I'm embarrassed to admit that I've been painstakingly editing in the MIDI piano roll, then exporting that into my notation software, going back and forth making adjustments. Knowing about this feature is an ABSOLUTE GAME CHANGER! And to think this video has been out there for years... 🤦♀ The time I could have saved myself! Thanks for the education, Kenny, I appreciate it immensely!
I'm constantly amazed at a couple of things: 1) what an incredible tool Reaper is and 2) if I ever need to know how something works in Reaper, Kenny is the go-to guy. This is another excellent tutorial. Thank you, Kenny!!
For me, I JUST discovered Reaper. I've been looking for a program like this for a very very long time. Better late than never -- even at my age. I have 25 years of midi files saved from that many years of playing and composing. Finally, I don't have to struggle with Cubase or Logic or whatever DAW I have or had to get my midi files to come back to life. This is truely astounding. Jimm Burrell, Westerville, Ohio USA
Hi! Reaper is incredible haha. So, do you use another notation software besides this? Or does Reaper have everything you need? I just missed a due date for a composition and a demo track....... i never used sibelius before and the midi files that i exported from reaper to sibelius were not 100% accurate... so i had to work on it more and in the end, i just didnt finish. So i will repeat the question haha, do you use another notation software? Thanks. i just want to know how to make the whole daw & notation thing easier
@@nomacaiu Finale works well, but my experience is that playing the notes into the software doesn't really work well. The software I've used doesn't always "hear"/interpret what is played accurately. I find these programs work much better if we enter the notes into the score manually/via mouse click. Finale is the program I settled on, but all of them have their pros and cons. My 2 cents...
Have used reaper for years now and each time I had to do a transcription for my guitar practice I opened a different software yet I had the magic bullet and never even gave it a go. Another big lesson learnt today. Thanks for the videos.
Another excellent video from Kenny. Just one little tip, instead of Click/Drag a note to change its pitch you can Click to Select then + Up/Down arrow keys. Easier for someone with an unsteady hand like me
That was awesome to watch, I can’t believe they fit so much into this program. It just blows my mind. Thanks again for another awesome and informative video
I don't often work with midi myself - rare piano parts perhaps - but this is an excellent feature i hadn't even guessed existed. Thanks again, Gioia-san: audio sensei!!!
What are you... talking... about... I don't talk like... Christopher... Walken... The only thing... I have to say.... is... I got a fever... and the only... prescription is... more cowbell... It would be better with Walken... Kenny's monotone and spacing in between words is annoying...
Nice. Will be watching more of your videos. I would like to point out that the piece is in A minor vs. C. Same key signature so what you showed us works. Thanks.
Reaper is fantastic with the notation editor, in this way is more comfortable if you are used to Finale or other notation software. Is it possible to use dynamics like Piano, Forte etc? Thanks for the Video :)
Kenny can you program drums this way using drum notation in Reaper? Can you do a video about that? It would be nice if you could import notation in other formats such as Sibelius and auto convert that into midi.
Hi Kenny ;-) your Reaper help/lessons are amazing. I have a question for you. Is there a way to name these music notes as "a,b,c.c# etc" ? as this Notation view would be the best way to print notes on paper, but I only understand letters of the notes not the quavers etc. On the Midi roll it is great to have the "Show Note Names on notes options" but is not easy to print the midi roll like it is on this notation editor. I hope there is a button I can't see that can do this? Best Wishes Pete
Is there a way to use the midi editor to perform different instrument parts, put them in different key signatures, and print them out as sheet music for like a middle school band?
Man I love reaper and these are the best tutorials online, but being exceptionally polite, notation is where reaper is clunky and needs lots of work. Going to stick with it for another week before I go external. I can understand why developers may not give notation the time because many dont read music but I can't think of a better way to back up your work than notation that can be played by anyone. I hope both myself and reaper improve in that section. Piano / Drum roll awesome but notation / scoring I'm not feeling it.
Has anyone figured out how to create a standard jazz lead sheet using Notation Editor? Getting the notes and even chords notated above is easy. But has anyone figured out how to mark sections? Or even put a A or B section note above that does not look like another chord? I'm not worried about trying to get Reaper to start at the beginning, come to the end of Section 1, go to the beginning and play to Section 2, etc. I just want something I could mark up and print out.
How did you get it to show each staff vertically in order on the page? When I import MIDI and go to the notation editor, it just smashes all the notes onto a single staff pair that goes horizontally the entire length of the track.
When I try to use the notation editor, instead of notes I get large rectangles on the staff. Am I missing a special font that is needed for the notation editor to work properly?
Yes, just click alt when hovering your mouse over the note, just like in the piano roll. The notation editor behaves exactly the same way as the piano roll.
Kenny has a video about this too! Use ReaTune. Check 'Send MIDI events when pitch changes'. That will convert your audio signal to MIDI signal. You might need to adjust 'window size' as needed. The latency is pretty harsh, though.

There isn't a online tutor who is more clear than Kenny. Well done.
I agree 100%. Kenny RULES !!! (I wish he did tuts on associated software also, 3rd party VSTs) Nobody is easier to understand than Kenny !
I guess I'm pretty off topic but do anyone know of a good site to watch new movies online ?

Same! Except I've only been using Reaper for a few months or so.. glad I caught this early!
This notation feature just made Reaper the best thing ever!!!!

The reaper guys are really good. They work very hard and always have new innovations and concepts to work easier. Thanks and congratulations.
Brilliant …I learned some useful tips watching this..thanks Kenny🙏🙏🏿👍🎶

Thank you for another great tutorial. IS THERE A WAY TO PRINT CHARTS FROM REAPER?
Yes. You can export as a PDF or MusicXML. Right-click in the notation editor, then File, then go down to Notation: Export (PDF, MusicXML)
Thanks! How can switch on MIDI note recording showing, when play and recording in Live MODE on 5.14 s?

Take care of putting the resolution of the note at least at 1/16 or 1/32 it will help to learn how to draw notes manually.
Is there a way to use the midi editor to perform different instrument parts, put them in different key signatures, and print them out as sheet music for like a middle school band?
excellent as always Kenny - thanks!!!
how to i change the notes from black notes to white notes
How do you create Repeat sections? Is there any way for notation to detect regions and items that repeat throughout to reduce the number of pages?

Can you print the notation?
This is Fantastic, maybe Bombastic!
Is there a way to edit the score layout?
why does the dynamic work?
How do you EXPORT the sheet music to give to other musicians?
Hello, Can anyone teach me how to use this to write triplets. I'm struggling with it. Thanks
Is there a way to change the tempo inside the musical notation editor? My project is at 126 but inside the notation it is at 84 bpm :/ Thanks!
Do the articulations affect playback and if they don't what are the best ways to articulate the playback?
Get better sample libraries.
How did you get it to show each staff vertically in order on the page? When I import MIDI and go to the notation editor, it just smashes all the notes onto a single staff pair that goes horizontally the entire length of the track.
Really really great! :-)
How to export the notation in a PDF file or similar?
Very simple. While in notation editor window, go up to the main tool bar and click FILE, then NOTATION: Export (PDF, MusicXML)...
When I try to use the notation editor, instead of notes I get large rectangles on the staff. Am I missing a special font that is needed for the notation editor to work properly?
Great tutorial, thanks
excelent! useful information
Is It possible to extract MIDI's musical notation to PDF?
Is possible change velocity notes in notation editor?
Yes, just click alt when hovering your mouse over the note, just like in the piano roll. The notation editor behaves exactly the same way as the piano roll.
Is there any way to export the score so I can register my songs?
I wanna see and edit the notes after I finish recording with my live instruments in reaper ... please help show me this.. thanks
This won't do that. This is only for using with MIDI instruments.
Please how can I make the notes visible after recording with a live bass guitar in reaper..??
Kenny has a video about this too! Use ReaTune. Check 'Send MIDI events when pitch changes'. That will convert your audio signal to MIDI signal. You might need to adjust 'window size' as needed. The latency is pretty harsh, though.
I am not able to make the easiest score in Reaper, am I crazy or it doesn't work at all?
Hey Kenny you know if you can export to image or pdf the notation?
Thanks for your videos!
To export, right click in the notation editor, then choose File, then go down to Notation: Export (PDF, MusicXML).
@@shamanbeartwo3819 thanks man!
@@dagamusik - no problem.
@@shamanbeartwo3819 Nice. Thank you!
does notation editor allow adding lyrics?
Yes. Right Click in between the treble and bass clef, then choose Lyrics, then add.
What is the instrument you're using for the piano, Kenny?
Piano One - www.supremepiano.com/product/piano1.html
How didn't I spot it, I have it too. But mainly I use it as second layer for my main piano from Independence. Thank you!
Vadym Mykhaylyuk Why on EARTH would anyone layer pianos??? Just quit that nonsense already
