- For this "YOYOKA Drum Course", I met drummer BOBO in person a few days before I was to perform with MIYAVI at Hibiya Music Festival, and he taught me how to play!
Because it was a quick shoot, we couldn't rent a big studio, and the recording was only on my iPhone (my apologies to BOBO). But we had a lot of fun and learned a lot from him, so please check it out.

🥁Drummer Yoyoka’s BIOGRAPHY🥁
Born in October 2009, YOYOKA started playing drums at the age of two, played live at four, and formed her family band "Kaneaiyoyoka" at five. When she was six years old, she released her first CD while in kindergarten.
In addition to drums, YOYOKA sings, plays the piano, and is a songwriter. In 2018, at the age of eight, she became the youngest weekly champion in the under-18 category of the international female drummer contest "Hit Like A Girl". Her application video, a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Good Times Bad Times" was featured on NBC, NPR, in Rolling Stone Magazine and in Billboard and then spread all over the world. Her drumming prowess has been praised by music legends such as Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), Ian Paice( Deep Purple), Roger Taylor(Queen), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Sheryl Crow, Gene Simmons and Eric Singer (KISS), Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Hayley Williams (Paramore), Sass Jordan, Tony Royster Jr., Brad Wilk (Rage Against the Machine), Derrick McKenzie (Jamiroquai) and many more.
In 2018, at the age of eight, YOYOKA appeared in Japan's famous rock festival "RISING SUN ROCK FESTIVAL in EZO" as the youngest performer ever. The following year, she made a surprise appearance Fall Out Boy’s stage at Summer Sonic Tokyo 2019 in front of an 20,000 audience. Later that year, she was invited to Cyndi Lauper’s show at Tokyo Orchard Hall as the guest drummer for two songs on the last day of her Japan tour.
YOYOKA is endorsed by world-class brands such as Nike, Moncler, and UNIQLO. In 2018, she shot a Nike campaign in Thailand, followed by a Moncler campaign shoot in New York in 2019. She became the face of Moncler alongside actor Will Smith. Both campaigns were launched worldwide and were very well-received.
Already at the age of eight, YOYOKA became the youngest drummer ever to sign an endorsement contracts with drum makers Pearl and VIC FIRTH. Since then, she has also signed with Zildjian, CYMPAD and DW.
YOYOKA’s attention from the world does not stop. In January and May 2018, YOYOKA was invited to LA twice to make an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, one of the most popular show in the United States, where she was praised by Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters who made a shoutout to her on the show. She also impressed the audience with a successful show at the legendary live house "Whisky A Go Go".
In April 2019, YOYOKA was selected as Newsweek's "100 Japanese People Respected by the World" and "World's TOP500 drummers” by Drummer World, both the youngest in history.
In 2020, Pearl showcased her talent at the 2020 NAMM show in Anaheim, the world’s largest musical instruments trade show. She was the youngest female and only Japanese drummer ever to appear.
The impact of YOYOKA continues to spread worldwide. Her favorite drummers are John Henry Bonham, Chris Coleman, Nate Smith, Chad Smith and Dave Grohl. Her dream is to travel and play sessions with people all over the world.

8:36-9:21 In case anyone wonder, she's referring to BOBO's unique linear drumming style which can be described as propulsive, rudimentary, and consistent but can also be groovy and very syncopated at a time. Anyone ever listened to his works with many Japanese artists should've noticed this. A lot of Miyavi's songs are great examples of his style i.e. What's My Name (I suggest to look up the Birthday live version), Strong, Survive, etc.
Another excellent artist he's been collaborating with is TK from Ling tosite sigure, with whom he's proven his *true* capacity as great rock drummer I believe. I highly suggest to check any of these TK's song: Fantastic Magic, Crazy Tampern, Sainou, Tsuru no Shikaesi, Chou no Tobu Suisou, Abnormal trick. You guys will be blown away by BOBO's crazy skills!😆
Yoyoka is so lucky being able to play with great musician like him!!

Yoyoka’s drumming is getting more precise and nuanced every day. It’s very cool that people like Bobo take the time to help her; I thought he had a lot of very valuable and interesting things to say, and it’s extra-cool that he is so familiar with Yoyoka’s work so far. He saw clearly her natural feel and energy, and subtly gave her tips on different ways to “think” about drumming. Very enjoyable video, thanks again!❤️
It is a remarkably enjoyable philosophical discussion about sound and performing. Bobo gave Yoyoka valuable advice about playing with the Miyavi at the music festival. Did she learn any new skills. Maybe. Did she engage with a peer several times her age. Indubitably. One of the best Yoyoka's Drum Lessons in many moons!

I totally LOVE this meeting! Bobo's such a great guy, talented (of course) and funny, I don't know if he's regularly teaching but I think he would be a great teacher! And it's great to hear such a musician understanding what makes Yoyoka so unique and precious.
BOBO is very busy session drummer working with tons of artists and projects out there in Japan and you know, Japanese music scene is one of the most diverse and productive in the world. I think he only did drum clinics few times and (maybe) online class on certain platform but teaching is not really his formal job.
It's been awhile since the last Drum Course - looking forward to it!
This was the most philosophically interesting drum clinic I've ever seen, and certainly the most fun! And it's very gratifying to hear Bobo give you such great praise, which you so much deserve :-)
Another cool thing is Bobo's name, as a matter of fact: My family calls me Bo, as my older brother couldn't say the word 'baby' and just called me Bobo hehe. I really like him, I must say.

BOBO's samurai solo made me laugh out loud. When he started hitting the cymbal from below, I was absolutely sure that it would fly off the stand and get stuck on the wall. 😆😆😆
It's noticeable that Yoyoka is a natural drummer, and it is clearly heard when they both play together. You close your eyes you can believe that there is only one playing. Both synchronize the beat perfectly and it's not easy. It must come naturally. Some have it and some not.
