Maybe so, but it's not always easy to get the required permission and licensing for blasting. I visited a chalk mine in England in 2017 and there were two 984s slogging away with rippers and small rock buckets. Blasting would have saved time, but it had to be done the hard way, and the machines were battle-worn with extra plates welded onto the boom and stick. Video of one here: watch?v=PgT3ujeJHA8
