There's enough metal in this song to rebuild the death star
Well that's the comment of the day for me, so true !
So fucking true
And to blow up a planet!
in a way it transcends metal
This album is the high water mark of metal for me. There was good metal before and after, but nothing will ever come close. Even now, decades later, ever time I hear it it I'm like, "Fuck me with a chainsaw that's heavy!"
Fun fact: in the game Fallout 3, in one of the underground levels there is a computer terminal and if you switch it on, lyrics from this song appear on the screen as part of an email.
And Fear Factory.
@@josephbrowne3533 Off memory, I think Raymond had a part in the musical production in fallout3... I could be wrong though.
@P Jeffery Gene Hoglan was in FF for a while too
@@josephbrowne3533 the email is also signed B Bell
@@lurch89645 Yup, theirs so many metal references in fallout 3. I can't remember all of emails from the music vault, wasn't the overseer someone of note?
this has not aged, not even a minute
This was the last official sighting of Devin's hairline
Hands down one of the top 5 heaviest songs of the 90s. Absolutely CRUSHING
My neighbors often listen to this. And then they always start banging on my door with enthusiasm.
If your first Devin song is Spirits Will Collide and you're suddenly here, KEEP GOING.
Song: detox
Music: 💪🏿
Lyrics: 🥺
It's a kickass adrenaline-pumping song but lyrically it sounds like a cry for help.
In any case it's an industrial-thrash metal masterpiece. A fucking thrashterpiece.
i mean, this whole album was a cry for help i think. a genius one, but still. a lot of music is
A Fucking Thrashterpiece ! 💯
Much like NIN's masterpiece, it's full of anger and hostility but is also desperate and pained.
It's one of the most beautiful lyrics about alienation and the feeling of being misplaced in unrelatable crowds! ❤
It’s true as I’m listening I’m currently on the toilet severely constipated
I met Dev last week after his Glasgow gig, he spent 2 hours signing and talking to fans... nicest guy in rock and a fucking genius to boot :)
Hello from 2020
Rock??
Love your stuff man keep on keeping on AKA don't stop
@@magistermilitum1206Metal is Rock
Only Strapping Young Lad’s “Detox” is an addiction itself.
Listening to Strapping young lad is like standing in front of a jet engine. The energy is insane. I understand why Devin wanted to move on. I wouldn’t be able to stay at the level needed for music like this yeesh.
Yeah, topping the production on Alien would have probably been impossible.
He said City was the album he wanted to end with, he stopped taking his anti psychotics while making it
The dudes bi polar, let the creativity flow from both of him. But I guess it has looking at what he’s done now
@@rubymeaddle City was when he was diagnosed. He wasn't on psych meds back then because they weren't prescribed to him yet. After the main touring cycle for City, he committed himself to a psych ward.
That was exactly the feeling of a SYL live show. Standing before a storm front. It was insane. Never had the same live experience again.
City is one of the best albums to come out of the 90s, period.
Sentient Viscera one of the best metal albums ever made. It’s insanity siphoned into music. Utter perfection imo. Nothing weak on the album.
@@tylerjacobson8012 I concur. Hello from England.
So true, I forgot how brutal it is. I had noisy neighbours so I put this album on repeat, maxed the volume and put the speakers against the wall, fucked off out. Who wins?
Hell yeah and I'm not even a metalhead .Im more into UK Punk and Krautrock.
City and Demanufacture
I never knew about Strapping Young Lad until watching a long interview with Gene Hoglan that he did shortly after joining Fear Factory. Funny thing is, I knew who Devin Townsend was, and I loved his DTP and DT bands, but my dumb ass never knew that he was the founder of SYL. Being a fan of Dethklok, and of Gene in general and everything that he does, this interview that he did, he introduced me to a few projects that he was part of that I never knew about. It was that interview where he mentioned, that out of all of the bands that he has had the honor to be a part of, his favorite band to perform with was Strapping Young Lad.
He also stated, that if Strapping Young Lad ever wanted to play again and tour, he would drop everything that he was doing just to play with them again. That is when I was introduced to SYL, and I am glad that I was, cause this entire band is bad ass. From the lyrics, to the entire structure of their songs and how well written every piece is, this band was a well done piece of art. How I never knew about them for all of these years, leaves me baffled. After listening to some of their songs, I went out and bought all 4 albums. City, Alien and The New Black are my 3 favorite albums. Each album has it's own forte.
Found SYL at my worst moments, truly gods gift
Gene "Holy Shit" Hoglan...a God on the skins
Gene "The Machine"!
@@aliceautomated Here comes the Atomic Clock
a beast !!!!
sus
While this song is technically about an addiction, it is a brutally truthful expression of any deep regret. I have a lot of that which is why this song always touched my soul.
This song was on a metal hammer freebie in 97. I bought the album CITY and was totally blown away. In my mind one of the best heavy metal albums of all time.
DUUUDE! I was 14 ! That Metal Hammer CD was on constantly, it was my first introduction to Devvy and Strapping, Fucking love this band, wish I'd seen them live!
I found it on triple J thirteen three hours of power in 98 I'm thinkin. Soooo dope.
Edit: just checked, it was 97. I guess they gave the rights to this song for free to anyone.
This is an insane masterpiece not for everyone, Devin is a fucking genius. Can't tell how many times this music helped me overcome various shit in life
Only the very first second of this 5 min 39 song is calm 🤣
4:34 HUH! And Devin catches the guitar neck. Love that detail.
this song HAS to be on every workout playlist ever, it's just relentless energy with no hesitations.
I listen to the whole album when working out, it’s perfect
I listen to this song every time I lift weights. The "Hey! Come on!" refrain gets my blood pumping like no other.
Devin is a champion in person too. Bloody humble guy! Hoglan absolutely kills on this song too
I saw Dev last night at an acoustic gig in Bournemouth, and he actually played an acoustic version of this song. He's a fucking mental genius.
Incredible industrial thrash metal. I remember the first time I listened to "City" back in 1997 and being totally overwhelmed by it. The angry vocals, the crunchy guitars, the catchy bass, and especially the thundering drums blew me away. It literally sounded like the end of the world. "Detox" is a superb song. It's visceral and brutal, but also quite melodic in its way. Top notch singing by Devin Townsend. I love his screaming. Interestingly enough, "City" was recorded at Steve Vai's studio.
I’m normally not a big metal guy, but there’s something about this song that I absolutely love.
For me its heavy as all balls and has a euphoric feeling to it yet. That and the master Devin Townsend and Gene Hoglan on drums helps im sure lol
Gene Hoglan's drumming on this whole album is brilliant!!!
City and Chaosphere two of the heaviest albums ever made! Both bands gave me some of the best concert experiences of my life! Miss those days ;(
yeah, and Concatenacion as first destroy tha earholes
It's good to see that even in the 90's, Devin was concerned for people's health and was giving diet tips.
"No gouda, round people..."
You goof Lmfao
Oh shit hahahahahahahaha
it's literally called detox lol
oh you bastard, i'm never gonna be able to hear it properly now
I thought he said "Buddha" forever, even though it made no sense.
2:55 - 3:56
so heavy,90's,scacey,energized,happy,dark,machinery part that gives you a so big smile and energy that only uncle Devin knows how to combine aaaall these stuff.....he's the genius of everything!!!!
Sure
My god, this is just something else what you here these days. Multi talents like Devin are undervalued these days. 10/10 This is Perfection ❤
The definition of "underrated" in the dictionary should be changed to "Strapping Young Lad".
Damn straight! It's not just metal, it's based on true emotion, spilled in your face1
Holy effing omfg YES!
They would be my thesaurus along with Nevermore!
@@randysorensen7703 yes, so true...
I love Nevermore's endeavors. Loomis is playing for another band now, too, and I just can't remember at the moment. Damn faulty circuits.
@@testrabbit Loomis is in Arch Enemy wasting away.
I actually vividly the day I first heard this song when I was about 14, it felt like this monstrous revelation of huge sound was being transmitted from another universe into my ears. I absolutely fell in love.
Love?
This is the masterpiece that hooked me on SYL. Devin is a genius 🤘💀🤘
Dear Canada, more like this please. Signed: America
Signed: The World, THE WORLD!!!
indeed. we need more devs in this world
Yeah well Gene Hoglan is Texan. Dallas native!
Vinny Paul is great, Gene Hoglan is one of the greatest Metal drummers of all time, if not THE greatest as he's proved it with so many bands.
Trashed have you seen his interview about individual thought patterns he had just gotten serious about drumming and he was following Reinert and was amazing. He is so humble and caring!

My response: "Play that stupid piece of shit!".
Digging this tune
This is the song that got me into SYL.
Me too... Best song to jam to when on a long trip

For me it was "wrong side" found in a "metal masters" compilation
for me SYL is the song that got me into SYL
Yolanda maria piotrowicz same here epic fucking song
This is one of my all time favorites!!!! What a song !!!! That riff is so tight. What a band !!!!!! One of the best metal bands ever!
HOW DID I GET HERE TONIGHT?
this song got me into this band.heavy, with emotion and sheer insanity.
Beautiful song...always touch my soul.
I remember the first time I heard this song. I listened to this album while running. When this track came on, I just had to start hauling ass and not stop until it was over. Probably haven't run that fast for 5:40 straight since then.
Same thing happened to me at the gym, broke a personal record lol
I’m in love with Gene Hoglan 😍
Best drummer I have ever heard live!
I will never get over this song. "I was born absolutely numb!"
“Far Beyond Metal” was the SYL song that got me into them. “Detox” is what made me love them!
Today marks 20 years of my face being melted by this.
Long may it continue. \m/
0:47 "I've got a peeeeniiis"
Ahahhaha
lolololol
rofl
"I've got a penis
With the wrong pee hole
And I can't control my farts"
...
Shit, now I can't enjoy that song seriously anymore
Emperor Tomato Ketchup goddamnit can't unhear now
the legend says that the drummer has calves the size of an adult elephant leg...
Fear Factory and Strapping are probably my all time fav bands, I don't know why but I always combine these two.
In the same boat mate. Detox and Zero Signal....
Devy has stated he went to a fear factory concert and was so inspired that he wanted to make that style of music but with his own twist on it
@@stormin_norman1486Never knew that. SYL is my all time favourite band. Still to this day I cannot chose between City and Alien.
Industrial metal, very mecanical sound, samples, similar atmosphere.
The drummer and bassist of SYL ended up in FF
This song describes what i go through everytime i get dragged out to a public event or nightclub. Social anxiety is a bitch. Love you Devy!
Andre Vanderkuur Drink and drugs cures social anxiety my friend....
The song is literally about how drink and drugs worsen social anxiety.
It can be rough at times but its worth it in the long run, the good outweighs the bad!
This song is relatively simple, but just perfectly constructed, one of the best metal songs I've heard in a while! Can't get enough
Best song to listen to before visiting my Gran! love u Gran!
i've spent so long thinking he's shouting "hey hello" and i was like this is a weirdly aggressive way to say hi to someone.
Devy with almost a full head of hair. Woah.
Almost lmao
Don’t diss the skullet!
It's called the Skullet.
They're chanting "Hey, you Mo" (short for moron), according to Devin's blog years ago.
I've always thought it was Come On instead of You Mo
i heard break your bone :D
I always thought it was hey you know
@@unorthodox_h7115 According to the lyrics, they sing "Hey, get low!"

HOW COULD YOU NOT LIKE THIS SONG!!!???
You are 100 percent right
This album and the next two are great.

Because bob segar exist
Not my kind of bpm (no offense, but I like it faster, above 500 bpm, like splittercore and exterior exterior extratone)
but hey, if you like it, I have no problem with that, have a good day
Born too late to see these guys live, born too early to see the inevitable resurgence of thrash
Heard this song now for first time after 24 fucking years. In 1997 my brother recorded it on MC from radio from some metal chart show and we was listening to it with mouth wide opened. He was strapping young lad but he died that same year and the MC was lost somewhere. Strange memories...
Best shout along bit ever:
"This is only HIGH SCHOOL BULLSHIT!!"
0:47 "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVVVEEEE GGGOOTT AA PEEENIIIISSSSSS"
I'll never hear this part of the song the same way again.
A band I'd heard of over the years but never listened to until just now.I like it.
Dat time signature change... 🤤
I've been a big fan of thrash for a couple of years, and have explored even the more obscure stuff like Carcass and Annihilator (hardly obscure, I know).... but how have I not heard of these guys!??
Ladies and Gentlemen: Devin "Musical Genius" Townsend!!!
the mad scientist of metal!
+Joshua Atherton If they ever do a Back to the Future remake casting Devy as Dr. Emmett Brown is a no brainer.
Man when i was a teen i spent hours, hours in the cibercafe just to wacth Devin Townsends songs, videos :)
Relatable lyrics.
0:47 I'VE GOT A PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENISSSSSSS!!!
I'm just glad dev is playing some songs again
Remember going to see these guys about 8 years ago in Glasgow. Devon came on and jammed a few tracks with Zimmers Hole, then he did a full set with the Devon Townsend Band and then he came on a third time and did the SYL set, Guy has such a phenominal amount of energy. Plus I met my wife at that show. It was an awesome night all round.
Last seen on MTV 20 years ago. I forgot the Name and the title. Now i found it and i am very happy :-D
I remember going to SYL shows here in Vancouver. Townsend would constantly insult the audience between songs. It was hilarious.
This is a real throwback to when Townsend had hair.
...I have listened to thousands of Metal albums/songs over the past decades and I still think the riff from 2:54 to 3:56 is one of, if not THE greatest riff ever written/composed.
That intro riff, omg.
Even Magneto can´t handle this amount of Metal
Probably the best thing musically to come out of Canada.
the best thing out of Canada "period".
Rush...?
Detatipaced
Rush WAS the best thing out of Canada....
Detatipaced Todd Pierson I was honestly waiting for someone to mention Rush. They are indeed legendary, but Strapping is my favorite. I will say that I do like to listen to Rush every now and then. =)
How about Celine Dion? No? Ok...
It's a master piece of beauty
This is the sound of the heaviest matter in the entire universe.
No, that's Gojira
Te recomiendo "MASSACRA" de alemania...
*Gojira would like to know your location*
Of course it is. Was just using this expression to describe this song, which fits so well..you know, cuz it's heavy as a really heavy thing.
@@TinkerToneworks that's ironic, because Gojira wouldn't be anything without SYL's influence
Something happens at 4:34 I don’t know what but it’s absolutely killer 🤘 love it
This song brings out the primal side of me. I have never had so much adrenaline created from any song, ever. Fucking. Awesome.
Meshuggah chaosphere? Needs to be remixed as much as dev physicist does.
This song changed my life 20 years ago. So little today can compare.
One of those special songs that perfectly sums up Metal.
the first song i ever heard of them was this one when it came out.... it was on mtv metal days back then..today i still absolutely love it...its a serious adrenaline pumping song that takes you far off !!!
0:30 AYY LMAO, AYY LMAO, AYY LMAO
im aware of what it say's, it just sounds like ayy lmao

at 2:28 I always hear, 'No Gouda, round people.'
you are like my favorite person
😂
Very, very good works! Awesome! OK! Thank you boys! 🇨🇿⚒️🪓
the man the myth the Devin!
How can you say that, Devin is one of those rare artists where every song he makes is unique but nearly every track on his CDS are gold. If you can't listen to them, don't say you like most music, say you like shit music.
I remember staying up for the hour of power on jjj to tape this onto cassett and trying to catch it on TV to record on vhs...... Dam I feel old now.
I remember rage on channel 2 after midnight, used to feature touring bands. I would wait and see if they were metal and then spend hours recording
Got it in a compilation CD from MetalHammer 25 years ago. It blew my mind then, and still it does every single time.
2:55-3:57
Is quite easily one of the finest moments from the Strapping Young Lad Discography.
Best thing to ever come out of Canada. Gene I know you're American but you are a fucking legend.
Annihilator?
+Raúl Pérez ahh they're good but imo not my favourite out of Canada.
+Raúl Pérez Nomeansno! The Great Granddads of progressive punk rock. Even Devin loves them.
+jerhardt666 ya that's my opinion though. Just like you have your own.
jerhardt666 Fuckin Annihilator!
They don't make 'em like SYL anymore
+ElektrobanK that's for sure... Been trying to find a band like them for years, and it's impossible. SYL is it's own species.
+Noa Noodles you are so so soooo right!!!! The only thing that remotely compares to this is ministry
As angry and as aggressive? Probably. Difference is that no video channel or label would pick them up now.
The only band that reminds of SYL is Fear Factory. I wouldn't be surprised if SYL got some of their sound from them.
+Jeffrey Neilan Devin said in an interview that one album that he was inspired by was FF's Soul of a New Machine
Just as amazing as ever even after 20 years
Of all of the shows I've been to, the mosh pit at a strapping young lad show was by far the most intense. That was a straight up fight and I enjoyed every second of it.
