The 144,000 are not mention just two places in the Bible. They are named by number two places in Revelation in 14: 1-5 and 12 and Revelation 7:3-8 , but they are also found in Zephaniah 3:13 listed as the remnant of Israel with the same characteristics as the 144,000. “ The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall I deceitful tongue be found in their mouth : for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.” In other words they reflect Christ’s character as seen in First Peter 2:22-23, and Isaiah 53:9

Hi Sisdac. No, the number 144,000 does NOT have to mean a definite, precise number. Revelation is apocalyptic literature, and most of it is symbolic. No one believes the 4 horsemen are real men on real horses, or the beast is a weird monster with 7 heads and 10 horns! Mark is correct to say the number 144,000 is symbolic, but wrong to say these people are not Jews, but 'all the redeemed people of God'. In the Bible, 12 symbolizes completeness, so 12 x 12,000 from each tribe indicates the complete number of Jews, or Israel as a whole. If, as I suspect, the mysterious woman of Rev.12 is Israel, which seems the most likely identification, then she is protected and cared for in the desert - whatever that turns out to mean in practice - out of reach of the dragon/Satan.

Totally agree. Most of the time, 144 is explained as 12*12. What I learned from the Bible is 24 elders represent 12 sons/tribes of Jacob/Israel in OT and 12 disciples of Jesus in NT.

That's right... John "heard" the number... and "saw" them too. Sister White records by God's Inspiration that they have their NAMES written on stone in the Heavenly Sanctuary. They are real people. The sabbath were a shadow leading to Christ and he was the END of the law Romans 10:4. Romans 7:6. Ephesians 2:13-15. Colossians 2:13-15. Galatians 4:10-11. After the death of Jesus his apostles at no time commanded sabbath observance. The sabbath was not included as a Christian requirement at Acts 15:28-29.

I was thought as a Sda, growing up, that the 144, 000, were those saints that will be living, when Jesus comes. They will have went through Jacob's Time of Trouble. Yes, they have the Character of Jesus, but also each person that will be saved, will have characteristics of the 12 tribes of Israel. We will go through one of the gates in heaven. I guess this is the second school of thought that was also, being taught. I kinda embraced it was literal, because it was taught that John saw another number which no man could number. For those that are hung on the Sabbath being Saturday, my question is, What do we do with this Bible verse: Colossians 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. Bible says Sabbath is a day of rest and only in Christ do we find true rest, and Christ has become our Sabbath. So why are we killing ourselves on a particular physical day? 7th day is symbolic of the spiritual day of rest which we can only enter in Christ, I don't know why even Bible scholars miss this when it is so simple to understand.
The Sabbath is Saturday, it always has been and has never changed. Christians meet and worship on Sunday in commemoration of the resurrection. What's the big deal? Christians are not Jews, and are not bound by Jewish tradition or Old Covenant law. Jesus, in the last supper, instituted a New Covenant.

God gave a specific number (144,000) which leads me to believe it is literal. He could have said there were some, many, a great amount, etc. Just like with the 'great multitude '. But there was a exact number recorded. Also, just because we don't know today who would belong to what tribe doesn't mean that God doesn't know.
Rev 7 talks about this group going through the time of trouble rev 14 talks about them that are up in heaven standing before the throne of God for they have been taken to heaven with those who have been resurrected when King Jesus at his second coming
I believe this group, the 144,000 will be the first batch of saints that God will be taken to heaven after the tribulation. I believe they are of the Jewish lines who were taken from different parts of the world. The passage that says “being the *FIRSTFRUITS* unto God and to the Lamb”(14:4) suggests that they are Israelites in as much as Jewish privilege to salvation is concerned; as “of the Jew *FIRST,* and also of the Gentile”(Romans 2:9-10); and also for salvation (Romans 1:9), they are the *FIRSTFRUITS* to obtain God’s salvation.

Brother Mark, the seal of God is not the Sabbath..Jesus Christ bore the seal of God: “On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval” (John 6:27). In all my hearing, I haven't heard a good saying about the 144000... I think that no one will know yet or ever... No one should really worry about them, just take what you get in the Revelation. We should just preach about the gospel and the saving of souls... It won't save us to know about them. Let's place our concentration on JESUS CHRIST the Saviour...

Only thing I am not sure is whether that 144,000 is literal number or not. Whether a number is literal or a symbol is depending on the context of that scripture. We cannot make one scripture symbol because the others are symbol, or literal because the others are literal. We must also understand God's purpose for sealing the 144,000 before making interpretation. Reason why he is sealing them. Because interpretation must go along with the purpose.
THE CRY OF THE NOISE OF THE FISHGATE is also where the 144000 are written in scripture. The verse telling that the 144000 shall be sealed by TELLING THE VISION from JESUS

At the time I’m watching this you happen to have 144K subscribers! Lol The entire SDA conference heads need to meet and come to one understanding of this topic. Everybody giving their own understanding is not a good look! I think this a trick of the enemy to have us focused on something that’s not relevant to our salvation. Still it’s natural to ask. I’ve gotten so many different answers to this question in my early studies that I just gave up on it. I personally believe it’s a literal number that will lead the saints that are sealed and still alive into safety as Moses and Aaron did. I suppose they will be scattered all over world miraculously leading huge groups of people to safety during the years of tribulation.

there is a following passage where an uncountable people were clothed in clean robes from nations and languages… in general, God knows how many people were saved. but we should focus on believing in JESUS and following His word for salvation…!!!
I’m leaning toward the theory that the 144,000 are the children 0-2 years old that king Herod had slain when trying to kill Jesus. They were from the 12 tribes, they were virgins, they were the first fruits.... This is not a heaven or hell issue so I’m not looking to argue. I’m still learning the Bible and I find it fascinating!

@@Tam___ The verse keep the commandments is the covenant made with Jews which is everlasting. During the tribulation Christians will not be here to keep the 10 commandments to be saved. We are saved by faith alone and we are not lost for not keeping the least nor the greatest of the commandments. Matthew Jesus was preaching to Jews, the old covenant was made with them, not Gentiles. The disciples were commanded to go teach the lost sheep of Israel, not the Gentiles. New testament Galations teaches you can either serve the law of Moses or be reborn and die to that law. Read Galations 4 and 5. I love Jesus with all my heart and I was never convicted in my heart to keep the Sabbath. Does that mean I don't love Jesus? Go read Romans 7 and 8. The Bible is the word of God, so how come some passages teaches to be lead by the Spirit and not live by the Law and others says the opposite? During great tribulation they will have to keep the law and have faith and that law/decalogue/covenant was made with the and not their forefathers. Go read Exodus 19:3-6, Exodus 31:12-18, Deut 4:13, Deut 9:10-11, Deut 9:15, Exodus 32:15. Ask yourself who did God make the covenant with, what was the covenant, and why was the covenant given. Read Deut 5:1-3, Neh 9:23-14, Jer 31:31-34. Read 2 Cor 3 to 4. (You will realize reading Moses puts a veil on your heart.) We follow Jesus, not the Law he had to follow due to being under the old covenant as a Jew. He had to fulfill it by dieing on the cross. Christians died with Him on the cross. Jews did not, they don't believe that, thus Jesus turned away from them and to the Gentiles temporarily. Go read Galations 3. Rev 7:3 “...and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His name and the name of His Father written on their foreheads.” Rev 14:1 Seems the seal of the 144,000 has everything to do with the name of His father.

This is the very reason we should read and study our bible. Not everything is symbolic in Revelation. The angels are not symbolic. The 144,000 are not symbolic. God knows the 12,000 He will select and mark from the listed tribe of Isreal.
The amazing thing about God is that He makes it so many things are both symbolic and literal; the union of the spiritual and the physical. But yes, the 144,000 will be from the literal tribes of Israel, descended from those bloodlines; only God knows where those individuals are today, but He will make known to these individuals exactly who they are.

There's a background story of the 144,000 written in the Bible that portraits around their dyer situation, their sin or sins, and their recognition of seeking God. The Bible has indicated like from the book of Zachariah or from other books of the old testament as well as new testament, that in some way the 144,000 are engaged in a fight or battle. If it weren't for all the church confusion, in this Last & Wickedest Generation it would be fairly easy for a Bible Studier to understand precisely who the 144,000 "WERE". *Revelation 7:4 says, "And I heard the number of them which WERE sealed: and there WERE sealed a hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel." The word: "WERE" is key here. John the Revelator is clearly looking back on the Number of First Fruits that Christ resurrected at His First Coming. *Matthew 27:52-53, "And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many". The 144,000 consisted of Tribal Israelites. And since Tribal Israel no longer exists then no one should even be looking for an End Time 144,000 anyway. Further, Revelation 7:9-16 speaks of the next resurrection to take place, later on, "AFTER" (vs 9) the Resurrection of the 144,000. It is the End Time Harvest of the Great Multitude that will be resurrected at the Time of Christ's Second Coming. No were, in these verses (9-16), does John the Revelator use the word: "WERE" ...as he did when speaking about the 144,000. But, unlike the 144,000, John could not document the number/count of the Great Multitude because they consist of a resurrection that had not taken place yet. Thus, no man could number/count them, yet, as they could the 144,000 ...whom "WERE" already sealed & resurrected before John's Patmos Experience (around A.D.90).

The 144,000 are not mention just two places in the Bible. They are named by number two places in Revelation in 14: 1-5 and 12 and Revelation 7:3-8 , but they are also found in Zephaniah 3:13 listed as the remnant of Israel with the same characteristics as the 144,000. “ The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall I deceitful tongue be found in their mouth : for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.” In other words they reflect Christ’s character as seen in First Peter 2:22-23, and Isaiah 53:9

Hi Sisdac. No, the number 144,000 does NOT have to mean a definite, precise number. Revelation is apocalyptic literature, and most of it is symbolic. No one believes the 4 horsemen are real men on real horses, or the beast is a weird monster with 7 heads and 10 horns! Mark is correct to say the number 144,000 is symbolic, but wrong to say these people are not Jews, but 'all the redeemed people of God'. In the Bible, 12 symbolizes completeness, so 12 x 12,000 from each tribe indicates the complete number of Jews, or Israel as a whole. If, as I suspect, the mysterious woman of Rev.12 is Israel, which seems the most likely identification, then she is protected and cared for in the desert - whatever that turns out to mean in practice - out of reach of the dragon/Satan.

The great multitude John sees from vs.9 onwards are worshipping in heaven, and they must be Christians because they 'have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.' They are 'from every nation, tribe, people and language', and of course, that would include Jews who accept Yeshua (Jesus) as their Messiah and Saviour. Vs.14 should be translated 'These are they who ARE COMING OUT of the great tribulation', NOT 'have come out' - the Greek is present continuous tense. It's as though John sees a steady stream of courageous saints, no doubt many of them martyrs, arriving in glory.
As I've said elsewhere, I believe the Jews are sealed as a mark of ownership, and so provided with some form of protection during the tribulation, see Rev.9:4 and chapter 12. (Rev.9:4 applies to Jews and Christians, the latter being sealed by the Holy Spirit, see Eph.1:13))

Totally agree. Most of the time, 144 is explained as 12*12. What I learned from the Bible is 24 elders represent 12 sons/tribes of Jacob/Israel in OT and 12 disciples of Jesus in NT.

So the 144,000 is LITERAL number just like the 12 Apostle is a LITERAL number but it doesn't mean that they are the only ones received the Holy Ghost. In Acts 2 there are about 120 souls received the Holy Ghost.

That's right... John "heard" the number... and "saw" them too. Sister White records by God's Inspiration that they have their NAMES written on stone in the Heavenly Sanctuary. They are real people. Real striving saints who replace the SDA fallen leaders who have guided the church right back into the world and who have taught the sheep to reject His prophets.

The sabbath were a shadow leading to Christ and he was the END of the law Romans 10:4. Romans 7:6. Ephesians 2:13-15. Colossians 2:13-15. Galatians 4:10-11. After the death of Jesus his apostles at no time commanded sabbath observance. The sabbath was not included as a Christian requirement at Acts 15:28-29.

I was thought as a Sda, growing up, that the 144, 000, were those saints that will be living, when Jesus comes. They will have went through Jacob's Time of Trouble. Yes, they have the Character of Jesus, but also each person that will be saved, will have characteristics of the 12 tribes of Israel. We will go through one of the gates in heaven. I guess this is the second school of thought that was also, being taught. I kinda embraced it was literal, because it was taught that John saw another number which no man could number. For those that are hung on the Sabbath being Saturday, my question is, What do we do with this Bible verse:
Colossians 2:16
Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
Bible says Sabbath is a day of rest and only in Christ do we find true rest, and Christ has become our Sabbath. So why are we killing ourselves on a particular physical day?
7th day is symbolic of the spiritual day of rest which we can only enter in Christ, I don't know why even Bible scholars miss this when it is so simple to understand.
It's not about the day its about authority
The Sabbath is Saturday, it always has been and has never changed. Christians meet and worship on Sunday in commemoration of the resurrection. What's the big deal? Christians are not Jews, and are not bound by Jewish tradition or Old Covenant law. Jesus, in the last supper, instituted a New Covenant.

God gave a specific number (144,000) which leads me to believe it is literal. He could have said there were some, many, a great amount, etc. Just like with the 'great multitude '. But there was a exact number recorded. Also, just because we don't know today who would belong to what tribe doesn't mean that God doesn't know.
Kimmm, more important than if it’s literal or symbolic is the characteristic of the 144,000. Let us by God’s grace and help possess those traits.

I believe this group, the 144,000 will be the first batch of saints that God will be taken to heaven after the tribulation. I believe they are of the Jewish lines who were taken from different parts of the world. The passage that says “being the *FIRSTFRUITS* unto God and to the Lamb”(14:4) suggests that they are Israelites in as much as Jewish privilege to salvation is concerned; as “of the Jew *FIRST,* and also of the Gentile”(Romans 2:9-10); and also for salvation (Romans 1:9), they are the *FIRSTFRUITS* to obtain God’s salvation.
They will come forth soon after the 7 year Tribulation starts then be Raptured 1260 days= 3.5 years later.

Brother Mark, the seal of God is not the Sabbath..Jesus Christ bore the seal of God: “On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval” (John 6:27). Those who trust in Jesus also possess the seal of God, which is the Holy Spirit: “You also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. In all my hearing, I haven't heard a good saying about the 144000... I think that no one will know yet or ever... No one should really worry about them, just take what you get in the Revelation. We should just preach about the gospel and the saving of souls... It won't save us to know about them. Let's place our concentration on JESUS CHRIST the Saviour...

Yet he missed the verse that mentions the 144,000 in the Old Testament, Zephaniah 3:13. That group is mentioned at least three places not two , maybe not by number, but by attributes.

The literal Twelve Tribes of Israel cannot be identified today because their bloodline have disintegrated and degenerated during Biblical history.
In 1948 when Israel return to form their nation, many were mix blooded and also those Israelites today in Israel are from one tribe of Judah only because the ten tribes were lost to history long ago during the ancient Assyrian conquest.

Whether a number is literal or a symbol is depending on the context of that scripture. We cannot make one scripture symbol because the others are symbol, or literal because the others are literal.
We must also understand God's purpose for sealing the 144,000 before making interpretation. Reason why he is sealing them. Because interpretation must go along with the purpose.

At the time I’m watching this you happen to have 144K subscribers! Lol The entire SDA conference heads need to meet and come to one understanding of this topic. Everybody giving their own understanding is not a good look! I think this a trick of the enemy to have us focused on something that’s not relevant to our salvation. Still it’s natural to ask. I’ve gotten so many different answers to this question in my early studies that I just gave up on it. I personally believe it’s a literal number that will lead the saints that are sealed and still alive into safety as Moses and Aaron did. I suppose they will be scattered all over world miraculously leading huge groups of people to safety during the years of tribulation.

there is a following passage where an uncountable people were clothed in clean robes from nations and languages… in general, God knows how many people were saved. but we should focus on believing in JESUS and following His word for salvation…!!!

I’m leaning toward the theory that the 144,000 are the children 0-2 years old that king Herod had slain when trying to kill Jesus. They were from the 12 tribes, they were virgins, they were the first fruits....
This is not a heaven or hell issue so I’m not looking to argue. I’m still learning the Bible and I find it fascinating!

11 rules of interpretation

The only thing Difficult about the Bible is that it is a very large book and it will take time to master its contents enough to get a general understanding of it. Read it over and over and practice it's teachings and it will soon become a more simple and practical book.

as often happens in s.d.a. circles, just as we're seeing in this page with thread comments going back & forth, the same debate started in a certain bible class to prepare theologians for work in that part of the country; in fact, it got to the point where the class decided to send 2 representatives of that group (probably 1 for, 1 against the number being symbolic/literal), by horse to EGWs house so as to ask the prophet directly; kinda what would happen in OT times when sending people to samuel, elisha, etc.
they immediately set out by horse & got to white's house @ 6pm; btw, 1 of the 2 chosen became later in life 1 of our GC presidents (maybe during the '60s? don't remember).
as soon as the door was opened, there was sis. white answering the door herself, & they immediately let her know about what happened in class & to let them know her answer so they would head right back before it got too late.

No, the Bible doesn't mention the 144,000 are the ones who resurrected with Christ. That is a different group and we don't know how many were resurrected with Jesus.

For example, Revelation 13:1, "And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy." It talks about a beast with seven heads and ten horns. Obviously this is not literal.

You are wrong in thinking that the witnesses believe that the chosen ones the 144,000 have all been resurrected, there are still a handful here on Earth to be resurrected just before Armagedon starts. @@Tam___ The verse keep the commandments is the covenant made with Jews which is everlasting. During the tribulation Christians will not be here to keep the 10 commandments to be saved. We are saved by faith alone and we are not lost for not keeping the least nor the greatest of the commandments. Matthew Jesus was preaching to Jews, the old covenant was made with them, not Gentiles. The disciples were commanded to go teach the lost sheep of Israel, not the Gentiles. New testament Galations teaches you can either serve the law of Moses or be reborn and die to that law. During great tribulation they will have to keep the law and have faith and that law/decalogue/covenant was made with the and not their forefathers. Go read Exodus 19:3-6, Exodus 31:12-18, Deut 4:13, Deut 9:10-11, Deut 9:15, Exodus 32:15. Ask yourself who did God make the covenant with, what was the covenant, and why was the covenant given. Read Deut 5:1-3, Neh 9:23-14, Jer 31:31-34. Read 2 Cor 3 to 4. (You will realize reading Moses puts a veil on your heart.) We follow Jesus, not the Law he had to follow due to being under the old covenant as a Jew. He had to fulfill it by dieing on the cross. Christians died with Him on the cross. Jews did not, they don't believe that, thus Jesus turned away from them and to the Gentiles temporarily. Go read Galations 3. Unless it is speaking to a different group of people at a different time period for example Jews during tribulation vs Christians today. How can there bes so many people and souls in Heaven in Revelation 5 before the seals are broken? It shows Christians saved by Jesus blood does not go through that. I recommend write down thes passages read them and reread your own passages and see if you can read you Bible without the veil.

This is the very reason we should read and study our bible. Not everything is symbolic in Revelation. The angels are not symbolic. The 144,000 are not symbolic. God knows the 12,000 He will select and mark from the listed tribe of Isreal.
The amazing thing about God is that He makes it so many things are both symbolic and literal; the union of the spiritual and the physical. But yes, the 144,000 will be from the literal tribes of Israel, descended from those bloodlines; only God knows where those individuals are today, but He will make known to these individuals exactly who they are.

That's not what I'm talking about, even though I do agree with you that they are literal. There's a background story of the 144,000 written in the Bible that portraits around their dyer situation, their sin or sins, and their recognition of seeking God.
The Bible has indicated like from the book of Zachariah or from other books of the old testament as well as new testament, that in some way the 144,000 are engaged in a fight or battle. Like somehow the Bible expressed them to be the rod to break the pots or potters, but I do not fully understand it.

As you aware, the Aaronic Levitical priesthood will be restored soon and there will be a peace treaty and began of daily sacrifice. And abomination of desolation will end this daily sacrifice and exalts himself above everything.
We believers have to flee to mountain before that. I believe this 144k will be selected to lead us through mountains to reach Zion. They will be as lion among the sheeps. They will have certain authority.
Isa 35, 49, 60, Jer 31, Isa 32:15-20 talks about a highway will be formed in the mountains for the remnant to walk. Please test what I'm saying. Blessings.

If it weren't for all the church confusion, in this Last & Wickedest Generation it would be fairly easy for a Bible Studier to understand precisely who the 144,000 "WERE".
*Revelation 7:4 says, "And I heard the number of them which WERE sealed: and there WERE sealed a hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel."
The word: "WERE" is key here. John the Revelator is clearly looking back on the Number of First Fruits that Christ resurrected at His First Coming.
*Matthew 27:52-53, "And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared
unto many".
The 144,000 consisted of Tribal Israelites. And since Tribal Israel no longer exists then no one should even be looking for an End Time 144,000 anyway. Further, Revelation 7:9-16 speaks of the next resurrection to take place, later on, "AFTER" (vs 9) the Resurrection of the 144,000. It is the End Time Harvest of the Great Multitude that will be resurrected at the Time of Christ's Second Coming. No were, in these verses (9-16), does John the Revelator use the word: "WERE" ...as he did when speaking about the 144,000. But, unlike the 144,000, John could not document the number/count of the Great Multitude because they consist of a resurrection that had not taken place yet. Thus, no man could number/count them, yet, as they could the 144,000 ...whom "WERE" already sealed & resurrected before John's Patmos Experience (around A.D.90).

Even when the Muslims tried to invade Rome, they reached the Church of St. Paul, only to be defeated by Italian Catholics. Even today Christians throughout the world are being forced to make a decision to bow to the Black Stone, an image of Islam's Empire or get beheaded. But why is this not EVER spoken of at your Sabbath School lessons? Why are we so self centered that this has to do something with keeping the sabbath and the Adventist Church?

During the time of Moses, his prayers were only heard when Moses prayed with his hands extended, making a cross or a "T" shape, similar to the form of Christ when He was crucified.
In 2015, 600 Christian warriors; Iraq's first Christian-only Brigade, the "Tiger Guards" placed the Mark of God (The Cross) on their foreheads, before marching to battle against ISIS who were persecuting the Christians and soon those that are faithful will once again be demanded by God to honor God by wearing His Mark on our Foreheads for ALL to see who we represent.

The seal that the 144,000 will receive for Jesus is two have their carnal nature removed (judged by Jesus) without sin. There are blameless and virgin's They are first fruits of the harvest.

That's his opinion just like we Adventists have different opinions that are diverse. We do not let the bible and the Spirit Of Prophesy lead us. Therein is where our opinions lose out and God's Word reigns supreme. That's the only time we will be united and that the time we'll be the literal 144,000. Not symbolic. Spirit Of Prophesy says it's literal and Revelation as well as Isaiah concurs.

Mark the 144,000 they will preach for 1260 days of the great tribulation. They will be the first to be sealed. They will start preaching the revelation of Jesus Christ after the first four trumpet have sounded. 25% of the earth people will die. 1/3 of earth will be destroyed. I am a Ghanaian, but I am sorry to say American Christians KNOW VERY LITTLE about God and his Salvation, who is the Man Jesus of Nazareth, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin OF THE WORLD. 144000 sealed in the book of life for a reason. Blood up or shut up. Prove you are alive by posting your blood online it is called “blood over intent”. How to: write out on a piece of paper “ I intend to bring heaven to earth for the benefit of all”, put your blood on it, title your video, write in description and tag it “blood over intent”. Do this and your name will be ripped from the book of the dead and placed beside our own in the book of life.
