Does anyone even know the reason Zatch Bell was cancelled? I remember it being insanely popular back when it was on Toonami with trading cards & then being completely gone without a trace. I miss the days of anime being aimed at kids on actual television in massive amounts.

94' Brown because it’s really good, but they cancelled it in the US after a few seasons. So a lot of People haven’t heard of it or just remember it as the show that played on the weekends. I only found out a few years ago that the show continued, just not dubbed

My favorite bit beyond Paco is how Schneider never gets his actually name revealed cause all he can say is "Meru Meru mei" so Kiyo decides to call him Ponygon because he's a pony and he wants him gone. I LOVE THIS SHOW!

Zatch bell, the anime that gets you attached to the characters in the 1 minute of seeing them, then killing them off.
This was the first anime I saw that really taught me I should be ready to get emotionally destroyed as soon as I got attached to certain characters. Still remember watching Lulu's last episode after school and just crying my eyes out at her death. She was the most relatable too as she never wanted to fight in the first place...just make friends.

Dude, the manga makes you get attached to characters for hundred of chapters just to end all of them in one final arc. It's so brutal, God I love that last arc. Plus you see Folgore's true power and he deserves every title ever given to him, that man is truly the Invincible Iron Italian Man

The manga is really freaking good. Anyone who hasn't read it, and wants closure for the characters should check it out. It's about 300 chapters, so it's not crazy long. Really amazing finale.

Bobobo is another hidden gem. And it's actually the only anime that I like watching in my native Spanish dub because it's so good and funny, the voice actors really had a lot of fun

Sherry's backstory was the first time I saw a character in a cartoon try to commit suicide and as a kid, that blew my mind. I liked Zatch bell but Sherry and Drago were my favorite pair.

What's nice about the trope for ZB is it doesn't make the Protag entirely unique? Like he isn't the only person with a tome only he can read, he's just the one we follow.

The manga has an actually excellent final fight with Vrago and he becomes extremely likable, like a Vegeta that's more complex.
Brago is one of the most interesting characters in the series. Sherry wasn't too bad either, learning to not be such a priss.

I know she voiced a lot of characters in TV, Movies, and Video Games, but for the life of me, the only time I was able to recognize her voice in anything was when she voiced Jimmy Neutron, Zatch Bell, and Nergal Jr. from The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy.

I can't believe you forgot to mention the greatest scene in the anime: The Berry Melon song. Words can't describe this masterpiece of an anime scene. Even the likes of Miyazaki and Tezuka couldn't even create something half as amazing even if they had done the fusion dance.
Honestly the whole Victoream thing is one of the most amazing things I have seen.

Absolutely love Zatch Bell. Once I read through all of the manga a few years ago, it became one of my favorite Shonen manga ever, and I still revisit it now and then. Those last couple arcs are intense and amazing, really wish the anime got around to finishing.

@@KaraMorassco You should check out the manga for the final arc. Imagine the same feeling spread throughout a series of chapters, building up to a couple straight chapters of pure tear jerkers. Zatch Bell deserves the Brotherhood treatment even if just to get that final arc on air by itself. It's truly one of my favorite things I've ever read
A gag that works a little bit better in the sub than the dub is how Gash's first spell goes off the first time. When he finds out that Gash is supposed to be living with him now, Kiyo says "Fuzakeruna!" or "You've got to be kidding me!". Of course, that has "zakeru" in there, so he accidentally winds up setting off Gash's first spell and blasting himself with lightning.
I remember being that one kid that actually wrote spells down in a folder to say them later on 😂😂

I would STRONGLY recommend to anyone who has even a faint memory of Zatch Bell to go and read the manga because it is one of the best shounen ever made.

I get so annoyed when people talk about Black Clover power system being amazing and never bring up Zatch Bell that almost has the same power system but better. I still don't get why people in Black Clover don't attack the floating book, it the source of your enemy powers that be my number one target.

Black Clover's power system is amazing? I always thought people in Black Clover can just do *insert magic type here* and use it in a way that reflects a person's personality with all characters able to pull a magic spell out of their asses if they're in a tight spot or seek to become more powerful. It doesn't sound that much different from any other show. I like Black Clover but what makes there system different from any other show or am I missing something because I've only watched upped to when the ghosts of the elves passed on?
@@arcanefury3666 One of the reasons people believe Black Clover has an amazing battle system was a video done by Nux Taku's talking about Black Clover has the third-best power system. There so many Black Clover fans that link me that video, every time I said, Black Clover fights aren't great.
Anyway, I'm up to date with the manga and nothing really changes (besides a power-up that doesn't make sense). Man, Black Clover could be so much better if they bring in more strategy and make the villains smarter.

I mean, the runes make plenty sense. They can give a spell additional inputs outside of what the spell itself entails. That's allows for a lot of versatility.
As for the other thing, Yami does pull spells out of his pretty much tbh. But in general you get a new spell when you further your character development, which is incredibly satisfying. We see this mostly with Noelle.

That what happens in most shonen and Zatch Bell does it a little better since the characters don't know how the spell works and have to figure it out in battle. Adding a new layer to the fight
Alright, I love this show, and I know almost no one is gonna see this comment at this point, but I gotta point out how this show is basically a war in which children are forced to not-quite-kill kill each other. Those sad episodes hit real hard when you're ALSO a kid watching them.
They aren;t kid, they are demon that look like kid to add the cute factor. Some of the demon are cat, robot, etc not all kid looking. They just want them to be cute looking or "funny" looking.

I did love the motivations of Zatch and Kiyo as they went through the series. First just trying to help Zatch get his memories, then actively working to get stronger to defend themselves from the constant random attacks, and finally realizing the cruelty of the Fights and trying to make Zatch the winner so he could find a way to end the suffering. Much more relatable than the common 'Must get stronger because reasons' themes.
I love how gash plans that even if he loses he wants to have other kind demons left behind to become a “kind king”

The manga ending and anime ending between Zatch and Zeno is so starkly different as one relies on the theme of the show that showing kindness takes strength. And the other shits on that idea.
Zeno turn into a big brother that adores his brother in the manga, grow to respect every mamodo and seeing them fight and even respect one by taking his attack head on. Felt his brother pain of while Zeno is suffering, Zatch is suffering hard but maintain a smiling face too.

“Evil Zatch” 😂 They’re brothers. The story arc showing the abusive past Gash (Zatch) went through and Zeon (Zeno) thinking he was snubbed by their father the king by having the power of Baou given to his weaker brother made me feel very emotional. 😭

@@JEAMillennial13 Speaking to the morals of kindness in the series, I think Zeon and his partner whose name may not be spelled are very interesting examples of how those who are abused often end up perpetuating that cycle themselves because they don't know anything else, and how it takes kindness to fix cruelty as opposed to violence in the form of punishment.
Also Answer Talker is ridiculous as an ability and watching two omniscient people basically playing brain-chess for that whole fight was really funny so maybe I'm biased.

Zatch Bell is my favorite anime of all time and one silly reason why I liked it as a kid back then was that my last name was bell. I hope Zatch bell gets a reboot version like hunter x hunter, fruits basket because it deserves it. oh and I played the video games and was super excited it when it came on Toonami.

I am glad somebody is finally doing a review on it. I really hope it comes back with a remake if it gets popular enough since lots of old shows came back too like Inuyasha and dragon quest.

@@kale4580 The anime is mostly its own thing, especially during the Faudo arc. From the Faudo arc to end story, the anime doesn't follow the manga and it never adapted the final story arc of the manga. The anime was never properly concluded.

For what it was, the English anime adaptation was still unique and charming in its own way.
The manga did not get nearly enough love, and unfortunately I think many people (like yourself) when first watching the show did get turned off from it. It does deserve a second chance though in my opinion because the anime omits so many important details and character development, in addition to closure on what I think is one of the best conclusions to a series.
Recently finished the manga, and boy was it on another level compared to the anime!

Dor example we see Kyanchome the duck looking demon actually get a story arc of growth. We see Gash Bell grow into a decent king candidate. Plus the art. Even Kiyomaro gets more love in the manga for his entire arc.
Helping Gash help himself changed his life and made him a better person overall.
If you've done this, you've gotta do Rave Master, underrated as hell and the predecessor to Fairy Tail, which is obviously huge now

You should really look at the trading card game. You actually had a little spellbook and put cards inside it to use for playing as if you were reading spells.
Even if the game was eh it's at it's core the novelty for it is really cool and I think they had printed them all the way until the series ended.
My little brother and I found some at a dollar tree, waaaaaay back, and he still has them in a binder to this day. Never did get a spleebook, though.

What I loved about this dub is that they got a lot of familiar American Cartoon voice actors to do it, which is very rare for anime.
i too thought the show was stupid when i saw the promo commercials as a kid. i watched the first episode just to make fun of it but ended up LOVING the show. it was my FAVORITE anime as a kid and the anime that got me into animes. i still love it today and watching some episodes still make me cry

Another anime I'd definitely recommend that never gets appreciated as much as it should is Katekyo Hitman Reborn. Both Reborn and Gash Bell are my favorite animes growing up and are both so underrated, unfortunately.

@@Kobitachi Zatch or Gash Bell is an anime I'd recommend not even finishing the last arc due to it being completely rushed and out of context with the manga. Unfortunately even the ending was changed and near the last like nine episodes the voice actor of Zatch is changed as well. I've watched all of 150 episodes but I would only only rewatch until like the last fifteen or ten episodes in the last arc because of how much they changed it, it was a really big disappointment overall going through 100+ episodes only for it to rush one of the best/important arcs of the whole story. Also you can easily skip the filler episodes as they don't tie anything into the story but some filler episodes are quite funny since Gash makes it enjoyable.
@@Kobitachi I'd still say watch it because even though the last arc is really bad the rest of the arcs are still done pretty good and everything is done not nearly as exact as the manga but close enough compared to the last arc.

The ending to the manga was about as perfect an ending as you could hope for. to this day i feel like this manga subconsciously sets my standards in a lot of categories
Words can’t describe how much I love this show and that it’s THE most underrated anime ever. I watched this show ever since it came out on Toonami and it quickly became my favorite show and still is to this day. The values, character growth, and emotional moments helped me grow as a person throughout the years. I agree with you man that at first Kanchome and Folgore can be dumb characters but when I read their final character arc in the manga they quickly became one of my favorite pairs in the series. Even the in between world arc in the anime is some of the best filler in any anime. I’m so glad someone else made a video dedicated to this show and I really hope that they make a second anime adaptation and they bring the new digital version on the manga here in North America. Please guys give this anime a watch 🙏🏼
I will buy every chapter! I've never gone above buying a 12 volume manga, but this could be 100 volumes and I would buy it all, I adore this show and the manga was just incredible. Everyone's final character arcs going into the final battle still brings tears to my eyes, that deserves to be adapted into anime form. If Japan won't do it, one day I will become wealthy and invest all of my money into making this happen. Number 1 to do if I win the lottery! This and a full Spice and Wolf adaptation

Zatch Bell is still one of my all time favorite anime. It was the first anime I recognized as an anime and really got into. Years after it's been off air, I have a few hundred zatch bell trading cards from Japan and a whole bunch of Zatch Bell keychains. It'll always be one of the first series I recommend to people.
I never got over the fact that Zatch is voiced by Jimmy Neutron.

Even in Japanese, that season actually diverged from the Manga's events, and then ended without adapting the following arc, so you are better off just resuming from the manga anyways (For reference, the start of that final anime season is Volume 18 in the manga, with the divergence point being episode 138/Chapter 212). Just hearing Steve Blum voice the Toonami host just gave me nostalgia overload
The English dub was great. When it ran out of episodes I switched over to the sub and it was a little off putting at first, but still really good if you can look past the cultural stuff that doesn't really translate well over here like the looking up girl's skirts gags.
The big problem was that the anime basically changed the Faudo Arc's second half and cut out the final arc entirely, which never gave the series the ending it deserved. There's no resolution for any of the teams we met along the way, including Zatch and Kiyo.
As soon as I heard the anime wasn't "The true ending", I started the manga from chapter 211, which is where the big changes start to happen. I'm not really even a fan of manga, but this was super good and I'd definitely recommend all fans of Zatch Bell read it. It gives the series and all the characters we met along the way a satisfying (and pretty fucking epic) conclusion.
I believe the reason for that is the author at the time broke his hand so he couldn't draw for a few months and the anime was closing on the manga's chapters. Sadly, they had to make do with the anime original ending route.
This is before anime companies doing breaks on anime, like MHA, so not to add filler and keep it close to the original source material.
Still, I love this show.

I was always reluctant to watch Zatch Bell because of how I heard the anime didn't have any ending because of what happened to the author. Reading your post though it sounds like it just has a different (yet unsatisfying) ending compared to the manga?
