This Batwoman, Kate Kane, was actually introduced in Detective Comics #854 and ran to #863. She took over Detective while Batman was missing following Final Crisis. It introduced the character, her complex family history, and her first encounters with Batman. She got her own new 52 series a little over a year later. As far as I can remember, this being 6-7 years ago, nothing from her Detective run was changed when she launched in New 52. It was more in line with Green Lantern, where the story just continued.
ShadowCat you're right. There's non Kate Kane batwoman and then 52 Kate Kane batwoman and then the most known which is the Detective comics/New 52 Kate Kane batwoman. This new rebirth batwoman has retconned certain aspects of her history (detective/new52). Her backstory is a little changed to include the colony stuff so Her father is completely changed. Batman and Batwoman both know who each other are and their family history is played up.

A lot has been retconed actually. Making Jacob Kane a villain, when he is actually a hero and one person whom Kate could rely on when her sister had sort of become a joker and came back.
Kate Kane is a really interesting character and has amazing potential but there's one thing I really don't like and that she's blood related to Bruce. That's one cliche that really drags the character down IMO.
the OG batwoman was created as a sorta GF for batman, because everyone thought batman was gay and a couple with robin, but she at same time she was his aunt i think it was, the modern version (new 52 version is not that diff) is made a lesbian and his cousin instead of aunt
What I heard is that Batwoman and the original Batgirl were created in the 1950's. Frederic Wertham started this war on comic books which almost killed the whole industry. Comic books needed to change to please Frederic Wertham. The main "problem" was that Batman and Robin could be seen as having a gay relationship which. Thus Batwoman and Batgirl were created to counter this. The cool thing is that Batwoman is now written as Lebian. I love that kind of Irony.

See I know some people don't like it but I like the fact that she is related to Bruce. I am close to my cousins and a few of them to me is like a brother or sister. Never understood there weren't more family introduced instead of just parents and siblings. Cousins, uncles and aunts, etc... are still family. Yeah she almost looks like a vampire when In full get up.I don't know If It's just a stylistic choice when they're drawing her or she really does put a lot of make up before suitin' up,but It's quite jarring at time.I don't know how to feel about It.I guess It differentiate her enough of batman and batgirl,that way?
I've been collecting Batman comics for over 30 years. I liked when Detective Comics actually had the investigative process in stories. Having a Bat-family on the periphery is okay, but, try as I might I never felt crazy about this incarnation of Batwoman.

Batwoman was mainly brought in during the 50s because of seduction of the innocent and Kate Kane and Betty Kane were brought in to give Batman and Robin love interests. An updated version was introduced in 52 with a lot of her origin introduced subsequent to that.

Batman: Zero Year was so epic... That is the "canon" start to Batman that I go by... D.O.T.F./Endgame and Zero Year were some of the best Batman stories of all. Ever. Scott Snyder is so good it's not even funny. And James Tynion is like his protégé so to speak, he's completely awesome too, and Detective Comics is showing that, It's my second favorite title in all of Rebirth behind Superman.... and I mean Batman knows this is his family his own cousin so I don't rly think she KNEW she was meant to be infiltrating Batman, she didn't know that was her father's Endgame behind him "training" her.... she didn't know any of that until they found out HE was the head of the colony. And she IS his family, she's not the closest thing he HAS to it, she IS it, she's his first cousin. Any closer relation and she'd be his sister. It's his uncles daughter. His moms brother.
I must admit that I was a HUGEE Batwoman fan. I thought the art style was spectacular but as a batfamily fan I HATED how she was constantly interlinked with supernatural enemies. It was as if she was the Buffy the Vampire Slayer of the bat family and I never thought it made much sense. The whole point of the bat family is they're normal people who usually fight on a much smaller scale. I always wish she had more detective-based, grounded storylines BUT I'm so happy what they're doing with her in Rebirth. I hope the art style is similar to that of the detective comics Batwoman Begins story arc.
Please do something on Batgirl. As it stands, I understand every batfamily's motives and drives besides Tim Drakes, which I'm kind of getting and Batgirl who by my account, just wants to help her father and is the most lack luster I can find so far. I need someone to correct me or give me a reason to like her character. Right now, I like her more as Oracle.
Barbara never really did have a good reason for being Batgirl, Barbara was a teenage girl looking for a thrill and a fantasy when she started, she may had a better reason for being Oracle and maybe now as Batgirl, but not at first. I don't dislike Barbara, but at the same time I find her to be very judgemental and hypocritical of other people, especially to new members who join the Bat Family (especially other female members). Which is why (I understand it's a different universe from Rebirth) I hated her character in Batman Beyond series as she became a bitter, old woman who blamed Bruce and everyone else around her for becoming Batgirl for every misfortune that had happened to her and often took her grudge out on Terry.
She had a Detective Comics run before new52, by Greg Rucka and J H Williams III. A great run that span out of Batman RIP, when Bruce was lost in time. That run was a bit better than the new52 stuff.
Do Dennis O'neil and Denys Cowan run on The Question it's an obscure run but really good it features Batman and Green Arrow also a dream segment with Rorschach in it.
Well, Rob, you got most of it. Since the New52 & Rebirth, I'm sure scrapping Greg Rucka's initial Batwoman is somewhat still intact. Rucka left pretty good nuggets behind for anyone to take the mantle. Williams and Blackman tried to write a fantasy/supernatural thing w/ Batwoman which had it's mishaps but it was an attempt to make the character her own and away from the Bat-family which was a mistake. From what I've read, Batwoman will become more of an international character in her own book. This could work, but the setting for me is too big for a character that has only as Kate Kane has a 10 year history compared to Batman's 75 years of history. We need more character building in Gotham which Tynion is doing swell at. We still know very little which is great, but not enough to expand her widely internationally. I believe Batwoman's setting should remain specific and controlled. Her mission or motivation is "war on war?" The slogan itself is too abstract and unrealistic. I liked Rucka's tagline for her which was "I'm no victim" shown in the image at 5:12. Of course, no one wants to hear that but they could have picked a better slogan than "war on war." I see Kate Kane as a changing variable that creates new outcomes in dire situations. In most wars, that's how a lot of them are won in variables. ! She is no James Bond, her character is specific. It feels like they want to make her a spy. A superhero crime-thriller is not a bad idea, but the theme has to be solid and believable which means almost becoming a little too political. Sometimes, becoming a little too dead on the nose for some people. I"m interested in where Marguerite Bennett will take it. Plotting has to be good and tight to tell this kind of story. Rob, thanks for taking the time to do this issue of Batwoman Begins. For some fans like me, it was a snore and a bit too much plot dialogue which Tynion does at times suffer from in his writing.

Batwoman Rebirth, Detective Comics Rebirth Vol 4, nor any new DC Rebirth comics for that matter are retconning Batwoman's New 52 stories. The writers of Batwoman Rebirth stated as such, although its not a surprise since DC has tried to avoid retcons and continuity errors since the New 52. They are just showing the times before and in-between the stories told in her New 52 run of comics, so all the stuff established in the New 52 comic run of Batwoman is still cannon. As a fan of the New 52 Batwoman comics I'll be picking up Batwoman Rebirth to see how it turns out.
Srry rob ur wrong on a few points. Kane's bat army is made so each person could be a batman army but tht they liked the way batman had a hold on his city and how he kept it in check except for a few points. They also didn't take his tech. They stole super villain tech. If u read nightwing and the outlaws u see KGB finds their arsenal. And also he trained his daughter to replace batman when they would remove him.
My problem with the new 52 batwoman comics like the rest of the batman comics is they try to carry over things from pre-flashpoint, hen told us thawe should magically forget anything ever happened and it all in the past. For me Batwoman became a major player during battle for the cowl and was super important during batman inc. new 52 she doesn't serve much of a purpose anymore because they jerry rig batman into everything to try and sell books. For a while she was taking on worldwide terrorism, and in my opinion she should have been the lead on the leviathan arc with the rest of the family supporting her.
Kathy Kane and Kate Kane are different characters. Kathy Kane is Batwoman I from the late 50s/early 60s. Kate Kate is Batwoman II that was introduced with a 5 issue mini series. And Kate Kane worked with Bette Kane as Bat-Girl who later became Flamebird. Barbara Gordon was introduced in the late 1960s as Batgirl. Further Kathy Kane is Bruce Wayne's Aunt, married to an Uncle on his mother's side. Bette and Kate Kane are also related to Bruce Wayne as cousins, but we're not sure exactly that the relationship is. ------------- The whole "Batwoman is awesome" is complete bullshit in accordance with everything we know about the DC world. No matter how good her natural talent is she should be nowhere near the fighting capabilities of any of the others in the Batfamily. And she isn't smart enough to figure out that Batman is Bruce Wayne nor is Batman that stupid nor would he actually walk with said limp, So yet another bad Batwoman comic v.v
I don't know why exactly, but I really dislike Batwoman (her appearance/look is great, but her character itself...), maybe because she strikes me as a genderbendered Batman, which she isn't, I know that, but I guess you can't like every character, it's just a shame that reading the 'tec comic isn't as enjoyable as it should be, sadly. So I hope that she kinda leads this new team in the far future, while Batman can do something else, with others. I am a fairly new reader, just started months ago with the Rebirth titles and then read older comics (new52 stuff) and especially Batman (even the older than new52 stuff). So when I started to read Detective Rebirth, I was looking for more Batman stories, since Batman Rebirth, the solo title, is focussing a lot on its life recently, which is fantastic to be honestly. I also skipped through the next issues at dc wikia and it looks like Batwoman and the team are going to stick for a while, well, can't love every comic. Guess I have to wait a bit more before that changes at all.
I am becoming a bit underwhelmed by the stories dealing with the Bat-Family since the last one you posted. Nightwing is fun, he is his own story, not really Bat Family anymore, but this makes -two- members of the bat family, with ambiguous or outright hostile to Batman goals. This makes it a bit easy fodder to see where it is going. It almost feels like they are trying to pull a Hydra Captain America thing here.
Hello Rob, I'm fairly new to the comic scene. For the longest time, I've been seeing scans of the Bat Family together (I.E. Batgirl, Batwoman, Jason Todd). Given their individual backstories and differing personalities, this intrigues me to a great degree. Unfortunately, not only do I not know where to start reading, but I don't know what comic this takes place in. Given the quality of the art within those scans, I could only assume that it was within the New 52. Could it be Batman Incorporated, or something else? Anyway, I would love for you to make a video going over the Bat family and how they essentially became a team. (For reference, within one of those scans I saw, Bat Woman took a crack at Jason Todd upon first meeting him.)

Can you talk about the progress of Luke Skywalker's growth in the force in the comics, once we get closer to the beginning of Empire? From what I know, Luke's progress was show when he used the force to retrieve his lightsaber in the wampa cave. I hope they don't ruin the series by giving him powers we know he should not be able to use until after he meets Yoda at the very least.

J910 1 she puts on makeup and a wig to hide her identity. She's got normal skin and short hair when she's not suited up.

Please do something on Batgirl. As it stands, I understand every batfamily's motives and drives besides Tim Drakes, which I'm kind of getting and Batgirl who by my account, just wants to help her father and is the most lack luster I can find so far. I need someone to correct me or give me a reason to like her character. Right now, I like her more as Oracle.
Barbara never really did have a good reason for being Batgirl, Barbara was a teenage girl looking for a thrill and a fantasy when she started, she may had a better reason for being Oracle and maybe now as Batgirl, but not at first.
I don't dislike Barbara, but at the same time I find her to be very judgemental and hypocritical of other people, especially to new members who join the Bat Family (especially other female members). Which is why (I understand it's a different universe from Rebirth) I hated her character in Batman Beyond series as she became a bitter, old woman who blamed Bruce and everyone else around her for becoming Batgirl for every misfortune that had happened to her and often took her grudge out on Terry.
She had a Detective Comics run before new52, by Greg Rucka and J H Williams III. A great run that span out of Batman RIP, when Bruce was lost in time. That run was a bit better than the new52 stuff.
Do Dennis O'neil and Denys Cowan run on The Question it's an obscure run but really good it features Batman and Green Arrow also a dream segment with Rorschach in it.

Well, Rob, you got most of it. Since the New52 & Rebirth, I'm sure scrapping Greg Rucka's initial Batwoman is somewhat still intact. Rucka left pretty good nuggets behind for anyone to take the mantle. Williams and Blackman tried to write a fantasy/supernatural thing w/ Batwoman which had it's mishaps but it was an attempt to make the character her own and away from the Bat-family which was a mistake.
From what I've read, Batwoman will become more of an international character in her own book. This could work, but the setting for me is too big for a character that has only as Kate Kane has a 10 year history compared to Batman's 75 years of history. We need more character building in Gotham which Tynion is doing swell at. We still know very little which is great, but not enough to expand her widely internationally. I believe Batwoman's setting should remain specific and controlled. Her mission or motivation is "war on war?" The slogan itself is too abstract and unrealistic. I liked Rucka's tagline for her which was "I'm no victim" shown in the image at 5:12. Of course, no one wants to hear that but they could have picked a better slogan than "war on war." I see Kate Kane as a changing variable that creates new outcomes in dire situations. In most wars, that's how a lot of them are won in variables. !
She is no James Bond, her character is specific. It feels like they want to make her a spy. A superhero crime-thriller is not a bad idea, but the theme has to be solid and believable which means almost becoming a little too political. Sometimes, becoming a little too dead on the nose for some people. I"m interested in where Marguerite Bennett will take it. Plotting has to be good and tight to tell this kind of story.
Rob, thanks for taking the time to do this issue of Batwoman Begins. For some fans like me, it was a snore and a bit too much plot dialogue which Tynion does at times suffer from in his writing.

Batwoman Rebirth, Detective Comics Rebirth Vol 4, nor any new DC Rebirth comics for that matter are retconning Batwoman's New 52 stories. The writers of Batwoman Rebirth stated as such, although its not a surprise since DC has tried to avoid retcons and continuity errors since the New 52. They are just showing the times before and in-between the stories told in her New 52 run of comics, so all the stuff established in the New 52 comic run of Batwoman is still cannon. As a fan of the New 52 Batwoman comics I'll be picking up Batwoman Rebirth to see how it turns out.

Srry rob ur wrong on a few points. Kane's bat army is made so each person could be a batman army but tht they liked the way batman had a hold on his city and how he kept it in check except for a few points. They also didn't take his tech. They stole super villain tech. If u read nightwing and the outlaws u see KGB finds their arsenal. And also he trained his daughter to replace batman when they would remove him.
My problem with the new 52 batwoman comics like the rest of the batman comics is they try to carry over things from pre-flashpoint, hen told us thawe should magically forget anything ever happened and it all in the past. For me Batwoman became a major player during battle for the cowl and was super important during batman inc. new 52 she doesn't serve much of a purpose anymore because they jerry rig batman into everything to try and sell books. For a while she was taking on worldwide terrorism, and in my opinion she should have been the lead on the leviathan arc with the rest of the family supporting her.

Kathy Kane and Kate Kane are different characters.
Kathy Kane is Batwoman I from the late 50s/early 60s.
Kate Kate is Batwoman II that was introduced with a 5 issue mini series.
And Kate Kane worked with Bette Kane as Bat-Girl who later became Flamebird.
Barbara Gordon was introduced in the late 1960s as Batgirl.
Further Kathy Kane is Bruce Wayne's Aunt, married to an Uncle on his mother's side.
Bette and Kate Kane are also related to Bruce Wayne as cousins, but we're not sure exactly that the relationship is.

The whole "Batwoman is awesome" is complete bullshit in accordance with everything we know about the DC world. No matter how good her natural talent is she should be nowhere near the fighting capabilities of any of the others in the Batfamily. And she isn't smart enough to figure out that Batman is Bruce Wayne nor is Batman that stupid nor would he actually walk with said limp, So yet another bad Batwoman comic v.v
I don't know why exactly, but I really dislike Batwoman (her appearance/look is great, but her character itself...), maybe because she strikes me as a genderbendered Batman, which she isn't, I know that, but I guess you can't like every character, it's just a shame that reading the 'tec comic isn't as enjoyable as it should be, sadly. So I hope that she kinda leads this new team in the far future, while Batman can do something else, with others.
I am a fairly new reader, just started months ago with the Rebirth titles and then read older comics (new52 stuff) and especially Batman (even the older than new52 stuff). So when I started to read Detective Rebirth, I was looking for more Batman stories, since Batman Rebirth, the solo title, is focussing a lot on its life recently, which is fantastic to be honestly. I also skipped through the next issues at dc wikia and it looks like Batwoman and the team are going to stick for a while, well, can't love every comic. Guess I have to wait a bit more before that changes at all.

I am becoming a bit underwhelmed by the stories dealing with the Bat-Family since the last one you posted. Nightwing is fun, he is his own story, not really Bat Family anymore, but this makes -two- members of the bat family, with ambiguous or outright hostile to Batman goals. This makes it a bit easy fodder to see where it is going. It almost feels like they are trying to pull a Hydra Captain America thing here.

I'm fairly new to the comic scene. For the longest time, I've been seeing scans of the Bat Family together (I.E. Batgirl, Batwoman, Jason Todd). Given their individual backstories and differing personalities, this intrigues me to a great degree. Unfortunately, not only do I not know where to start reading, but I don't know what comic this takes place in. Given the quality of the art within those scans, I could only assume that it was within the New 52. Could it be Batman Incorporated, or something else? Anyway, I would love for you to make a video going over the Bat family and how they essentially became a team.
(For reference, within one of those scans I saw, Bat Woman took a crack at Jason Todd upon first meeting him.)

Can you talk about the progress of Luke Skywalker's growth in the force in the comics, once we get closer to the beginning of Empire? From what I know, Luke's progress was show when he used the force to retrieve his lightsaber in the wampa cave. I hope they don't ruin the series by giving him powers we know he should not be able to use until after he meets Yoda at the very least.
