  • Quick how-to guide in getting Star Citizen working with VR in Alpha 3.16 patch with Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC). This method does NOT provide stereoscopic 3D experience, which currently cannot be obtained due to VorpX being blocked by EAC. Reshade method is supposed to provide 3D, however based on my measurements, it does not do it either, so we are stuck with this until EAC whitelists VorpX.

The game has to support a direct feed to your VR to get a seemless experience which shouldnt include no middleware. Star Citizen doesn't support VR so its not as good. To be honest, if it was good as people say it was, I think more citizens would be using it. Best thing to get right now and what most PVPers are using is tobii eye tracker or trackVR which is what they do fully support. They are actually considered a advantage in PVP. When I set the ingame resolution to 2080x1960, the game disappears from the virtual desktop, if I tab out of the game i get the desktop back. 2. If I use a different resolution, the options menu is wider than my field of view, and since the view is head locked I cannot access options on either side.

      That is very odd that it disappears from virtual desktop when you set the resolution :/ Try 1920x1440 - it is a little too wide, but let's see if it doesn't disappear - also if you want to edit the options turn off the headlock so you can stretch etc first, then turn it on afterwards. Something I'd like to add is that, at least for me with a valve index, your going to have some bad latency between opentrack and the game. This can be minimized by tweaking the filtering in the opentrack app (basically just reduce everything to as low as possible). Even with this step there is enough latency to cause major nausea, however.

      @@planetwally Thanks for your fast reply :-). I just gave it a try using my Quest 1 (will perhaps try it later on other devices). First of all: great idea to get it working this way!
      Though there were some problems I got:
      1. The screen does not stick in the middle of my view when I click on that button on the upper left. It was difficult to use the left joystick to correct the position of the window. And if I look left and right the screen does not follow the movement now but it has some kind of offset - so if I look to the left the screen gets nearer and to the right it kind of pushes away. This leads to everything looking distortet. This might have to do with me having to center the screen while it is locked to the head. If you have any ideas this would be appreciated! How have you centered the view window?
      2. The resolution leads SC to kind of scramble the UI around so it is not centered itself if using the 4:3 one. I have the same problem on my 3:2 laptop. So I guess I stick to 16:9 if this cannot be solved.

    saw your video on DG360, great job! I have a Valve Index and I want to try this, though I'm curious is it stereoscopic 3d or just a flat image in 360 degrees?

    • @planetwally
      @planetwally  2 года назад +1

      thx! unfortunately the only solution for a true stereoscopic 3d output was via vorpx, which EAC now blocks... I also tried reshade with Depth3D plugin/module that does output 2 separate images and is supposed to create a stereoscopic 3d output, however when I compared the images side by side, there is pretty much no difference, so you are essentially getting the same image output twice with that solution too and it is not too stable either. So in the end I settled for this method, which is not the best option, but really is all we have right now ... another way is to use vorpx desktop instead of virtual desktop, but you get a flat output with that solution too until EAC whitelists vorpx... Now having said that, it isnt as flat looking as you may think - once the image size and resolution is configured well, it really does look quite convincing especially considering you have full 6 degrees of motion.

    Instructions unclear, had to use regular Virtual desktop and use its headlock feature inorder to continually see my screen, if i turn off the VR menu i lose sight of everything.
    wonder if you can pair this with gimbals. I know you have to hit the free look button to make gimbals free-aim with your free look which disables mouse control of the ship but... theoretically you could do a broadside fly by.

    • @planetwally
      @planetwally  2 года назад +4

      with current state of easy anti-cheat blocking vorpx, the only way to do vr is unfortunately without stereoscopic 3d - reshade with the depth3d plugin is supposed to provide some depth, but i tested and it really does not, despite projecting two screens... However this method does use virtual desktop's ability to extend the screen 100% of field of view, along with the square resolution and with the locked screen to your eyes will make it feel much more 'real' than i originally expected since it doesnt feel at all like youre just looking at a flat screen in front of you since that screen fully engulfs you and moves with your head in real time.

    Thanks for identifying the components needed to make this work. But there's a lot of details not included here about getting all of these components working together.
    3:15 - How do you connect to the virtual desktop instance? Is this inside SteamVR or on the desktop? Steam doesn't seem to have any awareness of the VDS app. Do I need to purchase the Virtual Desktop utility in steam? Do I need to input the Oculus Username or Viveport ID in the VDS app in the accounts menu on the VDS app?
    3:31 - Pressing start on the opentrack app doesn't change the view inside the VR headset at all. I have the input, output and filter set as shown in the video, but it doesn't do anything. The Octopus model track with the head set, but SteamVR didn't lunge anywhere.
    If you can provide some additional details, that would be very helpful, thank you.

    • @planetwally
      @planetwally  Год назад

      3:15 - You need to download the VD software on both the PC and inside the headset - the PC download is the VD Streamer: www.vrdesktop.net/ (which will be the one applicable to your headset version) - if you are using the Quest 2 like I am in the video, then you can download the wireless version of the software in the Quest store linked from above. You then install the launcher on your headset and when you specify the correct username in the streamer, then you will be able to connect just by launching first the PC streamer and then the software in your headset. The VD site has full instructions on how to connect and it will be same as what they prescribe.
      3:31 - Launching opentrack should not change the view inside the headset, but it should launch steam vr in your headset... not sure why it is not launching for you in the headset but I;m happy to help you troubleshoot on my discord -- discord.planetwally.com

Only way to get my video back is to unplug my VR headset, Shut down DCS, video is then projected on the VR lenses as it should be. I tried 2160x2160 first but that setting only allowed me to scale my fov up to about 80 which is unplayable. Thanks for the guide. I tried this. I am amazed that you found a way, it must have not been easy. I play a lot of VR stuff and also missed VR from ED but I have to say that this method is unusable for me. Again, I think it is cool that you found a way but the distortion + the lag slower response from headmovment is unbearable for me. If you turn your head at a normal look left type speed it can take the camera half a second to catch up. I do not feel comfortable playing like this even though I really miss mining in VR from ED. I will just have to wait till someone finds a distortion / lag free way or till it is nativly supported. Thanx for trying though.

    • @planetwally
      @planetwally  2 года назад +2

      Opentrack does provide full 6 degrees of motion tracking - meaning you can spin your head side to side, left and right, tilt left and right, up and down, forward and backward - so yes if you stand up while flying a ship your vision will go up as if your head is tall - SC does limit this to a degree so it is not unrealistic - such as walking around you cant come out of your body lol. Also if you move your chair lets say a foot to the left, you will feel like you're misaligned in your ship, you have to then reset the position to home on your headset/virtual desktop or relaunch opentrack to reset position.

      thats correct unfortunately there is no good solution for full stereoscopic 3d right now on SC. The only solution for a true stereoscopic 3d output was via vorpx, which EAC now blocks... I also tried reshade with Depth3D plugin/module that does output 2 separate images and is supposed to create a stereoscopic 3d output, however when I compared the images side by side, there is pretty much no difference, so you are essentially getting the same image output twice with that solution too and it is not too stable either. So in the end I settled for this

      not sure how AMD handles adding resolutions that are not supported by the monitor - nvidia has an option to add it and just pops up a dialog box saying that it is not supported by the monitor .... you can still test this out and play with it by using a resolution like 1920x1080, you will have slight bars on top and bottom which is a bit annoying but better than nothing - make sure to enable headlock with no delay that is the most important setting. • @planetwally
      @planetwally  2 года назад +2

      I actually don't recommend doing that until folks first get things working with the res just added to your NVIDIA or AMD settings - adding them to the USER file makes the game start in a specific resolution - which does not need to be done, you can just change it in options. There is an indirect 'trick' to get wider view by having the game start in the 2400x1000 resolution, then switching to the 2080x1960 resolution in settings and SC will preserve a wider field of view, but honestly that is a bit too confusing and the benefit is not really worth the trouble, hence why I omitted it to keep the video shorter and less confusing.
