    In about 1958 dad bought a lister/ planter a 4 row. We planter Milo and soybean. The bottoms through dirt both ways. First time cultivating we pulled away the plant. Second time we put the dirt to the plant. At that dad pulled a 3 - 14 mole board plow. The tractor was a G John Deere.

    Wonderful team. Nice and slow walking which makes life easier with your potato plow. You guys made it look so easy to get the right depth to turn and not slice the potatoes . Lovely looking ground too. My team isn’t that well broke so I use a Pioneer Homesteader with the potato plow attachment. It’s a riding implement so I can use both hands to drive and it is steered with the feet. It can be a bit tricky to get the depth and angle set perfectly. I like the leveling board attached to the disk. That works great with the small disk. I might try the disking immediately after harvesting this year. Good idea. Great video.

    I saw you on a Rural Heritage video yesterday.
    I have a question for you about maple trees; Are there different types that look basically the same, but the wood is different? I cut a limb off my maple tree a few years back, I was amazed at how heavy a piece about 4-5" diameter and roughly 5' was. A couple weeks ago, we had storms and high winds that brought down some limbs from a maple tree next door to my mom. When I was cutting it up and putting it out by the street for the town to pick up, I picked up a piece that was considerably bigger and it seemed quite a bit lighter. I was surprised.
    I don't know much about trees, so I thought I would ask you about it.
    Another interesting video, thank you. Have a great day.

    • @zachodom7486
      @zachodom7486  3 месяца назад +1

      Hey Mr Jones. So yessir, there are hard maples and soft maples. Some will hold more water than others and will heavier/lighter depending on if it’s dried and whatnot. The maple lumber is sorta hard to tell apart, and I admit..I’m not the best at it. But yessir, there are several trees in the maple family. Just like there are several trees in the hickory tree family. Bunch in the oaks as well. Thank you for the kind words my friend and thx for watching and commenting! This was such a nice video Zach. Beautiful team of mules. I was watching when you were first trying to plow. You tried to get them to shift to the left a little. And just as you said. After two or three steps pearl shifted back to the right. She went right back down in the furrow where she was used to going. Had to laugh a little at the mules wanting to eat corn instead of plowing. I do have a question. If you didn't tie the mules off at the tree. Would they still have stood there at the tree waiting for your next command? Or would they eventually walk off back to the barn? Those were some beautiful looking potatoes. It sure sounded peaceful there. Again, thank you for sharing such a pleasant video. Take care wishing you and the Summers the very best.

    • @zachodom7486
      @zachodom7486  3 месяца назад +2

      In answer to your question about tying them..yes they would’ve stood there just fine. I’ve had to leave mine and walk away from them quite a bit in the woods and they’ll stand for you really good once they’ve worked enough. Mr summers mules are no different. And yes you’re right on Pearl wanting back in the furrow. She’s just doing what she knows! Which is great. I don’t fuss much when it’s like that. Anyway, thank you so much for the kind words and also taking time to watch and comment. I surely appreciate it and I hope I answered your questions. Take care and do come again, please

  • @klauskarbaumer6302
    @klauskarbaumer6302 3 месяца назад +2

    I love how these mules follow their owner, showing the close relationship they have with each other. And that allows Mr. Summers to sling the knotted lines around his middle, something that otherwise would not be advisable in case the team would take off. The safe way is to put the lines over the shoulder with one arm out so that one could duck out quickly if necessary.
