Hey Darrell! Absolutely love this guitar!! Sounds Awesome and looks even better lol. Thanks Brother for an excellent review, can’t wait to hear the other one!!! Cheers Buddy!!!!
What a great variety of tones and truly unique sounding... but that finish... oh, my! Thank you for introducing me to this line of guitars. Great demo, Darrell.
i have been looking at these D'angelico guitars as they pop up on different sites. They always look cool, but i was unsure about the sound & play-ability.... i am 100 sure, after watching this, that i have to have one! Thanks again DBG!
It's really more a Fender neck than Gibson. Sure t has 3×3 tuners like, G, but the satin maple back is all F. And that's were most of your contact with a guitar is : its' neck.
I swear by D'Angelico... I have 12 guitars and my go-to guitar is my D'Angelico Deluxe Ludlow. It's the best guitar I have ever played and I also own a Gibson Les Paul Standard. I learned long ago that a quality guitar does not necessarily need to come from one of the big name outfits like Gibson or Fender. I love how this video captures the essence and history of D'Angelico guitars. Great video!
What a sleeper! I think that there is a lot of good stuff inside that guitar that wants out! I noticed that the neck pup is slightly tilted to the neck.
I’ve always liked pearlescent things, but I’ve never seen a pearlescent guitar before. Looks mega cool, also been really digging the variety of guitars on your channel recently
I just played one of these today at the local shop and let me just tell you these guitars are absolutely incredible nice thick neck resonates really nice... better than any epiphone you'll find 100X better than any fender I've played I'd you're thinking about buying one just do it it's really awesome
I have a 2018 D'Angelico EXL-1 jazz box that is very nice. Great neck, great electronics, great build quality and seriously playable right out of the box. The solid bodies look fantastic and I'll bet the quality is great. I seriously doubt that headstock is going to be a big seller though in solid bodies. I really think they need to do something about the design of it even though it doesn't take anything away from the guitars performance.
I have fond memories with that brand. I dont know if its the same company to this day. I used a humbucker from them in 1976 in an Fender Tele. I have pictures of it to reminde me to this day, made a nice humbucker tele.
From Leo: D'Angelico has really made it's presence known in the market. In addition to great playing and sounding guitars, they have proudly brought Bling back. Thanks for the test, am looking forward to your review of the Single cut model
I have no clue what it costs. I'm sure it's not cheap. It sounded great and the quality of the hardware looks top notch! The frets are nicely rounded on the ends. Just everything looks beautiful! That's a gorgeous guitar!👍😎🎸🎶
Darrell...the problem is that everything you try out sounds good! That speaks volumes about you as a player, your gear and your recording technique. I gotta say.....nice job👍🏼 Always enjoy your reviews.
Another Great Vid! Have a D'Angelico Exell SS , plays beautifully and is way more versitle than anticipated. Would like to see your reviews on some of the D'Angelico Semi Hollow's. I'll certainly try to grab one for Christmas time ! Thank you Darrell and thank you to the Angelico people ! They do things seriously, it shows, and you can hear it . Ravishing, charming beauty, very even, fully resonating instrument, gorgeous sound whatever the settings, especially on the middle position. Now one question : Reverend... or d'Angelico ?... Airsonic... or Deluxe Bedford ? For those who read this, I would like to know which one would you choose...
I have the same question: Reverend or D'Angelico ? I think i need more a Fender sound but with a lot of versatility (great clear but also good for "agressive" sounds for noise rock, and even stoner rock).
Nice to see a guitar design that isn't just another Les Paul, Strat or Tele clone. Looks like D'Angelico put some serious thought into how it wanted to enter the solid body game. Now I just need to knock over a liquor store or two to get the funds for one of these! ;-P Thanks for such a well-produced and thorough review, Darrell.
Been looking at some used Fender Toronados and this definitely looks a lot like it. I liked the Toronado because it had a Jazzmaster type look to it but with the 2V/2T knobs on it. Going to check these out now too.
Love your playing as usual. I love the color on this, but the pickguard could be smaller or darker color and it wouldn't hide so much of that beautiful finish (in my opinion). Great review as always. God bless bro! 🎸😎👍
That was some nice informal noodling =) Visually that guitar is a bit too fancy for me but it sounds great and I really like that they're trying out stuff.
Interesting (for me) that these two should pop up on Darrell's channel now. Two weekends back I brought home the Atlantic in natural finished swamp ash. Everything else appears identical to the black one Darrell shows in the beginning of the video. Locking tuners, split-coil humbuckers, beautiful fit and finish and incredible playability. And maybe most importantly, tone, tone and tone... and what I mean by that is that not only does it have great tone, but it has a ton of different tones (much as Darrell demo'ed on this video, even though the pickup config is different on the Bedford.) These are GREAT first solid-body's from D'Angelico... As an aside, while the guitar was waiting for its case at the check-out counter, a store employee (speaking to another store employee) said "$hit!, someone's buying this? I love this thing..." And FWIW, it was the last one they had in stock, so I think the word is out!!! Darrel, I'll be looking forward to your review on the Atlantic!
I would love a comparison with the New Bedford Sh vs a FenderStrat HSS. SAME pickup configuration. Would love to see which guitar would be best for which genre.
Great looking guitar, except for the massive pickguard. I would like to see it with a smaller pickguard on one side only, or no pickguard. It would also have been nice if they would have put gold covers on the pickups to match the bridge and tuners.
I'm personally after the Ludlow deluxe, but I worry that because it isn't getting the hype that the other two are that when I'm ready for it they will have discontinued it. It covers the same kind of ground as the Atlantic but with a more niche shape. I think it's the coolest of the 3 personally.

That my friend is one sweet guitar you got there. I have a question for you Darrell, When you ship it to me will it be in a hard case or a gig bag? lol... I am not that familiar with D'Angelico guitars but those two you are holding have peeked my curiosity for sure. I can't wait for the demo of that other one. I really love the blue/purple paint job on this one. Earlier today I ordered some new paint for my airbrushing and one of the colors I chose is that same blue/purple chameleon like your guitar has, now I really want to see it on a guitar lol. Other than the paint the two things that jumped out to me on this guitar is 1) the head stock and 2) the pick guard. I like the way they did some styling to the end of the pick guard, all to often a pick guard is just plain but not in this case. I am not familiar with the head stock history you spoke about but now I am going to educate myself on it. I really love that! I have a completely off the subject question for you Darrell, or anyone else with experience in this area. Wireless or corded amp hook up. What's your pro's and con's of those? I play using my wireless simply because I play sitting down, I'm not a gigging musician and due to a back injury I cannot stand up for very long holding a guitar. Due to my sitting down, when I need to switch to a different amp or for whatever reason, the chair I sit on is on wheels and too many times I have rolled over my guitar cord so I went to wireless, plus if I have to go to the kitchen to get a drink or see if someone is at the door I can just get up and walk out and not have to worry about a cord. I have heard from others that the wireless loses some of the tone and some have had issues with latency. I don't have any problems with latency, I use the Xvive 2.4ghz models, about $150 at Zzounds in case anyone is interested. So whats your thoughts/experiences?
I dig the middle position with stacked neck and split bridge. Anyone know if this is set-in or neck-through construction? I'm guessing set, and I really wish other set neck brands like Gibson or PRS used that recessed neck joint. I hate my boxy LP joint...
Beautiful guitar. I had a "real built by John D'Angelico New Yorker back in the late 1960's. It was a gorgeous guitar that should have been kept but I was young and foolish.
