Great pick. For more underrated Kevin Kline classics, 1993's _Dave_ with Sigourney Weaver - a *perfect* film & one of the best Comedies of the 1990s. Directed by Ivan Reitman ( _Ghostbusters_ ).

Cobb was played by Brian Dennehy. He had a great career in TV and movies. He could play really nice guys as well as rotten scoundrels. Not sure if you recognized the British sheriff played by John Cleese, part of the Monty Python comedy troupe. He was also great in A Fish Called Wanda, which also starred Kevin Kline.

Dennehy was a magnificent actor. I had the pleasure of seeing him live onstage in a Eugene O’Neill “Hughie“. The first film I saw him in was Cocoon, in which he played an alien. He was great there too.

Brian Dennehy was an ex-cop, as I recall, and it was funny the way he almost exclusively played policemen in his career. He was a staple of movies for a long time in my youth.

He interrupted his undergraduate studies at Columbia to serve in the Marines for 5 years. Wasn't a cop. A few of his well-known roles were as a cop, but not a majority of his almost 200 credits.

You're right about the grin. Grew up watching these films and this one is always a favorite. So many fun actors. I'm used to Brian Dennehy (Cobb) being a good guy though so that was a nice change for him back in the day. I think this is also my first exposure to Costner and his energy as the young plucky group member was so fun. But each of the main characters' stories are easy to follow and grab you just enough to keep you entertained and not like you have keep track of too much. So glad you reacted to this AND that you enjoyed it. Westerns are so much fun and look forward to more.

This was a great western that came out when I was 10. Sadly, they did not make another one like this after it came out since westerns were not super popular as you know. It had so many stars (with Kevin Costner, Jeff Goldblum, Danny Glover, John Cleese, Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, and Rosanna Arquette among others) and a fun story. For someone my age, it was my introduction to Costner.

I enjoyed at the time The Quick and The Dead from 1995, but not many others did. It's just ok at best to me now.

There's another great ensemble movie directed by Kasdan that includes Kevin Kline, Jeff Goldblum and a host of other great actors - it's not a Western, but it's a great film - "The Big Chill". If you haven't seen it, you really should. It would also be great if you reacted to it. Fun fact about it, it was supposed to be Kevin Costner's first film, playing a character named, "Alex". His part ended up on the cutting room floor when they went in a bit of a different direction (you'll see what I mean when you see it). Kasdan was impressed with Costner's acting and when he informed him his part was cut, he promised Costner he'd have a part in his next film - "Silverado".

I was 14 when this came out and saw it for the first time about a year later. Great movie all around. After many viewings of this movie, Paden is my favorite character. The journey of his character and the choice he has to make to either do nothing or to do something, even if it may put those he cares about in danger. And that final scene between Paden and Cobb, when they say goodbye to one another, is my favorite. The late Brian Dennehy did a really superb job bringing the character of Cobb to life. And Linda Hunt is an amazing actress. I watched her in many films in the 80's and 90's; I especially loved her as the school principal in Kindergarten Cop with Arnold Schwarzenegger. But Stella, The Midnight Star, will always be my favorite of her many roles.

_Silverado_ is the only movie I ever saw in a theater with my Grandpa. He liked oaters, but until _Pale Rider_ and _Silverado_ were released in the summer of 1985, there hadn’t been a major, well-received western in nine years. Kasdan and his brother wrote this as a homage to the big style slam bang westerns they watched growing up. This was so great watching on the big movie screen when I saw it in 1985. The old fashion western had fallen out of style in Hollywood at this time and I was hoping then it would bring them back. Alas no, there have only been a handful of westerns done in the last 30 to 40 years. The classic westerns were done in the 1940's, 50's and 60's then faded away in the 1970's as tastes changed in America. Oh, well.

I had Silverado recorded on VHS back in the day and I watched it many times. Of course it was one of the only modern Westerns at the time. Eastwood's "Pale Rider" was another that came out in 1985. You see, the 60s and 70s era of Spaghetti Westerns were dead, and several studios tried to bring back the Western genre, but failed, until Silverado and Pale Rider came out. Then, in 1988 and 1990, you had the Young Guns movies. And they were very successful. So you could say that the Western was back. The difference between the Spaghetti Westerns and modern Westerns starting with Silverado was that they actually tried to get the costuming right, as opposed to that "just out of the dry cleaners" look. They looked dirty like they've been out in the desert for awhile.
Now then, on a personal note, I love your look. You kinda remind me of my mother when she was in her 30s. She's been dead now for almost 10 years (71 yo). But your face looks a lot like how my mom would do her makeup. Your hair isn't the same, as mom was wearing the typical 70s beehive, and then 80s big perm style.

Folks mention that this was the revival of the western from the mid 80s. I feel that one of the last classic western was Open Range which came very late. Like Unforgiven was Clint Eastwood's evolved western, Open Range felt like a final throwback to classic western. It was both evolved and classic. With Robert Duvall when he says that line "...it kinda sticks in my craw..." you know you're watching a classic style western. But then when Costner's character start describing what happens in a gunfight you know this is an evolved western.

You're going to LOVE Silverado. It's fantastic. And that's a definite yes on the hat. You look great with it.
You should definitely watch "Wyatt Earp" with Costner in the lead role, a much older man by then. It's also got Dennis Quaid, Michael Madsen, Gene Hackman and Jeff Fahey (Tyree in Silverado,) and was also directed by Lawrence Kasdan.

This is the film that revitalized the American Western. Great choice! "Tombstone" is a great one too!
Jake's "We'll be back!" at the end was supposed to be the clue that this would be the first in a series of films, which is why Hannah was there.

Are you familiar with Kirk Douglas in Lonely are the Brave (1961)? I think I may have only seen it twice on tv back in the late 60s, but it made a big impression on me. It’s a modern Western, appropriately enough about a man and his horse being chased by civilization. It has a great cast including Gena Rowlands, Walter Matthau and George Kennedy. Similar themes were revisited in Sydney Pollack’s The Electric Horseman (1979) with Robert Redford, Jane Fonda and Willie Nelson.

"Quigley Down Under" (1990) is another very underrated Western. Directed by Simon Wincer, who also directed the "Lonesome Dove" (1989) miniseries, it was an early film role for the great Alan Rickman.
Tom Selleck is made for Westerns, "The Sacketts" (1979) miniseries with Sam Elliott (another perfect actor for Westerns) is really good as well.

Absolutely agree on Quigley Down Under. Almost no one I know has ever heard of it, but I watched it dozens of times on cable. Some of Alan Rickman’s best work.

Madison, the year of this is supposed to be 1880. Most of these exteriors were shot at a place called Cook Ranch in New Mexico. You are right many famous lawmen back then had been on the other side of the law at some point. I love westerns. Did you ever watch Lonesome Dove? If not, you need to. Getting to be more and more fun watching your reactions. Only thing better than a smart, attractive woman, is that woman in a western hat lol. Throw in a love for westerns and that should mean great reactions. Oh, another great watch if you can handle the grittier kind of stuff in terms of westerns, you should see the HBO series Deadwood. It ran 3 seasons and the acting was amazing. Brian Dennehy was an accomplished actor, an award winning actor. Long list of TV and movie roles. If you (at this time) had seen Rambo First Blood, Brian played the sheriff who was after Rambo.

Your point about Hanna, I believe is exactly right. Both Emnett and Paden have an idea of coming to her rescue after her husband dies, but they can't agree with her very harsh hard view of the world, and they are not willing to put in that hard work for neither farming nor the relationship. Even though we only see her husband for a very short time, I get the feeling that SHE is in fact the one that was most keen on getting settled and start farming.

I love every part of this movie, it has everything a good Western should! Kevin Kline even kissed his horse. There was a time when I would plug this VHS tape in and watch 20 minutes or so every day. My dad and I have been watching a bunch of Westerns for about the past two years, since the beginning of Covid when I moved in with him so we each wouldn’t be alone during all that. He’s in his 90s so Westerns (and sports) are favorites of his. New subscriber, I really like the way you react to movies. Peace from Ohio …

I just noticed today that you reacted to this favorite of mine 🙂
I've suggested this movie to several reactors and I think you're only the second to do it. Definitely an homage to the classic westerns. My favorite cliche was Emmett suddenly healing when he hears that Augie's been taken 😀
Since you've said you hadn't seen Brian Dennehy before, you may want to check out a few of his other films. He was of the great one.
FX.... Cocoon....First Blood were ones where he was a main character.
...and a couple where he was in a supporting role...
Never Cry Wolf (I think you'd really like)
The Big Year (a rather 'calm' comedy for a movie co-starring Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black).
...just realized... Brian Dennehy played the father for both Jack Black (The Big Year) and Chris Farley (Tommy Boy)😀

Good reaction, and you hit the nail on the head regarding Rosanna Arquette's character, Hannah. She seemed to be poorly written - - introduced as a woman willing to sleep with Paden the very evening after her husband is killed, but scaring both Paden and Emmett off with her determination to find a hard-working second husband to provide for her.
I just discovered your channel this evening. You've won my heart by reacting to my all-time favorite movie, *Jeremiah Johnson.* I'm glad you're focusing to a certain extent on old Westerns.

Not sure if you'll see this, but against my will as a kid I was pretty much reared on Westerns, even performed in a western stunt team for awhile. Anyway, some suggestions for movies, many of which you've probably already seen: The Wild Bunch (1969), High Plains Drifter (1973), The Shootist (1976), Big Jake (1971), Hombre (1967), High Noon (1952, the remake one is trash), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), Five Card Stud (1968), The Searchers (1956), The Bounty Hunter (1954), The Tall T (1956), 7 Men From Now (1956), Ride Lonesome (1959), Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957), Valdez is Coming (1971), Ulzana's Raid (1972), Lawman (1971), The Last Hard Men (1976), Sabata (1969), Hannie Caulder (1971), The Revengers (1972), The Gunfighter (1950), Winchester '73 (1950), A Man Called Sledge (1970), Duel at Diablo (1966), Rio Bravo (1959), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), Stagecoach (1939), Fort Apache (1948), Major Dundee (1965), The Magnificent Seven (1960), Hang 'em High (1968), The Professionals (1966), Breakheart Pass (1975), The Long Riders (1980), Death Rides a Horse (1967), No Name on the Bullet (1959), The Big Gundown (1966), Duck You Sucker (1971), The Mercenary (1968), 100 Rifles (1969), Rio Conchos (1964), The Comancheros (1961), The War Wagon (1967), and, just to wrap this long list up, Garden of Evil (1954).

You mentioned The Magnificent Seven. The original version of that one is Seven Samurai, from 1954. Japanese movie. That one takes place in 1586 Japan, which was a Wild West kind of time and place. And it is seriously good. Basically, you could see it as a Western. After all, it was remade in the US as a Western. And it was filmed on location, not in a studio.
