  • How you can utilize contactors as automatic transfer switch between grid and solar
    -- More information below! --
    By using an ATS or changeover switch allows you to switch between solar and grid.
    It can be done via relays or even manual contactors

    I have 3 phases from the grid, many times when there are storms only one phase goes out, the other two work. I have the idea of putting a separate relay for each phase, and in the event of a failure, two phases are powered from the grid, and one phase from battery solar power. what do you think DIY Tech & Repairs ?

    I bought a three phase drum switch, not one pictured, from China. I was to use it for switching PV panels. Four independent switches if the jumpers are removed, ON/OFF/ON. But, the switches make before the other ones break causing a momentary short and starting an arc that didn't stop. Apparently all just to save a little plastic on the cam.

    Something i don't understand. At first you showed that pressing one contactor would not allow the other, but once you connected it to the switches you were able to press one and turn the other off. When you press the button does it first open/close the switches on the side to release the other contactor before this one engages?

    Great video, one question: I believe the same thing could be done *without* having to buy a contactor with AUX ports shown here. As long as the contactors use opposite circuits (one Normally Open (NO), one Normally Closed (NC)). This way, the charge of one closes/opens the other. Would you agree?

    • @DIYTechRepairs
      @DIYTechRepairs  6 лет назад

      No and yes. depends on the contactor of course.

    • @InspiredScience
      @InspiredScience 6 лет назад

      Thank you for the reply.
      Your "No and yes" answer is odd because I'm referring to fundamental contactors, nothing more. *The feature enabling this is your "lockout" mechanism, not the type of contactor.*
      Providing they are only used in the NO+NC combination, and wired so that the current from one causes the other to do the opposite (one has to open when the other closes), this should be all that matters, correct?

    • @SuziRider5D
      @SuziRider5D 2 года назад

      That is then a Manual transfer switch. This is automatic as the grid power goes off and comes back on again, it switches 100% to the other system. They Energy companies cannot have people's solar panels or large batteries electrifying the local powerlines they are working on.

    • @InspiredScience
      @InspiredScience 2 года назад

      @@SuziRider5D - What I've explained is an ATS, a fully automatic transfer switch. You may have misunderstood.
      One contactor is NO (NOT allowing current when unpowered). One contactor is NC (allowing current when unpowered).
      It works by using both contactors in opposing fashion, combined with the physical lockout mentioned in the video.

      @@DIYTechRepairs Interesting and hopeful. Judging from the Biltema multimeter, this is a 50Hz area which would put this in the sweetspot zone as far as timing is concerned. I'm just concerned that the two different phases have a chance to overlap, but with 10-20ms delay that should not be an issue. I guess I'll try to hook it up and find out for myself. • @wimpie007
      @wimpie007 7 лет назад

      Yeah, sorry, I was a bit tired.
      Comparing it to an offline UPS explains it for me. At the exact moment when it switches between the sources, there is 0 Volt going to the load, so you can't use this circuit to power your computer.

    • @DIYTechRepairs
      @DIYTechRepairs  7 лет назад

      wimpie007 of course you can power computer with it. As i said same principle as offline ups. And the computer runs on dc load with big caps so it will have time. Not sure how long but the 10ms it takes to switch is ok. Its the same as Most inverters have like both mine. Will be in next video :) analog equipment like some fluorescent lights will complain though. Note that its not ssr but relay so it will switch directly.

    Daniel If I want to manually transfer from Grid to Solar and vise versa will I loose power in the house during the transfer or is it seemless? I need to setup a system that I can switch to Battery every night but I need it to be a transparent switch.

      IF the switch is fast enough its fine. Just make sure that the grid and inverter is synced or you Will generate a Spike

    can you make a video whats inside those mechanical interlocks? i am planning to make one.. T_T i cant bought it anywhere here at my place... but i do know how to fabricate..

      I dont think its rellevant to look at that If you ask me. For proper isolation you need approved gear so head for that. The mechanical interlock is just e lever that makes sure only one can engate at a time.

    Make that as full battery priority.....so when battery's goes up to 55v goes on inverter mode without utility and when is lower than 48v goes back to utility without charging the battery with utility... and with possibility to charge the battery with solar.... 👍
    I use XH-M602 circuit with small modification.... originally is equipped with relay that have only NO as normaly open contact... 👍 I have replaced that relay with one that has NO and NC normaly closed contact to use both contact's ....
    So that board give the command what will I use utility or solar depending on state of battery .....👍
    What you think about that solution.....?

      Hi Bostjan, I also use contactor to switch between grid and PV. My contactor is 2 NO and 2 NC. The battery voltage determines whether I am on the grid or on solar. I use a Morningstar relay driver with 4 ports, all individually programmed with a max and min voltage setting. thus my 3 sets of panels: 2 off 2.5 kW and one off 1 kW, all with Enphase micro inverters. The ports on the relay driver switches on and off the sets as required determined by the 48 volt battery bank. Cheers

      Hello
      Actually I was using this setup to switch on/off electric heater because I have li-ion battery and are very quickly full so what to doo with all electricity when are battery full and I have no load to use all that electricity switching to the heater that heat my 200l tank for shower.....

      Also a second heater to support our heating system (I use heat pump for heating) heater 1.5kw x 2 would be installed before the heat pump....

    can you explain how to automatically turn on generator. I am wondering to apply this system in the residence.

      First of all your generator need to be able to work with remote-start. If thats possible then its just a matter of timer and to get it to engage. I dont have any generator to test or build this up so cant help much today. I have not done this myself but read alot about it and there is plenty of other that have done it :)

    Hi I've manage to do it but I'm facing an issue. When main is off, the generator contactor engage normally, but when main is back online, the contactor tries to engage but it's like it's overlapping. And makes that sounds like it's trying hard to engage papapapapapapa. Can you help please? Thank you.

    • @DIYTechRepairs
      @DIYTechRepairs  6 лет назад +1

      Thats because you hooked it up wrong. Either it drops the contact because you hooked up the main through the other side so it looses contact or you have the mechanical lock engaged. You need to read up on the connection and how those works. Beware of that hooking ATS up can be lethal and can cause huge issues if not done properly.

  • @kaitsa111

    You dont need control system to control which one is the first one(9:50). You connect your both main power wires straight to one connector, not one wire thru other contactors relay.
