Awesome interview, Spencer. We just recently watched the movie (after being told by countless people how incredible it is). Thanks for sharing the videos. Will always be a favorite film for us.
Rodriguez is so brilliant and articulate. Spencer could barely keep his mouth shut long enough to listen. He seemed to want to talk more than to hear Rodriguez.
Ignore those nasty comments, you did a fine job. Your enthusiasm of the movie and the man and his music was evident. The way you did that and the way you expressed yourself during this interview brought the listener right to the edge of this lens, Fine JOB Congratulations.
i did some research on the net through all his interviews and it seems as though they really romanticised the documentary (omitting to mention his Australian tour with Midnight Oil, among others). He was not completely forgotten. This documentary is also a wonderful tool to cross sell Rodriguez's music, so bravo to the music industry, 40 years later, still managed to market his music through new media, such as a documentary film.
Moreover, in one part of the documentary when he is visiting the music producer's house, he passes in front of a window, and you clearly see his reflection and can see a regular size video camera.
You and Chris Mathews have the same problem... the never ending question! Stop with the leading questions... keep them short and succinct and mine the gold. NEVER talk over the interviewee. This man has a lot of ground to make up. You must be the conduit only. The best interviewers now when to listen. Not a bad job and the audio was not a problem for me. Keep going.
Also he mentions shooting with his iPhone. The iPhone 1 and iPhone 3G did not offer video recording. The iPhone 3GS only had VGA 640 × 480 resolution recording, (very poor) and it is only in June 2010 that iPhone is launched with HD video recording. Malik says he started filming in 2008, so that means he was not using his iPhone until 2010, two and a half years after he started recording. Very strange.
It's amazing to me how many people in the TV industry still don't know how to properly mic and test audio before they conduct an interview of this magnitude. Please learn your craft. It's a disservice to all of us who would have loved to hear this man.
you ask mutual questions that are pretty good man, it looks like you do your research to be able to delve deeper if you can with a little spicy kick of your own knowledge into the mix man, great interview
You obviously missed the part where he mentions his *cinematographer*, Camilla Skagerström! As far as I know, he only used the iPhone for certain shots, when he didn't get the additional funding he expected from the Swedish Film Institute. For instance, the "flashback" of Rodriguez playing with his back to the audience was supposed to have been shot with a Super 8 camera, but he couldn't afford it and used an iPhone Super 8 app instead.
You should pull this video. It's really bad in that the two "interviewers" do all the talking, meanwhile they have a "wise man" sitting there with them. Please for all yer sakes pull the video.
Where do you see TV industry? Two guys with microphones are TV channel for us hmm? What I see is living room most probably home of one guy, somewhere is camera with mixing desk and I feel enthusiasm meet and introduce to people this inspirative hero, so lets go do it. My english is poor how you see but I understand almost every world!
paul -- are u in US? Did YOU play this music over and over again years ago? Or are you from SA and never heard of him? I AM from SA and we truly did assume this amazing artist was famous worldwide ----
Regarding the main producers. He said they got involved after 90% of the work was done. I would be interested in knowing what the 10% was. In my opinion, his worked would have stayed unseen. My other opinion is that is was a story built from scratch by the producers themselves and used the Malik story as a romantic line to give credibility to the whole documentary. You just have to see who is pulling the strings in the background, or as they say in the doc, go where the money is..
Hmm but he has speaking with him. They both are amateurs. This is YT channel, not fucking TV with 150 employments. They wanted to see him a do an interview. Thats all. And they did it. So enjoy his face and reaction because otherwise would be nothing here.
Spencer slow down... the guy takes his time... he is real, it was more than 30 years... he is not Justin Bieber who did it, who is fake and it took like 2 videos! if you are bored while he talks about whatever he likes, play Angry Birds in your iPad!
Hope kiwis get some feelings and compassion from this film... the worse experience in my life was being in NZ and treated like crap, sleeping on the streets, getting stolen and eating from rubbish bins..... Now Aussies recognized my effort and I own my consulting company in OZ and also I am proud of being MEXICAN... RODRIGUEZ ITS INSPIRING.....BIG MAN
Just look where the official site is hosted. SONY CLASSICS. It is no coincidence. They want to sell music. The doc was made to sell the music. Don't get me wrong, I loved the film and I love the music, but I have been working too long in the advertising world, not to see scams. Bravo hollywood!
Come on world, Rodriguez is ENTITLED to royalties from his music sales. Stinky or what! How can this be resolved? Rodrigues must have a great fan who is also a commercial litigator surely that could take it on. He is so humble, I cant see him going after them. Found this interview so irritating to watch because Rodriguez barely gets a word in cause the interviewer is constantly reframing his own questions. Blah.
Well he has won the documentary for his story. Maybe now the people of US will give him more recognition.
Awesome interview, Spencer. We just recently watched the movie (after being told by countless people how incredible it is). Thanks for sharing the videos. Will always be a favorite film for us.
Totally agree with your comment. I just wanted the guy to STF up!. Drove me nuts. Maybe he was excited by chatting with Rodriguez.
spencer, your interview was amazing, better than all the other interviews I saw. I like your style!
Rodriguez is so brilliant and articulate. Spencer could barely keep his mouth shut long enough to listen. He seemed to want to talk more than to hear Rodriguez.
Stephen the world loves you for the passion u have for your work...congratulatons! Personally, I heard every word that I wanted to hear...
By the way... I love his songs and his singing style. THANK YOU FOR THE INTERVIEW! I lie it alot.
Ignore those nasty comments, you did a fine job. Your enthusiasm of the movie and the man and his music was evident. The way you did that and the way you expressed yourself during this interview brought the listener right to the edge of this lens, Fine JOB Congratulations.
Wow! Amazing story... I must see the doc. Rodriguez has a new fan from Mexico City. Greetings!
Great interview! Thanks!

always the gracious man, how wonderful you are
Awesome, thanks for confirming that.

Very talented and YET VERY HUMBLE !
I bought the soundtrack the other day and It actually said on the back that Rodriguez will get royalties from it. :D

I interviewed them in 2012, in Seattle, Washington. I bet if you give him time he will make his way there.
I really hope so, a lot of people dont know about him and im spreading the movie the much as i can :( let´s hope he arrives some day :(
Lucky you!!! where you interview them? i wish rodriguez come to mexico :( im a huge fan!
Just listen to the Music, that's all that's required to get that Rodriguez is a Great Poet. The sun will always find a way to shine.
It's amazing to me how many people in the TV industry still don't know how to properly mic and test audio before they conduct an interview of this magnitude. Please learn your craft. It's a disservice to all of us who would have loved to hear this man.
The exposure of the film definitely will help him around the world, I'm optimistic he'll make his way there.
Thanks for your reply mate. This is crazy and so so unjust.
Thanks
KT

I hope Rodriguez gets enough money from this story and his albums........This guy is beautiful, peaceful and WISE....Love him

I liked it alot

Yep this "thing has gone to New Zealand" Rodriguez, am desperate to see the movie, difficult to get here @ mo.
paul -- are u in US? Did YOU play this music over and over again years ago? Or are you from SA and never heard of him? I AM from SA and we truly did assume this amazing artist was famous worldwide ----
such a talented musician, in my opinion someone should make justice and try to get some of the royalties other people took advantage of.
For the firt time I am proud to be Mexican.

Wow! Spencer asked questions and did not Rodriguez talk. Rodriguez is the star here.

I'll bet if he ran for mayor today, he'd win!

Hah, I wish I could blame coffee.
