He's at an interesting level of skill where he's better than most if not all of his audience but sill can make mistakes that are simultaneously humorous and educating. In addition, he's clearly enjoying this series (presumably because it's challenging in an accomplishable way and is a game he enjoys) which makes the banter and gameplay massively more enjoyable. To oversimplify matters: it's probably skill + challenge + player enjoyment + viewer enjoyment/engagement that all coalesce into what has genuinely become one of his best series. But what do I know? I only took Intro Psych.
Remember that the computer doesn't take the time into count so even if you were up in that game you were down on time and you probably wouldn't have been able to play at peek Tomo level ! So good job ! :D
For those counting at home, the reason the computer loves the position in game 1 that NL didn't is it's a free pawn that ALSO threatens a really mean check with queen to B1. The only move is block with the rook, and it's not pretty for white.
Why do I love NL's chess series more than anything else there is on the internet? I don't know myself, but I sure keep refreshing with my dinner every evening!
Do you ever get a powerful hit of weirdly specific bittersweet nostalgia? My grandpa used to say “I’m here to tell ya” constantly when he was still around. For some reason NL saying it at the beginning there was like a fist to the heart for some reason. Guess the Egg was just giving off big grandpa vibes today for some reason.
Accuracy can be misleading if you're in a winning/simplified position - it's harder to make the best/good moves when you're in a heavily-involved middlegame. The other thing is if you have fewer moves in the game/resign early: making 90 good moves out of 100 is easier than making 18 good moves out of 20.
Meanwhile I had my first online games yesterday, and one of them came out with an accuracy of 8.5 for me and 7.9 for my opponent. The key moments was this massive wall alternating between "Blunder" and "Game changer - you responded perfectly to their blunder!" The game ended when I had only my king left, they were 2 moves from mate for a solid 10 moves, and I won because their time ran out when I was pinned and one move from being mated. 10/10, I'm ready for the big leagues!
If you tried to tell me id feel any sort of POG at a draw by the start of the series, id have laughed. But i couldnt agree more that that was a hard fought draw, excellent content!! Love this series
It's interesting to see the growth of NL as he plays more rounds of chess -- like the major differences in how he anticipates his opponent's move from episode 1 to now. Can't wait for the Magnus Carlsen match in episode 1500
Hey NL will the Chess masterclass with GothamChess be released on either your or his channel? Missed it and I can't watch the VOD, I'd love to watch it. Have a great day, take care, hugs and kisses 🐝🎺
From what I remember hearing on the stream, I think they will both upload it. But it didn't seem like they had discussed the specifics at that point, so idk what they'll do exactly.
Since you've said you need some more knowledge in d4 openers, and I understand you're a man of zane, I recommend the Benko gambit, also known as Volga. Basically, you sac the a and b pawns for quick activation of multiple pieces, and if the opponent doesn't want to capture your pawns you can quite easily back into a normal d4 opener!
Not gonna lie, I’ve always been interested in chess but never felt good enough or intelligent enough to really play and be a challenge. However after watching NL play and learning some things from here and there, then getting into the late game in some of these videos and me predicting a move that he then does makes me feel good because even tho I don’t know why the move would exactly be strong I’m learning things I’ve always had a genuine interest in. Love the vids egg. Also love the analysis afterwards as it helps me understand why certain moves would be strong or not.
"Actually I kinda like this open game here" Yeah, so it'll be easier to trade queens, right? Loving the chess, Ryan! And the lesson yesterday was straight pogged!
That last game i gasp when NL offer the queen trade. When you are attacking and up in tempo, you want to keep your piece usually alive. Trading queen removes alot of punch from your position.
Man, I looked away for a second to take a drink, and when I looked back I thought something huge happened - never seen you concentrate so much for a single move... Took me 30 seconds to realize I had paused it. Was still thrilling though...
I feel you won a game where I had 91% accuracy, then my next game I won a game by timeout and my accuracy was 21% and my opponents was 19% :(. Sometimes the chess do get sloppy
Hello NL, I'd love it if you could go a little bit deeper in the analysis on the key moves (so play through a few more moves in the line the engine recommended to figure out the point behind what it's saying). Thanks for the awesome content!
Qa5 was a good move cause it defends the e4 pawn and if Qxb2 Rb1 Qc2 Rc1 and the queen is trapped. NL actually hung the e4 pawn in several ways multiple times this game
Queens Gambit thinking montage: Grand orchestral score
NL's Gambit thinking montage: PUSH ME. AND THEN JUST TOUCH ME. TILL I CAN GET MY. SATISFACTION.
This, 100x this.
Lmao
POG ME
He’s too powerful for us mere mortals.
enelle’s gambit
NLs laugh sounds like how I'd imagine a mouse would laugh when it finds free cheese.
LOL man, underrated comment!!! :D
Ehehhaheheahe
Baldmau5?
what is this comment 😂😂
It fills you with determination
"The only way to experience what it means to live", proceeds to draw
"I am perfectly happy with this draw"
Computer: YOU WERE WINNING!
*Anish Giri has entered the chat*
Horrible draw.
Every time NL says he knows what I'm thinking I literally have no idea what he's talking about
"I know what you're thinking" combos straight into a blunder
@Miasma hey don't get me wrong I respect the man and his massive balls

I've been watching NL for so long, and this has become my favorite series he's ever produced. Keep them coming, I'm hooked! :)
Same dude
I love it too for me its def up there with fahrenheit and dark souls :)

@@caeligocielo5634 I think you nailed it :)
This series has certainly gotten me hooked back on chess. Best part of the day.

This! I don't know how many time I've entered the endgame with a piece up and 5 minutes down and just get flagged.
Very fair and wholesome comment :)
NO ONE IN THE HISTORY ever thought the day would come when I was more pogged for Chess than I am for Spelunky. But guess what? That day has come!
and it's not gonna end
Oooh baby time to watch Internet Grandmaster "Northern" Lion!
For those counting at home, the reason the computer loves the position in game 1 that NL didn't is it's a free pawn that ALSO threatens a really mean check with queen to B1. The only move is block with the rook, and it's not pretty for white.
Dont you love NL analyzing a game? "good move, best move, good move, questionable move, good move, best move"
good move. good move. BEST move. good-
Best move... Best move... BEST MOVE!..... very questionable move...😐
BEEEST MOVE!!!!
Oh the computer HATED that
Unironically yes
Cant wait for when the backlog catches up to his lessons with GothamChess
Whaaaaat this is a thing?? Omg now I litterally can't wait to see that!
@@andregoepfert2745 they had a live lesson on gotham's twitch channel. The vod is locked behind a paywall though. Should be uploaded to youtube soon!

yo, for real? sad times. guess i have to go back to playing it myself
This is the only series in the history of my RUclips media consumption that I make sure to leave a like for. I love NL's chess antics.
When NL’s sloppy game has 91 accuracy and a good game for me has 80 accuracy...

Dw, Ive been watching chess for a year and I’m only rated 1000. 50% accuracy is a great game for me.
If you tried to tell me id feel any sort of POG at a draw by the start of the series, id have laughed. But i couldnt agree more that that was a hard fought draw, excellent content!! Love this series
This series really gets me man, that last game was truly the poggiest! Keep it going NL

Ofc NL will upload it to YT. Prolly put it onto the pile of chess backlog so we'll have to wait for a while...
i love how he still gets over 90& accuracy with the 2nd game!
Such a pogged out series. The prefect blend of just chilling with NL and big brain content
It's okay to draw sometimes and take a breath. After all, Rome wasn't built in a day.
I've never been more hooked to NL's content dude!
I love it when he says "Now I know what you're thinking..." As if I know something about playing chess. Thanks for the pos-vibes NL!
Best series 2020!
Ah so imagine when NL discovers the "pre-move" Let the poggs reign!
the second game is standard scandinavian opening, its almost the same every time so you can play really fast without thinking about it
When NL sees the best moves from the computer and you see a light click in his head it really creates some great moments
Honestly, this chess series has brought back my interest in the game. Loving the series

Here's unrequested advice from someone who is bad: I think NL undervalues pushing pawns in the midgame.
Could see it
Loving this series, keep it up!
Just wanted to drop in and say thanks for the consistently excellent content! Chess, Spelunky 2, Geo, Slashers.
Three games of chess a video would make me a happy camper!
I love NL just exclaiming shit. Best part of any video
LOVING the chess series NL, got me back into playing!
Dublinski 🥇

Sounds like me on my wedding night. Questionable move followed by BEST move.
Great episode, love the series
Great content as always! Love to see it
The way he talks about the second game in this video versus the way it’s talked about in his coaching session with Gotham
looking forward to this series everyday ❤️
This is like by far my favorite series behind spelunky rn
I played chess a lot with my bros when I was younger.. this has lit a fire back in my passion for the game. thanks to ryan of course.
I wake up everyday just to watch NL’s videos only to be bored afterwards because I watched them all
You got me into chess, so I thank you sir.
nice dog bro
Love your chess series
Rook on the enemy second row = POG
I'm surprised this isnt sponsored by trading 212 because NL seems obsessed with the idea. Love the chess as always, it makes my day. :)
Yes NL I too have seen the music video and it is also my "thinking" music.
"i'm happy with that draw. i think the engine would agree... nope, i was up by 4 points" lol!
Can tell NL is having fun with this series.
Thanks for the company! please don't axe this series even with jerk comments. you still definately better than most of us (or atleast me)!

What a series!
Who knew I could get so riled up about chess that I shout, "Take his pawn!" at my phone? 😁
The thinking music had me rolling tbh
“Why is he moving so fast?”
I believe it’s called an opening NL
Are you winnin son?
WHOA! queen side castle!? woaaah... lemme take a look at this move

Hello NL, I'd love it if you could go a little bit deeper in the analysis on the key moves (so play through a few more moves in the line the engine recommended to figure out the point behind what it's saying). Thanks for the awesome content!
You don't have to be better than your opponent, your opponent has to be worse than you.
This series must only end once NL has fulfilled the prophecy of 2000 elo egg god.
he won because he wisely chose to get weird instead of funky
Hi, why can't I stop watching this?
I was like: I have never played myself in 10 years but shouldnt you take te pawn lulw
Nothing quite like being rewarded for bad play 😎
I love the series but I cry every time he clicks back instead of the big green retry button in the analysis...
Really loving the chess, Ryab!
Qa5 was a good move cause it defends the e4 pawn and if Qxb2 Rb1 Qc2 Rc1 and the queen is trapped. NL actually hung the e4 pawn in several ways multiple times this game
somehow he's more concerned about getting doubled pawns than any form of piece activity...
