When I saw the trailer yesterday I was like, "This is the most self indulgent, narcissistic trailer I've ever seen".
Turns out I was right 😂

It's one thing being interested enough to click on an article or a trailer instantly for free for a minute or two. It's another to make plans, travel, spend time and part with hard earned money to go see it.
I love the noise and drama that Coppola's name still brings to the industry. I will be there (in probably my own screening) opening night! 😂😎 Lawrence Fishburne doing the narration is an Easter Egg to him being in Apocalypse Now.
If it was an intentional marketing tactic, it won't help. The general public will have no interest in this movie, and they won't even hear that quotes are fake, and that Lionsgate had to apologize. Most people don't follow movie industry news or read the trades. The internet has other things to focus on. And Megalopolis is going to make no impact on the movie going public. It actually does look visually interesting to me, but I think it's still going to be awful.
I kinda liked how the trailer made Coppola films sound like sophisticated works of art that nobody understood at the time because they are such works of art. Its like it “insists upon itself”

With this and the stories I've heard about Coppola sexually assaulting some of the cast and crew while filming this, it's really not giving the movie a good look.

John, if you have friends at Lionsgate can you convince them to give some love to the 20th anniversary of “Beyond the Sea”? I’d like some special 4K repackaging love to it. Lol. It’s really a great movie that deserves attention and despite everything, Kevin Spacey is amazing in it.

What a weird anti-marketing campaign this has been.
They might be leaning into hoping the stories around this movie get the meme treatment. All the mishaps could absolutely be intentional.

What boggles my mind about this is that there is no alternate universe in which this could have played out well. Mining bad critic quotes to sell your movie is stupid. Mining fake critic quotes by accident is stupider. Mining fake quotes deliberately is imbicilic.
Wrong clip description, John. Ironic. But yeah, this was a horrible idea for a trailer, even if those quotes from his previous films were real. You don't tell people they're going to hate something because no one will understand it.
