It's been my personal experience that when advocating for myself, speaking up has the consequence of having the medical staff label you ( medical chart) as a difficult patient
This is so true. In my area they use the first 3 characters of the postcode of our area (as a code on our records) which is an area known for its 'alternative types' and so anybody speaking up for themselves is lumped with a social group who are looked down on.

Yea, well they literrally stoped my heart at the beginning of my 3rd ! nose surgery, and i was dead for over 2 min.. stayed in hospital for a month, had a pic line. They inserted an ICD, and sent me home. Ive been so ill, so messed up, scaredto death to be near any doctors or hospitals..no one and not the hospital has ever admittedfault and they continue to say, we dont know whathappened. Still have a busted nose. No accountability at all ! I want this box out but im scared to death and my anxiety is off the charts. They lie lie lie...
Who cares speak up no matter what
My last colonoscopy/endoscopy procedure was my last! I was body slammed by a nurse when I didn’t turn onto my side as fast as she wanted me to, and while I was trying to tell her that I had a slipped disk in my back. I was in a room with tons of people and machines I’ve never seen before in two previous colonoscopy procedures, but my doctor was not present. I was told she was running late and I went under without seeing her and she was not available after my procedure. I had bleeding for years afterward and I never had a follow up conversation with her. Her office staff was scary, and she knew they were but previously had said she didn’t know what to do about them. 5 years later I received an email from her stating, “This has been a long time coming and…” I immediately deleted her email and sent it to junk mail! I will not have another one. The patient doesn’t have anyone in the room who is on their side once they are under anesthesia and loved ones are on the other side of the closed doors. My advice is to learn everything you can about keeping yourself healthy and stay out of the doctor’s office. And I worked in doctor offices for years, and that gives me less confidence in them. Sad.

I do, as well! I was a nurse in previous years, so I speak sometimes using medical terms. Some Doctors become insecure, when patient say, “ no. I do not want any more of this treatment or that injection.

I always thought it was commonly understood: NEVER share hair brushes and combs.
NEVER share drinking cups, mugs, forks, knives, spoons without thoroughly washing and rinsing these items.

I purchased a very small voice recorder and put it in my sock, so I got the whole thing. Mine was during cancer surgery. They DID say a few inappropriate things, though.
Informed consent goes completely out the window. Why I can't I pre-approve and see everything they plan to do ahead-of-time and then only agree to going under after the OR team explains their plan?

@@missank9542 it is important for her to have an advance directive ( notarized and documented by staff) since you and her knows her medical condition. Make sure you are the person to carry out the directive in event she is not able to speak for herself (also know what she wants and don't want in the directive)

Saying X number of patients were potentially exposed to X pathogens isn't the same thing as saying they all actually got it. It's probably just how many patients they have to contact and let them know one of their past doctors has been known not to always follow proper procedures so they need to get tested.

I was paralyzed by Cauda Equina Syndrome 10 years ago and spent many years, off and on, in hospitals and rehab facilities/nursing homes. I’ve had ppl scrub the hub and not scrub the hub, and you can tell a lot about the facility and their standards by “little” things like this. I always watch my caregivers carefully, and I will advocate for myself and correct them

Yup I had nurses consistently forget to scrub the hub and when you say something they call you a difficult patient disrespecting staff! 😡I have port directly to my heart
My mom had the port, and the nurse didn’t scrub nor wear gloves. When asked, they say nothing will happen. Unfortunately she passed away from what they call secondary complications. I doubt but I will never truly know.

As an RN, I cannot tell you how many times I saw ER nurses not "scrub the hub" on VADs...And doctors do NOT care about best practice..I saw so many doctors go from room to room without wiping down their stethoscopes or washing/sanitizing their hands..Saw doctors cough in their hands and just keep on typing on the computer..One time, a doctor had his head over a faucet, filling up his hands with water and drinking from them...Unbelievable...Filthy practitioners...
I have advocated for myself and others previously and the staff have always gotten irritated, challenged me, got an attitude, and said, I know what I am doing and dismissed me. What they dont know is that I am in the medical field and I knew what I was talking about. But I was very disappointed to see medical staff not following protocol and also reacting so badly. I also always report to the manager, who pretend to care and then not much changes.

I have also experienced that. After I asked questions they treated me terribly. To make it worse I had to stay in the hospital for a month. Then went home and got an infection and had to go back for another week. 🙄 they still treated me very rude.
I have walked out of and been asked to leave, a few doctors' offices/ clinics and a dental surgeons' office because I felt unsafe while observing things not being right and/ or asking the wrong questions.

Bronchoscopy?
I had a PICC line so I know the importance of scrubbing the hub
In around 2001 I had a colonoscopy at UW Seattle. I noticed the scope had crust stuff on it and the doctor brushed it off and said it wss sterile because it was autoclaved. Then I got a letter, not a call, that I'd been possibly exposed to CJD because of this. I didn't get that, fortunately. But had to get another colonoscopy there maybe a year or two later where I asked to be awake during the procedure, and the doctor bullied the CRNA threatened to have her fired if she did not anesthetize me against my wishes. She did it and I woke up in an empty classroom where a resident was self gratifying in the corner. I jumped off the table, knocked everything over and demanded the doctor, who when I questioned him, all he had to say was this is a teaching University and now else do I expect people to learn. Medicine needs an big overhaul. Doctors have too much power. I'm no fan of UW even though I graduated there. That experience was life altering for me. Administrators never responded when I told them what happened.

Retired nurse here, always “scrub the hub!” So important!!
Agreed, but infection control wise, scrubbing the hub is much more important to prevent staph/strep/E.coli and other easily transmitted bacteria, than HIV/Hep which basically requires reusing or inadequately sterilizing something. When I was a certified PICC RN we were taught that PICC line injections sites should always be prepped with both Betadine and alcohol. That was over 20 years ago, maybe standards have changed.

I am a retired nurse, StH was standard protocol. ALL pathways into the body have be made sterile at ALL entry points. We used to draw on the port post StH, re StH then and only then give meds.
The lacking in infection control in hospital *post* *covid* astounds me! I recently had spinal surgery, not ONE nurse went to StH and once I told them too I was known to staff as 'difficult'.
Its up to you to protect yourself. In the UK atm the last place you want to be is sick and in hospital!

This is why I am wary of being in any hospital alone. I wish surgeries were recorded or a loved one was allowed to watch.
Any machine or medical instrument that isn't new or autoclaved, such as respirators, dialysis machines, or anything used in obstetrics, plastic, or oral surgery, is suspect.
Surgeries and medical procedures performed outside hospitals also come to mind.
Plasma donation machines are in demand to donate blood and plasma to reduce “forever” chemicals.
Any donated biological item should be screened- breast milk, skin, organs, sperm, blood, plasma, etc.- and could be suspected.
One doctor could also do something wrong and unknowingly expose others who then use infected instruments or tissues.
Thinking back in history to vilified midwives who had the nerve to wash their hands also comes to mind. So reckless!
It would be great if everyone were required to take a course on sterile practices and cleanliness around food use and storage.
A salesperson in a cosmetics store tried to convince me to use a sterile Q-tip from an open jar. I politely said they weren't sterile, and she told me I was wrong and the store had just trained her! 🤨

NONE of these potential scenarios should EVER happen! If they do, it comes down to either laziness or greed. I am a recently retired oncology nurse clinician, having worked in a private oncology clinic- no pharmacist- we mixed all our own drugs/chemotherapy. Also submitted our own billing so I know about ‘double dipping’. For your viewers who dont know this, those single use drug vials are charged per vial & no matter the cost, the remainder of the vial needs to be discarded; otherwise you’re charging 2 or more patients for the same unit of drug. Even if the same patient gets 2 separate doses of the same drug they need to be from 2 separate vials; can’t charge for 2 if you only used one. It used to make me sick to throw away valuable chemotherapy, but YOU KNOW if you double dip it’s insurance/medicare fraud & I wasn’t about to put myself in that situation. So there’s really no excuse in this day & age for any patient being contaminated by medical equipment or drugs.

As a vascular access nurse… Thank You for teaching people to watch and speak up regarding scrub the hub. One ☝️ caveat… at my hospital … we put an alcohol cap on the hub of all access. When you take the alcohol cap off, you get 1 free pass as the alcohol cap cleans the hub after dwelling for 1 minute.

Ohhh Vasc Nurse...would I love to have a side conversation w/u! 3 year, 3 states, 7 scans of lower limbs, ALL scans have noted problems, EVERY VASC DR said nothing wrong w/me. This is the briefest way I can start my convo! I too am nurse, avid researcher, humongous pro- patient advocate..etc etc etc...I am semi retired (62) but am smart, knowledgeable and inquisitive. I am always compelled to share advice, knowledge & sources of information. People will know what the are names of their drinks, cars, foods...but ask them what the names of their medications are....clueless! This was always a responsibility as a private practice nurse I took very seriously. Making sure folks have a CURRENT med list card in their wallet. IDK what has happened within the 1st source of medical care, primary care practices, where the Dr, Nurse , staff have no inclination to properly care for their patients...which is actually their bread and butter...I tell patients- THE DR WORKS FOR YOU! Not you for them..overpopulation of the united states & world has caused lax attitudes in that fact alone...meaning there's no concern of not having enough patients to he a successful practice. And by successful I mean - MONEY. I could go on for hours...I have also become a patient 3 years ago and STILL not having my medical issues resolved...even tho there are fixes.....blah blah blah..let's talk about this more....
I haven’t heard the words “scrub the hub” but as someone that gets infusions and needs to be disconnected from my IV often to take bathroom breaks, I do notice the nurses always scrubbing the hub before they re-connect me. Kudos to them.

Unfortunately, speaking gets you awful care. I used to have an ophthalmologist who would waltz in the room from seeing another patient and NEVER wash is hands..never wore gloves. I once asked that he wash his hands, he got up and left me there for over an hour . I finally got up and rescheduled with another doctor
I am a retired home infusion nurse who worked for a medical system that values training and using best practices, so we used best current practices in order to place and manage IVs, including central lines (PICCs, ports, etc). Not only do you scrub the hub before accessing an IV line, you scrub it for 15 seconds. It’s time and friction that has proven to remove pathogens from the access port. It may be scary to stop a medical professional if they aren’t performing proper technique, but you are the one who will suffer the medical consequences if contamination is introduced into your vein. Who cares what they think about you. Just make a point to mention in passing that you have a close friend or relative who is an attorney. Truly, most medical professionals hold themselves to high standards. Sadly, not all do, and they need to be called out one way or another.
MY SISTER WAS INFECTED WITH HEP C HERE IN THE USA FROM A BLOOD TRANSFUSION ABOUT 40-45 YEARS AGO . SHE'S STILL ALIVE BUT IS CONSTANTLY HAVE BLOODWORK AND LIVER ULTRASOUNDS . SHE WAS CURED OF THE HEP C A FEW YEARS AGO BUT THE DAMAGE IS ALREADY DONE.
This was before blood was tested before transfusion
I received a blood transfusion in 1984 or 1985 during surgery. I ended up being infected with a condition for a lifetime. 🙁

R.N. who worked MED/SURG, I can not even fathom someone not using alcohol wipes (or whatever they use now) prior to administering IV meds! I'm old enough to remember when we SASH'd central venous lines each time! Old enough to also remember when hep-locs actually were flushed with heparin! Good Lord, you are injecting meds into someone's veins! Directly!

The anesthesiologist doesn’t set the prices….?!? Blame the hospital admins who demand high patient volume turnover, the insane price gouging of the insurance companies.
I already commented on this, but an anesthesiologist who isn’t following proper billing procedure and/or is using single use vials on more than one patient is committing insurance/medicare fraud. Medicare actually sets the prices of drugs used in hospitals & insurance companies have to use those prices. So there’s no way a doctor can overcharge for drugs UNLESS they charge multiple times for the same vial/unit of drug. (Single use vials are such either because they contain no preservatives & spoil OR they are of a dose which is billed in that unit. Eg: drug vial contains 4mg & is billed in units of 4mg. Patient dose is 2mg. The patient is still charged for that whole 4mg vial/unit so the remainder must be discarded. If you give the remaining 2mg to another patient who is also charged for a 4mg unit it is fraud.)

I worked environmental services and witnessed MANY, MANY medical industry employees lift garbage and laundry lids with their bare hands rather than use the foot pedal. There were doctors who never washed their hands which was obvious when their exam room sinks had no fresh water drops. Some areas rarely, if ever, needed their soap or anti-bacterial dispenser refilled. Then there were the needles left out on counters or put in the sharps disposal with the needle left sticking straight up for anyone to poke themselves.
I got a job in the medical industry after a near fatal misdiagnosis in an attempt to "educate" the "educated". As if any of them listened to a lowly "housekeeper" who had to save her own life after being ignored by "college educated" "healthcare" "professionals".
As a doctor I tested myself every 3 month for all transmissible infections in order to protect my patients

I recently had a PICC line and was in a nursing home. Some nurses scrubbed, some did nothing.
That’s incredibly dangerous not to glove up, wear PPE, and scrub the site. My mom had one when she had ovarian cancer. I was taught how to take care of it bc I had to attach and detach her TPN (nutrition) daily at home. They r incredibly susceptible to infection if not properly taken care of.
I was taught to scrub The Hub you never insert a needle into a dirty cap I went to a very I went to a very good University provide my Nursing degree in the first thing we learned in medications what's scrubbing the Hub I am now retired activate 33 years in trauma. Dr ,.yes I have I've had 58 surgies to date and have to have 59 early fall and believe me I always watch to make sure they use a alcohol swab to clean my hub/port before they start or do anything with the hub/port and believe me I've called nurses amd one Dr out on it before yep they got mad and IDC because it's my body and life their playing with.

As an RN with >20 yes experience nearly everywhere within Acute Care, including ICU, GI Lab, PACU, and also Home Health/Hospice, you would be amazed at how many medical professionals fail to wash their hands between patient contact. It’s complete madness to me… I once had to discipline an RN for not washing her hands in the patient’s home prior to performing wound care. The excuse was that she used hand sanitizer in the car. That’s just not good enough! My biggest advice to family members is to make sure your medical professional washes their hands, preferably in front of the patient if possible. Go back to the basics!

I do believe this type of procedure is what killed my Mom. She was fine until she had 'oscopies. Apparently during one of the procedures the person "nicked" her insides and didn't say anything till she went septic and died. Up till then my Mom was able to do for herself, lived in her own home, took care of herself, went out 3+ times a week, etc. Once she was it was over - all we could do was take get home to die. Once home she didn't even last 24 hours. The doctors pushed for the colon/endo-ocopies.
I had a 50 year old healthy client go in for a routine colonoscopy and died 2 days later for the same reason. I’ll never have one!

Damn, I'm getting a colonoscopy endoscopy in a couple weeks. Decade ago, a outpatient kidney stone surgery went bad, they sent me home with Internal bleeding into my bladder.

It is odd that hospitals will ask patients who are in for other reasons to have colonoscopies. A friend's mom went in for pneumonia, was put on hospice, and was taken from the ICU to have this done. She, too, died within days.
It seemed like a money grab on the hospital’s part. Who takes a dying patient with no stomach issues to do this for any other reason? It makes me sad and angry.
Many hospitals lack staff, and it appears that most of their money is filtered to the administrators.
How can they charge $20 for a Tylenol or $600K for a birth and be understaffed?
The medical system is in such bad shape it’s scary.

I have tried, but they have refused. I'm always fearful with each shift change bc of it. For me, it's a matter of life and death almost immediately bc I have a Groshong. They have refused cleaning the end tube/valve, replacing or cleaning the connector valve twice per week. Each time, I'm hooked up to my tpn, which is 18 hours per day, 7 days a week, they skip cleaning and even flushing with 10 ml 0.9 saline, followed by 10 ml heparin whenever I'm hospitalized. As a result, I've been seriously infected numerous times. Cdiff, ecoli, staff ~ all the the same time. I've had other infections whenever I'm inpatient. I have a serious fear of going to the hospital bc of it. I've never been infected at home, EVER.
Edit to add: I've had to call the charge nurse, and administration when they've refused telling me I'm wrong or making a big deal about it bc they know what they're doing. They insist I don't have a degree.
This is what happens when patients ❤😂are not allowed to supervise injectable medicines be shown in their sealed state in front of them. Cancer patients have sealed medicines unsealed and mixed and then injected into them and you never know if the people are actually giving them the right medicine or something else. If the patient asked to be allowed to see then they put bad things in your medical record against you
I'd say "Woah, woah, woah. Please explain what you're going to do before you do it. Informed consent and all."
Best to never ever get sick. Good grief. Definitely essential to go prayerfully when seeing any medical professionals.

When I was a nursing student , my teacher always said regarding cleaning the hub "clean like a washing machine" meaning round and round and round . I never forgot that advice
My late husband had a Hepatic Lobectomy in October 2023. Unfortunately he developed a serious bacterial infection and received post op anti bacterial meds. His was discharged to home and I was required to deliver via his chemo port the daily antibacterial meds. I was trained to do this by a nurse. I was religious about cleaning the port before and after I injected the antibacterial meds. I made sure I cleaned my hands before I gloved up. I wore a sterile mask. I was concerned that I could cause an infection. I was left with a full box of antibacterial wipes to clean his port! Thank you!!!

I had my baby in 1985 and bled out during a C-section. They had to give me too blood transfusions days apart. I got a letter from hospital 3 months later to come in for an HIV test. Thank God it was negative!

I had a PICC line for about 6 weeks to treat Lyme’s, and I had to do my own infusions at home every day. The nurse who showed me how to do them emphasized scrub the hub and even let me take a video so I could reference the steps in case I forgot. She showed me how to flush the lines with saline and heparin, etc. I was so nervous to mess it up because I had no idea what I was doing and the line ended so close to my heart. I think they said it was in my aorta. I really appreciated her patience and knowledge. She answered all my questions, even repeats because I kept forgetting, and assured me I could do it and that she’d be on call if I ever needed her. She really was too. She took care of me when one of the lines got clogged and blood started congealing around entrance. Turned out there was a kink in the white side. Xray couldn’t pick it up it was so small, but we saw it immediately after the line was pulled. Anyway, whenever I hear “scrub the hub,” I think of her. She was one of the special people who helped save my life. I will be forever grateful. ❤️

@@somethingkindawonderful3034 I don’t know where she lived, but I don’t think she did anything wrong. It was part of some program that let patients get infusions at home. I wasn’t strong enough to travel to and from a hospital every single day so it was extremely helpful to be able to do infusions at home. She had to work with my doctor and her company, plus a delivery company for my meds. They scheduled her appoints for her, so if something is wrong with that, then it should be on the company, not her. As far as I know she did her job correctly. She came once a week to change my bandage, any other times anything seemed wrong, and at the end to pull my line.
They were using some interesting tech. I don’t know much about it, but my meds came in a weird pressurized bulb that self infused so it didn’t have to be hung up or rely on gravity. They gave me a fanny pack to hold the medicine bulb while it was infusing so I could still move around if I wanted. I was infusing an antibiotic, so they probably weren’t as worried about infection as someone with another issue like cancer. Idk. I just followed instructions. It was scary because it was new to me, but not hard. I’d been sick for 5 years and it was the first time a doctor was willing to treat me for Lyme’s, so I did the best I could in a bad situation. I was pretty close to death at the time and was happy for any help I could get. I most certainly will not say anything bad about one of the few people who helped me get my life back.
In NJ oral surgeon caused quite a number of patients to be ill. One died. He reused syringes, reused 1x use vial, he stored equipment & meds in the bathroom. It was picked up a area hospital after it was determined that a number of patients had same bacterial cardiac infections after using the same oral surgeon. He lost his license for only 5 years. That was it!!!
Thank you for your honesty in highlighting this issue. In my case it was an oral hygienist ( hygienist?) and dentist that was lax. I had a cast made by 1, and a tooth filling from the other. Both spoke on their cellphone then wanted to put those same gloved hands in my mouth. With the dentist, I looked up at the overhead light as I lay back…which was smeared with a build up of repeated adjustments- clearly hadn’t been cleaned in weeks. Another complaint from me-the level of pain afterwards seemed extreme. I rarely go to dentists now; fearing infections like HIV or Hep B more than I fear pain.
I had a lumbar fusion about 8 months ago and there was an incident. I was put to sleep and the next thing I know, I’m fully conscious, but paralyzed and cannot breathe. I heard myself gasping. Then I must have been given more meds to put me out. It was terrifying and I think of it often. I said something in the hospital and to my surgeon later, but I was gaslighted. This feels like a bigger deal. I also noted in my surgical notes that my blood pressure tanked and I was given adrenaline. I’m so confused trying to figure this out myself!

In the 80’s I worked as a dental assistant and I realised the dentist was reusing the disposable needles. This was when HIV first became an issue.
I rang the dental association and was told without proof I could be sued. As a 17yo I was too scared to pursue it.
I realise now I could have just kept the disposable needles and they would show they’d been used on multiple people. Then again DNA testing only came about until the 90’s.

When my father had his pacemaker replaced, they introduced MARS infection directly into his heart. He had antibacterial drugs dripped into this heart for months to clear the infection. Thankfully, they were able to clear the infection and he lived for many more years.
Most nurses in my hospital don't scrub my bionector and I am on immunsuppressive medication. That's why I always take an antiseptic spray with me when I go to hospital and desinfect it myself before injections🙈

I was hospitalized this week for a uti and sepsis.Was in hospital 4 days and asks and noticed when they scrubbed the hub. Never would have known about it, if not for your videos. Thank you for the education. Having 2 surgeries soon and am very nervous because of past bad surgeries. One the fixed a hernia I didn't know I had . I showed the surgeon the one protruding and he didn't fix it. The other one was on my foot and the nerve block didn't work. Felt like I woke up from a nightmare. Your videos are so important because so much can go wrong. Even when you feel calm and ready. I have more anxiety now about surgery, which I never had before.

I watch every dr/nurse/tech I encounter with and always make sure they are opening new packs infront of me . I’ve had surgery once . The first anesthesiologist did unwrapped fresh packaging. Told me it’s gonna be fine snd when I question every medication she had an answer but I know it’s rare now a days I was just extremely grateful

I worked with the cows who had the Jarvik 7 hearts and we were taught early to "scrub the hub!" Many workers there frequently forg🎉ot, but if I witnessed this, I immediately corrected them and sometimes reported to Dr. It is critical to do this. Even though they were only cows, the amount of $ and research that went into this amazing project meant every step was critical. I became very close to a cow named King, our longest living animal. I could not watch his autopsy and I sang to him before he died and held him tightly!!

When I lived in Las Vegas NV, a gastro doc spread Hep to a number of patients during colonoscopy. He was allegedly using the propofol vial for multiple patients.
He knew what he was doing. His wife was intercepted at the LV airport trying to leave the country with a suitcase full of $$$$. Lucky, he wasn't my doc.

Who was it?
Using the same vial of propofol in itself should not be able to spread anything. Vials are sterile and the needles you draw the medicines out of the vial should also be sterile. It’s then ejected into the IV through itself with no needle but since Propanol is an IV Push that they when have to use a port AKA hub with may or may not require the needle to still remain on the syringe. Most likely you are doing it needless so if you happened to use the propanol vial again you would need another sterile needle so how would that be contaminated other then using a bunch of dirty needles. But you should only have to draw up Propanol once and that is 1 1/2 seconds because you are unconscious. And to top it off have you ever seen the amount of propanol that they give you? It’s a very hefty amount so I can’t imagine that there is any or much left. Insulin bottles are used over and over again with and if instructions are followed remaining sterile because you never draw up medicine without reusing a dirty needle.
I think the doctor has a good theory but I just doesn’t feel correct or sound right. I’m totally just guessing but could it be an mistake that run through the blood collect, blood screening, and transfusion be the all reasons and that’s up to med/large dogs. The pound and other organization re
Btw the reason that stray animals in the shelters or pounds over cost about $35 versus way over a hundred dollars when you kitten or puppies get fixed. The pounds and other organizations reuse as much of the single use items. They will do like 5 cats using just one surgical kit. Whereas, your local vet uses one surgical kit for each cat and never reuses them. Every cat or dog comes out of a vet surgery after only one completely sterile kit was used and thrown away. At the pound and other organizations, the cat that you pick out comes without the insecurity on not knowing if your cat ended up by chance getting a brand new kit or worrying how many cats used and how unsterile wat the equipment.
@@katiekat4457I worked rescue vet medicine too. We tried to use a pack per litter and did our own packs to minimize cost. Also mixed our anesthesia cocktail in a bag of saline and dosed accordingly. Used TKX at the time and did an amazing number of spay/neuters with a very tiny complication rate, especially in young animals.
When I was in the hospital the consumer advocate stopped by to ask me if I had any problems with the care and I pointed out that my IV hub was left dangling off my hand when the nurse had to disconnect the line so that I could go into the bathroom and it was exposed to the toilet! The nurse never put a cover over it and left it exposed! This was a major, famous hospital in the Houston Medical Center in 2021.
May 10, 2024, I became my mom’s medical advocate after being admitted to the hospital for severe stomach pain.
1st~ make sure you are listed as a person who can make medical decisions if needed.
2nd ~ MOST IMPORTANTLY ~ purchase a notebook which will be suitable & you like. You will use this notebook EVERYDAY to DOCUMENT each day your loved one is in the hospital. Date each page, write down the name of “the doctor of the day,” the nurse, everything you observe- procedures, IVs, medicine, test (try to document the time if possible).
I promise, the only way to protect your loved one is daily documentation. Yes, be proactive while in the hospital, but you also need detailed notes.
I work as a direct health care worker and this is good advice. I haven't had many surgeries done in my lifetime luckily. To advocate for another person even yourself this could be helpful. Even to just not down something you have a question about or a concern.
I sometimes feel if I speak up about asking if they scrub the hub, I will be concern what they will do or say once they put me to sleep. Maybe I'm just paranoid.😵💫

I've seen multiple people, doctors, nurses, and lab technician use a bare finger on the skin AFTER they scrubbed prior to iv inserting or lab draw. I've also seen a registered nurse educator not change gloves between patients while giving injections.
I was a scrub tech working in endoscopy in the 90's. The nurses were motivated to have fast turn over so they would get a bonus. I caught them not properly cleaning scopes. This was back in the Cidex days. I saw ERCP scopes dripping bile after being removed from the Cidex machine. The nurse would wipe the tip off with a paper towel, and take it to the doctor. I turned them into infection control, and was told they "probably needed more training." (!!) I quit soon after that.

Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. I have had multiple surgeries (mostly orthopedic) and have had a hub on IVs at various times. Thankfully, I have not had any infections after these many surgeries. I do remember nurses coming in to my hospital rooms to give me some sort of medicine to keep my vein open as well as for other reasons, but I can’t recall whether the hub was cleaned each time. 🤷♀️
If/when I’m in need of another surgery, I will certainly keep “scrub the hub” in mind. I will be sharing this on my FB page to warn my family and friends as this is really important. Thank you for always helping us to advocate for yourselves. 🤟
Ugh, I can't imagine ever a case where an ET tube would be reused. Those tubes are hanging in infectious bodily fluids when in the trachea.

@@MedicalSecrets Really? More burden on the already worried and stressed patient? A patient who may already be pre-medicated (as I need to be to even show up.) No one can watch everything all the time to this extent, even if you are fully calm and competent. Or have someone with you. There don't seem to be good solutions for so very much of this, but patients get ground up and spit out far too often, even when you DO politely but persistently advocate (or try to) you often aren't "allowed" to, or you can end up being denied care at all. I'm SO grateful for your sharing of information and validation of so many of these things that are so often gaslit, but you still seem to have an idealized attitude about what the majority of "regular" people patients can realistically do for themselves in any of these situations.

I saw an anesthesiologist looking for something in some drawers. He was opening the drawers with his hands, but then he closed them with his feet, over and over again. He thought that he was being funny and efficient.

I do believe that it might have been a large vial, double dipping with other pts without using a new syringe/ vial but I really have been sickened literally while working and finding “sterile” filthy equipment, instruments. At one small hospital where I worked I was the only fully trauma certified nurse and floor working administrator by default and their policy book was from 1955 and so was the equipment. I was hired to upgrade but they fought against spending a small amount verses being shut down. The nurses would constantly ask for smoking breaks and their long painted nails gave me reason to send them home. So I appreciate your information and hope that more will blow the whistle and expect the highest quality of care. Thank you for passing on what to watch for. 😊

They don't. They cannot be autoclaved. They simply soak and wipe them with antiseptics. I never go for procedures unless I have to. I never go just because my healthcare provider thinks I am such and such age, so I should have a colonoscopy, etc. They are constantly looking for ways to make money of you, at your peril.
Some things are a one time use, as well.

And a friend of hers who did cologuard and had a negative result did a colonoscopy and she was actually positive for cancer . So be careful with cologuard results . Please

Dr. Kaveh: I found the music in the "Scrub the Hub" story very distracting and may make it harder for other fans (like me) to focus on the story. Would you please consider removing it?

This is terrifying, I got a scare with endoscopy where I received a letter telling me that I may have been contaminated with hepatitis B from a Dr suspected to not clean his instrument properly. I rush to my family doc and we did the testing and it was negative but the waiting was crazy. since then I am careful as much as I can. Thanks Dr. for your advice.🇨🇦👏👏👏
Wow, why are we see an uptick on these case issues? And what can I do as a patient to do my part. Hah you just mentioned that. 1. And if I as a patient started asking questions when you meet the Dr like you, are they going to get their nose out of joint. Tracie

Honestly as a disabled RN I think people don’t care, they have let themselves be the focus of their life and don’t have any love or very little for their neighbors. Things have changed dramatically and escalated to such a degree that I don’t feel that anyone should be left alone in a hospital without an advocate and it’s a shame because nurses are considered to be patient advocates yet I have seen so many not open their mouths when even a physician is out of line.
