Geralt is so prudent with Aard; really does save his life a few times. Wouldn't mind seeing Axii used a bit more in combat.

@@-caesar3751 In the entire book series, Geralt uses Igni just once and that's for cutting some ropes. Igni isn't represented as some super strong flame throwing sign.

In the books, signs are not that practical, Aard is his go to sign, other than that, specific signs need specific situations and they're designed more for monster fighting. Geralt even says that he needs regular intakes of his witcher elixirs to keep his signs adamant, because they fade away without supplements with elixirs.
So don't expect Geralt to just cast big flaming Igni, or Yrden in the show. He literally uses Aard %95 of the time

I played the games only so I always questioned this. Thank you for this. I guess I can't really correct people saying he actually has way more awesome abilities available whenever. Makes sense to amp it up for better gameplay. But in a live action sense, it would be expensive, probably disappointing, (like that Igni). There would be no challenge. I just hate that people just think he has the force. I'm sorry I'm high....😅

Geralt actually have a real talent for magic as well. His sign are way more powerful than your average Witcher, not to mention Geralt having a stronger batch of the mutation compare to any other Witcher. I always think signs are more of a “happy accident” for Witcher’s after the mutation. The mutation infuses magical property to their body forcefully, and turn Witchers into semi magical creatures. Signs aren’t spells, but they are more like an ability.

The show is fucking pathetic about setting up the world. It's not slavic, not Medieval Germanic either. It's just a mish mash of various sorts and doesn't feel like witcher at all

That's how he's mostly like in the books too. Signs are really not that strong in the books, they're more tricks than magical abilities, most sorcerers don't see signs even as magic.
%90 of Geralt's sign casting is Aard for creating confusion or just pushing someone out of his reach. In the Bounds of Reason, he uses Igni. At the very beginning of the book, he uses heliotrope sign, and Axii
Other than that, he just uses Aard when something's amiss. Weird thing though, there's this moment in the books where Geralt found himself in an actual battle he just happened on, his side was blocked by a burning pile of rubble on a bridge, Geralt had no idea what to do so he casts Aard, and *was actually surprised that it worked, because he wasn't taking his witcher elixirs for weeks and his sign casting was supposed to fade when he's not regularly taking his witcher decoctions*
