    Played a Cairn adventure recently, and my players now understand how deadly Cairn combat is. Made for a less combat, more problem solving focus, which made for a richer experience. And it was way more fun than we've had since the early days. (Been playing since the 70s)

    20:05 No. Not whatever damage, only when it takes you to *exactly* zero. So if you had 3 hp you’d have to take 3 damage to earn a scar and it would tie to 3 on the table.

    • @yochaigal
      @yochaigal Год назад +12

      Yeah, somehow I still am unable to explain this in the space available... I think I'm gonna change it to "whatever your HP was before it was 0, that's the number you look at on the table."

    • @axewizard
      @axewizard  Год назад +5

      Makes sense to me, good catch!

    • @carlosoros53
      @carlosoros53 Год назад +10

      @@yochaigalperhaps you could rephrase it as "if you take damage equal to current HP (no more, no less) roll on scars table".

    • @SoloBattles
      @SoloBattles Год назад

      @@yochaigal So if you took 6 hits and had no armor and 3 HP, you would look on the three result? If you took 2 hits and had one hit left, and then you were hit those 6 again, you would look at the 1 result?

    • @SoloBattles
      @SoloBattles Год назад

      So you could say that whenever an attack reduces you to 0 hp or lower, you suffer a scar = to the amount of HP you lost that attack.
      This scales the scars to your total HP.

    -was hoping for more character related stuff like abilities, passives, gears etc- EDIT: I'm an idiot nvm.
    "I’ve written 20 bespoke Backgrounds, each with unique tables (Electric Bastionland style!). The tables help determine both character starting gear and implicit (or explicit) abilities unique to each. These take up the bulk of the book (around 60 pages)."
    I literally interpreted that wrong, thought it was only gear.
    the 2E backgrounds are gonna be sick combined with my homebrew.

    • @axewizard
      @axewizard  Год назад +2

      Entirely valid! The nice thing about the Procedures as that they're entirely optional. I know for me personally I won't be using them as written, but some people have asked for them and there's evidently enough of a demand. I'm totally excited about the expanded Backgrounds, and the concept of Bonds & Omens, and the setting of Vald excites me! The nice thing at its core, it's still Cairn, and 2e is compatible with 1e. There's no harm sticking with 1e, and even taking bits and pieces of what you find interesting in 2e and using it how you want, which I think is awesome.

    I would think that a muke or gorse would take one slot, but that slot would be a hand slot. If you don't tie up your animal before combat, it won't necessarily follow you.

    @yochajgal, when i use a spell, i mark a fatigue in a slot, this meaning i lost a space, in my inventory or i can mark the fatigue in my spellbook i cant use more this spell, but i can maintain the spellbook in my inventory?

    My fear over 2e is that it will take away from the original system.
    The thing that makes Cairn great is the simplicity. Whilst 2e keeps this in as much as you don’t HAVE to use procedures it worries me that Cairn is moving away from its simplistic selling point.

  • @orbitalair2103

    So most of it, 60 pgs is premade 'backgrounds' for chars? Sounds very 5e.

    • @orbitalair2103
      @orbitalair2103 Год назад

      So I read the pdf, its like 25 pages of Backgrounds, Bonds and Omens. BGs are written to the Vald world. Seems like this would be better served as a World addon, but it looks like they are more into 'make it into a book we can sell', even the print friendly version will waste ink and paper. Oh well, ima continue with 1e. Maybe Axe will wow me with the new stuff. To me the BG, bonds and omens are not necessary for the core game.

    • @yochaigal

      Lol yeah this is my crazy business model, here to sell.
      Alternatively, this is something some people want. Just not you. And hey, that's fine! The old game is out there - free as always. Oh, and the PDF for new game will be free as well.
      Great business model....

    I thoughtfully question the paragraph under agency that says don't just ask what your character would do, ask what you would do. Isn't this role-playing? Aren't we stepping outside of ourselves and taking on the role of a fictional character? I would think the advice should lean the opposite way.

    • @ruolbu
      @ruolbu Год назад +1

      Not sure what your background is, but for me it is a less deadly experience. I enjoy playing a character in not optimised way, making rash or ignorant or biased decisions. But from what I see, if you do this in OSR games and maybe especially cairn... you die, soon. While that can be fun, I feel like the game is rooting for the player to survive, to avoid damage and combat. To give detailed descriptions and allow them to make informed decisions. If you as the player then notice a potential solution, but judge your character as too biased/unattentive/whatever to come up with it you have to make a decision what you prefer. Try out the cool idea and have fun going on. Or play your character and have fun dying. Both are valid. That's my takeaway at least.

    So basically it was a rules-lite game that will now be a rules-heavy game masquerading as a rules-lite game.
    No thanks. I’ll stick with OD&D, B/X or RISUS, etc….
    All much faster, easier and every bit as inspiring.
