But Misha, three dim Pythagoras is a consequence of a two dim Pythagoras, which is a projection picture you show (answering the first question) but SO(2) is abelian, so where is pain?

Pick an axis and angle to represent a rotation and attempt to convert that into a rotation matrix. The end result looks like a mess.
