She is from Spain, if you listen to the lyrics it is a story about when Freddie got to finally meet her in person and it was in Barcelona they met. She was a singing idol of Freddie (hence several Queen songs have a lot of opera elements) he wrote this song about him and her meeting in Barcelona and sadly after Freddie's passing this was on a jumbo screen at the opening ceremonies of that Olympics in Barcelona. There is an album already out shortly after this and it hit EPIC sales during and shortly after the Olympics in Barcelona. This song is just second most listened to song in Barcelona other then it's own countries Anthem song and is big in Barcelona, I have been there 4 times in the past 5 years and when this is played all you see is tears and people singing loud and proud to this as if it was their anthem.

Freddie loved opera and really admired Monserrat caballe. Yes this was done for the announcement of the Barcelona olympics, but she and Freddie went on to do other songs and they recorded at least one album together.

Barcelona was the most defiant musical adventure between rock and opera singers..., they was the first in history music to do that!!
What a wonderful, creative, talented and amazing was this beautiful partnership.
They have broken barriers that never has done before. I admire Freddie talent and courage...
I love Monserrat’s spirit because she was so brave too.... against all the warnings from the opera world (Pavarotti called her and say not to do this madness). The gift of Barcelona album is beyond frontiers, is amazing, is a masterpiece which open us a window to the music you will never will have otherwise. This music cross between opera and rock world. Only Freddie could do something like that!!!
Only Monserrat was the bravery to make this!
Try The golden Boy..,, or La Japonaise
    Big hugs from Chile 🇨🇱

You already read the others comments, so I won't answer your question as "**Zenobia**" did a great job answering it :-)
But I have to tell you: I heard "Montsy" singing live and I met her and talked with her. No words can describe how beautiful this woman was, how funny she was, so nice and gently and ... it was amazing and I was blewn away by her smile and extremly loud laughter! I do absolutly understand why Freddie was a fan and friend of her! She is one of the most amazing person I ever met in my life! No words can describe it! I was in love with her from the moment I met her! Never met a woman like here before! Amazing character and woman! Still got her signed poster at my wall ...

Lucky you. :-) I only saw her on TV, and as it was, she was fluent enough in my native language (I only know a few words of Spanish). So I got the "witty, funny, delightful etc" well enough. She had "it" alright, the "je ne sais quoi". :-) No wonder Freddie couldn't help himself. ;-)

Aimless Matt When Montserrat and Freddie first met she asked him to write a song about her homewtown Barcelona and he came up with this wonder. The song was recorded in 1987, it became so popular that it was chosen as the theme for the 1992 Summer Olympics, Freddie had died the year before so they played the video because Montserrat refused to sing this with anyone else. Instead she sang "Amigos para siempre" with Spanish tenor José Carreras. It was Montse who told Freddie he was a baritone and not a tenor as he thought. To this day the Spanish people are grateful to Freddie for this beautiful gift, as a next door neighbor to Spain I am very happy he got to see such a beautiful place.

Montserrat was one of the greatest opera stars, and she was from Barcelona, Spain. Freddie adored her and wanted to perform with her. When it became known that Barcelona was selected to host the 1992 Summer Olympics Freddie wrote this song with Montserrat in mind. They performed this in 1988 in Barcelona in celebration of the announcement. They of course had hoped to sing it together at the Olympics, but Freddie, of course, passed away in 1991. Montserrat passed away in 2018 at the age of 85. She outlived Freddie by 27 years. It became a great friendship and a great collaboration.

Yes, she asked him to do a song with her for the Olympics and he had to tell her that he would be gone by then. The story is that they became very close friends and they did an album. He wrote that song, and if you listen to the notes and words I believe that they recorded and video for the Olympics before he passed. They became very close friends and he spent his time before passing with her.
After I heard the back story and saw this for the first time the words, lighting and everything about it was Freddie's legacy to the music as he was dying. Not sure when but his passing effected her profoundly. She passed away and she had said that the music 🎶 she did with Freddie was the most fulfilling in her life time. I always say a prayer 🙏 to them both thanking them before I say "blast off" and hit play!

Freddie and Montserrat were scheduled to sing at the opening of the 1992 Olympics. Freddie then told Montserrat that he probably wouldn't be there. That he has AIDS and probably won't be around in 1992. She then asked him to write a song, which ended up being a whole album.

Thanks for reacting to this, Matt - this is amazing - not "Queen"-Freddie in collaboration with his opera idol Montserrat Caballe -- he wrote an entire opera for her - and went to the lengths when they met to sing a song that comprised HER part -- they basically fell in love and he unfortunately passed before their songs could be performed at the Barcelona Olympics - so some videos have been made to seem as if they were there together (and well-done) - the song he did to impress "Montsy" as he came to call her was at the time called "Exercises in Free Love" -- it was later incorporated into the entire opera - but some performances with Freddie & Montsy that were incredible included "The Golden Boy" - and my personal favorite: "How Can I Go On" (in which, MC has the biggest smile, and cannot seem to resist lip-synching with Fred) -- I hope you will be interested to view some of these -- here is "How Can I go on" - if you have time and inclinations -- ruclips.net/video/ksNoe8W2jTc/видео.html

You have to know about the history of this little Opera.. they were in playback obviously...This album has born by the love of Freddie Mercury at the Opera music.. He did Barcelona because Monserrat Caballe come from Barcellona and he wanted to dedicate this song to her and her wonderful city.. Afther that, Barcelona won the election as city to hospitate the new olympic games in 1992, and the organisation have decided to use that song as song of presentation of the olympic games.. Freddie Died in November 1991 and never known about what's happened afther (and me too).

'The song was written for Montserrat by Freddie and Mike Moran (the gentleman who is playing the piano). Her name is Montserrat Caballe (Mont-serrat Kah-bay yay). She was nicknamed La Superba by her Italian fans. Freddie had wanted to work with her because, in his opinion, she was the best operatic soprano in the world.
And the most down-to-earth. She was herself, and I think that's what encouraged Freddie open a discussion with her about a possible duet.
There are other vids out on the net that discuss the details of this wondrous project.
There are very few music vids I watch regularly - the one is tied at the top with Disturbed' rendition of Sound of Silence. And they'll probably stay there for as long as I continue to breathe.
    Just sayin'...

This performance was indeed in 1998, for a celebration when Barcelona was given the honor of hosting the 1992 Olympic Games. Freddie passed before the games, in 1991. Caballe past more recently, maybe in 2017. Caballe was one of Freddie's closest and most dear friends. They put out at least one full album together. I believe he spent a lot of downtime in Barcelona and nearby coastal towns, as the are is famous for being tolerant and welcoming to everyone, hence they are a gay mecca. Here in one of her last interviews before her death, she talks about her friend Freddie and his uncreditable talents.
