    I have the Intel i9 MacBook Pro 16" currently. I really do love the big screen, but the weight has always been a downside for me. It's just so big to whip out in class or wherever I go to video edit. After I heard that the new M1 Max 16" is EVEN HEAVIER, it was a dealbreaker for me. I purchased the M1 Max 14" for portability. If I want a giant screen to watch something, I'll just use my TV or desktop. I sure will still miss the big screen on a laptop, but hey, can't win 'em all in life. Gotta pick your sacrifice. Plus I'm pretty sure if all I am surrounded by is my 14", my eyes will forget what a 16" looks like. As long as my workflow in FCP is better, that's all I care about.

    I've been testing both new sizes and the heft on the 16" is just too much for comfortable day to day use unless you are just using/leaving it in one place most of the time. Even carrying it around at home/couch surfing etc. the bulk in the 16 inch is significantly more noticeable than even my 2016 Intel TB 15"MBP. I would go for the 14 if the battery on the m1 pro wasn't so bad and you're right, if the 14 had the internals of the 13 m1 but with the screen and ports, 14 would be the best one for me. The sound is great on the 14" though and anyone I have opened it up to has been jaw droppingly amazed that a laptop that small could be so clear. Also the cost does play a part when you consider the MacBook Air upgraded to 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. Even without needing the full processor you get better screen, better sound and ports that any home user can use in a body you can fit in the same dimension bag. If you are mostly always working in the same place and only need occasional portability then the 16" may be better if you can live with the fact that it is bigger and heavier than the average laptop. For me the 16 inch are for people that sits at a desk with it. I had the 16 inch last year and kept it for 10 months and sold it. It was just to big and heavy. I previously had the 13 inch and thats the sweet spot. I purchased the 14 inch 64gb of ram, 32 gpu cores and 2 tb ssd and I love it. I like the portability of it and its perfect for me. I mainly use it mobile and if I use it at home Im on my sofa with it on my lap. When I had the 16 inch and I used it on my lap I hated it, its just too damn big and heavy. So I totally disagree with the heading on this RUclips video that says why you should buy the 16 inch MacBook Pro. I dont care the the cost is close, thats not the point. Its the feel and how I use it. So I dont care about the benefits that he states, if I dont like the way it feels and carrying it around why get it. And hes says it, its a perfect workstation, yeah if you dont move it around the yeah its perfect for you. But the 14 inch is the sweet spot with basically the same performance.

For a desktop computer is great, but portability and confort while using in your lap, couch, coffe table , carrying and a long etc made me decide to go for 14” display still great for watching movies, sound still great enough, powerful, battery is still also good enough, and is light and confortable to use as a laptop, not a desktop computer.

The size and weight can be a bit of a challenge when using it on my lap, but it never gets hot, just warm at the most. I stopped buying MacBooks when Apple discontinued the 17" boat anchors, and switched to iMac 5Ks for the better performance and greater screen real estate, and didn't buy a MacBook again until 2019 when the 16" came out - so I'm obvious biased towards larger screen laptops.

    16 inch silver M1 Max chip. 1 TB SSD 32 gigs of ram. If you’re stuck whether or not you should get 14 or 16, get the 16 if you can afford it. Especially if you’re just using it as a desktop. For portability, I’ll throw it in my backpack and it’s perfect. When people complain about the weight they are weaklings and don’t deserve a 16 inch. It’s really not heavy at all.

      Got the 16 it replaces my old 15 rmbp 2012 which I think was the inspiration for this model as the dimensions are near identical and the keyboard and ports are a return to what it had that was stripped away in the 2016 to 2019 designs.
      Fits in my knapsack laptop slot.
      Yes it weighs more but don't need to carry out long distances and the great battery life means don't need to carry extra dongles and charger if need to go out with it.
      Unlike others I don't have a docking station with bigger monitor setup so this will be my desktop/laptop device hence the bigger screen.
      If it was going to be docked to a monitor all day, then the 14 would make sense as the screen, speaker and battery benefits would not exist. But to me the display is main selling point of this device and the soon to be released new air model would likely be a better but and nearly as powerful as the 14 but with better battery and no fans. So would rather get that and dock it and have a great travel device. If it is docked the extra ports are irrelevant. The great screen is irrelevant and all your are buying is a better cpu. Might as well just get a new mini much less when released

    Bigger was always better until they finally beefed up the 14 inch. Having owned a 15inch 2018 MBP, I returned it after 1 week. It was simply too cumbersome to carry around and whip out in a moment’s notice. For me the whole point of Laptop is portability and it’s impossible to argue that the 16inch is portable compared to the 14inch.
    Minus the new overclocking fan feature the performance you’ll get from the 14inch is just perfect for most uses and if you want a real “work station” build a proper PC workstation, that’s what I’ve got.
    Also own an amazing USB C monitor setup with power to provide the MBP 14 with fast charge and video/audio in one cable in clamshell mode. That’s not possible on the 16inch (due to the USB C 96w limit). Another consideration for the 14inch. My specs are M1 Max 24gpu, 64gb Ram 1tb.

      Do you notice any overheating issues, or extra battery drain with the M1 Max in the 14 inch?

    • @allsomatt
      @allsomatt 2 года назад +1

      @@Logalactic I haven't noticed any such issues with overheating, I'm using mine in a real-world scenario too not studio induced conditions like RUclips reviewers. I've managed to get in some long editing sessions and the battery hasn't ever caused me any problems.
      The portability is simply fantastic, however I would recommend having extended use of the Max Model that for the majority 32gb M1 Pro would absolutely be enough.

      @Logalactic 2 года назад

      @@allsomatt Thanks for your answer, that is helpful.
      I am still torn between the 14 and the 16, but I am leaning towards portability. I do a lot of coding and graphic design, so screen size is important, but the 14 inch just looks more durable and compact with the same specs.

    • @allsomatt
      @allsomatt 2 года назад +1

      @@Logalactic Your best bet is going to a Store (if you have one that's reachable) and physically seeing them with your own eyes. The 14 should be more durable yes from a structural point of view, especially the lid as there's less width. Don't let be the deciding factor.
      Also I do use a monitor when I'm at home working. It's hooked upto the Mac from a Single USB C thunderbolt cable, meaning I get audio, video and full 96w fast charge. You can't fast charge the 16inch Mac over USB-C btw only the 14inch can do this. I see it as the best of both worlds when at home I've got a desktop setup if needed or I can unplug and work with the laptop on the sofa. Then when I head out I've got a super portable lightweight powerhouse for in the coffee shop or even on the train or plane.
      I always remember my 15inch never felt like a portable nimble device. Always kinda in the way. I've been running Rhino 3D and several graphic apps too with no issues, the screen size really hasn't stopped me.

    I went for the 16in M1 Max this year for the first time. After always owning the smaller 13 inch model and I am very happy with my decision. The added real estate is indeed valuable and the speakers seem to be slightly better on the 16 in too.

      I am in Canada and that is not an apples to apples comparison (pun intended)
      The base 14 is 512gb 8/14 core. If you asked it to 1tb 10/16 like base 16 difference is 250 and 110 more for the Apple Care ( think difference would have only been 50. Makes me think the require costs of that bigger screen might be more)

A 12V is much lighter and easier to use and good for 95% of the things I need a drill for. But yes, I'm looking forward to my 16in screen and better cooling ability.... as soon as it arrives :)
