The best trick I’ve learned to basically get around the brains facial recognition is turning the whole thing upside down. Your brain can see shapes much better when it’s not seeing how a face should look like. It’s been super helpful to figure out what’s off when you just can’t tell.

I disagree, or at least it doesn't work for me.
And I disagree because of the same argument you used, you don't see the face how it should look like. Do you know the phenomenon that when you turn a face upside down except the eyes the face still looks correct to you? When you then turn around the entire picture, only then you realize that the eyes are the wrong way around, or at least it is more noticeable. So I think it is harder for your brain to recognize what's off when it's upside down as you are not used to see faces that way.
For me, when I turn a face upside down, I always think it looks better. Maybe when you then turn the face the correct way again, you are able to see the mistakes as your brain saw the same face from a different angle for some time. But I'm not sure about that.
What I think actually works (but rather is used in drawing than in sculpting as it's often done symmetrically) is flipping the image.

@@Reneah I think it also depends on how long you’ve been staring at your work and if you’re working symmetrically.
Getting a new perspective, whether it’s flipping it side to side or horizontally can help. I personally find different flaws in my drawing depending on how I flip it, bigger shapes when it’s upside down and more anatomy related things when flipping it side to side.
Ideally you’re not looking for a face, but try to look fore shapes. I think it also depends on how much your brain wants to fündig faces, mine is ok but not amazing at it, but I very much fall into the trap of drawing what I think it looks like rather than drawing what it actually looks like.

The whole “facial hair” thing is also very apparent for 2-D drawings, it rly brings personality to a character

something i’ve been battling with to actually starting my journey into 3d sculpting and animation is *actually doing it*, y’know? i design all of my characters that i draw all the time in a angular, shapely, and simple way.. just so it can be both easier and more stylized once i get to modeling them. but i always open blender and stare around at all these controls and i literally get stuck trying to move around in the workspace… i guess i will have to learn how to use the program first before i actually learn how to sculpt, but it’s so discouraging sometimes because it confuses me to the most insane degree.

Would you be able to do a video giving tips/guides on how to accurately recreate faces from reference? I mainly struggle with knowing in which way I need to change the less obvious regions. Getting the eyes, nose, lips, etc right isn’t too difficult but all in between, cheekbones, fat sections, all the very subtle form changes that aren’t outright defined in reference with drastic contrast. A video about this would be IMMENSELY helpful!
Also, WHAT MAKES LIPS POUTY!? I get told often the lips I make look good but the character looks like they’re pouting/‘duck face’ posing but I don’t even see it myself or know how to make them look different ‘cause they line up with the reference side/three-quarter/front profiles. 🙃

learn anatomy, after reading your comment its obvious you dont know pretty much anything about anatomy and just copy what you see. Hope it helps, a bit late but, hope it helps

Me wondering why in tutorials they first make sculpture of hair then replace it with hair particles!

I doubt you, the youtuber, will read this so I'll ask the viewers.
What sculpting application is being used here?
Can I use a model made on said application for VR Chat, normal animations, and/or something like VTubers?
    And,
Is it possible to get a commission?

Ooof this comment 9 months old and you were right...
The program being used here is Zbrush (paid, not really free *cough*) and for the other questions i don't know but as far as i know, Zbrush is not for animation making (i'd use Blender which is free for that), Zbrush is mainly for sculpting but you can also model (however not the best program for that i'd use Blender instead).
