  • After 4.5 years, countless hours, and moving into a new shop, the restoration of the 1976 Jeep CJ5 my Grandpa taught me to drive in on our farm when I was 10 years old is done! I didn't add any body work or rust repair to the time lapse because it added to much time, but It is the same original tub.
    Finally uploaded the first test drive video: • First Jeep Drive
    Before/After Pics: media/set/?s...
    and for those who are want a long winded account, the full build thread:

    That's what I love about jeeps. The simplest made toy ever, requires nothing but passion. A total newbie could grab one and start tomorrow.

    I was robbed of 46 seconds!! You don’t say if your grandfather is still with us, but whether he is or isn’t he’d be equally proud wherever he is. It’s great how you’ve kept it original but better, eg modern new tyres etc. Very well done indeed.

    This has been my dream project for many years, and I have the know how but unfortunately I don’t have the funds nor do I think I’ll ever will. So I enjoy seeing others get it done.

    What a blast! Going to sit down with my son, watch this video and plan on doing our father/son restore following your example. Can't think of a better way to spend time together and build it from the ground up. BTW: Thanks for telling us it was 4.5 years and not a long 3-day weekend. LOL

    I built a 1986 CJ 7 years ago and chose to build up the 258 instead of the overdone route of SB Chevy.
    The 258 is a solid reliable engine, just a little underpowered.
    I had the block bored .40 over installed a Crane cam, Offy 4V intake, 450 cfm Holley 4V
    .Pacesetter coated header.
    After a few thousand miles i took on my buddy who had a CJ 7 with the 304 that he put a Carter 4V carb and headers on.
    Each run i was able to beat him, plus it didn't lose the better front to rear weight balance the lighter 6 offers.

    Ive had a bunch but loved my 73. It had a built 4.2 and would outdrive a Porsche in the curves ( maybe) and the frame was so rusty she would flex with the best of them. Dam good fun.

    • @russellsrandomness
      @russellsrandomness  6 лет назад

      Shane Raymer thank you! It was in God awful shape before hand though. I just didn't include all the rust repair in the timelapse because it wasn't fun to watch. Had to cut the floors out, something like 28 patches in the fenders and tub, and the entire passenger side was cut off and replaced.
