Heavy Barrel - Classic Arcade Run 'N Gun Shooter (Data East 1987)

Heavy Barrel is a classic military themed run 'n gun arcade shooter from Data East (1987).
Story: After terrorists seized control of a nuclear weapons facility, a commando enters the fray in a bid to take down the terrorists and take out their leader.
The game's name actually refers to a secret weapon known as the Heavy Barrel; which is thought to be an energy cannon, that more closely resembles a giant flamethrower than any sort of a laser or cannon. The secret weapon can only be unlocked by picking up 6 pieces of the weapon as they're scattered throughout the game, mostly in crates. Picking up keys dropped by defeated enemies unlocks the crates.
Developers made use of an 8-way rotary joystick, with the controls feeling a bit unresponsive and slow. Likewise, as with many games of the 80's, this one lacked any form of an evade maneuver.
The game is very challenging too, as players will often find themselves completely surrounded by enemies, and the only way out is death. Not having an evade maneuver just seems to add to the game's complexity, its a feature that certainly would've been useful for a game like this.
Players start out the game armed with a standard gun and grenades at their disposal. Among the game's power-ups are a multi-directional shot that's really effective, the flame throwing secret weapon, and there's even a spiked ball with a chain that acts like a shield for your character.
