Very nice show. You mentioned that The Hole is one of the few galleries that stay open late. It seems to me all galleries should stay open late, some folks actually have to work 9 to 5. Here's to The Hole!
I just realized that "The Hole", has the best shows, from remembering watching your previous videos, so why is this gallery not more well known? But thank you James and Kate, for this video. The Hole seems like a place to see the most current art in New York. Thank you.
Most of these are not digital photography recreated in paint. They are digital paintings 2D or 3D, some recreated with paint on canvas. Some of the same software is used in film special effects and 3D animation.
Hi James - Your comment about artists working to "state their position in the field of cultural production" , both intrigued and distributed me. The implication being that artists are working to fit in and make it in the art world by producing, not unlike an assembly line, to satisfy cultural changes and/or a cultural demand. Can you elaborate a bit on this and the ideas around it? Also, can you point us towrds artists or sites where "technical debates" can be read/heard? Thank you!
Yes @Delta888ful actually what I said was the artists "stake" their positions (like a miner stakes his claim)... "The Field of Cultural Production" is a theory and book title from the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Bourdieu Bourdieu was peripherally connected with the Deconstructionists, but used hard science to try and understand how society structures itself, and why and how it creates "culture". His magnum opus is "Distinctions" a book that came out in the early 1970s which used extensive surveys to categorize various classes and fractions of classes, by how they consumed and displayed their consumption as "life style". Beyond his theory of the "cultural field" his other important theories are "cultural capital" and the "habitus", and regarding art, his influence among contemporary cultural theorists has been extensive. As to "technical debates'" much of this happens in the galleries during openings, or at the bar or after party but a couple of publications or websites you might look at are: The Brooklyn Rail brooklynrail.org/ and Two Coats of Paint www.twocoatsofpaint.com Also, I've always hopped that these channels here at RUclips might provide some space for conversations about painting/art...Thanks JK
@@jameskalm STAKE!! Sorry I misheard. Well it looks like I have some reading to do re: Bourdieu. I may be picking your brain with some of it :) Wish it was possible to know in advance where/when the REAL discussions, technical or cultural, take place. I'm so hungry for this. I've been to too many galleries where no one is discussing art, which is incredibly dissapointing...and dare I say disrespectful to the artist's work. I'd love to hear the discussions, learn from them and participate where I can. Unfortunately, people are either gossiping or glued to their cell phones. Just a few weeks ago I subscribed to Brooklyn Rail, so it looks like I'm on the right track. Never heard of the other publication, so I'll look into it as well. Thank you, James!! As always you are so generous with your responses. Keep up the great work!
@@Delta888ful I will make one recommendation that I picked up from the great Irving Sandler. When asked how an artist or group of artists could begin to have an influence, or relevance he said something like "you have to build your own art world". It took me years to figure out what he meant, then more time to start building. This channel is still part of that unfinished project...
Seems part of staking out one's cultural production in an art world is to know what cultural position galleries take and will show.... thus an artist can make $$$.. else how can an artist continue to produce? Pretty much always been that way. Please the patron, the collector, the market.
Love your videos. When ever I need a shot of art and culture, it's my go-to, thanks.

Alan does a lot of work with adult swim. You can find a lot of his videos on RUclips.
Enjoyed this video, almost all the colors are at 100% +++. Nothing played down and few earth colors to cool the mix but the creativity is nice to see.
Computer assisted graphic thing ,kinda sums up the show .
