to settle with it on. Would a harness may be more comfortable for her as she is quite small
Nice video. What would you suggest me for moving from a house to an apartment with a 12 week springer spaniel puppy? He has no training just freedom to run around in the backyard. Thanks a lot.
Fading as in weaning away from using the line? You will start to do that when you cant remember the last time you needed to use it. Once your verbal commands are strong enough and there is 100% success there 100% of the time, you can start weaning the puppy off of it at that point. If they need to go back on it after a bit too much freedom, you can always go back. Happy Training! ~ Dan
Question regarding the collar settle/house line. I have a very sweet mini aussie shepherd puppy who is 14 weeks. She is definitely an alpha female and is super confident with a huge competitive drive. We've found that when we did the collar settle with a small interuption, she responded at first but quickly started fighting it. She seems to take it as a challenge and it just ups the ante for her. Even with a proper hold on her collar she will go into a full deathroll to get your arm in front of her face so she can "win" or will really fight and chew the line if you use it too much. You can distract her from it with play but she seems to find it very frustrating and makes more poor choices with it on. Also, we live in Canada and so are doing paper training for the cold winter since our puppy just holds it when we go outside. The houseline is a bit of a problem for paper training since they can pee on it and drag it behind them. Any recommendations?
Just take your puppy outside. If you take them out, stay with them, make sure they go and bring them right back in the cold is not an issue. I house broke my mastiff/coonhound mix in the middle of January in Michigan. Time spent outside housebreaking is just fine for them. My opinion is that paper training just confuses them, and is a waste of time taking much longer to housebreak onto paper then switch it to outside. They should not be spending time outside playing until they are house broke anyway so the short periods outside to potty is not going to hurt a thing. Especially since that breed is so intelligent, they will pick up on it very quickly.
Keep house-line on until you can't remember the last time you needed to use it! It's all about managing freedom and expectations. This will help: ruclips.net/video/OJaT_3RB3LU/видео.html Happy Training!
@@McCannDogs thank you. I’ve watched tons of training videos here on YT and this is the first I’ve heard of this method but I’m absolutely going to try it with my 8 month old pup we just got! Your channel has great videos.
Our 9 month old mini schnauzer still nips one of my kids and gets hyper like this at times. And he doesn’t come when called all of a sudden (adolescence?). He’s made a ton of progress in many other areas, but I’m wondering if we need to try the house line even at this late age?
Hi I have a ten week old lurcher (she 1/4 staff 3/4 lurcher) we got her at 9 weeks not collar or leash trained we did the first week without either she had way too much freedom to make bad decisions. We managed to get the collar on after the 1st week and I'm doing collar training with her everyday to get her used to me touching her neck and getting her used to a tug on the collar and not freaking out, we are using a houseline but... when she creates tension on the line she bucks like wild.. I saw ur puppy in the video doing it a little but nowhere near as much as my pup does, what do I do? I don't want her to be traumatised by the experience of having a leash, shes fine when the house line is loose I'm not letting her chew it but what do I do when she bucks... in those moments its diffuclt to lure her with food
How do you handle this activity during idle time? Yes, while training this is good. However, after we have had time to train and go to cook just saying it goes back to the same.
I hope this was the case with my bernedoodle. Once my dog starts chewing the leash or anything that he is he would not be lured by any high value treats or other chew toys. Any suggestions on how to solve that? We usually train him in backyard.

Sounds like two different training opportunities, and both are super valuable. We didn't work at all on a leave it in this video as Popcorn doesn't know that command yet and was using a houseline for the first time. Thanks for watching and commenting! Happy Training! ~ Dan
I just got a yorkie puppy, and I read that I need to put a harness on him when I put a leash on. The problem is that when he bites, he can reach my hands when I grab the harness to try to settle him down. Any advice?
When the dog gets ahold of the house line, how do you get it out of the dog's mouth without 1) "playing" tug of war with the dog and 2) getting bitten? I have a nearly-11-month-old beagle mix we got about two months ago, and he's constantly chewing on the leash, among other things.
I need some videos that show help with training toy breeds. I have a 4 month old Yorkie and I’m finding that a lot of these videos don’t work as easily with such small puppies….
Do we start the house line training immediately when they come into the home? We brought our 8 week old Labradoodle home this past weekend and she is not having the house line, she is finally getting used to her collar being on.
For sure, that will give you the best opportunity to offer good communication with timing! Check out this video where we talk about the 3 most crucial parts to owning a new puppy! ruclips.net/video/k9H4N4JO6lU/видео.html Happy Training! ~Dan
I use a 15 cm long house line :) works wonders - i actually call it an anti conflict line.. I am a big fan - but i felt bad for the pup for a sec.. How do you explain that it is okay to step on the line if the puppy i moving? No sound to try to break the wandering off - giving it a chance to not get a pop by the neck.. I am super careful with my dogs neck - espec. when they are a little as this..Still groing and developing and very prone to get injuries because of it is so soft. It was done reserach in Scandinavia by Anders Hallgren and a group of vets ( you can get the research results in several languages on Ebay, amazon etc for just a few dollars ) .. It showed that 84% of reactive dogs had neck and back injuries that no one knew about. something to consider maybe ??
Sir , I am from India I always watch McCann dog training I am having a crossbreed male 1 year friendlydog, he is basically trained dog, but he is pulling leash while I am going for walk. What can I do.
It would be great to see the same demonstration but with a 50 lb 7 month old puppy who s forcefully biting and jumping. You always use tiny puppies who are easy to control.
YES!!! I have a 40lb stubborn Bullmastiff pup. He digs his heels into the ground when I am trying to get him to move ahead with me or simply walk down the street. While some have dog pulling issues my pup is doing the opposite. He won’t move forward. Yes he will walk forward if I lure him with food, someone just don’t have treats on hand. Please use large/Giant sized breeds once in awhile to show variety in pup strength and personality. Saint Bernard, Bernese Mountain Dog, Leonburger
No it’s never too late. It’s just about your consistency, repetition and follow through. My 4 month Rottweiler puppy eventually began doing all of these things but is improving. You really have to address it and spend a lot of time with your dog: bonding, training, supervising. Your dog needs a lot of positive reinforcement so keep treats on you and reward when he’s doing good

Bringing home a new puppy in 2 weeks…how do I use a house line with 4 cats in the house? The poor pup is going to be terrorized! (Seriously looking for advice-loved house lead for my last pup when I had no cats, so now what?!)
I named my Wheaton Terrier Poppy for the same bouncy behavior. I use the line as well. I am also using a dish towel to put in her mouth so she won’t nip me. She can whip her mouth around and nip me, even with me holding her collar.😩
I’m getting a puppy this Sat I’ve been watching your videos for two days now they make so much sense. I do have a question I’m getting a German shepherd/Poodle (Shepadoodle) he will be 8weeks what size kennel will be best? I did purchase a larger crate thinking I would use it but it will encourage him to use the 🚽 in it. Please Help😅
I adopted him from a dog shelter when he was 2 months and a half. The person on charged told me that he and his little brother, that now is with another family, arrived to that shelter when they were very little (they both are children of stray dogs) and at the shelter they were always free running in the backyard with other dogs. Now my puppy is a puppy like behavior (like in this video) when he is without collar. The moment I put his collar on, not even the house line, all his energy goes out. Is this normal?
Have to dislike videos like this because while they talk about using a house lease they never give you tips on what to do when the dog does nothing but destroy the lease. I've watched a bunch of your videos now that brag about the inside lease & not one tells you how to stop your dog from destroying it. I've gone through 3 leases in a month this method doesn't work with terriers.
im worried my puppy is not busy enough.. he is so chill.

love the vid
How long the house line is?
I have tried using a house line with a 11 week old Border Collie. The issue I’m having is that all they do is chew on it.
Same with my 7week old GSP!
What did you end up doing to fix this?
Give up your frustration or give up your puppy to me.
How do I get my puppy used to a collar, she absolutely hates it and goes manic and is unable to settle with it on. Would a harness may be more comfortable for her as she is quite small
How much time should active training take per session?
I have a new puppy that is 3 months old. She is bitiing and I have been asking questions about during trainning do you use a coller or a harns?
Maybe I missed it - how long should the house line be?
Nice video. What would you suggest me for moving from a house to an apartment with a 12 week springer spaniel puppy? He has no training just freedom to run around in the backyard. Thanks a lot.
Super video, but does not work on my dane puppo 🤣
When/how do you suggest fading the line?
Fading as in weaning away from using the line? You will start to do that when you cant remember the last time you needed to use it. Once your verbal commands are strong enough and there is 100% success there 100% of the time, you can start weaning the puppy off of it at that point. If they need to go back on it after a bit too much freedom, you can always go back.

Such a cute puppy....!!!! which breed is he?
Is this safe for toy breed dogs? I’m concerned about my 3 lb toy poodles neck
I have a toy size maltipoo, it's so tiny to do grab on her collar to stop what the pup doing to dicsi
How long do you recommend using the line?
Keep house-line on until you can't remember the last time you needed to use it! It's all about managing freedom and expectations. This will help: ruclips.net/video/OJaT_3RB3LU/видео.html

What is that red ball used?

How long (cm) is the houseline?
This is a 5'(152 cm) cotton web line with a solid clip for use in your puppy management. www.mccanndogs.com/products/puppy-training-house-line

My puppy is 3.5 golden retriever. Today I took him outside for the first time. He didn’t stop for 1 sec he’s jumping hopping biting the leash hopping too much energy. How do I fix it
I'm now a little confused at teaching 'leave' with a trade and not using that for the house line.
Sounds like two different training opportunities, and both are super valuable. We didn't work at all on a leave it in this video as Popcorn doesn't know that command yet and was using a houseline for the first time. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I just got a yorkie puppy, and I read that I need to put a harness on him when I put a leash on. The problem is that when he bites, he can reach my hands when I grab the harness to try to settle him down. Any advice?
What treats do you give them? Is Raw meat a good idea??
Could you link that crate -thank you ☺️
When the dog gets ahold of the house line, how do you get it out of the dog's mouth without 1) "playing" tug of war with the dog and 2) getting bitten? I have a nearly-11-month-old beagle mix we got about two months ago, and he's constantly chewing on the leash, among other things.
I need some videos that show help with training toy breeds. I have a 4 month old Yorkie and I’m finding that a lot of these videos don’t work as easily with such small puppies….
Can I attach a house line to a harness instead of collar on my puppy please?
What if I have another dog that goes crazy when seeing a leash? Or will pull on it
Wouldn't it be better to use a harness instead of a collar? I always try to avoid collars on young puppies. Just curious
My. Pup is a cocker spaniel x she's always mouthing u can't stroke her any tips please

Thank you!
How old is the puppy? I just brought home an 8 week old puppy and dealing with the same things.
I have a 4 month Aussie. She has chewed thru 5 of the house lines. She is so full of energy, I just can't keep up with her lol
Sir , I am from India I always watch McCann dog training I am having a crossbreed male 1 year friendlydog, he is basically trained dog, but he is pulling leash while I am going for walk. What can I do.
Great video, but should a puppy be put in a crate with a collar on??? Isn't this dangerous?
How do you stop the puppy from biting and chewing the house line?
He shows in the end of the video
Can you come do this to my vicious dog
It would be great to see the same demonstration but with a 50 lb 7 month old puppy who s forcefully biting and jumping. You always use tiny puppies who are easy to control.
Thanks for watching and commenting!

My handsome boy is 51lbs and 17weeks old! I'd love to see this weight with the same experience/exercise
Sounds like a challenge, Dan!😂 I’m watching for it!

Is it too late to implement the house line on a 5 month Samoyed? Wish I knew this information earlier!
No it’s never too late. It’s just about your consistency, repetition and follow through. My 4 month Rottweiler puppy eventually began doing all of these things but is improving. You really have to address it and spend a lot of time with your dog: bonding, training, supervising. Your dog needs a lot of positive reinforcement so keep treats on you and reward when he’s doing good
It’s never too late, just like CasuanNY mentioned! You’ve got this!!!

I have a 8 wk American Spaniel. Ruffles & RUFFLES HAS MICHAEL JACKSON & JORDAN ENERGY. Doing the tips...🥵 have human babies are easier.... He's learning
i tried that..the dog eats the least..we had to resort to a chain in including the handle...she cant eat that...
What about if you’re trying to do a correction and he automatically flips over on his back?
Bringing home a new puppy in 2 weeks…how do I use a house line with 4 cats in the house? The poor pup is going to be terrorized! (Seriously looking for advice-loved house lead for my last pup when I had no cats, so now what?!)
I named my Wheaton Terrier Poppy for the same bouncy behavior. I use the line as well. I am also using a dish towel to put in her mouth so she won’t nip me. She can whip her mouth around and nip me, even with me holding her collar.😩
She's learning that she's allowed to chew on dish towels.

Buy a large crate that has a divider to make the space smaller into they grow into it.
My dog chewed and ate the leash
I also have a cat that sees the line as a toy
My puppy of almost 3 months gets depressed when I put him the house line? Anyone that could tell what could be happening?
I adopted him from a dog shelter when he was 2 months and a half. The person on charged told me that he and his little brother, that now is with another family, arrived to that shelter when they were very little (they both are children of stray dogs) and at the shelter they were always free running in the backyard with other dogs. Now my puppy is a puppy like behavior (like in this video) when he is without collar. The moment I put his collar on, not even the house line, all his energy goes out. Is this normal?
I pick up my puppy next week. I’m terrified. I need to get a long line. I have no idea what to do. Aaaccckkk
I’m so frustrated right now with my 16 week old Rocco. The biting, the jumping and the barking is stressing out the whole house
I always do some training with my puppy’s meal, he sits and so on but he whines so bad while doing it.
My puppy is chewing on the line
I forgot to put in there with it but I forgot my puppy named peanut that Lily not really a problem
Why do puppies bite so damn hard. I didn’t know they hurt that much when we decided to get a puppy.
When you cut it, make sure it's short enough where they can't chew it, but long enough to be able to grab it. Typically about 3-6 inches
