I was cringing when you were messing around with the electrics. No socket tester to prove you killed the power (or any tester for that matter). Could have easily been a disaster. Get yourself a tester.
Mate just a word of advice from an electrician... Simply turning off the main circuit breaker is not a means of what we call ‘safe isolation’. Best practice would be to prove the socket live first with electrical testers, isolate the circuit and then prove the socket is dead before removing the socket face and especially before touching any terminals or exposed copper cables. Also I noticed you called it ‘electronics’ at one point, there is nothing electronic about a 230v AC socket outlet. It’s raw electricity, no pcbs or low dc voltages (electronics)
Just saying... invest in some test leads, or at least a multimeter. Use them properly to test for dead, and for gods sake, don’t bother showing people how you could do it yourself, if thy don’t know, they don’t need to be told in a video, they need a professional. For about £20, you could save your life with some test leads, because believe me, I know too well that switches and isolators can fail, I’ve had a bolt from many a machine in the past because of failed isolation components.
Plus you know he bought those jeans with holes already in them. Nothing softer than a dude that can’t earn his own Jean holes. I bet he wears socks with sandals.
Range extenders are garbage, and Alex knows this because he is smart and uses roaming networks. That is the only way to go, I have never and will NEVER use a range extender Ubiquiti FTW!
Alex you say your professional at doing the videos and you have a professional editor editing your videos OK. so why have you got dinner all over your mouth why did you not have a wash before you did the video it does make the video look absolutely awful
He thinks he is a professional at everything, hence WIFI guru but knowing nothing. +King Griffin no, its not a skin condition, its whatever he had for scoff.....ravioli or something.
Totally agree get everything free from all these companies and makes out that he knows everything he knows jackshit I know a lot more than you'll ever know
And he makes out it's our house well in that case I want to use it next weekend so get the hell out of there and it's mine for weekend and as he probably puts it on Facebook Twitter and RUclips that it's our house he's not got a leg to stand on by law
So if I understand correct. The main WAP is in the house. You walk to the garage where the signal is weak. In the garage you get 5mbps from the main WAP in the house via wifi. You plug in an extender. The Wifi Socket connects by WIFI back to the main house(assuming the Wifi Socket is no more powerful than your iphone it should also be getting 5mbps between the Wifi Socket and Wifi Router in the House). OK..... so now you connect your iphone to the Wifi of the Socket and maybe you get full strength signal to the WIFI Socket. But theoretically the internet speeds will still be poor because the Wifi Socket only gets a 5mbps connection back to the house. This wifi socket rebroadcasts an existing WiFi signal (Receive, replicate, and extend). Not to be confused with a powerline adapter which allows network data to travel via the electrical system into a receiving adapter in another location. A good quality powerline adapter would provide a better wifi signal. Am I right or wrong? Someone help me to understand this? :)
Unless the reciecver coil in the socket is a lot larger than a mobile device and can pick up a stronger signal before repeating it as its main powered. Although, I wonder how much electricity it uses as it's always on.
Ever heard of safe isolation Alex ? If you’re gonna show people you changing a socket at least check with a voltage tester there is no voltage present, just because it says sockets doesn’t necessarily mean all the sockets will go off for example they could be labelled up wrong or fed from elsewhere !🤠🤠
Safe isolation isn’t Carrie doubt using a proving unit alone... a proving unit just shows that your test leads or meter is working properly. Safe isolation requires switching off what you assume is the correct switch, locking it out if it is out of sight or has a risk or being purposefully re-energised, proving the test leads, then testing between live and neutral, live and earth, and neutral and earth, then proving the leads again. These are things that people will not do at home, because the equipment is not insignificant to buy, and it’s hassle. So really, just leave all the electrical work off camera, and instead tell people to seek professional advice.
@@fitmydashcam yep true mate voltage indicator and proving unit that complies with gs38 are not cheap looking at around £150 for both also Alex was showing bad practise by not de-energising the other circuits before the main switch really he should leave the trade professionals to do it and not tell people how to do it as diy
Elliott Killingbeck yeah should of said voltage tester rather than proving unit as it’s not part of his tool bag, however for the amount of electrical work he does a fluke T90 would be perfect...
I would recommend staying away from wireless repeaters at all costs if you know anything about networking and wireless communication. I would always recommend setting a wireless access point you can run a wire back to the main router for better speed etc.
If he was only getting a weak signal in his garage then the extender can only transmit the same weak signal, The extender will appear to be giving a strong signal but in reality, its transmitting an already severely reduced signal. If he'd have carried a glass of water to the garage and spilt half of it along the way, he'd still only have half left, even if he then put what remained in a new glass.
ooh your a funny one :) if you spill the water then the water has gone somewhere. and so it has not been wasted, and thus will be used, Just kidding , i know what you mean, but this is not the case as he is not increasing internet speed from source, But only increasing the strength of the signal to go further. ok lets explain . if you have a weak signal, and lets say where you need to use it, And the signal is only about 30% The packet data from the router to the receiver device can't decode the 4k signal quick enough. before the next packet data comes and so you get data loss via encoding and decoding. from devices. so by using a wifi extender, the signal is picked up and sent in a more efficient way, Boosted/faster data, so in a sense is is classed as amplified. mobile phones work in the same manner,
@@spudnickuk If the extender is in itself only recieving 30% of the routers bandwidth, it cannot then transmit the original 100% of the routers bandwidth (measured at source; the router) because it's simply not picking it up. The extender may appear transmit a strong signal but it will in reality be transmitting 100% of the 30% bandwidth it's receiving, no more.
If the extender is simply not picking up sufficient bandwidth to stream 4k video as you mentioned, it's not going be able to magically make that possible. The solution would be to position the extender closer to the router in order to transmit the stronger signal over a greater distance. (assuming there's nothing in between that would interfere or block the signal). Only then would it potentially be possible to stream the 4k at the point where without the extender it would not be possible.
How does it extend the range? Extenders use one to input to the mains circuit and the other take the network out of the mains circuit? I fail to see how this works...

Please, after you have switched off the power, plug something into the socket you are about to change to check that it really is off. Use something that you have first tested on a live socket, it is all too easy to switch off the wrong fuse board or circuit breaker. Liked the video though.

Request you to please research the topics before recommending people something. If you would have shown the speed test speed before and after the installation of the extender then it would clearly show only marginal improvement if at all. The reason is simple extenders are only useful when the reason for signal attenuation is the distance of the transmitter from the receiver. But when the reason is actual physical obstruction like walls and floors no extender will work. The only alternative is to use LAN or power line to bypass the obstructions.
I thought I'd posted a question but can't find it now. I'm no expert, but is this not an access point, i.e. another name for a WiFi extender? Also, is a plug not a thing you put into the socket, not the thing I to which a plug is put? I'm not familiar with all the correct terms so correct me if I'm wrong.
Yeah it's a socket not a plug. Extenders/repeaters/wireless bridges are signal amplifiers that refer back to the main router which is the Access Point because it distributes IP adresses to devices on the Local area network.
Alex I just gone out and bought one from screwfix tonight, as I installed a wi fi camera floodlight above the garage but was not picking up my router. Going to set this up tomorrow. This is awesome
Hello ! I want to ask if I have chosen a good installation method, I have a large space with lighting poles and I want to install " IP Camera Speed Dome 2MP, PTZ, 200 M IR, Hikvision DS-2DF8223I-AEL + 1602ZJ " , length between the poles is 200 m and I have 6 poles, I chose to use a UTP cable with one switch on each pole to avoid a large number of cables to the unit, feeding the surveillance cameras to the poles. I would like to know if the image quality is lower with this method than connecting the cables to a single switch and then to the unit? Thanks!
Not a hack, just swapping a mains socket. A hack is taking something and then modifying it, like taking a radio and making it into a transmitter. Well produced video, if inaccurate title
Hi Alex, great video. Would you be able to do video on “tech apps” apps you use daily when installing networks systems. Apps like speed test, wifi sweet spot and ubiquti. I’m sure you would use a lot of others. Thanks mate. Keep up the good work. Brock from Melbourne, Australia
Brock Hayden Not a bad idea, from my own experience though you don't really use apps, not on phones anyway. They just don't do it. Some type of standard OS I.e. Windows Linux or Mac OSX is way more helpful when doing these types of things
Why the hell did you not do a voltage check on the socket being removed before going near any of the wires ... just because you turned off the master switch (and you SHOULD have also turned off the breakers for the circuits themselves too!), doesn't necessarily mean the supply has been cut off! SO dangerous not to carry out the extra test. And, thanks to Kenny's note below... DON'T use a neon pen-tester EITHER as they are actually quite dangerous in their own right! Use a decent voltmeter, tested against live to verify its known working okay first. BETTER STILL... GET A PROFESSIONAL TO DO IT.
+1 especially if you live in an old house. I had a bit of a shock (thankfully the backbox took it) to find out that the socket in our under-stairs cupboard was not on the main downstairs ring but the kitchen ring! :(
Hey! TECHFLOW I like videos. But I want to find out, what is the maximum number of WIFI SOCKET I can install????? Again, how many wifi range extenders I can link to one router?
There a waste of money if you go above 2 wifi extenders (depending on the size of your house.) There will be so much wireless signal going round your house that it just cancels each other out and send you back to the original.
I think you need to go back to school and learn about safe isolation. U need to confirm that the double gang socket is dead with a minimum of a multimeter. Hope your followers didn't get a shock. You are also opening yourself up to vicarious liability by not explaining that they need to confirm socket is dead before switching and locking off the breaker. Otherwise a ok video.
@Charles Vane No they do not teach safe isolation in schools. Personally id have tested it but not locked breaker off as hes stood right next to it so not as though anybody could just turn it back on

Why do RUclipsrs create video's, such as yourself than create video's that introduce products or test conpany product's BUT NEVER ever answer questions your user base asks? I truly don't understand it. If someone does, please explain it to me. You know they exist, why not answer people. You don't have to keep repeating the same questions but ignoring comments and hoping for thumbs up on RUclips's algorithm to me is just wrong.

i like this type of video, always good to learn something new.... having played with a number of extenders i think its fair to say they all work but the real issue is if your devices work with it.... a number of older devices do not like being given the option to connect to multiple points with the same SSiD....
I wish I could find that in the US. :-( Makes me feels like moving to UK now.... Needs to find something like that for my use here at home. Especially for ethernet connection one.
I just pressed the wps button on the socket and my sky q router and it connected but I don’t think it’s made any difference,,do I need to go in to my router settings 👍
The wifi extender will be more effective when in close proximity to the location of the data broadband, which will amplify the wifi signal strength to the garage, perhaps one next to the wifi broadband and the other in the location to where the signal strength is weak.
I’ve installed one and don’t really see any difference in my WiFi signals,,,do I need to go in to my router settings because I just used the wps button on the front of it
First Name cheers for that,,you said that because my router has a wps button it might be old but it’s not,,it’s the latest router on the market that isp have on the market that kicks out 5G,,so I’m not sure what’s best to do as in the instructions that’s what it says do using the wps,,,so think I’m going to get some ap around the house
Dj Cheburek no, in the U.K. We call it a socket... because that's what it is.. you plug the plug into the socket... hence why a plug is called a plug.. because of the plugging in..
Ok Alex, not so good, ran some speed tests, massive reduction in performance of WiFi and then the problem, is that you are still connected to the extender when you return to the area which is covered by the main WiFi there for this is simple not worth it, far better to install a proper AP, or Mesh AP
What you didn’t do was an Internet speed test in the garage afterwards (conveniently) - I bet it’s still no better than 5Mb as that’s all the socket will be receiving then redistributing.
Thanks Will - so electrical tomfoolery aside, this video was just a big fuss about nothing. Old hack...
Would this be better for dead spots instead of an ubiquity pro ? Or any other boosters on the marketing for my house??
Next time around, they should make a version that can connect to a powerline/HomePlug AV network instead of just repeating the signal.
Thanks!
Can already tell it is gonna be a good video
Wheelie Jacko Read the comments...he hasn’t got a clue.
Is there an American version of this?
It’s a socket not a plug 🤦♂️ you plug the socket you don’t socket the plug.
Hi buddy, QQ. Can you use more than one socket and would they all be connected on the same network?
This is a brilliant idea for WiFi cctv.
What camaras do you have.
good Q.
5ghz would really get me excited.
I am sure there being done now.
10 ghz will launch me into space.
Not a hack, just swapping a mains socket. A hack is taking something and then modifying it, like taking a radio and making it into a transmitter. Well produced video, if inaccurate title
Awesome video Alex keep the amazing job!!👍👌
Hi Alex, great video. Would you be able to do video on “tech apps” apps you use daily when installing networks systems. Apps like speed test, wifi sweet spot and ubiquti. I’m sure you would use a lot of others. Thanks mate. Keep up the good work. Brock from Melbourne, Australia
Brock Hayden
Not a bad idea, from my own experience though you don't really use apps, not on phones anyway. They just don't do it. Some type of standard OS I.e. Windows Linux or Mac OSX is way more helpful when doing these types of things
Very cool. Do you know if this would work for people living from a van to be able to tap into various free WiFi spots as they travel? 3000w inverter
sneaky girl
Torin it’s all good! 😊
Neon test pens are actually now illegal in the uk
@@jeffreekenny cheers! Comment edited accordingly.
ketchup around your mouth doing a video?...
Right, what's the name of the song he used on his stroll to screw fix?
Thanks bro. Am grateful. Some advice I can use power line adapter TL WPA8630 KIT
You should apply for a presenters job at the Gadget show ! Keep it up ! Thanks for the info.
@John Smith thing called vicarious liability. If they don't mention or demonstrate safe isolation.
@Charles Vane No they do not teach safe isolation in schools. Personally id have tested it but not locked breaker off as hes stood right next to it so not as though anybody could just turn it back on
517 comments and this is the first one of your video's I've seen. One question, which from what I've noticed from searching the comments section but I'll ask anyways? Why do RUclipsrs create video's, such as yourself than create video's that introduce products or test conpany product's BUT NEVER ever answer questions your user base asks? I truly don't understand it. If someone does, please explain it to me. You know they exist, why not answer people. You don't have to keep repeating the same questions but ignoring comments and hoping for thumbs up on RUclips's algorithm to me is just wrong.
Michael Lambert Probably because you put an apostrophe before pretty much every single S
@@BoiledOctopus yeah.. i can totally see your obnoxious comments point. Mobile auto corrects is the reason creator's don't reply to there user base. Thanks for wasting mine and yours time.

Do you know if there are any European sockets anywhere? Not from screw? fix

I think this exactly
Pretty sure it’s mouthal herpes
Keep your hands in control. They look ridiculous when you wave them while taking!
i like this type of video, always good to learn something new.... having played with a number of extenders i think its fair to say they all work but the real issue is if your devices work with it.... a number of older devices do not like being given the option to connect to multiple points with the same SSiD....
I wish I could find that in the US. :-( Makes me feels like moving to UK now.... Needs to find something like that for my use here at home. Especially for ethernet connection one.
Buy it from screwfix and ship it over
I just pressed the wps button on the socket and my sky q router and it connected but I don’t think it’s made any difference,,do I need to go in to my router settings 👍
The wifi extender will be more effective when in close proximity to the location of the data broadband, which will amplify the wifi signal strength to the garage, perhaps one next to the wifi broadband and the other in the location to where the signal strength is weak.
I was not sure how it extended anything...
First Name my router it the sky q router and I’ve also got the Wi-Fi switch in my kitchen
STOP CALLING IT A FERKIN PLUG !!!! trying to calm, trying to calm......
Dont you need to have some qualification to remove/replace a socket?
You only need qualifications if it’s a rented building
lez briddon in the uk we call it plugs
Dj Cheburek no, in the U.K. We call it a socket... because that's what it is.. you plug the plug into the socket... hence why a plug is called a plug.. because of the plugging in..
Ok Alex, not so good, ran some speed tests, massive reduction in performance of WiFi and then the problem, is that you are still connected to the extender when you return to the area which is covered by the main WiFi there for this is simple not worth it, far better to install a proper AP, or Mesh AP
well of course its better to install an AP or Mesh
I bet you say 'Can I get...' when you go to Subway in your mum's mini. You da man!
its a fucking socket, and its electrics
Got one myself, it’s the best thing ever. Really pleased.
NOT REALLY A HACK JUST AN UPGRADE. But a good video simple, straightforward, informative. Keeping right to the point! Thankd
Tech channel, doesn't know the difference between a plug and a socket...
No final speed test?
clean your face mate, looks like you've been eating some tomato soup.
Is there an outlet for the US
This only says to me, hey kids go and get your dads screwdriver and take the socket off the wall and replace it, what could possibly go wrong.
He did give a warning tbf
Which tables you are using??
