I have very happily been living here in Spain for nearly 17 years now and can honestly say that I have Not regretted a single day in living in Spain. Of course there are some problems here but somehow things seem easier to resolve generally. One of the most important things to consider is "post-operative" care. Here in Spain like in many Mediterranean countries, it is the case where care of those recovering from operations or illness are cared for by their families, not so good for a single person and pensioner like me, with no family here. But "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof..."!! I think that a most important thing for foreigners considering moving here, especially "Brits" is to remember that you are moving to a foreign country, with it's own customs, laws and way of life. It Is NOT the "U.K" with Sunshine..!!

@ Very diplomatic of you. That sort of reply probably comes from a naturalised Brit, with whom you wouldn't want any socializacion and whose idioma you already know. 🤣 Keep up trying the language whenever you can. We were young enough on arrival in France to have plenty of hard drive space in our heads to convert school French into fluent French. We got C2 (mastery - me) and C1 (only 2 points lower - Mrs.) in our naturalisation exams because we always worked and socialised with French people (and a handful of Brits), and never together (different professions). Couples second language acquisition is such that one is always better than the other, who tends to rely on the other for letters, e-mails etc. Don't rest on your laurels though. Good luck 🤞🍀. (Avoid Aaaa J's mentalidad like the plague!). Try joining a Spanish club where the interest is a skill YOU have... could be anything.
Bueno mi Amigo , yo he estado aqui en Tenerife desde hace cinco años ... me encanta España y a veces conducimos alredador el entero de España por coche... sigo estudiar la idioma , asi que diculpeme por errores 🇧🇴🏴
You look so good and stress free. The air you breath , the sun you get , the food you eat , the health system you have , the walking with the dog you do ........ Everything is better for a pensioner or retired in Spain. As a spaniard i would encourage all the brittish who want to have a stress free life to come to Spain. Now it´s hard because of Brexit and covid but it is possible to take the residency card if you apply for that. I know many , many, EU citicens who had stablished and had children here. Good luck.

Thank you Joaquin, glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for your comment. I've made some amazing Spanish friends who have made us so welcome, we have problems understanding each other but that's the fun of learning. It's the best thing I've done was to move to Spain. Many thanks for watching :)
@ I wise old Saudi client once told me: "A person whose language you speak can never be your enemy". The truth is, in my experience, you forget what nationality someone has when you speak the same language. It's all enriching.
Now that Brexit has added another layer of difficulty to settling in Spain, British folks who would otherwise find the peace and contentment of life in southern Spain especially may never be able to do so to the detriment of all. This is what freedom is all about and how capricious governments can strip their own citizens of such privilege. Shaun, it's good that you have no regrets about choosing your present lifestyle. Happiness is not having to worry about tomorrow. Apparently, you don't.
Thank you for your videos, I love the laidback presentation approach 😊 My husband and I (early 50’s & late 40’s) are moving to our house in Mazarrón in mid May. I agree, it was much easier to do before Brexit, but luckily we started the residency & driving license process last year before the cut-off date. We’ve been back in the UK since Sept ‘20 to finish work contracts and to sell our UK property, now we’re packed ready to drive out... can’t wait!

My wife and I lived in Spain for 3 years, when we look back before Brexit retiring to Spain would have been great for us. Now, I cant see many retiring to Spain with all the Visa issues ect. Golden Visa is for people with money so that just speaks for itself. I would not invest 500 000 euros in the Spanish market....easy to buy difficult to sell.. Great vlog Sean 👍
@@richardking6066 thanks for the tip and will look into. Brexit was just the worst thing making retirement to the sun a distant dream for all now unless you have pots of cash..for visa entry and health care...Having lived in Spain I know some of the crazy decisions they make and will no doubt regret in time. 👍
I just wish i listened to my husband who said to me 7yrs ago about moving to Spain. I dug my heels in as I wanted to be near my family, but in honesty, i've learnt that him and my kids are my world and moving to Spain back then, would have made our world alot better......Doh!

@@colinesquire2480 Most British immigrants to Spain fail to learn even the basics of Spanish. My Spanish solicitor told me both she and her secretary could always tell the difference between Irish and British. How I enquired Well the British first words are always Good morning/afternoon, Their departing words being Thank you. The Irish, on the other hand, always say, Buenos Dias, and parting words Michael Gracias. So easy to learn Spanish especially in Restaurants. Look at menu in English, then go to same menu in Spanish and order in Spanish. It gets you more generous vaso vino. You know what vaso vino means, I assume
We rent for about 4 months a year and it keeps things simple. The exact location and orientation of your property is crucial . On the Costa del Sol if you buy just 5- 10 miles inland from the sea (usually because its much cheaper ) it can be much colder than the narrow coastal strip as the altitude and mountains combine to create microclimate and they hold the clouds over your head while just down the road at the same time the thin coastal strip is sunny and often 6 or 8 degrees warmer. This is crucial from November to April . Also if your garden or terrace is north facing thats a huge mistake to make when buying or even renting a property during the coolest 5 months. My advice is if you are planning to stay in the cooler months then buy a smaller place on the coast rather than a bigger place inland .

Sold my flat in London in 2003 came out to have a look at the south after many visits north and never went back. Bought a small townhouse outright and furnished it before my money ran out. Out of work in the Catering industry but mostly always been employed. I speak pretty good Spanish and 95% of my numerous friends here are Spanish. No regrets because I came here to enjoy my life not make money.

Many Britishs are returning from Spain with skin cancer where they don't protect themselfs from the Spanish strong sun. Our NHS has to cure them.Spain is too dusty and hot.I lived in Spain for 20 years with the natives Spainish and heard them slagging of the British. So when you go on holiday you think all Spanish are nice people. They're not.
Hi Shaun, many thanks for sharing that. You really put it together and presented it well, interesting and really engaging. I was hoping your audience would enjoy it as much as I was sure to, which was a big part of why the question having thought it through myself quite deeply for a number of years already. Our circumstances are pretty similar in many ways. I will look forward to a face to face chat with you and the Jan’s (I have one as well) and share that detail at some stage. We were booked on a ferry on April 5th 2020 to come and buy a property in the Hondon Valley from a shortlist and explore a bit from a base there. You know what happened there, no ferries! Sure, lots has changed with Brexit and the new rules and we have some extra family commitments here in the U.K. which kinda makes it lucky we couldn’t make the move to be honest, but we will make the move at some stage once those commitments have eased. Money is dwindling (we sold our houses and have been renting expensively on the south coast for far too long) so our villa may turn out to be not quite so magnificent as yours but hey ho, we will have that weather and glorious outdoor lifestyle and the ability to get out and about - COVID permitting. Many thanks again, and I hope that this vid gets watched, thumbed and commented on lots. Keep safe Top Man! 👍

Thank you Kev, glad you enjoyed the video and hopefully answered your question a bit. We have been lucky and took a risk and sold up and moved not knowing within a year the Vote to leave the EU took place. If we still both had jobs in the UK and retired now would we be living here in this villa? Think not but living some where else in Spain maybe. Weather still pants at the moment!!! Many thanks for watching & keep safe :)
@ Hi Shaun. I would have taken that risk too. Sadly at the time, I was in the process of losing half my pension and most of the house to my ex, so had some financial rebuilding to do late in life. Last year, Jan and I sold the houses, pocketed the little we were allowed by U.K. divorce courts and were ready to move. I was going to commute from Alicante to the U.K. one round trip for 3 days a week (cheaper and quicker than Port Solent to Manchester), work from Spain the other 2 and keep the U.K. job (and pension contributions) going. Plans were scuppered as COVID happened and that buying trip was binned, and now my mums and both older brothers health is failing keeping me very busy supporting her. But as I said, we will do it one day, I just hope I am still young and mentally aware enough to realise we actually have by that stage. 😁
Brexit has made it so much harder for people from UK to retire in Spain. It's doable but it costs so much more such that it's only possible for the affluent.

Great topic and video Shaun. Like you we've been out here just over 6 years and, like you, we've struggled to learn Spanish, especially understanding spoken Spanish. There are umptee videos on retiring in Spain on RUclips ,however,I never seem to across any videos of older people that have settled in Senior Living Resorts and hear about their experiences in those resorts. Because of my age(76) I don’t believe that it would suit me buying real estate at this stage of my life, however,a SLR would be more appropriate. It would be of invaluable help to hear of those people that have chosen that path as to whether it was a good move or an immense regret.

In my view the only downside is the difficulty with the language providing residency and driving licence is sorted . The health service is first class if you are legal and a gestor is essential to help with yearly tax issues . If these issues are covered there is no downside in my view after living here 26 years .

Maybe a daft question!.. but is it possible to have your UK pension paid gross(tax free) at source in England...,once you become a Spanish Resident?🤔 Then simply pay tax in Spain of course.😉💰

To be honest Chris, you need to ask a solicitor this question. All I can say Spain & UK had agreement about taxes but now not sure. Many thanks for watching :)
Actually that’s just how it works. Once you advise the UK that you are a fiscal tax resident in Spain, your pension gets converted into euros at source (at the best rate) and is sent to your Spanish bank account or wherever you want it. You then pay tax on it in Spain thru your yearly declaration

Many thanks for your comment Peter and very true, we tend to forget, things run different here, different customs and way of life. Hopefully your comment will be help to others thinking of moving to Spain. Many thanks for watching 👍🇪🇸
Great video! I've never regretted moving to Spain. There are always ups and downs but the most important is following your dream
Thank you Richard, glad you enjoyed the video and glad your living your dream. Many thanks for watching :)
Hi Richard, I wish I could have stayed, but the Grandchildren being back in England was too much for Teresa.

Lovely comment. 👍
@ I wise old Saudi client once told me: "A person whose language you speak can never be your enemy". The truth is, in my experience, you forget what nationality someone has when you speak the same language. It's all enriching.
@@sachasresolve I absolutely agree. Lovely comment. 😍
We’ve been back in the UK since Sept ‘20 to finish work contracts and to sell our UK property, now we’re packed ready to drive out... can’t wait!
Thank you for your comment and just timed it right with the residency & driving license, some people still waiting from last year for theirs. I bet you can't wait to move out once you're sorted in the UK, I know the feeling. Wish you luck in your new life and keep safe :)
@ thank you. We’ve got our resolución paperwork to show we’ve been accepted for residency and our house deeds - I’m glad we took notice of advice to keep a copy in the UK & another in Spain! Hopefully the 2 day travel will go smoothly...
Like you Sean luckily we done it at the right time and got everything sorted in the first year ,love the place and English Spanish and all the other nationalities are so friendly, think we’re always in holiday mode, have a great day 😎
Thank you Malcolm, we are lucky and we are in holiday mode most of the time! Many thanks for watching :)
I retire August 30 here in California. Don't know how long it will take me to settle up on my affairs here, but I would love to be in Spain before the end of 2021. Wish me luck!
Thank you Roy for your comment and wish you luck in your new adventure :)
Sadly for us we don't think this is going to be a possibility for us. We own a business in the UK, modest age of 38 and 40. Plan was to be done and living in the Sierra Nevadas in ten years..now with all this bollocks I really can't see it happening. Sad times we live in....for everybody.
Many thanks for your comment, hopefully in the next 10 years, things we change here. Lovely area the Sierra Nevadas. Many thanks for watching :)
I definitely would do exactly the same as I did 11 years ago, live in Spain
Thank you Barry, glad you're still loving it here in Spain :)
@ I will never go back to the UK
My wife and I lived in Spain for 3 years, when we look back before Brexit retiring to Spain would have been great for us.
Now, I cant see many retiring to Spain with all the Visa issues ect.
Golden Visa is for people with money so that just speaks for itself.
I would not invest 500 000 euros in the Spanish market....easy to buy difficult to sell..
Great vlog Sean 👍
@@jonathanwilkins6071 I believe moving to Portugal is much cheaper and easier - with lower tax-rates too!

Nice video. Exactly what I needed to hear. I’m in the USA and retiring on Aug 30th. Have a few folks to visit first but I’m selling my home, pocketing the equity and traveling until I decide where I want to remain. I’m pretty sure it will be Spain. Keep up the good work in the videos. I find them really useful. Cheers!

Most British immigrants to Spain fail to learn even the basics of Spanish.
My Spanish solicitor told me both she and her secretary could always tell the difference between Irish and British.
How I enquired
Well the British first words are always Good morning/afternoon, Their departing words being Thank you.
Many thanks for your comment Mike, thanks for watching :)
Top video. First time seeing you, it popped up on my feed. I've been here inland of Málaga on the Costa Del Sol for 17 years now, absolutely love it.
Great comment and glad you're living your life. Many thanks for watching :)

Thanks again Shaun. 👍🏼 Hopefully, will be moving out there within the next 18 months. Thank God for a decent NHS pension. I’ve probably mentioned before, that my brother and his wife are already living on B sector. Btw, we’ve just had the coolest April since the 80’s over here.
Thank you Ade, glad you enjoyed the video and good luck with your move in 18 months time. Many thanks for watching, we had some sun yesterday!!! :)
Can understand why you retired in Spain Shaun. Lots of benefits to the move and yes lucky you did the move when you did. Keep learning that Spanish language mate and save on those translator costs. Thanks for sharing the chat mate with a cup of tea. 👍🙏
Thank you Adrian, glad you enjoyed the video - I'm still learning the Spanish!!! Many thanks for watching :)

Great topic and video Shaun. Like you we've been out here just over 6 years and, like you, we've struggled to learn Spanish, especially understanding spoken Spanish. I think that's the biggest downside to living here especially where medical or bureaucratic processes are concerned. Still love the life out here though. The weather has been a bit strange recently but , looking back, this time of year is often changeable and by next month I'm sure we will be seeing a lot more sunshine. Thanks for sharing

I've had a property there for 12 years and now thinking to move there, I retired early 2 years ago. the only thing that really puts me off is having to take driving test lol. Am safe driver but the thought of taking a test in Spanish is too daunting so will probably do six months every year. (2x 90 days) Also the taxes seem higher in Spain than the UK. Good video Thank you.

I have watched several of your very informative videos with the aim of helping would be relocators to Spain.
Thank you Alexander, glad you enjoyed the video. Now with the new requirements this has made it a lot more expensive to obtain visas to live here. I've meet a few people who have got their visa and now need to take a Spanish driving test. I hope to make some more videos on new people moving here but won't be until next year until people have settled in. Many thanks for watching :)
Hi,stumbled across your video.Even with Brexit,it hasn't deterred me from wanting to move from the UK next year. Its a shame the Spanish have seen fit to rise the amount of finance you need for the non lucrative 27k (euros for the 1st year)!..Thanks for the tip about the driving licence, compleyely unaware of that!>

In my view the only downside is the difficulty with the language providing residency and driving licence is sorted . The health service is first class if you are legal and a gestor is essential to help with yearly tax issues . If these issues are covered there is no downside in my view after living here 26 years .

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. Many thanks for watching and your dream will come true 👍🇪🇸
Great video Shaun very informative, Question I have is could you have afforded to come across to Spain now bearing in mind the new restrictions on immigration? Would you and your wife have qualified ? Thanks for the content 👍
Thank you Yogi, glad you enjoyed the video - we would have still qualified for the Visa but it would have effected on what cost of property. Many thanks for watching :)
I still can't believe British people voted for Brexit considering they all want to retire in Spain! 🤦♂️
Many thanks for your comment and thanks for watching :)
Arrogance
A smart man , very wise , you did your homework , go and learn Spanish , u might as well .
Thank you Martin, glad you enjoyed the video. I'm learning the Spanish - many thanks for watching :)
I think the driving test 🤔 could be a bit daunting shaun 🤔 stay safe me old mucker
In Costa del Sol I've seen one or two driving schools that give their lessons in English and I think the tests were in English too? I'm not that sure about that part.
I think so but I think I should pass!!! Many thanks for watching Brian :)
Thank you for the info - they have learning class here on Camposol :)
If you bring your goods from UK now, you pay 20% import tax, 😧
Many thanks for your comment Sandy :)
@ Me alegro
Excited to be moving to Spain next year :) A dream for me to live there, thinking of Malaga. Murcia must be super nice too, I was thinking of Alicante as well. Where do you guys live and which location is best for you? I am personally not a big city person, I like the seaside more :)
Hi, thanks for watching. Malaga, Murcia and Alicante are all big Cities but all near the sea. I live just outside of Mazarron which also has a Port with many sandy beaches. Best thing is to check them all out and you will soon find the place you love. Good luck in your new adventure :)
@ Definitely will, just waiting for the covid restrictions to subside a bit before coming over :) Thank you for the wishes, have a great week!
Hi, also looking at Spain, do consider taxation in the various regions before committing to an area, for us Valencia isn't the best for our situation.
I started planning my escape the day after the referendum result came in, not needing a crystal ball to see the future of hate, greed and division being fostered by the unhappy , lost and miserable voters for brexit. After jumping through the various hoops , the Spanish policeman stamped his approval for my residencia and welcomed me home. Now a happy legal European immigrant, Salud de Gran Canaria, essential to learn the (Canarian ) Spanish language though.
Many thanks for your comment :)
@ Hi thank you, i would just like to say what a beautiful place to live Gran Canaria is, i found a small town and now live with the locals, who are comical , helpful and always filling the little cafes and bars, along with the police, ambulance crews and the post man. They have made me welcome and the nearest i can say is it's like turning the clock back 50 odd years. The Spanish grammar has been difficult but so worthwhile when you get results, the locals really appreciate your efforts. Sorry to ramble lol.
@@philiphowell1505 good to know :)

Creo que puedes cambiar el texto (CC) al español. Muchas gracias por ver 👍🇪🇸

Many thanks for the info and thanks for watching :)
@ love the vlogs and have only just found you, we are still in lockdown in sydney , Oz...have been trying to get over there for the last 2 years :(
hopefully soon :)
@@nixbradley hope you manage to get to Spain soon :)
@ us too :)
Congratulations on making this life for yourselves. I wish I'd had that courage, because now I'm trapped on this island (Britain) with the mad Tories and we can only leave for 90 days in any 180. Mad.
Many thanks for your comment Gwyneth, hopefully things will change here. Many thanks for watching :)
Don’t you miss uk, sometimes?
I go to spain,?quite often, to the north and to the south, but after 3 weeks, I like to be back to uk.
Not really, I'm old now, life in the UK for me was too fast while here, it's much slower way of life. Many thanks for your question :)
You should try and learn Spanish Shaun, you are a real natural people person and natural communicator. I'd say you would get it really quickly!
Thank you Karl for your comment - I'm trying and thanks for watching :)
What is the latest on Brit retirees in Spain concerning receiving pensions in a Spanish bank, with the bank charges?
Good question, mine it's free bank charges but I still rather have mine paid into my own UK bank and bring over what I need (my own reason). Many thanks for watching :)
who's paying for your health care??
NHS Larry.
Maybe a daft question!.. but is it possible to have your UK pension paid gross(tax free) at source in England...,once you become a Spanish Resident?🤔
Then simply pay tax in Spain of course.😉💰
To be honest Chris, you need to ask a solicitor this question. All I can say Spain & UK had agreement about taxes but now not sure. Many thanks for watching :)
@ 👍🍻🙏
Actually that’s just how it works. Once you advise the UK that you are a fiscal tax resident in Spain, your pension gets converted into euros at source (at the best rate) and is sent to your Spanish bank account or wherever you want it. You then pay tax on it in Spain thru your yearly declaration
@@essexranger ...ah,many thanks Upton for clarifying.👍🍻
Portugal best option.
Wait, Spain good as well.
Thank you Robert for your comment :)
Spanish driving test is eye test/blood pressure test and playing video game for couple of minutes & visit to traffico, you DON'T go out in car with driving instructor
If you come to Spain now and apply to be a resident, you will have to take a Spanish driving test. That was in the old days :)
Go solar power.
If I knew more about it (costs) then I would. Hardly anybody around here uses solar except for heating their pool or water. Many thanks for watching Jonathan :)
I definitely wouldn't do what I did 18 years ago live in Spain.
Many thanks for your comment :)
What happened Irene??
Too late for any more oaps😡
Unless they are rich Philip, many thanks for watching :)
Spain is amazing or at least was
Many thanks for your comment Colin and thanks for watching :)
Still is :)
Thanks for the video Shaun, I’m with you on the siesta shite, I get it in the Summer I live in Andujar the hottest part in Spain the rest of year is owl Spanish bluff but in their defence they stay open till four, but let’s face it A LOT of the Spanish are plain lazy. 😀😅😀😅
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. Many thanks for watching :)
Well, all foreigners go south looking for the sun and the beach, that is the Spain you know ... why do you think it is the poorest part of the country? But not the whole country works the same way. In Italy it is exactly the same, the south is not like the north in many ways.
How did you find learning Spanish? Is it difficult or is it easier when your around it all the time?
@@bronagh1579 difficult :)
Would be a dream to live in Spain... the Spanish people are lovely and kind ❤
Thank you Mike, glad you enjoyed the video. Many thanks for watching 👍🇪🇸
