    Robert Walker slays in this movie!! Charming and creepy, like John Dall in “Rope.” And so many classic Hitchcock shots: the distorted shadows of the murder reflected in the dropped glasses, Bruno’s straight-ahead stare amidst the swaying heads at the tennis match, his sinister dark blotch against the pristine Jefferson Memorial, the cranked-up merry-go-round fight…
    Also, Pat Hitchcock (Hitchcock’s daughter) has a prominent role in this movie, and I think she did a great job!

      Speaking of Rope, the actor who played Guy is also in that movie. That’s such an underrated Hitchcock film.

So glad you have discovered that if a movie has a great script, wonderful acting performances, and creative cinematography it hardly matters how old it is or if it was shot in color. Your reactions help to keep them alive. Also, love the "Geology Rocks" shirt

    When he was a boy, Hitchcock's father, in an effort to scare his son away from lawbreaking, arranged with the local police for young Alfred to be locked up in jail for a day. For the rest of his life, Alfred was terrified of wrongful arrest, terrified of being caught up in the consequences of someone else's wrongdoing. This theme appears over and over again in his films. In this movie, notice how Bruno, after murdering Miriam, calls out to guy from behind a gate that looks similar to prison bars. Bruno is inside the bars, and Guy is outside the bars. But when the police car shows up in front of his apartment, Guy moves inside the bars with Bruno. He is being drawn behind bars by the crime that another man committed. And all of this is happening because of an entirely chance meeting of strangers on a train. Because of this random event, the innocent man (Guy) will pay the consequences for the crime of the guilty man (Bruno). This was Hitchcock's fear. See his movie The Wrong Man (1956) for any even clearer example of Hitchcock working out through his art a fear that was implanted in him during childhood from his father's prank.

    There are so, so many great Hitchcock films for you still to discover (he has more than 20 films worth watching). You mentioned that you thought more of this movie would be on the train itself. Well, if you want to go way back to a much earlier Hitchcock film, The Lady Vanishes (1938) is another excellent movie and a good portion of that movie takes place on a train. But, you really can't go wrong with anyone's recommendations when it comes to Hitchcock.

    • @Dej24601
      @Dej24601 9 месяцев назад +1

      Definitely! This and The 39 Steps (not as much time spent on a train as Lady Vanishes but is still critical to the story) are among my favorites for just having a great time watching - humor, suspense, romance, suave leading man, unique locations.

  • @joel65913
    @joel65913 9 месяцев назад +8

    One of my favorite Hitchcock movies! Tense without being showy this has one of the best villains in all of his films.
    The entire cast is wonderful, I personally love Ruth Roman (Ann in the film) and think she does a fine job even though Hitchcock didn't want her in the part, not being his typical blonde preference, but had to use her at the studio's insistence and he was very hard on her throughout filming. As others have mentioned Patricia Hitchcock who is delightful as Barbara was the director's daughter. While same nepotism may have been involved she was an engaging actress who made an impression in all the films her father used her in. She had a decent career going but opted for marriage and shortly after motherhood and quit acting.
    But everyone else is put in the shade every time Robert Walker's Bruno hits the screen. A man with deep emotional problems up until his last few films he had been typecast as the naive Ah shucks young good guy but with Bruno he scored a major achievement and a change of perception. Unfortunately he didn't live very long at all to enjoy the success. A heavy drinker who was going through a major psychological breakdown due to the failure of his marriage to Jennifer Jones who had left him for producer David O. Selznick. Shortly after the completion of this film and in the midst of shooting his next he suffered a psychotic episode, was given an injection that was meant to calm him but he had a bad reaction to it lapsing into a coma and death shortly thereafter. He was only 32. Very tragic, but the film is a wonderful showcase for him to bow out with.
    Would love to see you watch Lifeboat or Saboteur next!

      Wow, I want to party with you, bro. Totally agree with Strangers On A Train, totally agree with Shadow Of A Doubt, and Frenzy is Hitchcock's last essential film, totally agree, my favorite late-period, post-Psycho film of his.....that's what Hitchcock could do with an R rating, lol. Three great choices. Obviously love Psycho and Rear Window, but Strangers On A Train and Shadow Of A Doubt sit right beside them, with Frenzy being a close second (tied with stuff from other periods of his career like Rope, The Wrong Man, The 39 Steps or one of his other British films, etc etc..... definitely The Ring....which is one of his silent films.....and a boxing movie! lol. A boxing movie that takes place at carnivals.......and yet has a great, wild party scene with flappers! From "The Ring" (1927) to "Frenzy (1972), that's basically my bracket.

    • @joebloggs396

      I prefer Shadow of a Doubt, the acting is uniformly good through the cast and I feel the relationships are more interesting. For some reason most Americans only seem to mention it as an afterthought at most.

      @@joebloggs396 I can see that view, Joe Cotton was good in this movie (and many others - just an excellent actor) - same with Theresa Wright (great in Standers, and also excellent in The Best Years of Our Lives, and was as The Little Foxes.
      Per Strangers in a Train - Robert Walker was insanely good, while Granger Faerley? ("guy Haines' WAS SO BAD his acting was VERY poor in this movie. But the story was well written and Walker made it excellent in spite of "Guy'. I though Walkers mom wsa good as well as "Guy" ladyfriend. "Guy" was in Rope - another good very good movie, but again "guy" was the weak link, in that movie it was boyfriend/roomy that stole the show with a close follow by the great Jimmy Stewart.
      thanks for reply Joe ;-).

    • @joebloggs396
      @joebloggs396 6 месяцев назад

      @@gaffo7836 I agree with plenty on that, Farley Grainger is a weak point in Rope too (over-emoting throughout). But I like the rest of the Rope cast and the dialogue is great with lots of black humour and hints at a political undercurrent. Even Shadow of a Doubt with it's final line about the world going mad sometimes seems to refer to WW2 at the end.
      While the plot of SOAD seems the standard stranger comes to town one I do find it more hard hitting than SOAT. Somehow the obliviousness to Uncle Charley is a lot more frightening to me than some of the imo more generic looks of fear or hate that are given towards the Bruno character. His mother is better for sure. Not sure about Hitchcock's daughter in this though, it might not be her fault as her script is just that of an annoying wife.
      Some may differ in their opinions on Charley in SOAD but I feel the believability is enhanced because of the overall strength of the film. Her youthful impetuousness leads her from idolisation to telling her Uncle she will kill him if he stays. And the ending is concise and effective for me.

  • @Dej24601
    @Dej24601 9 месяцев назад +2

    Another Hitchcock with a stunning finale for the time period is the
    1940 “Foreign Correspondent.” It includes typical Hitchcock motifs- the witty and clever leading man in the wrong place at the wrong time, the courageous and intelligent leading lady, important scenes on staircases, use of airplanes, water, kidnapping, political undercurrents, a lot of humor, and plot twists. It takes place just as Europe (especially Britain) is trying to convince the US to enter WW2. It is not as polished a film as later ones, but for the budget he had and the time period, it is a lot of fun with plenty of suspense.

    Hitchcock has so many different styles of films that you can always find something to fit every mood. One of my favorites is “Notorious” starring Grant (North by Northwest) and Ingrid Bergman ( Casablanca.) It came out in 1946 right after WW2 ended and deals with war related politics. But the romance and mystery are top rate. Also it is known for a famous shot where a special crane and camera mount was built. 👍

Too bad, for she would otherwise likely have followed that coveted spot with the lead role in Psycho and beyond if things had gone according to Hitchcock’s leading lady M.O. Great movie this one. Two points to mention. The man who crawled under the merry go round actually worked at the fair & what you saw was real with him crawling underneath. Not sure how that made that scene so realistic with the people riding the horses. And on a lighter note regarding the tennis game so hilarious & crazy to watch people back then how they watched a tennis match moving their heads the way they did I think I would suffer from whiplash if I did that. You don't see people watching a game like that today as we all use peripheral vision so don't quite understand why people back then did that. Always amuzes & confuses me at the same time. I welcome any replies regarding my final comment.

      Apparently the scene of the actor crawling underneath was extremely dangerous (that accounts for him going slowly) and would never be allowed today without an official stunt person, and done using a stunt merry-go-round rather than a real one, and many safety measures in place.
      I believe the action commented on was him wiping sweat from his face with a handkerchief/bandana, not of him eating anything.

    Not Hitchcock movies, but two older ones you might really enjoy that are suspenseful and well-done are "Sorry, Wrong Number" about an invalid woman who happens to pick up the telephone party line and hears men potting to kill a woman- she can't leave her bed, but she tries to get the police and her husband to take her seriously and investigate her claim, and "Double Indemnity", about a man who is an insurance investigator who ends up engaging in an affair with a woman and plotting to kill her husband to take advantage of the man's life insurance. Both films star Barbara Stanwyck, an incredible acting talent. I'm trying to "sell" the movies without giving too much plot away because the stories are better the less you know going in! I hope you check them out, even if not for the channel, because if you love suspense I think you'll have a good time. The first time I saw "Sorry, Wrong Number", it was late at night, I couldn't sleep, and this movie had me climbing the walls by the end.

    This is a good movie, but there are so many better Hitchcock movies you haven’t reacted to yet. “The 39 Steps,” “The Lady Vanishes,” Suspicion,” “Foreign Correspondent,” “Lifeboat,” “Saboteur,” "Notorious,” and “Spellbound” are all superior to “Strangers on a Train" IMHO
    Love the "Geology Rocks" shirt. I am an amateur rockhound and mineral collector. I have collected all over the U.S., and in Ontario and Nova Scotia.

      Saboteur is partly a remake of the superior and great The 39 Steps.
      And has nobody watched Sabotage?

      Yes, I've seen "Sabotage" twice, once on a big screen at the American Film Institute theater in the Kennedy Center about 40 years ago. I have also read the book on which it is based, "The Secret Agent," one of Conrad's better novels. Good movie, but I had to end the list somewhere, otherwise I might also name a few silent movies worth watching.@@joebloggs396

    What do you have against garbagemen? They're more important than bankers, accountants, thespians, athletes, etc.

    Marion: "It was obvious what was going to happen. It wasn't a big mystery like the others."
    No, Hitchcock NEVER does mystery. He does suspense.
    By the way, Senator Morton, Guy's fiance's father, was last seen as "The Professor" in "North by Northwest." Babs was Marion Crane's co-worker in "Psycho."
    Based on Marion's shirt, are you a geologist?

    I remember an actual murder that followed this theme though I can't recall the murdered person - the Police some how figured out they were copying this movie. Interesting how they could convey a guy being a creepy person in just a little bit of lighting and a few comments made - where as nowadays they need tons of words and images and gratuitous nude shots to convey the message. I love old movies.

    All a movie in a train ?

      "12 Angry Men" took place in a jury room, not a train. Also, it was "Murder on the Orient Express".

    It is obviously not about a mystery. As is usually the case with Hitchcock it is about the tension and suspense, a tension and suspense tied to motive and opportunity...So why do so many watch and listen to murder shows and podcasts?
