You've no idea how much this video was useful to me. Seriously, I'm a 12th standard science student & I always wanted a video on RUclips which can show these stuffs. I mean, literally... One of the most satisfacted video of all time. Thanks to u. Pls keep on uploading more.
I stumbled across this video and after being told I could not upgrade my laptop, this gave me the impetus to try. My first mistake was NOT taking the laptop completely apart as when I did, I found out my particular model has a glued in CPU. But using his links, I bought a new used Mobo, wireless card and i7 cpu. The instructions were fantastic and left nothing out. Of course, it helps to not get snobby and think you know the next step...as when everything was assembled and the mousepad did not work. Oh yeah, the last step was pulling the connection ribbon and the FIRST step in putting it back together was REATTACHING it!! That second tear down/ rebuild took much less time and everything works great. In fact, better than I had dreamed. And JSnake is a wonderful shop. As I ended up not buying anything from him, I offered to pay for the advice but he refused! So send business his way and like as much as you can! Thanks again and HNY!

I bought back an old HP ProBook 4540s laptop from work a week ago and thanks to this video I chose HP and not Dell.
I didn't know that you can replace so many components in an old laptop to increase its performance.
I spent the equivalent of $25 for the laptop and about $100 for the new i7 3740QM processor, the wifi card suggested in the material and 16 GB RAM. Unfortunately, the memory came to me not as I ordered.
Some unknown Chinese brand called SemsoTai with memory cubes marked SEC 449 HYKO. DDR3L 1600 2 x 8GB SODIMM. I have no idea if they will work properly.
Anyway, thanks for the video. In the future I will replace the HDD with an SSD and probably replace the battery as well.
The screen is something I'm pondering over, as it's a significant cost though, and I don't know if I need that much of an upgrade. I will be using the laptop in the garage as a workshop for older interfaces and car software. I'm therefore considering moving back to Windows 7.

I've had my 4540s for a couple years. Its definitely lost its edge and I wanted to spruce it up before my deployment. I took off the battery case and removed both the HD and 4GB RAM card just to make sure I could do it. I am upgrading to ssd and 16 gb ram. I also researched how to clone my HD prior to. I can't thank you enough!

Unfortunately my 4540s is already maxed, but this video was great for helping replace a frayed video cable that had been causing display issues for years. Kinda overkill for what I needed, but it was far superior to the other available videos for the 4540s. Well done. Thanks!
Mine is flickering when I bend the display all the way , could it be the video cable ?
@@sidahmedhani5818 Yes. That is exactly what my display was doing for years before I replaced the cable. By the time I finally decided to open the case, there was only one position where the display would show without the flicker.
Well I'm at that place where the display has to be in a specific angle for it to not flicker .

I got this exact model today on ebay because it was 50 dollars and I thought id upgrade to SSD when I got it. now I realize I stumbled into a very awesome customizable laptop, can't wait for it to get delivered!

@@SanjayVerma-sr2lz No, it will work without it, but you should put something in there so the SSD isn't just hanging from the SATA socket.

One of the top eBay screen listings recommends against trying to upgrade the screen to full HD because their product is newer with EDID built in and will produce ghostly images, lines or white screen. I wonder if they are forgetting to replace the cable.

How does the Wi-Fi adapter (Intel Wireless-AC 7260HMW network card) work? Are there any problems?
Great video! I did use Acer Aspire v3571g since 2012 and for 10 years it just didn't want to die. Good hardware, but the plastic case and low quality screen keyboard and plastics were dissapointing. It is still working, but I decided to sell it for parts. I have as well this HP 4540s in good condition, but it needs an upgrade. Gonna give it two 8Gb RAM cards and 1 Tb HD. It sucks this laptop has a crappy videocard meanwhile the Acer has GeFore GT 640M. I love Acers over HP. Cause Acer gives You more power for less money. But HP has these sexy metals and high qual plastics and good battery. This HP 4540s would still be a superb laptop if it had GeForce videocard. Anyways. Gonna watch Your video and upgrade my HP to max.

Wireless card time stamp is 4:00ish - these do not support 5 GHz, which I learned the hard way. Great video, thanks!
We put timestamps in the description. Did you find any documentation on 5GHz support or lack thereof? That was one of the first things we tested when we installed the card; we connected to a 5GHz network and did an Ookla test.
Hello again, thanks alor I've made the upgrade ..cpu is i7 3740, Ram 16, Wifi adapter 2.5 &5, ssd500 .. but then laptop worked once, after awhile black screen and don't want to start, just blinking caps lock .. any idea ???
ok I found out that one of the RAM are not working, I removed it, but still the windows takes time to load !!

Hi my laptop overheat on the left corner which is the palm wrest so i just wnated to know whats there and is there any thing that i can do about it.
Well, that's the heatsink and fan. If you have a quad core CPU it's going to get hot. All you can really do is make sure that the fan and vent are clean, and reapply quality thermal paste.

Very few of these systems shipped with Windows 7. Windows 10 is ideal, and runs like a dream.
I did everything minus processor. Mine has the i5 3230m Its better but still lagging too much. I deleted bloatware also. It shows 16GB ram but runs slow and uses 50-100% CPU at idle sometimes. Is this a limitation on processor? Or is it a settings issue?
Hello, I opened my laptop and my processor seems glued in. I ordered the one you said and it’s bigger and there is no place to slot in. Like there is no white bracket to put it in like in your video. Did you encounter this by this model 4540s, is there a way around it (perhaps a video how to)?
Not all 4540s boards are made the same. Later revisions have BGA CPU's that are impossible for most people to upgrade. Best bet is to buy a used socketed board on ebay.

I have just put my 16 gb ram in and installed windows 10 and windows detects 16 gb in dxdiag. Must I still do something else as you did in this video, or is all good ? Also do I need to check bios ? How do you update the bios exactly, you got a link or simple advice for that? tnx !
I take it windows is detecting LESS than 16GB for you to make that comment? Here is the procedure:
1. Start Run msconfig
2. Boot tab
3. Advanced Options button
4. Then Maximum Memory
5. choose 8192
6. turn off
7. Install your two 8gb modules
8. Then turn on
9. back to msconfig
10. same options as above
11. choose 16384 for maximum memory
Updating the BIOS is finicky process. Only two methods are recommended:
1. Install from USB via booting from or in BIOS (google the process for your laptop; rom file can be found on HP's website for your specific model)
2. Flash Chip Programmer (will never fail, can also revive bricked BIOS's)
Can I use the B156HW02 screen instead? I would buy it with the 50.4RY03.001 cable. Does it work?
Update: I upgraded the monitor with the cable as above and it works fine
@@lingzha4 Sorry for the late reply. Don't normally recommend AUO screens because they have a budget line of panels that are not IPS/AHVA. All LG screens are IPS/AHVA or very similar spec, so you can't go wrong. But they all work.
I know it seems old post but I would like to ask you may you faced the same, I have in the device manager "Other devices" SMS /MMS ... i bought the same wifi adapter which you refer to in the video, do you know what is the use of it ?
Well, that would mean cellular support. On this particular HP model the SIM card slot is notably omitted and so is the second WWAN slot. Have no idea why you are seeing that. Is this an HP 4540s?
My 4540s built-in wifi, keyboard, and trackpad no longer work. I'm guessing I disconnected something when I replaced the screen. Any tips?
These are isolated problems. You can check on the wifi card by just unscrewing the bottom door. Try reseating, cleaning the pins with alcohol, and check the coaxial connections. The Keyboard and Trackpad must be disconnected to replace the screen. I would pop out the keyboard (should just be a screw or two on the bottom, then slide out of the palmrest) and look at the ribbon cable connectors: The ribbon cables all have a white line that should be lined up with the connector and very close to in distance to the connector. If those look okay, disconnect the cables and use and eraser to clean marks on the pins, following by alcohol and reinsertion. The keyboard is a bit tricky to plug in properly but just be patient.

do you know if the PCIE socket pads can be used if a connector is soldered on? I'm curious if an external GPU could be used with that connector (via EXP GDC Beast)
Agh, man I wish I knew. I do know adding on components usually also involves adding a few resistors/capacitors to help power and regulate the new connector. I really wish I could find the board in this line up that has that part already soldered on, would answer a lot of questions as well as open new upgrade paths.
Something semi feasible is removing the wifi card and switching to ethernet for gaming, as you'd never use the Beast on the go anyhow. But you already knew this.
Hi, could you recommend max upgrades for hp probook 4720s? Also question, why upgrade the wifi card? And crazier question, desoldering the graphics chip and resoldering a higher end card to the MB.
Last question, I've recently been thinking about perhaps buying a differnet hp MB and modding my laptop case to house the MB, do you think this is doable?

1. The 4720s is a bit older, and offers a few complications:
a) CPU: i7 640m. Very likely will not be able to put a Quad Core cpu inside. 1st gen Quad Core requires discrete graphics on board, and in my experience sometimes only certain discrete graphics chips will work.
b) RAM: 2x4GB 1333MHz
c) Wi-Fi/BT: 1st gen laptops with physical wifi control switches don't like the high end 7260 card I recommend. Would only use whatever is in the service manual; upgrade can give you must faster speeds over wifi and bluetooth
d) Screen: Something from the LP173WF1 lineup that has screw mounts on the sides. Will give you FHD IPS
e) SSD: Any 2.5" SATA SSD (MX500, 860 Evo, WD Blue, SU800). You will only get SATA II speeds on this laptop
f) ODD: You can put in a Blu-Ray Drive or another SSD or large HDD with an adapter.
g) GPU: Don't even try it. While this can technically be done with BGA CPU's, GPU chipsets are basically integrated at the board level; can't just swap out a chip for a different one
h) Thermal Paste: Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut
i) OS: Windows 10 Pro (use trick from video)
If you really want to do a MOBO upgrade you need to compare the actual board with another: look for general size, port locations, screw mounts, and MOST importantly cable connectors. Yeah, it's a long shot, but if you look in the HP family you may find they have reused PCB designs.
1) i updated the screen, and am wondering whether cable or screen itself are to blame. Symptoms: flickering screen which when not flickering shows rainbow colors on only 1/2 of the screen. No change with hinge position. WORKS FINE with HDMI connected to external monitor. Do you suspect cable, or screen?
2) like you, I did not do BIOS update. Things seem to work fine. Original BIOS :/ ... is it very important to update now, considering risks?
Hi there, did you also swap out the LCD cable or just the screen? Usually the OEM cable is single channel and cannot support FHD. But, I have also had a damaged LCD cable that was dual channel and need to replace it again. Not likely the screen here.
I used to think BIOS updates could only be problematic if the update file was corrupted or the machine lost power mid update. After seeing one of our HP 15-BS series laptops brick itself from an official BIOS update that neither lost power nor had a corrupted update I am weary of ever updating the BIOS again. Had to find the original BIOS, pull the board, and flash the BIOS chip using a programmer. Was a huge mess. Can't advise either way.
@@JSnakeRepair 1st pass: I swapped the LCD Cable + screen, both from ebay. that cable has lasted 2-3 years. For the 2nd pass, I have a new dual channel cable, but thought I should ask your opinion since a replacement screen would be easy to do while I'm in there for the cable.

Is the HD 4000 GPU integraded with the CPU or is that one also removable? Also, will upgrading my laptop like that help with gaming performance?
All Intel HD graphics are integrated. The second possible AMD chip is also soldered on board. Upgrading your laptop will help a lot with games, but it just depends on the game. An SSD will help with load time, providing 8GB or more of RAM will help the game not chug as much, and a faster CPU will provide an immense improvement in general, but specifically for games like those on the Source engine (L4D, CSGO, etc). The graphics card will quickly become the bottleneck, but this is a 2012 laptop after all.
@@JSnakeRepair I'm all good with the RAM, I believe, since I upgraded to 12GB from 4GB, I am also planning to buy a 1TB SSD when possible, I might also upgrade to a quad core CPU but I am really not sure which one.
As for the games: Most of them run well, such as Fallout New Vegas and a lot of source games run ok (TF2, L4D2, CSS, HL2) However I tested RE3 Remake and it didn't really run well, I have yet to test Halo MCC but it might also not run as well. So playing most games released after 2013/2014 is probably gonna be an issue for now.
@@JonnyHorseman The final option to squeeze gaming life out of this is the EXP GDC Beast eGPU solution. It will require sacrificing the wifi card and a small case mod, but is not out of the question.

I am confused on if I am getting the right cable on Ebay. The link no longer has an item and when I put 50.4RY03.001 Cable into eBay it lists the cable as one for the "For HP Probook 4540S 4570S 4730S Series LCD LVDS Video Cable ". Are these OEM non dual channel cables or will any cable with 50.4RY03.001 Cable be correct for screen upgrade? Thanks.
The link I shared likely expired. As long as the item has 50.4RY03.001 in the name, it is dual channel and will work for multiple HP models in the line. I can't say whether or not they are all OEM, but I can say that the margins are small and the difficulty to make is high for these cables, so it is unlikely there are many non-oems.

It's not really practically to add the AMD Chip onto your MOBO if it's not there. Buy a board with it already on there, or look at using an eGPU plugged into WiFi slot. The eGPU will draw power from an external power supply, not the laptop.
Hi ! When i make upgrade from i5 3230m to i7 3820qm and add extra ssd disk. Watt consuming go more on 10-12 watt. Will it be enough of 90 watt psu ? Or needed more powerful psu ?

I can't tell you the exact display model beyond LP156WF1, but the models listed in the description are all identical. The screen was pulled from an Alienware M15X.

Nice comprehensive video man! This is awesome. I have upgraded mine with Crucial's 16 GB RAM and 500 GB SSD. I will be doing the display screen next and wifi card. Unfortunately, the CPU is soldered Hewlett-Packard 17F6 KBC Version 58.20 which is a total bummer since I want to upgrade this to i7. That's not really a proper model number identifier, I can't look up your board. If you can't be more specific on the board model, what CPU is in there now?

The charging port is a separate part (676706-YD1) retained by separate screws and a bracket. You will need to remove the entire black bottom case (lots of Torx screws; some hidden under rubber covers).

Hi there, so both 2nd and 3rd Gen mobile intel chips fit into Socket G2, so technically speaking it is possible. When you also consider the number of years, countries, and configurations this popular laptop has spanned it is also plausible.
To get definitive answer though, I would enter your Product Number (not model number IE 4540s) on HP PartSurfer to get all possible configurations: partsurfer.hp.com/partsurfer/

That's very peculiar that your 4540s came with a second gen CPU. While the 3720QM is the same socket, I would advise against something uncharted in this case. Looks like the i7-3612QM and i7-3632QM are both confirmed to work. You could still try the i7-3720QM and return it if it doesn't work, let us know what you find though! All other upgrades you mention will work great.
The cable that you used, does that only available as aftermarket parts? Or some HP laptops does comes with it. If so what are the model numbers?

I use mine for working only and i want to multi task without lag
SSD upgrade is a must. From there it just depends on your use case. RAM has gotten very cheap and the upgrade process very straightforward. For most users 8GB is plenty.
The Quad Core CPU will certainly be a huge jump, but a lot of people that don't do much more than productivity and web browsing won't see the boost. If you can find a QM processor for $50 or less I would say it's worth it.

As far as I know, there is none. We are limited to the mPCIe form factor, and the fastest we have is BT 4.0.
My 4540s has an AMD Radeon HD 7650M some years ago it stopped working. I can't seem to find a replacement or another GPU that can fit and is compatible. Do you have any suggestions?
Are you quite certain that the AMD chip has failed? What symptoms are you experiencing? The 7650m is a coprocessor on the HP 4540s, in that Intel HD Graphics 4000 is used first and foremost, with the AMD chip activating in graphically intense scenarios.
As this is a BGA chip (soldered), there are not going to be any 'upgrades'. Only 'replacements'. At which point you are better off just replacing the motherboard.
The only real 'upgrade' is an external GPU you could potentially plug in, but this is less than ideal for most people.

The symptoms are either BSOD as soon as windows starts or getting stuck on the windows logo during boot.
The only way around is to disable the AMD or not have a driver for it.
I've tried tried several drivers with no success. Also tried other stuff I found on forums.
Hi, i did the wifi card and 16GB RAM upgrade successfully. I updated the bios also before those upgrades. I tried to do the cpu upgrade but the laptop wont start. The caps lock key flashes about 4 times, and i can hear the fan at full speed, and it stays like that. Nothing else. I used a 90W PSU, and i reseted the bios by unplugging the cmos battery for a few minutes. The cpu im trying to install is i7 intel 3840QM. I installed back the original cpu and runs fine again. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Sounds like you are doing everything correctly. There are multiple motherboard revisions of the 4540s...while a 3840QM worked in mine, I suppose it's 'possible' it won't work in others. As these are PGA CPUs, I would inspect for any damaged/missing pins...or corrosion. Dust/debris probably not plausible given your description. HP site suggests is a motherboard failure, which i know is not since it runs fine with my original cpu (i5-3230M). I have also failed to find online the location of my mobo revision, model, or number. Ive ran out of ideas. I'm about to return the CPU, if i can. Btw, there is no damage, dirt, or rust on pins. @@geearturi If the CPU looks fine, there's really only two options at this point: Your motherboard (who's model info is probably only visible if you remove it from the bottom case/palmrest) likely has a CPU whitelist that doesn't allow for the 3840QM, OR the CPU is defective (not as likely).
I suppose it is also possible that the CPU just needs to be reseated (akin to RAM sticks)...but I would imagine you've already tried this.

There is also such thing as the 'silicon lottery'...which usually means something different than what I am about to describe but I am using the phrase all the same...This computer can technically take 2133MHz RAM...whether or not it will actually function WELL or AT ALL is up to other more 'hidden' factors...have seen the RAM installed in two identical models and see one borderline crash and the other right as rain. While not the same as CPU, they are very much married.
Would advise returning unfortunately.

Well, answers to all of your questions were addressed in our video. Please look at the description for timestamps to each part as well as parts to buy. RAM will automatically down clock to the lowest speed installed. Sounds like you have at least one 1333MHz dimm installed. No overheating problems with the best CPU: i7-3840QM.

These are 3rd gen processors, they are not terribly efficient. They will get hot and the fan will run under stress. If you've cleaned the fan/heatsink and put on decent thermal paste, you are fine.

I purchased my 4540S from goodwill for $75.00, I upgraded to 6GB of memory, turned it on and that's the extent of my knowledge when it comes to computers. Hi Carl! It is worth upgrading if you are willing to do it! By that I mean, not pay someone else to do it. You should be able to find a powerful and cheap compatible CPU from this list (www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i5_Mobile/i5-3230M_(PGA).html) Pick one of the 4-core i7 QM Processors, basically any are great, so just look on eBay to see which is the most affordable.
Just an FYI on how cheap SSD and RAM prices are right now: I can buy 16GB of laptop RAM for under $40, and SSD's are officially 10 cents/GB or cheaper, which means you can get a solid 500GB SSD for $50.
Any computer running Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 can be upgraded to Windows 10 and activated (legally and officially) for free! I mention this near the end of the video.
Thanks for your video...much appreciated. The only mod I'm interested in is the Dual Band Wireless AC since I have both antenna cables. After much research, I read that the purchase of an Intel Wireless-AC 7260HMW compatible with the HP ProBook 4540s is not that simple. Apparently, the chip must have one of the following SPS numbers: 710661-001, 756753-001, 784639-005, to be HP compatible and even then it may not work.
Some report BSOD on bootup while many report that Bluetooth cannot be installed. One has suggested completely uninstalling the WiFi and BT drivers prior to installing the 7260 to avoid the BSOD while another person reported success without uninstalling the drivers...go figure! Most said that the WiFi drivers were installed by Windows 10 on bootup but never the BT drivers. Some had to use the Intel Driver Update Utility or the Intel Driver & Support Assistant to get BT drivers installed and get a more up-to-date WiFi driver in the bargain.
As for the whitelist, 2 persons have reported that it's not referred to if you have the latest BIOS update which is F.68, 2019-04-11.
I contacted several vendors on Amazon and on eBay who were selling the 7260-AC with the SPS numbers mentioned above and all replied that none of their chips were compatible with the HP 4540s.
My choice now is to either contact more vendors until one confirms compatibility or to give up altogether. What's your take on this?

Rubbish, almost all of it. Those HP Part numbers are just HP's model number rebranding of other manufacturer's components.
To be clear, I have done a lot of research on Wi-Fi cards since making this video. WiFi cards are single handedly the most finicky component to upgrade. And furthermore, you don't need 2 antennas for Dual Band WiFi, or AC WiFi...part of what I learned in my research.
In short, the AC 7260HMW is very problematic on older laptops with a physical wireless switch. I am testing it on a machine now and was running into problems until I installed the driver from Intel's website. My problems have always been relegated to WiFi networks dropping out, and occasionally BSODs.
You are correct though, it seems at some point in the BIOS updates they dropped the WiFi Whitelist. Of course they would not broadcast something like this, I would imagine this was the final EOL update where they said, do whatever you want, we don't support this machine anymore.
And no, you can tell vendors and other forum-ers to get lost. All they do is go look at the Service Manual, which of course has not been updated since it's release and has only been tested with certain parts even at the time.
So in short, yes the card works, and works well. The best course of action would be to download (but not install) the 7260 drivers from Intel, update the BIOS, then install the card and then install the updates. Another recent discovery is that the internal antenna cables are not actually rated for AC Wi-Fi speeds, rather N Wi-Fi speeds. AC Wi-Fi can still work, but just not at their full potential.
ALSO, the Intel 6235 WiFi card is also Dual Band and supporting MIMO, and is natively supported. So, if you really just need Dual Band, this card will work too. The download speeds will not be as high as the AC 7260, assuming you have an AC router.
This is an amazing video! This is Exactly what I was looking for! I upgraded Ram from 8 to 16 and upgraded HDD to 500 SSD. This changes improved my laptop a little bit, but I still have lots of lag while streaming. So now I am thinking to change wifi card and Cpu (it constantly runs around 100% while streaming). My processor is AMD A8-4500 M APU with Radeon (tm). Would I able to change that to i7-3720QM CPU (per video recommendation)? and would these changes (wifi card and cpu) improve speed of my laptop while streaming (I have Hp ProBook 4545s)? P.S. I also checked a few listings on eBay for wifi card Intel 7260HMW and a lot of them are staying that their product compatible with brands for Acer, Dell and Samsung and not HP. Because HP is one of a few brands that has a WiFi card whitelist...that specifically blocks support for certain cards. This card works on this laptop, so that's what matters. Your AMD CPU can't be upgraded to an Intel CPU, and furthermore you are probably at the end of the line for CPU upgrades. The A10-5750M is purportedly compatible, but no one has confirmed it.
You need to verify that your laptop has 2 antenna cables plugged into your WiF card prior to upgrading to the 7260.

Well, if you want to UPGRADE the screen I would go with a FHD screen. Yes, it needs to 15.6" and 40-pin LVDS (I don't think the 4540s supports eDP), and you will need a dual channel display cable to go with it. LG screens have a picture quality comparable to IPS, but are technically TN like most (all?) 40-pin IPS screens.
So, apparently some people over at tonymacx86 reference those 'slim' screens being compatible with HP 45x/65x series. Those 'slim' screens have a different screw mount setup (protruding top/bottom) as opposed to left/right integrated in the frame. Additionally, I think all those slim screens are 30-pin edp...ie probably not even compatible.
I am still learning all the nuances of laptop screens (of which there are many, all poorly documented), so I no longer give definite answers. However, I can give a recommendation: www.panelook.com/modelsearch.php?keyword=LP156WF1 pick any screen from this batch you like that is 40-pin LVDS...each should have a matte and glossy variant (anti-glare vs better color).

Great video. Very informative. Just one question though. My laptop's main battery is not charging and the CMOS message is continuously coming up on boot up. I think that I need to replace the watch battery which I believe is next to the WIFI card but is enclosed by the bottom case. This is the same Notebook as in the video. Any information you or the audience can tell me would be appreciated.
The CMOS batteries do require even further disassembly, you basically need to remove the whole board to get it. And the issue of the main laptop battery not charging is not related to the main battery. You can run a Battery Health Report in Windows from the command prompt to see what is going on with that.

Hi, the LVDS cables are unfortunately a bit fragile: lots of very small cable that can be yanked out of their position. We had to replace one for this reason and the problem was fixed. If you are on your second cable and still seeing problems, I would use DDU and then reinstall your graphics driver. If you have an AMD chip, only download the drivers from Windows Update or the HP downloads page.

Funny story, just went back and checked on a client yesterday running a i7-3840QM that I installed in their 4540s. Runs spectacularly still, they just had a problem with the RAM after an update; somehow the System Configuration setting for 16GB was reset (this laptop doesn't like to use more than 8GB by default).

Yes, 1600MHz is natively supported, not down clocked. We actually tried 2133MHz and managed to run a GeekBench benchmark test (we now have the highest score in the world) but the machine was incredibly glitchy. Back to 1600MHz we went.

Hello! No news on the overclockable mobile processors unfortunately. The pricing on those chips is rarely low enough to stomach, and we currently have not been working on machines with such a socket (or even remotely adequate cooling solution). The 3840QM is still running strong on our clients machine, just use good thermal paste. 3rd gen processors can only address up to 8GB per dimm. This laptop has 2 dimm slots, so 16GB is the ceiling. We also tried 2133MHz RAM, but Windows was very glitchy; this is likely a board by board case for support.

I didn't actually remove the speakers in this video. Check the speakers to see if the wires are frayed/cut and if the gaskets are blown. Then try downloading the sound drivers from HP's website.

Did you face any issue with Bluetooth after installing 7260hwm wifi card?
Truthfully, the last two clients we outfitted this computer with didn't use Bluetooth that much. We do know that this card can be problematic on certain laptops though (even without whitelists; notably those with discrete hardware wireless switches); always install both the latest AC7260 Bluetooth and Wi-Fi drivers individually from Intel's website.

@@maxdetsyk The model variations are very subtle, but that would be what the last 4 characters following the hyphen denote. The first 2 letters (TL) seem to correspond to Interface type (LVDS), the latter two seem to correspond to screen attributes...namely peak brightness, Contrast Ratio, and Viewing Angle. For brightness, you have the lower rating of 220 nits, while similar variations can have 300 nits. Your CR and VA are quite good though.

Laptop OEM parts are very difficult to upgrade. Webcams, fingerprint sensors, fans, and the like are custom made for a specific series of laptops and that's basically it. If you can source a higher resolution webcam that will fit inside the screen bezel you will likely need a pinout diagram of the webcam wiring for both the original and the new and splice cables to reach.

Not really. The best you can reasonably do is an eGPU setup that replaces the wifi card...with the likes of mPCIe EXP GDC Beast.

The amber light above the power connection is flashing on my 2012 4540s (it's a white light when I push the on/off button), and I think that's a power distribution problem on the motherboard.
Well, not really. Unplug everything, swap the board, plug everything back in. You just need to make sure you are getting the same CPU socket and Discrete GPU. If your laptop does not have a discrete AMD GPU now, you don't want a board that has one unless you also buy a different Heatsink. For the CPU, you obviously can't use an AMD CPU in an Intel Socket (unless you also buy a compatible CPU).

I did all of the upgrades you go through in this video - outstanding. Thank you! Even found upon opening it up that I do have the graphics upgrade. I have only 1 issue: the Synaptics touch pad is intermittently AWFUL. It will work fine for 5sec, then go inop for 2sec, and so on. Sometimes it need heavy touch, sometimes only seems to work when i "roll" my finger across the touchpad. Truly awful. I've updated all drivers. I read somewhere the reverting to the previous .NET framework could be the answer. Before I resort to that: Do you have any recommendations?
Have several people still using this laptop, no issues to report. I wouldn't rule out a defective trackpad. Go ahead and try the software fixes though.

Uh, probably just find a 4540s MOBO with the AMD GPU already on it. There is no upgrading the discrete GPU, but it is technically possible to add one if you have the components and a hot air machine. You can also connect an eGPU via the WiFi card slot.

You are quite certain it is BGA? BGA is an acronym that stands for "you are stuck with this forever"; it's a chip soldered to the motherboard that can't be removed with just basic tools. If you can locate both an expert in hot air and a compatible BGA CPU chip, then there is hope. But this path is truly not for most.

Could you also recommend a thermal paste. I've seen a fairly good option of Arctic MX-4 with thermal conductivity 8.5W/mk. As I googled the TG-3 on the video has 4.7W/mk. Does that mean the first one would be better as its conductivity is higher?
You would be correct! The Thermaltake I use is a tried and true 'middle of the line' paste. Your MX-4 is even higher end. These conductivity ratings should be taken with a grain of salt though, I would take actual user performance reviews and feedback over specifications.

Oleh Sorokin Holy Cow I am embarrassed. I didn’t read the AMD HD GPU model number you mentioned correctly. That would have been a dead giveaway you were using an AMD CPU; the AMD CPUs were not common on this model. I am so sorry! The only thing you can do is buy a new board, which probably costs as much as the laptop is used. You must upgrade to an AMD CPU, if any.

If by Factory Reset you mean reinstall Windows, no. That's really just for SSD's. On rare occasions swapping out multiple components causes activation complications, but a call to Microsofts automated Activation line will resolve that.

It's probably sufficient to just change the SSD. Then if performance is not where you want it do RAM and CPU.

Hi, I don't recommend the same upgrades as you have an AMD machine not an Intel! Big differences...the CPU and WiFi card I use will not work in yours. Looks like you can use an A10-4600 for a slight CPU buff. RAM is cheap, go for 16GB, and any SSD will do.

That is very strange. We installed the latest BIOS available, and certainly there have been no updates since then (for this 2012 laptop). Just go to HP's website and see the latest version there.

The answer is 'usually' no. You could always pick up a cheap 32GB mSATA SSD and try though. In my experience they are either not recognized, or they disable the SATA port when in use.

Built-in as in soldered-in, or there by default? If your laptop is a 4540s the answer is yes.

Interesting, it seems HP has not added support for the Fingerprint sensor in Windows 10. Looks like you have to install the Lenovo version here: support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds103635 This is not a problem btw, the driver is not actually for 'Lenovo' it is for Synaptics distributed by Lenovo. Uninstall your current driver, try this, and then reboot.
As for the headphone jack? Very odd. There is no cooling or heat dispersion going on in that part of the case. Underneath is the WiFi card and CMOS battery, which is particularly disturbing to think the battery is getting that hot. You might consider swapping out that battery if you are savvy enough to open up your case further than my video details that would be a cheap fix. Have never heard of CMOS batteries exploding, but it IS a battery after all.

Kind of sad there are so many. They are all 15.6" LG IPS laptop screens as indicated by LP156WF1. The first 2 characters relate the number of pins on the connector, the location of the connector, and the location of the screw mounting holes. So, they are all (TL), as all of these screens work with this laptop. The last 2 have to do with revision, release date, and release region. Ironic, but while 60Hz is implied by the model LP156WF1, there is nothing to notate whether or not the screen is glossy or matte. Almost all of the screens listed have both matte and glossy variants, so always check for this as well. Glossy has better color reproduction, but matte resists glare and reduces eye strain.
Wonderful video, thank you for putting this up. I came here looking for how to get at the LCD cable, and I ended up really interested in the whole thing. Still on Win7Pro, and no big complaints (flickering screen and dead battery aside). I want to ask you: For the parts outlay, and the time, it seems like a no-brainer. What an eye-opener. Is there any reason that my own machine, rebuilt as you have, would NOT last another 4-5 years? What risks or maintenance costs would i look forward to? I have done a SSD and heatsink paste on other laptops, never anything like this.
That's the REALLY crazy part. I would argue YES. There is is only a 15% increase in performance from a 3840QM to yesteryear's best mobile chip, the 7700HQ, and that chip alone is more than enough for all consumers and prosumers. Moore's law will likely still apply, but that doesn't mean the old stuff isn't good enough. The last great user-upgradeable MacBook from 2012 (what I still use) featured a 3820QM, and still destroys all common compute tasks.
It is truly sad that Apple has spawned a form factor war in which it's only good if it's thinner than last year. 2013's 4th generation chips featured the last user-upgradeable laptop CPU's.
The only bottleneck moving forward...is the GPU. With a AMD 7650M, you are talking graphics performance akin to an integrated Intel HD 4600 chip, found in 4th generation processors. Windows no longer natively supports 1st generation IGPU's, and Mac no longer supports GPUs older than 2012. Graphics acceleration is a very small feature than makes a big difference when not present. So, as we only care about Windows here, I would say we are safe for a while with a competent 3rd Gen (or 4th gen comparable chip if you have a discrete 7650M) on this laptop.
Then again, ALL OF THIS is assuming you care about the latest OS. Windows 7 support is about to end, but Windows 10 supports almost everything well.

My question is "am I just begging for the motherboard to go in a few months?" ... I'm 100% with you on the approach and ethos. I guess I'm wondering what the catch is here. What was your client (owner of the machine in this vid) after, and what will he get? (what is the compromise?) Before I get elbow-deep into a laptop project, how long is the end product life going to be, best-guess?
Re: Win10, i have fought it, and now I must accept my fate. Cant learn linux before Win7 EOL. (Funny you should mention, my wife's dead laptop is a 2012 15" macbook. )
@@1recorded Owner just wanted a new computer that ran windows. This was the best laptop I could purchase used AND completely deck out for only a few hundred dollars total. It has USB 3.0, HDMI, Ethernet, a beautiful screen, and POWERFUL internals. Compromise?...Maybe it runs hotter than most laptops and it's not 'super thin'. Motherboards for this model are not even that expensive, and replacement parts like batteries and keyboards are easy to find. I should have posted, but after the upgrade, this particular computer booted FASTER than ANY I have ever used. Maybe I had a lucky one...but I'm talking 2-3 seconds. I was completely blown away.
So when you consider that the motherboard is the most prone to fail part, and that is typically due to a failed graphics chip or simply overheating, do yourself a favor and put on GOOD thermal paste and clean your laptop internally with air at least every 6 months. Don't drop, don't use while eating, and keep away from moisture and humidity.
Computer parts aren't like car parts, they don't wear out over time. You take care of it, and it will theoretically NEVER stop working.
Also for the MacBook, the Retina 2012 models are known to fail. Mine, the non retina 2012, has no trend.

The plan is to follow your process down to the letter, though I do have a question re: the BIOS reset by battery-removal step: Is that crucial? You had good luck foregoing it.

Did you install the previous sound drivers or is nothing there?
@@JSnakeRepair initially there was nothing there I just went to device manager and clicked on add legacy device and selected sound and game's controller to add the option I now later download the non installable driver and updated it but still no sound although it displays my audio options
@@terlumunjoseph6779 Uh, you clicked 'Add Legacy Device'? I would just uninstall everything and try to get the driver from a windows update. If that doesn't work, just go straight to HP's website.

well done! sir. i'm using this kindda hp laptop. but vram is only 32 mb :'(. i couldn't find any options to increase it on Bios. how can i increase it?
I believe the default for Intel HD 4000 Graphics was 64MB VRAM. This cannot be increased on the 4540s. The best you can do is increase the Virtual Memory allowed to the System in Advanced System Settings. If you need more you need to get a board with a discrete GPU.
Is the speaker cable supposed to be hard to disconnect? I tried but couldn't do it...
In hindsight, I am thinking maybe a full teardown should be necessary next time. I wish I could remember exactly, but most speakers are 2 (or 3 if there's a subwoofer) Left and Right units connected by a non-removable wire, and only one speaker actually plugs into the board. This plug should not be too hard to remove, and if it is, consider a dab of rubbing alcohol on the socket and use a spudger and work each side of the plug out, a little bit at a time.

Nope! The 4540s comes with a G2 Socket, supporting only 2nd and 3rd gen intel chips.

Oleh Sorokin PGA Ivy Bridge CPUs are as good as it gets IE max performance with an I7-3840qm. This cpu (and similar quad core 3rd gen Intel cpus) demolishesthe A8 in every category but integrated graphics, but then this model also has a discrete gpu option.
