  • Amazingly, a baby with an obese surrogate mother and a thin biological mom may harbor a greater risk of becoming obese than a baby with a slim surrogate mom and a heavy biological mom.
A few years ago, I had a video about The Best Diet for Weight Loss and Disease Prevention (nutritionfacts.org/video/the-.... But what triggered the whole obesity epidemic to begin with? There are a multitude of factors, and I covered many of them in my 11-video series on the epidemic:
    • The Role of Diet vs. Exercise in the Obesity Epidemic (nutritionfacts.org/video/the-r...)
    • The Role of Genes in the Obesity Epidemic (nutritionfacts.org/topics/the...)
    • The Thrifty Gene Theory: Survival of the Fattest (nutritionfacts.org/video/the-t...)
    • Cut the Calorie-Rich-And-Processed Foods (nutritionfacts.org/video/cut-t...)
    • The Role of Processed Foods in the Obesity Epidemic (nutritionfacts.org/video/the-r...)
    • The Role of Taxpayer Subsidies in the Obesity Epidemic (nutritionfacts.org/video/the-r...)
    • The Role of Marketing in the Obesity Epidemic (nutritionfacts.org/video/the-r...)
    • The Role of Food Advertisements in the Obesity Epidemic (nutritionfacts.org/video/the-r...)
    • The Role of Personal Responsibility in the Obesity Epidemic (nutritionfacts.org/video/the-r...)
    • The Role of Corporate Influence in the Obesity Epidemic (nutritionfacts.org/video/the-r...)
    • The Role of the Toxic Food Environment in the Obesity Epidemic (nutritionfacts.org/video/the-r...)
There are other ways by which we are what our moms ate:
    • Heart Disease May Start in the Womb (nutritionfacts.org/video/hear...)
    • Maternal Diet May Affect Stress Responses in Children (nutritionfacts.org/video/mate...)
    • The Effect of Animal Protein on Stress Hormones, Testosterone, and Pregnancy (nutritionfacts.org/video/the-...)

My mom gained a lot of weight while pregnant with me and i was a big baby and overweight as a kid. I took it into my own hands to start working out and eating healthy. Its never too late to change your health.

I'm on the same boat. To make things worse, *vitamin deficiencies* and *SMOKING* 🚬 was also in her way of life.
She helds me responsible for her teeth rotting during pregnancy.
And we eat not much else but revived carbs in childhood... Go figure.

Both of my children were born after a 110-pound weight loss due to gastric bypass. They both became obese. However, I was still obese at that point. It was many years before I understood nutrition. Thanks for the video.

My mum, 4'9 and 70 lbs her whole life gave birth to three huge babies, me (4th child) being the only small baby. All but me, grew up obese. I was 90 lbs, had a normal sized baby (20 lbs) but she is a very large woman.

I read studies (but a while ago and don't have them off hand) that your family history puts its mark on your epigenetics az least 4 generations back. So how your grandmas and grandpas, but even great grandparent did had an effect on you to some degree.
It was quite a shocking revelation for me reading that when it came out, and followed up later.

Yes, the white pith is where most of the bioflavonoids from citrus are stored. So, eating the pith as well as the inner fruit is very healthy.

Bottom line: genetics don't really play a role in most health issues, including obesity. It's what is served every day at breakfast, lunch and dinner (and in between snacks). Introducing babies to veggies, beans, grains and fruit will develop their tastebuds for their entire lives. These are foods that can be eaten in large quantities without worrying about weight gain, especially if kids are active (and sedentary only to read books lol)! It's the family menu that determines obesity running in families, not genetics.

I wouldn't say that as genetics still play a role. But in much much less weight than previously thought.
If you don't carry the genes to some enzymes you cannot produce them however you love your life, or if you have more copies of a gene it will obviously have a much greater effect, regardless of your lifestyle.
But for the most part you are right.

I love you , Dr. Greger, and I follow you. I have your books. Why do modern men of scientist follow Darwin's theory, a man from the Victorian era? That confuses me so much. I still ❤you. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
