Hey Daz What do you think of heritage guitars ? I picked one up in my local g store the other day and it was killer. Would be great if you could get your hands on one and do a review. They are all made out of the old Gibson factory and equipment most of the staff are ex Gibson too
Always thought Bob Weir was not recognized enough as a guitar player- it wasn't until I watched 'The Other One' documentary that I realized just how good he really was. Obviously heard his playing but that solidified for me. While I'm not a super Deadhead, I still recognize the singular musicianship of the members and influence the Dead had. This is a great sounding guitar!
Same. Buddy of mine owns a guitar shop and he showed be some of this brand, but the headstock reminded me of some southern mansion yard light post. It does. But now I can tolerate it because the Atlantic and this model are so purdy.
Darrell, great demo of this versatile guitar! The 'Dead', in their day, were the musical ambassadors of the S.F. music scene. Also, Bob Weir and Steve Miller were among a handful of guitarists to put Ibanez on the music map back in the early '70s.
I would really enjoy a video/review of you playing Brian May’s Red Special, it’s an extremely cool and very versatile guitar (he can get strat, tele, and LP sounds all in one guitar!)
First! That is one awesome guitar and I absolutely love guitars made by this company! I went to a music store called Cool Cat, and I’ve played guitars from this company and they are fantastic! Edit: thank you for 14 likes :)
How to play like Bob Weir live: Start playing the song, adjust your tone knobs, gesture to sound man to fix something, gesture again to the sound guy or guitar tech that something isnt right, keep playing, go to your rig control boxes behind you, mess with knobs, return to mic to sing next verse, gesture to guitar tech or soundman again, return to adjust knobs on rig box, shake head, pull out ear monitor and throw it on the stage in disgust, sing next verse, return to mess with knobs, shake head,, play the rest of the song. Continue above until his next song, a slide guitar gem with him and jerry such as Little Red Rooster, and watch him settle in and groove. Its how he started every dead show.
Yes indeed. That was so typical of every Dead show. One time at Autzen Stadium he broke a string on the first song, Jack Straw. He stormed off and you could see him back there shaking the guitar in some techs face. That was fine. It gave Jerry time to do a much longer jam solo.
Darrell. Thanks so much. We are in lockdown in UK due to COVID. I wanted a new guitar and impatience was getting the better of me. Unable to visit a guitar shop I googled “most versatile guitar” and up popped this review. Upshot - you convinced me, I bought one and indeed it is awesome and I love it. Big fan of the channel. Thx again. Kev

Awesome review! You are the only one I can find who is really putting it through its paces and adding dirt. That shows how versatile it is. You put D'angelico back on my radar. Thanks!
Wow. Impressive guitar. And stellar playing as always. Love the tones; less so the aesthetics. I would probably just get confused with that many options, but seems like that would be great for studio work.
I watched bob weir use it, in dead n Co. but I didn’t know about the pickups and electronics. That’s a great guitar! It’s really cool how you are able to improvise and play that shows how the guitars can sound. Great demo!
Tasty licks at the end! Glad the guitar isn't reliced and doesn't look like a Strat or a Paul. Rock on!

I agree with you, myself I don't like the reliced look, I would never buy a new guitar that looked all beat up that's stupid, if it looks like that, I want it to be because I've played it for so long it has that look earned from year's of playing by me.
Kent Rath I would never buy a new guitar that is reliced. What a waste. If a guitar is beat up used you would pay less than if it is mint, yet if it’s beat up brand new it cost more. It doesn’t make sense to me. If you like the looks of old beat up guitars just buy used. It’s so strange to buy something new that is beat. Guitars are the only thing that happens. If it was a car or a tv or a house or anything other than a guitar no one would want to pay extra.
Mine only has one Duncan JB reverse zebra. I am too busy onstagege to change pickups on the fly. I only ever needed ONE pup. Tone is in the fingers mate!
Hey man !!!! I just gotta said I freaking love your videos!!! You explain everything in detail and also you put so much effort into this !! It reflects that you love doing this !!!! Amazing!!!!! Keep rocking and doing this awesome vids!!!!
Didn't notice much of a drop off in tone in the bridge between the stack and split. On another note, this has an MSRP of $1,999 and is a MIK.....I realize the pickups add to the cost, but still a bit overpriced imo.
After giving it some thought, I figured out how to do the "odd man out" function (all three pickup on positions 1, 2, 4 and 5) with a 4-pole super-switch (although I used a pull pot instead of a blend control). I've employed it on one guitar so far, about to use it on another one. Cool stuff!
Thanks Darrell for showing me my next guitar. I have Fenders & Gibsons and my favourite guitar by a mile is my D’Angelico Excel DC semi hollow body in flame red. It’s streets ahead in playability & sound IMO and this Bob Weir signature will fill my P90 obsession perfectly.
I believe the most versatile guitar has to be Brian May's red special . It has two switches for each pickup. On/off toggle and in/out of phase . So you can have whatever pickups you want on and select which you want in or out of phase . Produces some tones that I've never heard on any other guitar too !! Anyway great video as always mr Darrel and awesome guitar!
in order for a guitar to be dubbed "the most versatile" it would need a piezo pickup. that is the most different sounding pickup for electric guitar and can be blended with magnetic on some really versatile guitars.
I'm not the biggest fan of D'Angelico styling but I would have to agree with you Darrell, this is a really well made guitar with so many tones and great sounds. The noiseless P90's are fantastic!
A beautiful quality instrument! Now if there would be a model designed after the Yamaha SG or Revstar without having to pay an arm and leg for it. Thanks Darrell for another gr8 find!
What a delightful oddball. I have to wonder how much spaghetti wiring is in that thing to make it do all those combinations. It's a rather pretty guitar, too, though I'd like it in some wild colour.
Damn! That's one beautiful, badass axe! The one thing I found a little odd is that it looks like you have to turn the blend knob "down" in order to activate the blend mode. I wonder why that is? I would think it should start at the "zero" position, and blend up the same direction as volume and tone. At any rate though, still awesome! Excellent job, Bob!

The biggest find in the guitar world is the hot shots by SD. It lets you split the coils and choose between parallel and series all in the mounting rings. For LP or flat guitars. I've started changing out all my guitars with them. Not that the push pull pot is bad but these are SOOOO much easier to wire into the guitars. The first pair I got was with SD p-rails put into my LP. Absolutely amazing sound! On a clean channel there is such a difference between the parallel and the series wiring. I had no idea. Darrell can you do a demo of them.
Love the body shape and the fantastic gray pearloid pick guard. Alas, I've never liked "gold" hardware, especially with gray / black, so it only gets 4 stars for appearance. Tones are another matter. Just as you said, Darrell, it's pretty much versatility exemplified in an electric. All that's missing is a piezo setup a´la Parker Fly. Sounds fantastic, looks wonderful except for the "gold" hardware.
If you want similar options in a strat, get some stacked single coils like the Smoke Stack from Irongear pickups. I have a 'strat' with P90 in the bridge and two two single coils. The neck is a Smoke Stack and it sounds just like a P90 OR a single coil. Paired with the bridge P90, it's a fantastic setup. Really versatile.AND I have the option to combine neck and bridge. Can't recommend it highly enough!
I can't believe this video popped up in my reccommened videos today. I just bought a new one of these from Sweetwater yesterday. I am having it Plekked and adding a tusq nut. I should have it in less than 2 weeks. :)
I have a 79 Ibanez st300 with pre amp. 2 humbuckers with coil split and polarity change. Also quite a lot of possibilities but in the end I always use the same 3 combinations.. Great video Darrel thx for sharing
Nice Vid Darrell! I have a set of the Noiseless SD P-90s on my Les Paul ‘60s Reissue (due to 60cycle hum) and I just Love them! That’s a Beautiful looking and sounding Guitar! I really wish they made the model I want in a Left Handed Version! Please keep up the Good Work! And Thank You for the Demo and Review!!
Bob and Steve Miller both played Ibanez artist from the late 70s. The AR 420 ,325 had the tritone switching flying fingers pups which made them very capable of producing a wide array of tones. They even had mahogany bodies with maple caps and set necks. You can get l.p. tones to Tele tones. The new reissues are made from mahogany with a flame maple veneer top and a mahogany neck. They reissued a set neck l.p., 200,600,700fm as well. Anyway since Ibanez artist had so many tonal options its no wonder his new signature model would also have the same. Btw those Ibanez artist reissues are around 250 bucks used at GC if your patient enough to wait for the right one. I remembered them from the 70s and I always wanted one. These are great quality. Ibanez has always had great QC even in China and Korea.
I'm a simple guy: 2 hums OR 2 P90s + 2 vol + 2 tone + 3-way toggle, 3 sc strat + 5-toggle, 2 sc tele + 3-way toggle. Those are all I want. I don't like a guitar to sound like everything, because to me the guitar winds up sounding like nothing. Not knocking others with different tastes, mind you, but splits and all that is definitely not for me. The most I could see adding would be a Fernandes sustainer or that 6-way tone selector thing on the B.B. King guitar, that seems pretty cool for blues.
Utterly amazing. Beautiful guittar. Looks like the basis for the ultimate kit build IF (a very big IF), I could get my head around the electroninics. You are susch a tease tho, making us wait for the upgrades. My guess is they won'nt actually make that much difference. Can't wait to see.
Yup, i hear ya. Gold hardware is awful. Especially on a guitar with a body volume like that. Silver, of even black (at a push) would look so much better.
P Frank The gold doesn’t bother me so much but blends in or complements the rest of the guitar better on black guitars. It’s the cream pickup covers that I don’t like but that’s a fairly inexpensive fix.
I think the entire guitar is ugly. It's like it's trying to be classy and "every day man" at the same time, and it's just not pulling it off. That headstock is ugly, I'm not feeling the gold hardware on a blue body, I hate the pickguard, etc. It's just not for me. I think it's one of the ugliest guitars I have seen in quite some time. I could see people diggin it, but for me, it's such an eyesore.
I would have loved to hear the guitar clean. Es[ecially, with the 5-way selector. I imagine that you can get some really funky, R&B, jazz tones form this guitar.

My dream guitar when it comes to the pickup variety and switching. ;-)
Another cool Video and another cool guitar...
this is really cool
Bobby's best tone is from 69-74, when he used gibsons
I'm a simple guy: 2 hums OR 2 P90s + 2 vol + 2 tone + 3-way toggle, 3 sc strat + 5-toggle, 2 sc tele + 3-way toggle.
Those are all I want. I don't like a guitar to sound like everything, because to me the guitar winds up sounding like nothing. Not knocking others with different tastes, mind you, but splits and all that is definitely not for me. The most I could see adding would be a Fernandes sustainer or that 6-way tone selector thing on the B.B. King guitar, that seems pretty cool for blues.
beautiful guitar
Utterly amazing. Beautiful guittar. Looks like the basis for the ultimate kit build IF (a very big IF), I could get my head around the electroninics.
You are susch a tease tho, making us wait for the upgrades. My guess is they won'nt actually make that much difference. Can't wait to see.
The sounds are great, but the gold hardware is a turn-off for me, especially with the black/silver color scheme.
That actually strikes me ... like those b&w vids with one color showing... like a rose or whatever. I love it!
Yup, i hear ya. Gold hardware is awful. Especially on a guitar with a body volume like that. Silver, of even black (at a push) would look so much better.

The gold doesn’t bother me so much but blends in or complements the rest of the guitar better on black guitars.
Get the premier
Sounds like bar blues played through a distortion pedal in every position
I should never buy this one 'Cause I would spent more time checking out sounds than playing the thing.
Looks great though
I don’t care about these pickups combination the guitar sound good no matter what.
i have seen the dead so many times and can't imagine what they would sound like with that bad boy
I would have loved to hear the guitar clean. Es[ecially, with the 5-way selector. I imagine that you can get some really funky, R&B, jazz tones form this guitar.
You sure can
If I had one guitar that does it all.. it would definitely be a D'angelico. I think I'd switch to black pickup covers thought
Never heard of this model before-very cool!
欲しい…!!!
What a beauty
Yeah! My favorite brand! 😍
Wow, great review! (And great guitar!)
