We've gone from using "golf packages" to booking accommodation and courses direct in the UK. We get better choice and save money. It is frustrating that many golf hotels do not offer one night, one round options.

Worst thing for me is buggy prices. Clubs need to remember there is a group of people that don't have a buggy by choice, they need one to play! I would like to see The PGA and England Golf suggest a maximum price of £15 per round for those with a blue badge for instance. One of my family members pays more in buggy fees than in membership fees....
Thanks for another great video Dan and I echo others who love the Sunday Morning Show 😊👍👍

Great stuff Dan. I was in our local US Golf store earlier today and was pretty surprised to see SIM 2 drivers still retailing at £300, which is crazy for a club that's now 3 seasons old ... and £579 for the latest Titleist, no thanks! As for green fees, I get costs are going up so green fees will inevitably go up too, but does seem like what was £40 pre-pandemic is now £80 .. all in all, golf is once again becoming a very expensive game to play.

Been away on holiday so just catching up. Another great video Dan with some interesting thoughts. In June I had the misfortune to break my driver, so I popped over to Scottsdale golf in Warrington and have to say they are fantastic and very knowledgeable. The bonus is they'll fit you and build it there and then. I really wanted the qi10 but couldn't hit it. Ended up in the cobra darkspeed with a 1/2 inch shorter shaft. Actually had an upgrade shaft (Accra gx green) put in as that worked best for me. Decided to get a new 3 wood while I was there. Shotscope is telling me that I made the right decision. I've hit my longest drive ever at 318 yards and PAvg is 243. That's more than 20 yards further on my previous driver. 3 wood stats showing greater improvement and fairways hit is up 12% as well.
On the cost side of things, green fees are becoming a joke and that can't be good for the future of the game

Loved this, I’m so guilty of tinkering with driver heads & shafts, lengths, weights, flex 😂
    Currently I’m on a Mizuno STZ-230 at 44” in a Kai’li white 60 Stiff flex.
And I have created a backup Frankenstein (mini driver) Aerojet LS driver head lifted up to 12* with a 3 wood Kai’li white 70 Stiff shaft (extra weight added to head).
Should probably sell up and get a proper fitting 😂

Really enjoyed this video Dan, looking forward to more of this content.
Think green fees and equipment costs are getting out of hand. Sadly many of the best links courses around the UK and Ireland now cost too much for locals to play, and are more catered to the international customer where money is no object.
Interestingly, this summer I heard in a famous Portrush bar, how Americans are paying $10k for a 7-10 trip for Irish and Northern Irish courses. So the £300-400 green fee plus a caddy isn’t expensive to them. I feel locals should be offered this experience at a lower price point. A £1000 green fee at Turnberry says it all really!

I used the old Callaway Fusion in 2017 which came in choice of 45 1/2 or 44 1/2...I got the 44 1/2 because i not only hit it straighter I actually hit it farther and timed it better. I bought my 1st Titleist driver TSI2 a few years ago . Love the sound & look...
played it at 45 1/2 and my dispersion left and right was not good, 45 inches was better but still not to my standard of the old Cally. Recently made it shorter again to 44 1/2 and changed the weight to get my preferred D2 and it feels like I have control again and my swing speed is the same...No more tentative thoughts on the tee with the driver ! It's incredible how much more control I get from just 1/2 inch off from 45 to 44 1/2. ... same experience with my fairway woods which have always been 1/2 inch short

Surely, some of the blame has to lay with golf youtubers and social media influencers who get sent so many clubs free to test that the customer has to incur the cost in the long road , as for green fees it just gone silly , surely it's better to have 50 people paying 25 quid and spending money in the shop and bar than have 4 people paying 100 quid

If you have an alignment aid on the ball, or draw a line on it yourself, it's advantageous to use it on the tee as well as for putting. Point the line where you want to start the ball and then just set the clubface perpendicular to it. And aligning to a spot on the ground adds even more calibration.

Surprised that the fitters at Woburn didn't suggest a shorter shaft in all the times you went there. When I got my TSR fitting, Andy had me try the shorter shaft once we had it narrowed down so we could see what it would do and ended up with a 45 inch driver instead of the 45.75

As always, look forward to and enjoy the SMS. Yes, golf equipment is getting absurdly expensive as are green fees. Here in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area golf is quite expensive. Not so much in the summertime but outrageous in late fall, winter, and early spring. We get a lot of “snowbirds” during this time, which skyrockets the green fees. Ex. A good course in the summer will costs about $65 USD, but that same course in late fall, winter, and early spring, will cost over $200 USD. You can save a little money by buying previous models when the new stuff comes out. The advancements are not that great, if any. Cheers.

Watching and typing, in advance of your thoughts re cost of golf, i would like to add some perspective. Started playing golf as a junior age 7, now age 67, so long time playing our game. I got my first set of new clubs in 1982, still have the receipt as i was so proud. Wilson tour blades, and matching woods, 1,3 and 5 wood £238 3 - SW irons, stiff dynamic gold S300 £212, total £450, my take home monthly wage was £75 so six months to earn my clubs. Average wage today is £35,000, so monthly before tax £2916 approx nett £2041, doesn’t that make clubs today cheap by comparison? We have many more brands, lots of good resale sites, direct to consumer providing fantastic quality and value, we also have fitting, not a chance back in the day, your pro might tinker with loft and lie, about all you could do to your reg or stiff clubs. We are definitely in a better place, that’s my 2d worth for those that remember LSD

Hi Dan. Swing stuff ... Yes Joe is dead on..Alignment parallel to target line... then apply that 5 Times Parallel concept stuff that we discussed this spring... and ball goes straight at your target. ;)
....and work on that Wall of Doom drill. ....set up a wall of doom somewhere in the backyard. That's all you need mate.
Gear talk.... Shafts.. we have almost identical numbers thru the bag. So I am not surprised that the driver shafts in the 70g ranges will not only feel better, but likely perform better for you as well. You could even try an Xflex in a 70g range shaft ...that may even feel and work better yet. As our numbers are so close... you should give a try with what I have in my drivers... Aldilla NV (original) 75 Xstiff. LOL you may have to hunt a bit to find one.. but it will be worth the effort. I bombed a 340 yard one yesterday, with that shaft in my TS3
I also have a Ventus Black 7x that feels good... but doesn't perform as good as the Aldilla NV The NV is more stable, and I get the sweetspot 90% of the time.. nothing I have tested performs quite as good as that Aldilla NV.
You could also give Dynamic Gold s300 in the irons another go.. but try soft stepping them. Cheers mate.

Always enjoy your show - thank you. Personally feel we have too much equipment on offer, most of it over priced and we are better sticking with what we have and spending the money on lessons (assuming you can find a good teaching pro). It is too easy to feel changing equipment will make us better golfers when in most cases we are better off nurturing old friends (aka your five wood!!!). Re price green fees - personally I will not pay more than £100 per round but expect fees to be in the range of £40 to £60. Played around St Andrews earlier this year and the price of better known courses were exorbitant and sadly being priced out visitors from the US and Asia who ended up playing through the noise for a 5 to 6 hour round!!! However, we found a number of gems off the beaten track and had a ball.

Probably something you already know but if you’re struggling with seeing your alignment when standing at address if you tilt your head so your dominant eye is lower than the other you may see it clearer.
Hope I explained that ok. 🤔. Easier to show in person.
I think the constant chasing of distance through speed has led to many switching to light shafts and not considering swing weight and the importance of that, so as you say probably not enough fitters focusing on that aspect, especially when it comes to matching it through the bag.
That is no doubt related to the last point of cost. If a good fitter can get better performance out of a years old driver with an even older shaft by shaving off an inch or so and adjusting swing weight they’re not likely to push the new product.
    Newer doesn’t always mean better.

But then along came the Internet/Magazine articles about how I should be using a LONGER shaft for more distance, since we're now in the era of "bomb 'n' gouge."" Seems like everything goes in cycles... "use a shorter shaft, use a longer shaft, use a stiffer shaft, use more flex..." Beginning to wonder if the magazine article authors just write anything, or they don't get paid.

Great content , message about sun cream is really important, and wish clubs would do more to promote it. As for costs, equipment costs are high, but the same for most sports and lots of good seconhand options around. My issue is membership and green fees and that a lot of clubs are pricing younger golfers out of the market and they should be the future , by young i mean 25 to 35 year olds, who often have lots of other costs amd golf becomes unaffordable, compared to other sports like football and cricket. Difficult to find green fees less than £40 -50 on weekdays and more at weekends. Also wish EG would make the handicap costs same for club members and those who arent members.

Hi Jimmy, I don’t think it’s the PGA, I think the training is really good, but it’s a bit like taking you driving test, you learn the basics and then learn to drive with experience. Club fitting and building is the same, you can go deep with it but not enough do because the Money is harder to come by. I think probably the companies don’t help because as soon as you change a shaft, it is out of warranty 🤯

Plenty of cheap golf to be had around here but if we have another winter like last year can see our membership numbers taking a hit and more pay and play. Mind I’ve just blew 500 quid on a lab putter but see that as more a long term thing as my current putter is 15 years old.

Hey Dan, living in Australia, you wear sunscreen a lot during summer. There have been tests done on how effective each type is, the results are the spray one's work ok but not as good as the normal rub in version.
Getting to the price debate, I have found the price of clubs are getting ridiculous, was looking a new irons cause I like new things, for the next generation of irons were an extra $200 each. Will get pretty expensive for new irons.

Liked this one Dan. For your chipping and pitching woes, go see Dan, Dan 😉. That's Dan Grieve at Woburn, of course. Regarding the price/cost of golf, don't get me started. That's a 'soap box' issue for me. The industry bleats and moans about how hard it is to attract new/young players to the game. Gee, I wonder why that might be. Could it be that few can afford £1500+ for equipment and £100+ a week to play? Surely it can’t be that 🙄. There are 2 basic strategies to increase profits - 'higher margins with fewer sales' and 'lower margins with more sales'. It seems the industry has determined the former is the preferred model. More fool them.

Hey Dan, coming from the skin cancer capital of the world we know about sunscreen. Just be aware that whilst some sunscreen is better than none Due to the application, spray sunscreens don’t offer as much coverage as lotion sunscreens.

I understand greenfees going up more than equipment getting more expensive. Maintenance is expensive, water will become a problem with climate change. Or we'll have long wet periods (like winter and spring 2024) interchanged with long dry ones, I really wouldn't be surprised if clubs will (have to?) start investing in things like cisterns. - I don't think greenfee prices will come down. For some courses, greenfees are high because they WANT to be exclusive. Different (commercial) dynamics there.

  • @stevecernuto740
    @stevecernuto740 2 месяца назад

I've never understood people being upset about the cost of golf equipment. The things I can't afford I just don't buy. I can't afford a Ferrari so I don't buy it. I'm very picky about the fit of my equipment but then I keep it for several years which keeps me from buying new stuff all the time. I do think drivers have gotten too long. The average player can't find the middle consistently with the longer clubs. If longer clubs were a good idea the tour pros would be playing them.

Not sure anyone knows… is it the cost of golf, cost of drinks, people financially stretched to be able to play or simply that some clubhouses have yet to master the art of making people feel wanted and welcome?
Certainly equipment costs are really expensive almost prohibitively so.

Is equipment too expensive? If you change clubs regularly, yes. If like me, a fitted driver does you 3 years, then no. Average out the cost. Same with irons.
As to golf course prices, they are expensive, in my opinion, but, supply and demand always works. People need to shop around, lots of “hidden gems” in Fife, around or under £50 a round.
    Good show, great discussion points.
