That is, they want Raiden (a person who pretends to be a rookie so that he does not confront his child solider past) to submit to the Patriots entirely, and partially to mock Raiden they put in obstacles that have double identity (Snake is Snake but has to pretend to be Iroquois Plissken, Ocelot assumes the identity of Liquid Snake, all the Dead Cell members have meaning that fit more obscure readings than what their appearances suggest, Olga is just another terrorist in the first chapter but has to pretend to be a cyborg ninja so that she can save her baby, the bomb specialist fakes his limp so that he can hide his past in contributing to the rise of Fatman and dies being outsmarted, and most importantly Roy Campbell is the AI GW impersonating him and Rose, a person whose history is unclear because Raiden never found out about her, is either another AI or was temporarily replaced with AI by the end of MGS2).

In a particularly dark heroic fantasy, Liquid would be the hero, but as Metal Gear is grounded governmental spy intrigue, the one who does what needs to be done and nothing more is the hero.

Furthermore, whatever he did has no lasting effect. He piloted the REX, but all it did was become defeated by Snake and then was used to defeat RAY. He would probably be the ultimate status quo representative, and the protagonist would literally work to live their life away from stealth missions and the military, but Bose-Einstein Condensate Snake will keep forcing the protagonist back into that lifestyle, so they have to defeat Bose-Einstein Condensate Snake to get to live a normal life, and accept their life as a civilian as opposed to a military person.

I suppose even their names are kind of a nod to that...
at first I thought their names were a little backwards..solids being rigid and possibly stuck as is whole liquids are dynamic and flexible....
then I thought about it a little more and realized how fitting they are
a liquid must conform to the shape of it's container (assuming it isn't just a puddle) and so cannot become it's own shape...volume stats the same, but dimensions aren't dictated by the liquid.
solids don't care the shape of the container. if they fits they sits in whatever shape and orientation they had, regardless. maintaining their own properties.

I think something interesting too is how solid snake has a darker hair color, something more closely related to dominant genes, while liquid has blonde hair, something related more to recessive genes. Obviously the les enfants terribles project was only really changing 60 specific genes in each of them but the hair really convinced you that solid snake has the dominant genes while liquid has the recessive ones, which makes it even more of a twist when you lear that liquid has the dominant genes

something about this short in particular made me imagine a world where you examine kingdom hearts character design and storytelling... i have no clue if you're into that series or not, but i think it has some awesome character AND enemy/boss designs that could be worth examining closer; especially since the head writer and the character designer for the games are literally the same guy (tetsuya nomura). there's a unique cohesion between designs, story, and real world fashion(/events) that i havent seen utilized as well almost anywhere else

I mean, that might be storytelling 101 and a cliche, but it's still a timeless trope and it will remain timeless because of its essence. Cliches aren't necessarily bad, they're only bad if their exploration is shallow and they remain just surface-level.

I wonder if the reason you didn't mention it is because its so obvious but I love that "Solid snake" the taciturn and inscrutable one is the one who advocates for the game's ideals of choice, of fluidity, and LIQUID is bound by the fairly rigid constraints of destiny and predetermination. Very "black spot on the white koifish" symbolism and I love it.

Gotta love the anime trend that started in the 70s/80s of the main villain being this fabulous guy with long flowing locks, but he's still super manly and cool and powerful through his flamboyance.
Shows that a character's values are not constricted to their outer looks...something that I feel was lost in today's (mostly western) media.

Notice how liquid dresses like big boss and sports his ideals, despite hating his connection to the boss and his "cursed genes". He doesn't look like the boss, but he ironically does everything else possible to resemble him. Meanwhile solid looks almost identical to the boss, but he does the exact opposite of his "father" by not letting those who have used him turn him into a monster, and it liberates him. Liquid's perceived slavery to his genes was only ever his own doing.

I'd like to imagine that if Liquid ever got a game that, like you said, it'd probably be a polar opposite to the regular Metal Gear formula. But *not* in the Rising kind of way.
It would probably have to be a more upfront kind of game where you do less sneaking and more shooting. Contrasting by being less John McClane and more John Matrix.
I also think story wise it could be difficult to make him a game protagonist. Mainly because like I've seen one argument say "he's a one-note villain". Which... yeah, but I'm sure it *can* be done well (it's an unpredictable coin flip it either ruins the lore or redefines gaming who cares).
Perhaps taking the route of being opposite to Snake's growth where instead of growing into a respectable soldier he degrades into a bond villain. Maybe at points it's plot could almost convince you that maybe there's redemption for Liquid in some way, but immediately we remind ourselves of the kind of man Liquid is and what the end of his story is.
