I'll never understand the liking to Solaire, if you think about it, he is just a weird fanatic... in society, he surely would be in prison. There are reasons why undead are casted away. Your own character picks up rubbish and dung pies and keeps them on their inventory.

The legend of Dark Souls' difficulty really comes from the era in which it was released. It was a time when games were REALLY hand holding the player with cover based shooting and quickly regenerating health, QTEs (that may not even punish you for failure), levels being long corridors with no deviation punctuated with set pieces and just doing everything in their power to prevent the player from failing or getting lost.
The Dark Souls came along and went "Here is your world, here are you enemies, here are your tools, you figure it out."
The actual difficulty isn't that great, it just expects the player to put in a certain minimum amount of effort to learn how to play.
(It's also why anyone who says the Dark Souls series needs an easy mode is actually just saying they don't want to learn how to play, they can't be bothered to put that minimum effort it.)

The reputation as a super difficult game suited only for the most hardcore masochists definitely hurt this game a ton.
I've seen a bunch of videos where people think they're supposed to fight the tutorial boss with the garbage non-weapon that does 1-2 damage, and then they say "oh wow this really is a difficult game". They also often go straight to the graveyard and stay there because it's a super hard game right? If you struggle you just gotta git gud right? It's such a shame.

Indeed. I was like that once. Although I didn't think it was the "hardest game ever" but I though it was so tough that a regular gamer like myself wouldn't be able to beat it and I didn't even attempt to look up what it looked like and all. One day, a friend that played it made me try the beginning and to my surprise the difficulty was waaaaaay over exaggerated. It was tough but fair. No need to be a pro gamer, even someone with little talent for video games like me could beat it with enough patience. Nowadays I finished ds1, 2, 3 and sekiro as well as elden ring.
It's just like how myth and legend get born. It start with a true statement and get exaggerated over time so much that it become nothing like the reality.

    • @NexusKin
      @NexusKin 2 года назад +2

It was only through extensive trial and error that I found out what you're actually supposed to do to make everything easier for yourself down the road. At the character creation menu, select the Master Key so that you can open almost all the locked doors you find. Immediately after you arrive in Lordran, you're supposed to go down to Blighttown, go all the way down the Great Hollow, and then run across the entirety of Ash Lake to get to the Stone Dragon. If you cut off its tail, you get the Dragon Greatsword, an extremely powerful weapon that requires 34 Strength to wield it two-handed and 50 Strength to wield it one-handed. As a bonus, that Hydra that was chasing you the whole way ends up killing itself if you just wait at the tree entrance, which gives you 10,000 souls.
Now, you have to run all the way back up to Firelink Shrine without dying or getting cursed by the Basilisks, make your way through Undead Burg, and unlock the door that leads down to Darkroot Basin while avoiding Havel at the bottom of the tower. After you rest at the bonfire in the bottom cave that the Black Knight is guarding, climb up the Basin, go left to reach the Titanite Demon, and get past it to Andre The Blacksmith.
Finally, if you have 20,000 souls by this point, you can buy the Crest Of Artorias, which unlocks that secret door in the Darkroot Forest. The enemies behind it give you 18,000 souls per round if you kill them all, so just keep killing them and dump your experience points into Strength until it reaches 50. At this point, you can now not only wield the Dragon Greatsword one-handed, but also Havel's Greatshield, the absolute best shield ever that you'll find behind an illusion wall in Anor Londo later on.

But the over arching swoop of The Undead Burg isn't exactly holding your hand. It just blends in with the cinematic. Also you don't realize for quite a bit that what you see in the distance is something you will explore. I grew up playing Atari and NES games. This was one of the few that threw you in the deep end (and said to just learn) I loved it.

Yes, and that is because in Elden Ring you are really meant to do so more than in Dark Souls. Sure, you can choose not to fight a boss in Dark Souls, and level up more. But most of the time, you don't really need to. I feel like those games encouraged the repeated attempts more than Elden Ring. The closed boss rooms, with your souls trapped inside. The way that if you naturally progress and level up, you will be in a good spot to face each boss, supposing you took the "normal" route to get there. The fact that it isn't open world, and your route is largely a choice of this path or that, rather than the total freedom of Elden Ring.

My first souls game was DS3, and I struggled for about a half hour learning the controls. It was the first action RPG I had played in a very long time. There is nothing at all difficult about any of these games. The games do handicap you in a few places, but there are cryptic solutions to all of these problems. People often ignore the puzzles and clues (like that clues about level boss weakness are in the item drops you get--i.e., they are giving you assistance for the fight), and make the games harder than they need to be. You really can't claim these are skill games when EVERY enemy is severely vulnerable to an easily exploited weakness. You won't find other games that have multiple methods to one-shot bosses.

You beat around the bush with it but the reason no Souls game is really hard is because they're RPGs, and all RPGs can be broken in some way. The problem is a lot of people go into these games like they're playing a straight up action game. Literally just cave man it up without thinking about their build, stats, equipment loadout, etc. Kinda sad honestly since you're missing out on a lot of the fun playing that way.

  • @David-And-A-Half

As meme-y as this video is it's not wrong. Too many Dark Souls tutorials are hyper specific about min-maxed builds that over complicate things, promise the world and deliver poor results. They try to reduce boss fights down to one flashy/funny but very inconsistent trick. They try to make gimmick builds that do monster damage. Most of the time those tricks only work in very specific circumstances that newer players don't understand.
What Ryu is doing looks basic but it's 1000% more reliable. He's getting his stats and weapons up to the level where bosses die in under 10 hits and then cherry picking his opportunities to attack. When a boss gives him a safe window to attack he gets in, hits it once* then gets back to safety. It seems slow which makes it tempting to go for a second swing, but whenever you attack you lose control of your character and leave yourself open to being attacked. That's where you die most of the time. Since it takes him less than 10 hits to kill the boss he doesn't need to rush. He can do cycles of attack, retreat, wait relatively easily and because it's only 10 attack cycles he has plenty of flask charges to fix his mistakes.
*On larger windows you can attack multiple times, but the key is to always do one less attack than you think you can. If the window feels like it's open to 3 attacks odds are you'll land the third hit but get smashed by the boss before you can get back to safety. Remember, you're not just using the window to attack, you're using it to retreat and sometimes you're going to skip attacking and use it to heal, since drinking from your flask leaves you just as vulnerable as attacking.

Very nice video! Souls games are hard BUT, as you just showed there are MANY ways to tune the difficulty to your liking, and as the souls games got more modern they got even more ways to make the game as easy or hard as you want it to be. It's only that those ways to make the game easier are part of the game (grinding, exploring for items and upgrades, outsmarting the AI, using summons) instead of hiding in a settings menu.

Dark Souls is a mental challenge, rather than a physical one. The trick is to observe your opponent carefully to understand its weaknesses, and there's rarely an enemy whose weaknesses can't be exploited by basic mechanics (like strafing). The only exception is possibly Gywn, who is considerably faster and more aggressive than most other things in the game, but even he has a very wide parry window, and parrying is (again) very simple if you just observe. I'm on my second playthrough of DS1, melee-only, with a focus on parrying as many attacks as I could, and my first death came with some bullshit one-hit kill towards the end of the Gaping Dragon boss fight. For reference, that's roughly the sixth or seventh boss and halfway to Blighttown, one of the more challenging areas in the game. So Dark Souls is not difficult. It's challenging, but not difficult.
