- A classic military themed run 'n gun arcade shooter, Caliber .50 was developed by Seta and first released to arcades in 1989.
The game's story is set in 1972 during the height of the Vietnam war. Players took on the role of a U.S. Air Force pilot who's crashed landed in the jungles of Vietnam and must fight to escape the enemy's military compound and rescue his comrades.
Players battled it out against tanks, helicopters, fighter jets, and ground forces, in non-stop run and gun action with an arsenal of weapons at your disposal. The game seems to constantly replenish your cache of grenades. Power-ups included a flame thrower and a machine gun.
The game also had obstacles that must be avoided, such as spiked pits and landmines.
The game made use of rotary controls, utilizing the same joystick for both rotational and directional movement. This caused some issues with getting the controls to work properly in emulation with MAME.
Setting Game Controls in MAME: Under MAME's menu, under inputs for this game, set the dial analog to none. Then set the dial analog increase and decrease functions to the left and right bumpers of your controller. This way you can use the buttons to control rotation, while still using your analog stick to control movement.
You may also need to adjust the analog controls. You can adjust the dial sensitivity to increase or decrease the rate of rotation.
There was also a console port developed by Visco that was released for the Sega Genesis and Megadrive in 1991. The console version was over twice as long as the original arcade version. This is a huge plus, as one downside to the arcade version was the far shorter length of the game.
The console version had a slightly different narrative, with players taking on the role of U.S. Army Sergeant Captain Addis, in place of the U.S. air force pilot as seen in the arcade version.
One of the bright spots for this game were its colorful detailed sprites, along with a lush green jungle environment.
