Maybe it's because I'm an elder millennial, but my experience of my mid-20s was not failing to make decisions because I had too many options. My experience was around the time of the '08 financial crisis. Me and my peers were treading water because of a lack of financial options in the earliest part of our professional life.

This. Also an elder millennial here. When I got my Bachelor's, we were in the middle of a recession. There weren't many options for employment. I went to grad school because I couldn't find a decent job. I currently work in the public sector, in a position that I never dreamed I would do and I do it because it pays my bills. This is what a lot of millenials face. It's cool of you can get a job close to what you want/went to school for, but but many of us had to settle.

It doesn't help that everyone (even Gen Z) doesn't take us seriously. We are not trying to change the world, most of us are just trying to live in it. People called me entitled for wanting an entry level desk job with a bachelor's degree and five years in the military as an admin. I had a hard time finding a job as a receptionist.

Same! My peers and I all tried, and we all hit financial walls. Joined a startup that was my literal dream job, but we could never do more than break even, so I never even really got paid in the end. Now I'm just doing whatever will pay rent, and I'm exhausted. I miss those days, but I couldn't eat on them.

As a Gen Xer, I can recall being defined as a "Lost Generation" as well. I think older generations always label younger generations with the same traits. And for those of us who lived in big cities, we rented/had roommates for a long time as well. I guess the more I see these generational analyses, the more I see that we have more in common than we think. The main difference between us and younger generations is the age we were when technology entered and took over our lives.

I got let go from my job ,bare in mind this was the third job I had worked that year, I moved properties twice and I just hit a wall. I had no clue about anything and started questioning all my life choices. I have only in recent months kind of found a sense of direction. not full purpose. Everything isn't fixed. it isn't an instant fix but I am just making better choices and am learning to not think too far ahead into the future and just staying present. I am feeling better as a person within myself and that's what is important.

The idea that millennials want to do something big didn’t come out of thin air. For me, it was the words of others from older generations telling me that I was created to do something big and meaningful. They said I would, “Speak to the Nations!” They also said it would happen in some miraculous way such as being under qualified but “chosen.” After a number of years of isolation, a global panini, intensive therapy, and honest introspection, I now put in the work to do something that feels good for me, but a far cry from the glamorous life I was promised. I defined my personal values and make my decisions based on them. Instead of speaking to nations, I commit to listening to and supporting one person at a time. Instead of being chosen, I choose what I want and commit to the work it takes to have it. Overall, I decided to go back to the simple truths of life and do my best, ready to work through any challenges that may come my way. And I couldn’t be happier and more grateful for the woman I am today.🥰

You’re so right! I know I often felt that I was not living up to my potential just because whenever I showed any talent in something I would receive a comment such as “you should have been a chef/writer/artist/singer etc”. So then I would feel bad for not being any of those things, even though I enjoy doing all of those things without committing to them professionally. But now I realise that even if I was a famous chef/writer/singer etc. I could never have been all of them and so some of my “talents” would have necessarily been “wasted”. So I chose not to take these comments as reproaches rather than compliments and be happy that I get to do all these things that I love even though I will never become famous or wealthy doing them. So yeah, it’s a tough spot to be in, living up to your parents’/grandparents’ loving but also sometimes crushing expectations.

As someone born in 1992 (thus a Millennial) I neither understood nor liked ALL us millennials being stereotyped as "lazy" and wanting "people to give me things simply because" (nor do I need a safe space). For most of my life, I worked my ass off to provide for myself and to make something out of myself. That being said, I think most millennials simply want a more equitable form of living (called it Socialism or what you will) that's not so attached to the inequalities of the past. About Millennial living, I can't speak for all of them, but some live in houses (either they bought then or they were handed down from their parents) Long story short, we as millennials have different stories and voices.

I feel like a lot of this millennial uncertainty has to do with growing up in the middle of the rise of the internet. Growing up in the middle of a technological boom means not knowing how it will change the world and thus not knowing where your place is going to be when everything is said and done. Look at all the industries that were changed because of that and how it affected everything from job markets to the way we meet people. Obviously it's had a lot of upsides but just as many downsides. It's gonna cause problems.

As a Millennial, I'm almost 34. I know what I want to do with my life, be a writer and filmmaker, and am trying to get there by moving things forward and playing things smart by working at a side job, but it just feels like I'm not getting anywhere. The side job (which is in a different career field) takes most of my time, it pays peanuts, and It doesn't feel like I'm getting anything emotionally or creatively out of it. It is also the only paying job I could get after four years of constantly changing my resume and cover letter, meeting with consultants and paying for analysis of said documents (Bluntly put, I absolutely suck at job hunting). Add on all the craziness going on in the world (and a brain injury), and it just feels like I'll never get there. Even if I do eventually make it as a writer/filmmaker though, I don't want to do it just to "do something big" or be rich and famous. I just want to do something that makes me feel good, both creatively and as a person (that I'm good at something at least) and that I can make a decent living off of. Also a stable social life like catching up with friends every other weekend for some food and maybe a movie or something, which I didn't get to do much when I was younger. Maybe even a group of friends who are fellow creatives and we can bounce ideas back and forth and or collaborate on projects together. That's all.

Most elder millennial problems were/are a direct result of graduating into the 2008 financial crisis, but were written up in the media as generational character flaws. It was all "millennials not moving out of home because they're coddled and soft by helicopter parents!" "Millennials won't get jobs because they're entitled snowflakes!" and "millennials don't own houses because they eat too much avocado toast!" The truth is we couldn't get jobs because there weren't any, and we lived at home longer and couldn't save for houses because of the aforementioned lack of jobs. I don't relate at all to feeling like I had "too many choices". I relate to being rejected for countless job applications because I didn't have 5 years experience for entry level receptionist and admin positions.

Whether it was high school, undergrad, grad school, or Meetup, virtually every friend I've made has been in-person. I was still in High School during the 2008 financial crisis and a child during 9/11, but I was recently out of Law School and looking for a job during the pandemic, as such, the pandemic was much more impactful to me than the 2008 financial crisis. Further, there's a hell of a difference between how a 19 year old would be impacted by 9/11 and the following Wars versus a 9 year old but both people are technically part of the same generation. Idk, it just seems like generational cutoffs are kind of arbitrary and because of that are a poor measure of general collective attitudes.

As a 31 year old millennial, I feel that the on screen tropes of millennials are not entirely accurate. However, I will say that coming from a place where I was told that if you think of yourself as average people will treat you like you’re average. I’m at a point in my life where I think some people are just average and that’s OK and not extraordinary. I finally come to a place where I don’t wanna have to try to win people over by being extraordinary. But I did manage to find a job that I think is more fulfilling than any job that I’ve ever had, which is being an after school site coordinator working with kids six years ago I thought I was going to be a curator at a museum but now I have changed passions, and you know my interest have changed. Also, I feel like every generation has a certain degree to entitlement from working in customer service for a few years I’ve seen boomers and Gen Xers act entitled. I know it’s not just the millennials that are entitled there’s a lot of entitlement in other generations. Lastly, I’m at a place where I’m comfortable with just being me.

Honestly, the stereotype of "entitled and narcissistic" millennial being such a huge trend in the 2010s has always confused me, because millennials are also stereotyped as being raised by helicopter parents, but statistically speaking, I'm pretty sure that being raised with strict and overly protective parents does the complete opposite effect, and in fact, it's the children who grew up with less rules and adult supervision who end up with narcissistic tendencies.
So according to how the media likes to talk about how each generation was raised, *generation x* should be known as being the most narcissistic generation, not millennials, since the media likes to boast about how gen x were allegedly around their parents less and had more freedom (again, I'm just going by their own logic). Also, helicopter parents, not their children, but the parents, have a higher chance of having narcissistic tendencies (makes sense, since narcissists like to control people around them), and baby boomers are the parents of most millennials, so I guess baby boomers would also be more narcissistic, by their logic. Right?
Children who grew up with helicopter parents often end up with low self confidence and low self esteem, which sounds like the complete opposite of entitlement or narcissism. Since we're going by stereotypes, I don't see millennials justifying physical child abuse or screaming at customer service workers as often as I do with their gen x counterparts (not that I'm saying that all gen xers do this though, but, you know...since apparently we're gonna over-generalize generations here, why not? And this generation (as they like to say) sat back eating their popcorn happily watching millennials get slammed left and right for years, so surely they'd be okay with a little taste of their own medicine.). Just saying...
As someone in gen z, when I was a teenager, it was always laughable but also sad seeing millennials painted with the same brush in such a cartoonishly villainous way. Back then, I thought it was just the typical douchebag behavior that bitter old people try to pull and nothing more, but looking back, while I still think it's douchebag behavior, I now see it was obviously propaganda. Now my generation is starting to face it. Just the media trying to shift the blame on the next group of young people to blame the world's problems on, or gaslight the group or put words in their mouth by saying, "You want to be able to afford a home and be able to eat? You're entitled!" Or, "It's actually not our fault that this is happening. It's your fault! You're just lazy. You don't want to work!"
Edit: Anyone who thinks that millennials haven't been held accountable as much as gen x is being dishonest with themselves. Gen x has been the luckiest generation ever. The media throws a pity party for them because some of them were "latch key kids" (boo hoo, they went through something that every generation deals with) and they call it a day. Meanwhile, millennials had to deal with a lot of shit from the media and got blamed for everything other generations did, even stuff my own generation did.

Since millennials are born under the most laissez faire capitalism world, like our childhood had Diana, spice girls, reality tv, no doubt, titanic, all the fast food made bigger and bigger, all the theme parks made bigger and bigger, like it all looks simple and one dimensional our childhoods, which is true, but before the burst of smart phones and social media, we are already a very socially aware and judgemental world. And when crisis came back then, it becomes magnified. From controversies to scandals, it was topics to be endlessly discussed and expanded and when social media and fake news and cancel culture became a thing, the whole world became a internet mob culture kind of thing. As No Doubt’s earlier works expressed, we are trapped in a box. But it’s worse, because the box made all of us depressed and too aware of judgements and hype. And this make us millennials overthink wanting to make something big in life when in reality, our current world situation really needs content. It’s the focus on the most average simple thing and just make the best out of it and finding passion in connecting and helping your own community so that after the war and COVID is resolved, we all can survive in a sustainable life for your own self. Forget about making it big. Make it meaningful:)

I think it's because Milleinals are very self centered. They take credit for tech, which Boomers and Gen X created. Yet they're wagging their fingers at Gen Z saying they created it and you should appreciate them.
They take credit and co-opt Gen X 80s/90s culture and say Gen Z is copying "their" aesthetic, when it is really Gen X. They are even taking credit for Grunge and old school hip hop. When it was mostly Gen X artists and we were the target market at the time.
They take credit for starting work/life balance when it was Gen X who started that in the 90s with their tech companies, and Gen Z ran with it.
They're always yelling we're "breaking cycles/barriers/tolerant" when they are just as racist and exclusive than previous generations, sometimes more. There are entire TikTok accounts and Lipstick Alley trashing younger generation. And they are super ageist, even though some of them are mid age along with Gen X. They are very judgmental and point fingers at others, while refusing to acknowledge their shortcomings.
Another talking point of theirs is that they're raising the best children. Teachers are leaving the field in record numbers due to poor behavior.
The media hypes them up to the point of narcissism simply because of their high numbers, and hands others accomplishments over to them. They are legends in their own minds. They believe the media hype. However, just as we hold Boomers and Gen X accountable, so should we they.

One other thing that affected both millennials and Gen Z was the subprime mortgage crisis. Their parents, whether the kids were 4 or 15 were losing the homes, their savings, their stability. I’m a hairstylist and I see trends made through financial crisis. It’s why millennials women have such long hair but I’m starting to see a change. The Gen Z girls are cutting their hair shorter. The millennials have raised the generation that will change the world. The future suffragets. Our Joan’s of Arc. I’m Gen X and have never been prouder of a group of youth.

In my experience, for what it’s worth, meaning can be obtained in the career and work areas of life if you find a goal that seems ridiculously impossible and then you start wondering “why is it impossible? What do I need to do?” Once you reverse engineer the path, make peace with the fact that you won’t reach it for many years, and take it one goal at a time, life starts having meaning on a daily basis.
I just had a big streak of wins recently, after working on a project for three years, not knowing whether it will actually be successful or not. That one project is still a stepping stone in my path, but it’s a big one that people said couldn’t be done, it got me a lot of attention and unlocked new possibilities. So these three years weren’t wasted, and neither were the five years prior to it, which was my training phase.

I havent seen the show, but someone passing out of flyers to meet people is a cute idea and it made me smile. I wouldn't be so quick to put it down, because even if it's not an 'accurate' portrayal of something Millennials do, it's an interesting thing for a *character* to do. From a script perspective, it accomplishes several things, including telling us something about their personality, as well as keeping them active. Instead of protagonists staring at screens or being online, they teach writers it's better for a visual medium to have characters... getting out and doing things.

There’s nothing special about Millennials or any other generation, for that matter. If anything, it’s the so-called Greatest Generation that went through and fought in the Great Depression and World War II that is deserving of unique recognition more any other. Of course, they too had their own awful sins such as Jim Crow, institutionalized homophobia, dedication to misogyny and others. With that said, you gotta have a thick skin to come out of these two massive events alive then thrive to become the grandparents or great grandparents of all of us. Can Millennials have it very hard? Sure, no doubt. We all do. Just don’t cry me a river. You’re not special.

We're ranging between 43 and 23... all of us are indeed full fledge adult that have pretty much finished studying and are now professionally active. We're also the age demographic that is right in the sweet spot of "have experience and got one or two decade to put it to good use". A good chunk of us also make a significant portion of the parent demographic, since most people in the western world have kid in their 30's.

I noticed you used references of foreign (non-American) characters and I don’t think it’s fair for anyone to lump us all in. A millennial in Europe is not going to have the same experiences as us American millennials. The housing crisis of 08’ and the pro-capitalist hustle culture is uniquely American. I’d argue we have felt way more pressure to “grow up” and get to work and buy houses compared to a millennial who grew up in Paris or London. 😂 like come on.

    • @alexanderfo3886
      @alexanderfo3886 Год назад +4

Yes and no. Some specific things might be uniquely American, but not the general feeling.
It may be true that the increasing rate of people giving up on the idea of house owning is a specifically American consequence of the housing crisis, but this crisis grew into a financial one with palpable international repercussions so that in all of the Western World, our generation is often poorer than our parents.
And while hustle culture may be stronger in America, the trope of pursuing a "dream job" with unpaid internships and ending up in the gig economy has been true for many outside the US. We may not have to deal with student debt we accumulated in the process, but still with that reality of being stuck.
As to Paris or London, they have simply become completely unaffordable for our generation to live in. I know several people my age who literally fled from Paris after having lived there because it was financially unbearable for them to keep their already minuscule appartments.
