Nice job! One thing I found that helps when trimming shrubs like this to throw down a drop cloth or tarp to make cleanup easier. Thanks for the video, I moved into a property that has spirea; they look pretty unkempt. I like how compact yours are. 👍🏼
Thanks for the video! Just bought a house and I am learning to take care of the existing plants in the garden. I found a lot of pruning videos for winter/early spring but now I’m in the summer and was wondering how to tame this spirea beast as it’s getting too close to the house haha! It still has colorful blooms on it so I think I will wait a little bit to trim it to keep the pop of color.
My spirea bush is 60 years old (or more) and it has never been cut back, only pruned once or twice a year. It has thick branches that don't bloom and looks awful. I was going to cut it to the ground this Fall but maybe I will wait until Spring. What do you think?
Hard prune them to a foot or two off the ground. You wont get blooms the following year but eventually they will grow back in the 2nd or 3rd years. Which would be at ideal height for maintenance.

Turn your handheld pruners upside down gives you even a closer cut
What time of year did you do this trimming?
I thought those spirea looked much better before you shaved them into a round green ball.

Trimming should be done early spring before flowering, he’s doing it at the wrong time
I did this too mine and they started drying up from the bottom. Does anyone know why that happened??
