    Love me some classic Post Hardcore music. You should do a guide to Fugazi or 5 albums to get you into Post Hardcore

    • @nikolademitri731
      @nikolademitri731 7 лет назад +3

      Dylan McMahon I didn't know Fugazi was considered post-hardcore till this video. I'm only slightly familiar with their music (I've had countless ppl insist I dive into their catalog, just slow to get on it), but I like pretty much everything by them I've heard. Maybe I'm a serious sleeper fan of the genre. Tbh it's the "emo" label that always scared me from "post-hardcore". Perhaps I've been a fool.

      Guide to Fugazi would be good, but a guide to Unwound would be even better IMO

      Actually, quality of the guide probably depends on which band Oliver is more passionate about

    I know Spiderland, don't know this band/album but I am hyped to check them out! I think you did a wonderful job at explaining this band to people who aren't familiar with them, and made a lot of great connections/references, and I learned more about the Midwest scene and it's revival, plus the important difference between A Day To Remember and Sunny Day Real Estate!
    Also, I am beyond excited for the Bjork guide holy gronolly

  • @Randomguy190
    @Randomguy190 7 лет назад +4

    Maaan what a great pick for an essentials episode! I was incredibly fortunate to find a copy of this at my local vinyl shop, and have loved it ever since. I don't know that I'd put this solidly in either the post-hardcore or mathrock camps, it really inhabits that space between, without falling entirely into either. A really unique and beautiful album.

    You should do Froberg's other bands Hot Snakes, and Obits. Both are like Jehu with a twist. Both have a lot of the kind of discordant, angular riffs that drove DLJ.Pitchfork, Froberg's 1st band to record an album (Eucalyptus)is harder to find but no less awesome than Hot Snakes, Jehu, and Obits. I'd definitely classify it as a sort of proto emo album. Everything Froberg has ever recorded is emo/post hardcore genius. Thanks for the video brother.

    "Bible innit" made me lol

  • @GenteelCretin
    @GenteelCretin 6 лет назад

    First wave "emo" is one of the biggest genre misnomers. I always likened DLJ to more of a west coast flavored Sonic Youth with the requisite guitar mayhem and occasional feedback solos that sizzle with that SoCal vibe.
    And yo, the s/t was the real killer. Al Burian's bit about them in Burn Collector 11 flipped the switch for me and made me realize that tracks like "Good Luck In Jail" and "If It Kills You" are legit meditation music for the human soul awakened to the duplicity of being an individual in an indifferent modern world. When I was burning out in my failed venture in Boston, I used to wake up to "If It Kills You" and Flag's "My War" ('82 demo cut) and fall asleep to The Stooges' "Dirt" to reaffirm my place in the cycle of the day-to-day world. Die to relax, declare war, and burn. The circle of life.

    amazing album and a great review... Here some suggestions id like to see on your channel: Sonic youth, Cardiacs, Scott Walker, Nine inch nails, DJ Shadow, old experimental artist like Harry Partch, john cage etc ... also pop is pretty unpopular on our sophisticated community so maybe id like to see something like Abba, prince, Smiths, The Cure? :D Keep up the good work :)

    Oliver! May I ask, where all are you heading during your trip? Coming around Pittsburgh, by chance? If you are, I'd practically insist on buying you a beer, or bourbon, etc! Dunno if your just on vacation or in the states for business, *but if you're swinging by Pittsburgh, and want any suggestions for great food, nightlife, art, etc, I'd gladly give suggestions!* :)
    Thanks again for the content. I'll have to give this a listen. I'm not huge on post-hardcore, but I do own "Relationship Of Command" haha. Cheers, mate! 🍻

      At any rate, enjoy your trip to our wonderful and admittedly backwards Empire. Enjoy yourself some of that quality, legal Cali reefer, mate! Haha

    God, when I heard em say PTV and ADTR were bands that passed for "post-hardcore" these days and he said "ew", I felt so euphoric. I HATE those bands. Most contemporary "post-hardcore" bands are lame, poppy, and cringed-levels of emo. Thank you Oliver for understand what real hardcore music is. I'm really gonna listen to Drive Like Jehu as soon as possible. I want to turn you to a band called Touche Amore. Not sure if you're familiar with them but their an ACTUAL post-hardcore band from California and they have a great discography of albums and the sound of each one shows significant levels of progression and stylistic growth. Highly recommend you check them out.

      Yes! Jeremy has also been sincere and confessional lyrically since the beginning. Which is another thing pretty that was universal in 80s post-hardcore in my opinion. Not to disrespect ADTR, as this statement is probably not entirely true of their entire catalogue, but it adds more to the layers of music than, say, the line "Disrespect your surroundings." Well, to me at least.

      Daniel Bernas love deep cuts, but I'm more a fan of silent shout and shaking the habitual tbh... it calls for a knife guide, no? 🍻 cheers 🥂
      Edit - I actually did not make the connection to the channel name until after I posted this, as absurd as that might sound.. Dear Christ.. Perhaps for the aesthetic, Deep Cuts would be most appropriate, yes..

    • @danielbernas2293
      @danielbernas2293 7 лет назад +1

      Nikola Demitri LOL. yeah, I think that silent shout is superior to Deep Cuts, but Shaking the Habitual is their best, even though ranking their records is kind of apples and oranges. not counting their opera, I think that the Knifes albums get better chronologically

      @HEARTMACHINEPLUSULTRA 7 лет назад

      It's the same with a lot of artists really. For me (and sam by the looks of it), we got into post hardcore through bands like ADTR and PTV. A gateway drug into the genre, if you will. I definitely don't listen to them much now that I'm in my 20s, but albums like Homesick and Selfish Machines hold a special place in my heart.

    • @makotoisthebestprotag1870
      @makotoisthebestprotag1870 7 лет назад

      Universe Arcana I outgrew that shit. Realized those "post-hardcore" bands are whiny, pitiful excuses but I'm gonna be honest: PTV did indeed introduce to me to post-hardcore, and surely enough, it allowed to find bands in the genre that are waaaaaaay better.

      Blue Concrete Fields Sorry for being brash, there. Let me try to be civil. I have a large disdain for PTV's music and others like it because it's redefined post-hardcore to point where it has lost its original meaning and now mainstream "post-hardcore" is a shadow of its more independent and brash origin.

    • @blueconcretefields4329
      @blueconcretefields4329 7 лет назад

      Ezequiel Melian i agree, I personally see them as just emo/pop because there is pretty much no connection to hardcore in the sound. And i dont know why bands like that are labeled in that genre cause they're not really post hardcore.
