Very reliable POE switch. I know you said you didn't really want to do cable management - but I can't help it :) Couple of options - 1. Switch in the area where you have your printer. It can be mounted against one of the sides, so it doesn't hit the lid of the scanner if you want to open it. Cables can be fed round the back, a little clip would hold it in place. 2. Place it on the shelf where you have your power distribution and move the power distribution to the back. If you don't fancy crimping on a new RJ45, you can use keystone with a lid on it (then you just have to cut the cables to length, push down the plastic lid to make the connection) and use a small patch lead to the switch. Benefit of this, is that your master feed can be considered more or less like structured wiring, and you can switch out whatever you have in the room. The ToughSwitch PRO runs pretty warm, but has no fans and has been rock solid. I upgraded from the old style APs to the AP AC PRO series, currently it is powering 5 of those, great piece of kit. Thanks for making your videos, I don't run servers at my home these days, but still have a fair network stack :)
You most likely burned a pair of resistors in the devices you plugged in to the 24V ports: There are usually a pair (4 in the case of 1000base-t) of 75 ohm resistors from the center taps of the ethernet isolation transformers to a common point, the purpose of which is to absorb common mode noise. The good news is that it works without them, the transformer always survives, the PHY usually survives, and the resistors burn quickly (1.9W in the 125mW or 250mW resistors). But, not quickly enough that you don't get to enjoy the smell of burnt FR4 laminate. Yay for network related videos.
Pretty cool switch. ... perhaps Sascha should had reset the switch before sending it out? You were most likely going to plug the network cable into the first port so shipping with a live port was stupid.
Hi Mike C To easy to be clever afterwards,, I do not think I would have thought of it. I got a new set up for my internet,, as the wifi in my router died. No problem,, it was sooooo old anyway. Thank you for watching! :-)
How did you find the gen 1 UAP-AC long term? These are now EOL and as such are coming up really cheap for a high quality AC access point. In a home environment where you just want to ‘set and forget’ are these any good?
Not really the Toughswitch is not the same as the Edgeswitch Series. Toughswitch is a Layer3 Switch with a limited static routes design where as Edgeswitches are Layer2 devices. Essentially Edgeswitches are the same thing as the Unifi Series (they are managed by Ubiquiti Network Management Tool instead of the Ubiquiti Unifi Controller). This is where Switches like the US-48 and US-16 XG got their RJ45 Console Port from...
Hi tmkoeln Thank You very much! They have still called it a Edgeswitch : www.ubnt.com/products/#default It is the very last switch... Thank you for watching! :-)
Maybe UBNT decided to go with slightly downgrading it firmware wise and keeping it in the Edgeswitch portfolio. Because just the other week I was doing some research on a cheaper option from UBNT and a discusion wheter or not going with the Edgeswitches, the Unifi US-8 POE or Toughswitch POE Came up (from the ubnt forums). The Topic spoke about the hazzles of the Toughswitches and the uselessness of a limited static routing on L3... The community called the Toughswitch an unwanted child...
Hi johns touchpad I would expect that it can,,, but if I LAG four ports to the NAS,, then I need 4 ports to my PC,, then the switch if full,, then I might as well just cable all four ports directly from SW to PC,, to ports maybe.. Thank you for watching! :-)
Hi Pure - Ski Thank You very much! it's a real problem,, I do want to show when people want to send me awesome stuff,,,, But I would had my viewers to be jealous,,, :-/ It's a ballances I expect,, Thank you for watching! :-)

Hi Morton, Nice, stuff you got from Shacha , seems like a generous guy .I like that Ubiquiti switch and AP. I think i'll give Shacha my address to. :) Does he sell second hand stuff on Ebay or online someware? Would love to buy some of that. Nice vid as always ,Morty.
Hi Jacksat Thank You very much! Yes almost to many toys at ones!! :-) I do really not know why Sascha wanted to send all this awesome stuff to me,, but I am not complaining. Have no idea, if he sells stuff. Thank you for watching! :-)
Hmmm..... Is the PoE switch here "passive", meaning always supplying power? "Power over Ethernet is injected onto the cable at a voltage between 44 and 57 volts DC, and typically 48 volts is used. This relatively high voltage allows efficient power transfer along the cable, while still being low enough to be regarded as safe. This voltage is safe for users, but it can still damage equipment that has not been designed to receive POE. Therefore, before a POE switch or midspan (known as a PSE, for power sourcing equipment) can enable power to a connected IP camera or other equipment (known as a PD, for powered device), it must perform a signature detection process." www.veracityglobal.com/resources/articles-and-white-papers/poe-explained-part-2.aspx
Hi mrlithium69 Thank You very much! I did not have the IP or PSW for the used switch,, so the quick easy way was just to factory default it. Thank you for watching! :-)
Hi colydeane Thank You very much! all was okay,, but is was a close call,, that router is under my bed,, it could have started a fire :-( Thank you for watching! :-)
Sascha is a very generous person sending you the switch. This particular device retails around $300. Nice one !!

no, it is managed, and he could shut off or on the power on just 1 port through the software if he wants.
