Nice video of the best of Portugal. I personally would recommend a road trip from Lisboa, Sintra, Mafra, Alcobaça, Tomar, Batalha, Coimbra, Aveiro, Porto, Braga, Guimaraes, Douro valley, Coa, Elvas, Evora, Tavira, Faro, Silves, Lagos, Sagres and back to Lisboa. About 10 days should do it. All you need is a small car, a gps, a phone card to track down cheaper hotels online and a great appetite for all the different food and drinks.

I'm from Coimbra. Portugal can be quite surprising for such a small country, where you can travel a few miles and spot a really wide variety of vegetation. Sintra is, just like Gize in Egypt, one of the places in the world that concentrates energy, used to be a Druid's place when of the Celts. The Portuguese also have their hands in a lot of Areas and Industries all over the World, like Nasa components, known Brand of Shoes and clothing bought in Hollywood, invention of digital paper and other cool inventions besides the famous Sextant, not mentioning big accomplishments in Sports, Music, Cinema, and so on. There's a Singer/Composer of Traditional/Popular Music, that edited one of the most wanted albums of Progressive Rock in the world. The list is endless.
Aveiro is nearer to Coimbra than to Porto. I was surprised you didn't mention any place from the North, meaning the regions of "Minho" and "Tr'as-os-Montes". People should know that the climate is obviously warmer in the South and colder in the North, but the people work the other way around. In contrast to the spirit of business you find in Algarve, in places like Trancoso you will find people that won't let you hit the road without your stomach being completely full. In Porto any stranger will greet you in the street, in Lisbon not so much. But the Portuguese people, despite being not so open at first, are able to show a pretty warm hospitality, will to help out, and of course, also some discontentment with disrespectful tourists/foreigners, mostly in rural areas. Enjoy.

We have Swedish background and have lived in Europe for over 8 years in early 2000's-2009. We enjoy watching your videos because it lets us get a taste of the future! Anything you would advise a Family to be aware of moving to portugal? We are hoping to reside in Algarve (as many do) but always want to learn more about the country we want to call home. Constantly looking forward to your videos.

You will not be disappointed with Algarve. The climate is exactly like California. Everybody speaks english and bad spanish like in the US. The euro is almost on par with the usd, but a coffee is very small and the wine is way cheaper. Moved here from Canada and Porto 30 years ago and if heaven was a place it would be called Algarve ( which means The west in arabic).

    • @artzreal

Portuguese here, from Coimbra. I would visit the the South and the North before choosing a place to live. The climate is better in Algarve, but the people, the architecture, the landscape or the prices don't work the same way. Algarve is good for vacations mora than to live, unless you like and you can afford a life of "dolce fare niente", with summers full of partying tourists and winters with empty villages.

Oh great, another guy listing exactly the same spots that everyone else mentions…
Stay away from the beaten path. Serra da Arrábida and Sesimbra have fantastic beaches that will make you forget Algarve. Talking about Algarve, avoid it from March to September. It’s wayyy too crowded and expensive. The coast from Setúbal/Tróia all the way down to Carrapateira is (in my opinion) a far better coastline to explore and get lost.
If the beach is not your thing, go inwards. Gerês is a fine example. Or even easier, follow the A6 road and stop along the way. Évora, Portalegre…
If you’re travelling mid-summer (peak season), maybe try travelling along the north coast. From Cascais (as you mentioned in another video) all the way to Aveiro. Stops Ericeira/Peniche/Nazaré/Figueira da Foz…
You’ll find much cheaper accommodations and food/drinks.
Dave, my dude, I’ve seen much better content from you. Some of your tips are actually quite insightful and show some knowledge, but not this one. These are just the same old tourist traps over and over again…
Really sorry for coming like this. I’m still a big fan!
In all fairness, I’m with you in Tomar! What a cracker! Specially if you’re happy driving around for a bit. There’s plenty of river beaches, hiking trails and camping spots surrounded by waterfalls.

    Thanks for the video Dave.
->Question: We're driving from Madrid to the Algarve and back to Madrid but not backtracking. I'd like to drive through a schist town. Is this possible? Could you recommend a town that's not too far out of our way to Madrid? We're thinking abt staying in Evora to avoid Lisbon traffic.

I'll be in Lisbon for four days before heading to Barcelona. With only four days in Lisbon, does it make sense to use one of those full days to travel to Porto or should I wait for my next trip?

In Portugal there apparently exists a longing that a man who mysteriously vanished a long time ago one day will return: Sebastian, King of Portugal.
