I am impressed with your mentality and the way that you see things in life, isn't easy to find that nowadays, keep up the good job! Greetings from Greece girl!
In general all slavs are more direct than westerners but this girl was obviously selfish and unfriendly ( it has nothing to do with Russians or Slavs).... She knew that people can not sleep because of her but she still kept reading a book.....
I think Eastern Europeans are generally more honest ... so when they’re nice, it’s genuine. Whereas Canadians use it indiscriminately, as an autopilot thing, and it can feel quite superficial. And they won’t go as far (like you said go out of their way) as Eastern Europeans. ❤️
Well, if they're nice then it's genuine. The difference really is the behavior of those who are rude. Would you rather someone be directly harsh or someone who's fake? I think it depends how loud they are. I'm used to the harsh type and it's easier for me to tell them off than to walk circles around people who make it impossible to criticize them.
As an Autralian traveling in Russia a decade back, I always felt safe wherever I went there as the people were always friedly and willing to help. Help even came across the language barrier, I have не русский.
Call me crazy but I think being nice to someone you just met - even if superficially - is better than being blunt and/or rude to someone just to be "genuine". I definitely met a lot of kind people in Ukraine and Russia - but there's no doubt in my mind that Canada is a much warmer and inviting country than both. My wife is Ukrainian and when we got back to Canada we were in the airport and this Canadian couple came up to us smiling and asking about our dog. We realized in that moment with those people that not a single random person in Ukraine or Russia had just walked up to us and started a friendly conversation. My wife said it first "This is why I like living in Canada more than Ukraine". I agreed with her. I do love Russia and Ukraine - but Canada is to us a much friendlier nation.
In Russia it is considered rude or at least not really appropriate to invade strangers' privacy with small talk - probably has to do with communist era and collectivism when there have always been too many people too close to you so you really valued not being bothered minding your own business idk
@@borisyankel3557 Your Quote: ###" is that a thing to be proud of?" ### Did you invite the Germans to invade your country ? I do not quite understand your question, I take from your name, that you are Russian ?
What a BS. How are we supposed to know what it's like if we have never seen a war firsthand? It's been 75+ years since WW2 is over, but I'm just 22. So obviously idk what it's like. What I'm trying to say is that for all of us it's just like a video game.
@@user-fe9pz9wo5b No BS, if you are Russian, and many relatives gave their lives to defend the motherland then, so you don't have to suffer the Nazi Lebensraum now. The world owes Russia a lot for that deed. It was Russia that defeated Nazi Germany.
Alina, I would like to say that I really love your content about Russia and Russian culture. I was born and raised in Moscow, Russia, but now I live in Windsor, Canada. I am trying to learn more about Canadian customs and culture.
People here are very passive aggressive and fake. Make friends with other immigrants to stay sane, don’t be honest with anyone you don’t trust 100% who has proven to have your back. Elite Canadians are well travelled and nice. Young Canadians are so tolerant to your face because they are extremely intolerant behind your back and likely will be racist if you come from a culture of survival values. So be a good liar and find out if the person is liberal or conservative or NDP. Go to the website of those parties and watch the speeches of those party leaders. Ask them what they think of Trump and that you are open minded and won’t be offended either way. If they like him lie how he is the greatest. If they hate him lie how he is the devil. The better you are at lying and telling people what they want to hear instead of being honest the more popular you will be in Canada. If you have aspergers luckily psychiatrists are free and many psychologists are affordable and luckily weed gummy bears is legal as well as medication to help you stay sane in a country where lying and being fake is the greatest virtue.
How's Windsor. Been through there a few times after clearing security at the border. It is what I see through the bus window. Never stopped to look around.
Good videos. Just catching onto them. I've been to Russia twice, first time in 1977 in USSR days and traveled to Irkutsk. I agree with all your points about Russians. Very friendly people. I'd travel back to Russia many times if I could afford to do it.
I always enjoy your videos and your observations. As you know I am an American who has lived in Russia for 20 years and wanted to explain my view of the points you made. When discussing openness in the west, particularly in the US, the view is that they are very open to alternative lifestyles and views but in my travels, to 91 countries no place is more closed-minded and intolerant of differences of opinion as the US and to a little lesser extent Canadians. The concept of thought crimes or having wrong opinions renders a person blackballed in the US, even if the opinion is rational and well supported. Russians have opinions but they do not say yours are wrong, they do not judge others the way North Americans or Europeans do. If your Russian friend is of one vie they would never think less of you if you had another view on social topics. That open to others being different is a big plus for Russians, it is much easier to have friendships based on common interests because differences are not a factor at all. For example, the west thinks gays are repressed in Russia....since they never say Russian TV, sports or the arts to see how many people who happen to be gay are revered.....but having a personal opinion about one's own actions and preferences, unlike in the west, is not expected that others follow the identical thinking. IF you approached a person in Russia and said you were gay, they would have no reaction, because you are a different person so have your own views or behaviors. What they do resent, is when any social movement seeks to force others to internalize it. This whole thought crime concept is very western and is not part of Russian thinking. Your thinking is your thinking and all the Russian cares about when interacting with you is your character, not some label. That includes religion. The believers of all religions or non-faith freely interact and no one tries to convert anyone else. The most common religion is Orthodox but it is not a proselytizing religion so you might know someone well for years socially and it would never come up that they are religious. VERY few ever attend services, but more go for major religious events like Easter, Christmas is a minor religious occasion and has none of the western obsession with gifts and parties. I was dating a girl for 2 years before I found out she was religious, and only then with she said she would be gone for 2 weeks because she was going to a rural forest church to help with the gardens, cleaning, and cooking. If you do not ask directly, you would not know if they were Muslim(20% are), Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, or atheist. That is very Russian, it is personal and people respect personal choices. Education is taken VERY seriously in Russia. It is the primary responsibility of children so study comes before play, sports or recreation.I do not know anyone over 20 who does not have post-high school degrees. As ann employer, I never asked for it but never met an applicant who did not have a degree. Primary school is not the babying sitting as in the US but the breadth of subjects a 10-year-old has had would put American high school seniors to shame. Few work in their specialty but they are qualified for anything due to the wide range of subjects studied. The purpose of education is not just job, or even about job, but for having adults who are broadly educated and competent in all fields. An engineer who also does not know geography or literature is an uneducated person. A doctor who does not understand economics or art is a less competent adult. It is easy to find good employees because everyone you meet knows "stuff" and makes good decisions based on a broad understanding of the human condition. Dating! Yes, I love it here. I feel weird going back to the US and seeing what passes as relations between the 67 genders. It is a battlefield of hostility and eagerness to be offended..If I ask a woman out here in Russia, I know that even if she might not think I am her type, it will be a very pleasant sharing of time, and I know she will be polite very well-groomed and be a great conversationalist and be open for a wide variety of activities because of her broad interests. It is much easier to meet people here in Russia. If I want to meet any woman I see on the street or in a museum or opera, I know that if I am polite and have something interesting to say, I will be a gracious response. If there seems to be a mutual interest to continue the conversation another time, we simply exchange contact information. Simple and lacking stress. In the west judgment is passed by appearances or type of car driven well before a word was spoken and if a guy talked to a girl without her having evidence of his wealth or other superficial traits, the reaction would be extremely rude. I know from experience, when I would drive up in a Maserati and wear the right clothes, in California, there was a very different reaction to random attempted meetings than when walking in casual clothes or driving my 4x4. When it comes to traditional manners, they will be respectful of others and me, and not scream at me (which has happened to me several times back in California) because I quietly arrange for payment. The last American woman I went out to dinner and a gallery opening event screamed at me that I was usurping her power as a woman for paying the bill myself. She made a scene in a nice restaurant. I told that to another American woman and she thought she was in the right to blow up the evening due to my patriarchal attempt to disempower her. I was literally attacked by a woman who was trying to create a fight, I did not know her but she was asking me pointed questions about Russia and how it represses women a men force women to wear makeup, wear heels and dress up to please men. I just replied that there is a different view in Russia, where both men and women think men and women are different, equal but different. So each that enraged her and she took a large bowl of pasta and tomato sauce and dumped it over my head and ruined the party and my new suit. That was 12 years ago and as I hear it has gotten far worse. They do not understand actual equal rights. In Russia, no one thinks the fact that more businesses or universities are headed by women than men is due to some special treatment or set-asides or extra points given to females like in the west. /they assume the reason the woman is head of the department or corporation is simply that she was the best. Since men and women had fully equal rights for over 100 years it means there is freedom to be as they wish. /Women tend to emphasize their femininity and expect men to emphasize their masculinity. But I think those terms are not even understood in the west, they are too charged with ignorant political thinking. Relations between men and women are actually a lot healthier and pleasant here in Russia than the minefield of social interaction in the US where 35 million marriage-age men have given up and refuse to have any dealings with women in what they call the MgTOW movement that grows daily. Here, men and women actually like each other. The hookup generation does not exist here, sure there is sex, but it is not the crazy obsession for both sexes to have objective sex between strangers without bothering to find out the name of their target. I find Russia to be more genuine, open, less judgemental, easier to have true friends, easier to have friends and relationships with a much wider range of people since political views never seem to matter to partners, only one's character. It is hard to compare city attitudes in Canada to rural areas so you might find that the very liberal but biased views of Toronto are quite different from the views in the western cattle country of Canada or the fishing villages on the coast. I think you would have a more full life and lower stress if you simply moved here to Russia. I sense that you really like the depth and sincerity of Russian society and lack of stress. You fit in well and even look Russian, which for women means you look feminine, gracious and approachable. People value your character here and they could see it in you so you were accepted very well. I must say I am much more accepted here by all age and interest groups than anyplace I have ever been.
This is so spot on. I have not been to Russia but I want to one day. I love Russian culture, morals and values. Plus the food! I can't stand America anymore. I feel I have nothing in common with anyone here and it's hard to make nice friends. I actually speak some Russian too. I can also cook a lot of Russian dishes. But you put this nicely. We have been brainwashed by US media. Such a shame.
As a Canadian who lived in Ukraine, I saw that people in Ukraine have very poor personal hygiene. Many people on the street are drunk during the day and smell badly, wear the same clothes days and days in a row. Often the water is turned off to people's apartment and they cannot bathe.
Alina, you do not know how much this is appreciated. Not only the information content, but also the fact that you have Russian translation in subtitles (even though it may not be perfect from all the years you did not speak Russian). I think this Russian translation is very much giving of yourself and is difficult to edit it in, so I am thankful. I could actually co-compare the Russian as I was listening to you in automatic English so easily and I could correlate, words, phrases, different ways of phrasing and the grammar better. You are such a special person. You also answered my question on another vid of what you are going to do after Moscow in your travels. Thanks so much.
Aw thank you so much! I'm glad you're enjoying the content. It's actually not me doing the subtitles because it really would take me so long and also I don't have a Russian keyboard. One very kind subscriber is helping me and also my cousin in Ukraine, so very grateful for them. Wishing you all the best!
I’ve always got on better with Russians, Ukrainians, Poles and the few other easterners I’ve known than my fellow Canadians, I just love them. And the drift from Canada life has been happening stronger each yr for me. Great topic Alina!
You have a great openness of thought, which HAS to come from not attending university. And you express yourself naturally, and project a certain niceness which must relate to Canada. You are a gift to RUclips!
I think importance of university is connected with Soviet period and then 90s, when people believed that there’s a bright future where everyone will live in perfect society and to achieve that “collective happiness” you need to do your best in educating yourself and your children so you and others will push society forward through perfecting science and culture. Pretty materialistic, there was even a song “ We were born to make dreams come true “ ( not individual dreams but common Soviet dream) and it has to do with defying soul and religion and “believing in yourself and communist ideals” ( like it’s now in the west, you should believe in yourself and be proud and promote liberal ideals without any God). However, I was born after fall of USSR, so that’s just my personal opinion
It was also connected to the fact that in the Soviet Union even the best university education was not just totally free but the state actually PAID you money while you were studying in some university or college (a rare case when "In Soviet Russia..." joke will actually be true). So it really made having a degree so common that person without it could ve been a bit of surprise. But on the other hand it seriously lowered the value of having a university education. Now the situation is slowly changing to the more Western practice.

In Australia that sort of person is referred to by the terrm BOUGAN - [Boagan] and is used in the context that the person is 'a bit rough around the edges and less cultured than others.' Bougans are more inclined to consume U.$. media and be seen at the cinema watching 'Holywood Blockbusters' and american sitcoms, or 'trying to rap it like a 'hood' gangster.' It's pretty tacky. If someone calls you a bougan you should definitly be insulted.
One thing I noticed when I went to Russia is that Russians in general don't appreciate the superficially friendly way Americans (and Canadians) appear to be. It certainly seemed weird to me when we moved to the USA from England when I was 11. If you smile at a waitress or barista or provodnitsa in Russia they'll look at you like you're mad or developmentally disabled, and if you say "Have a nice day" most Russians just don't know how to process that.
Agree. There is a saying in Russia: "laughter for no reason is a sign of foolishness". When you are too friendly it looks suspicious. Russians think that westerners wear "fake smiles".
I prefer smile and even fake smile of the sellers when I have to buy something!..Russians and Chinese under comunist times didnt need to smile to please the buyer!

Having lived in Canada for 5 months now, I can definitely agree with the Canadian side of things regarding mannerisms and opinions. Looking forward to see the rest of your content from Russia!
I can tell from my side. I was traveling in USA (not Canada! I am only talking about USA) for 4 months, and I think we are totally different. Completely different. It's about the way you think, the way you relate to other people, to culture, and pretty much everything else. With all liberalism, americans are people who are completely at the mercy of stereotypes, formulaic thinking, who internally do not want to go beyond the constructed understanding of the world, beyond the imposed coordinates and be freer. They're less free than we are. We can talk more freely about a much larger range of things, expressing our opinions without thinking about whether we will be understood correctly. Because the imposed framework imposes behavior. Hmmm. This is a huge topic and it requires a big talk.
Really one of the more interesting videos I've seen on YT for a long time. A comparision between different parts of the world from someone who knows both sides is not what you find too often.

Pretty honest and a hint of humour in there, through the lens of an immigrant. I like it. Also, the Canadian hometown video you have made, featuring the farms and rural towns in the prairies...was fantastic!
You probably didn't notice it because you spoke to Russians in Russian, but if you talk to them in English, they speak English with little intonation, which makes them sound unfriendly. That plus the directness adds to the stereotype of Russians being cold and aggressive, both of which are not true. Another difference I found was that in Russia, females appreciate a compliment and smile like they used to in the West before feminism became popular, but in the West today women might look at you with suspicion or even get angry. And last one, I found Russians more touchy-feely than Westerners. Things like males shaking hands when meeting or even hugging each other. For women, it's hugs and kisses on the cheeks. A male squeezing through a group of women on a crowded bus is met with indifference, but in the West that could land you in trouble. I liked your video Alina and agree with all that you presented.

I don't understand why you need to virtue signal so much about your love for the alternative lifestyle. It is pushed on us Canadians as it is then we get to listen to you go on about how you respect it so much. I hope Russians never let it get to the point that our so called "civilized" countries have gotten to where we let pre-schoolers determine whether or not they identify as boys or girls.
Yeah, that's just wrong. It's weird how quickly everybody accepts these new ideas like they're just filling a vacancy. Letting kids permanently mutilate themselves and gender themselves infertile, a decision that most regret, that's twisted. The government and society don't care about them, they're just using them. And what's scarier is that kids are given these operations now against the will of the parents. The government has more influence on the children than the parents. They've basically replaced them, like in totalitarian regimes.
I love Russia! That girl in the hostel was not a good example - she was simply rude, I am surprised no one kicked her out of the room before you. Russians may not smile all the time (being serious is important in Russia, unless you want to be viewed as a mentally ill person LOL; they smile A LOT when they are joking around with friends), but they will literally give their last shirt to their friend if needed. They are very warm, loyal, and sincere people. You are blessed if you have a Russian friend. PS I love Canada too, it's my home for 12 years now and I have met great people here too! Lots of love!

@@1214101 Honestly, we have many realy CRAZY things in Russia too. Mostly, its connected with "problems of fathers and sons", when people with Soviet thinking want to save our old soviet heritage ,but young people want something new so they find new way in the USA or Western Europe. This conflict exsists in Russia. We cant do the same like in the Europe and we still remeber USSR troubles. That why Putin always says about "unical way" becouse WE DONT KNOW what to do now.
Thanks for the video. I do agree on parts of what you have said and also disagree on some. I am originally from the middle east, Palestine in particular, and I have been living in west for almost 2 decades now. I will tell you that I have more Russian friends here than western ones. They're direct and don't use hypocrisy like it's been used here. That rude girl you met doesn't represent Russian people at all, bad apples are everywhere. Also the conservative values they have in Russia is a big plus for me. I really hope western media and Hollywood don't manage to spread the western values to Russia and else where. They can keep them to themselves. They want to force their values on all countries. I have visited Russia and was pleasantly surprised. I found out that 90% of what the western media and Hollywood show us is just big lies. They make their viewers dumb as a piece of wood. The more you watch the dumber you are.

Milos Djordjevic some westerners are direct as well, Dutch, Germans, Norwegians, maybe not rude direct but they are kinda like that.
I think Eastern Europeans are generally more honest ... so when they’re nice, it’s genuine. Whereas Canadians use it indiscriminately, as an autopilot thing, and it can feel quite superficial. And they won’t go as far (like you said go out of their way) as Eastern Europeans. ❤️
Totally agree!
Too nice is not nice, less fake more integrity.
As a Canadian yes I can be a little bit autopilot but at the same time that doesn’t mean it’s disingenuous.
Can't agree more having seen both the sides

Good to hear that ☺️
"Autralian"?? Do you mean you're "Australian"?

Good videos
That was elaborate! I'm glad I've read it.
Thank you for your commentary. It's really refreshing to see such understanding of our lifeviews from a foreigner.

You have a great openness of thought, which HAS to come from not attending university. And you express yourself naturally, and project a certain niceness which must relate to Canada. You are a gift to RUclips!
I see her personality reflecting her mom and dad. Both would be great people to know.
Very interesting point!

@@kingofthedarkhorizons3617 Said Hello and smiled, this is the norm! And walk with a tight smile all the time ... it looks strange!)) And you should not impose your culture on others. That 's why they don't like the United States, that they impose everything on everyone!!!
A friend of mine from Ukraine told me that in the USSR, if a person asks someone, "How are you?" If the person responds, "Fine, thanks." The person asking will be very offended, as that person will expect a detailed report of how that person is.

Hmmm. This is a huge topic and it requires a big talk.
that jumper suits perfectly your outstanding eyes, Alina ;o)

Your evaluations and point of views are rewarding and informative! Thank you!

Being from Warsaw, Poland and now living near Toronto, I would have to agree with your comparison. Disregard for appearance and education, lack of common courtesy... are common in the GTA. Wish I could return to my homeland to be with family.
Hello my beautiful Ukrainian, Russian and Canadian Friend. Love your videos 🌷♥️. Thanks for sharing. 🥰
Sorry to make it long and political but that is what I believe. And I am planning on visiting Russia more and more because I loved it, loved the people, and the language. I am trying to learn Russian now :))
Wow I am so glad to find you. So much I can learn from you Alina. By the way, my youngest daughter married an extremely handsome, young Russian man after a long time together so this video is kind of special to me that way.
Thank you so so much for the like you ,"Very Nice Person" ( incredible, amazing young woman)
Love your Frank discussion on the differences between Canada and Russia
But surely the reason why people go to university more in Russia is to delay conscription ( especially men) .I
Did the same in Finland even though I am
Not Finnish but lived there. I would love to see you doing a video on Finnish _russian
Border as it 80 anniversary of the winter war .where people still alive were Finnish then russian.finnnish then russian again.
You could do beautiful at Petersburg to Helsinki by rail.lake lagoda is stunning.
Thanks for your openness and entertainment.
such a biased video, its biased towards russians because there are many russians in many regions in differant level of urbanization and the same goes for canadians...
hey your finnish, you are a snooty city person who is overly polite
her video would be accurate if she was from san marino and lives currently in singapore but not big countries with large population differances
Yes, this was interesting for sure. I teach music at a community college and I have seen students coming to class in PJ’s, but not so much anymore. I also would agree with you, that not everybody needs to attend college or a university. I have recently been trying to communicate with some Russian musicians and although I have made some progress, I do get the feeling that they are slow to trust me.
" Только идиоты улыбаются всем , только идиот всему рад." У нас так считают. Это по поводу постоянной улыбки у американцев.
Loved it.,wanting to tour there very soon.
@@kasya_fet в чём?
