    "I couldn't care less" pretty much sums up all the artists that have been rolled out since probably 1999 for me. I have heard a catchy song here or there, but no artist that I believe will be long lived or celebrated for decades. People argue that "the day the music died" was when Buddy Holly died, or The Beatles broke up, but for me that day was when the artists became interchangeable and music basically became machine oriented, click tracks, autotune and now MAL assisted. 💔 😢 RIP singer song writers and individuality.

      I couldn’t agree with you more. True musicality is dead, mediocrity is a great way to describe it. When will the Pendulum swing the other way. Todays artists are brands, not naturally talented. Pop sucks, true artists, Rhiannon Gideon, Black Pumas, Courtney Barnett, Carvin Jones, Stephen Sanchez. They are all trying to bring roots music back. We need roots music to keep progressing in the right way. Authentic ❤️. Just one Musician’s Opinion.

    I’ve noticed that she’s on the headlines everywhere. But I think I’ve never heard her sing any song even by accident. So, I think that the music side doesn’t matter at all. The social media is all that matters. Todays ”stars” need some kind of platform or scene to justify their social media status. For some it’s reality TV, for some it’s fashion, for some it’s music. But the main thing is social media.

    Rocket Man. I can not figure out how to count it. What a talent.
    And I'm not a drummer.
    As devil's advocate, isn't reaching Madonna's level what you would be aiming for in the long run?
    Who wouldn't want to reach Elton's level? Stones? Or otherworldly Zep?
    I get what you are saying.
    Hell, I like to get enough talent to play in a bar, and other than selling out the music for that level, separates us practicing musicians from the corporate hype.

      Thanks for watching! It's an interesting question you ask. Personally as a recording artist myself I never wanted more than a dedicated audience I could perform for. I never desired the kind of fame that filled stadiums. All of my favorite artists are regarded as the greatest in pop music history (Beatles, Elton, Bowie, Stones, Pink Floyd etc). All those artists produced music that will still be listened to and celebrated centuries from now. Even though they became so huge they filled stadiums their shear talent and brilliance is what brought them to that level of fame. Today the most mediocre talent can fill stadiums because of the power of marketing and media. All those great artist I mentioned are in a different universe from the people who are famous in music today. In fact, most of what is called "music" today is more the product of clever people using computers to create something that gives the impression of a performance. It's like comparing a McDonalds burger to Filet mignon. Thanks again!

    We have seen lots of athletes & singers suffer from over-exposure or "overkill" through the years (this would make for an interesting video). Taylor seems to carry herself very well and she has, as you said, a very marketable persona. She has a strong positivity. In the world of music, she really does not have a deep catalogue of exceptionally written songs yet no one sells or gets streamed like Taylor. She is charismatic & beautiful yet I can't name one Taylor Swift song despite spending sooo much time listening to music - old & new across many music formats. I take note of and buy music that catches my ear. Her "haters" need to invest their time in more constructive opportunities - become a giver rather than a taker. Enough said. I wish her well but her popularity has clearly transcended her place as a musician as we have seen this happen before.

      Elton John, back in the 70s, stated that there is a place for the "now" of "disposable pop music." He wrote some of these songs and we see Taylor Swift releasing plenty. The difference with Elton and premier songwriters is that they also wrote many exceptional songs with key changes, time signature changes, originality, and instrumental parts with great musicianship. These exceptional songs will continue on as they have for, in some cases, many decades.

    Pop music has always been a separate animal from rock music. What sells is not always "good." Taylor Swift, whether you like her or not, is having her moment right now because she's managed to come up with something that touches an audience. She isn't the first, and certainly won't be the last. As you point out, in 1984 it was Madonna. In 1989, it was New Kids on the Block. For most of the 80s and 90s, it was Michael Jackson. In the late 90s, it was Backstreet Boys. I also think that today's news cycle has created an opportunity for media coverage that doesn't concern politics, and Taylor Swift's timing is right.

    • @JonBlackstone
      @JonBlackstone  6 месяцев назад

      Thanks for watching! I hear your point, but I would argue it’s not exactly accurate. If you look at the highest sales of albums and concert attendance in music between 1964 to about 1980 you’ll discover that the highest selling music was generated by great artists who are celebrated to this day. There were artists such as The carpenters (who were incredibly talented) producing straight up pop music. Simultaneously you had artists like The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Eagles Elton John, Steely Dan who were on the top 40 billboard charts. In other words it wasn’t about “pop” or “rock”. It was simply great art that happened to be appreciated at the time. My view is that ended around 1980 and it’s been more or less a downhill ride from then. If Taylor swift appeared in the 1970s she’d be a teen pop star like Leif Garrett or David Cassidy. Today she’s considered the queen of popular music. I find that terribly sad.

      9 "Bennie and the Jets" Elton John

Yes, I’ve seen her acoustic performances and all the attempts to present her as a legitimate “artist”. But it’s all smoke and mirrors. By the way, in the Nashville music industry it’s been long known that her daddy basically bought her first recording contract. Her dad had the money to pay off record executives to sign her to record deal. That’s why her first deal was so bad for her financially; and that’s why she recorded new versions of her early hits. Because those were truly original creative artists who didn’t need a legion of cultists to defend their legacy.
