Not all 4540s boards are made the same. Later revisions have BGA CPU's that are impossible for most people to upgrade. Best bet is to buy a used socketed board on ebay.

@@lingzha4 Sorry for the late reply. Don't normally recommend AUO screens because they have a budget line of panels that are not IPS/AHVA. All LG screens are IPS/AHVA or very similar spec, so you can't go wrong. But they all work.

I take it windows is detecting LESS than 16GB for you to make that comment? Here is the procedure: 1. Start Run msconfig 2. Boot tab 3. Advanced Options button 4. Then Maximum Memory 5. choose 8192 6. turn off 7. Install your two 8gb modules 8. Then turn on 9. back to msconfig 10. same options as above 11. choose 16384 for maximum memory Updating the BIOS is finicky process. Only two methods are recommended: 1. Install from USB via booting from or in BIOS (google the process for your laptop; rom file can be found on HP's website for your specific model) 2. Flash Chip Programmer (will never fail, can also revive bricked BIOS's)

Not really. The best you can reasonably do is an eGPU setup that replaces the wifi card...with the likes of mPCIe EXP GDC Beast.

Best is i7-3840qm...it's also probably not worth the price. It can take just about any PGA third gen CPU. Just go for any quad core ivy bridge CPU that is the cheapest.

Hi there, did you also swap out the LCD cable or just the screen? Usually the OEM cable is single channel and cannot support FHD. But, I have also had a damaged LCD cable that was dual channel and need to replace it again. Not likely the screen here. I used to think BIOS updates could only be problematic if the update file was corrupted or the machine lost power mid update. After seeing one of our HP 15-BS series laptops brick itself from an official BIOS update that neither lost power nor had a corrupted update I am weary of ever updating the BIOS again. Had to find the original BIOS, pull the board, and flash the BIOS chip using a programmer. Was a huge mess. Can't advise either way.

@@JSnakeRepair 1st pass: I swapped the LCD Cable + screen, both from ebay. that cable has lasted 2-3 years. For the 2nd pass, I have a new dual channel cable, but thought I should ask your opinion since a replacement screen would be easy to do while I'm in there for the cable. Separately, thanks for your thoughts on BIOS update. Ain't broke, so i won't fix.

Looks like this does support i7 (m640 or similar). And if you have a discrete Graphics chip (AMD 4570 or 5470) you can even use a Quad Core i7 (QM line)

Sounds like you are doing everything correctly. There are multiple motherboard revisions of the 4540s...while a 3840QM worked in mine, I suppose it's 'possible' it won't work in others. As these are PGA CPUs, I would inspect for any damaged/missing pins...or corrosion. Dust/debris probably not plausible given your description. HP site suggests is a motherboard failure, which i know is not since it runs fine with my original cpu (i5-3230M). I have also failed to find online the location of my mobo revision, model, or number. Ive ran out of ideas. I'm about to return the CPU, if i can. Btw, there is no damage, dirt, or rust on pins. Any more ideas or suggestions? Thanks again in advance.

@@geearturi If the CPU looks fine, there's really only two options at this point: Your motherboard (who's model info is probably only visible if you remove it from the bottom case/palmrest) likely has a CPU whitelist that doesn't allow for the 3840QM, OR the CPU is defective (not as likely). I suppose it is also possible that the CPU just needs to be reseated (akin to RAM sticks)...but I would imagine you've already tried this. You can see here that according to 'all motherboards' your referenced upgrade only has a 20% chance of working. www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i5_Mobile/i5-3230M_(PGA).html There is also such thing as the 'silicon lottery'...which usually means something different than what I am about to describe but I am using the phrase all the same...This computer can technically take 2133MHz RAM...whether or not it will actually function WELL or AT ALL is up to other more 'hidden' factors...have seen the RAM installed in two identical models and see one borderline crash and the other right as rain. While not the same as CPU, they are very much married. Would advise returning unfortunately.

@@doddstaruniii6698 Huh, you're right. It's pretty simple: msconfig -> boot tab -> advanced button -> maximum memory = 16,384 -> restart. Also ensure you have updated your BIOS and configured your page file accordingly if performance is sluggish after upgrade.

Realistically speaking, yes. Technically speaking it may be able to handle an XM processor (overclockable), but without any overclocking capability in the BIOS and would likely work the thermal solution really hard. I don't know that anyone's tried it. They are rare and expensive.

When you consider that a 15" 2012 MacBook Pro has the i7-3820QM in a relatively constrained thermal setup, the thicker HP 4540s should fare similarly or better with the 3840QM or similar. @@МихаилРадев-о5щ

That's really funny you mention that...in 2007 I offered a service for like $10 to give people Wishmaker Jirachi and the Eon Ticket. Both the Eon Ticket and the US bonus disc were selling for about $30 each at that time. Had a few takers, but ultimately let the listing expire and only recently noticed how ludicrous hardware prices have gotten.

Thanks for sharing (especially the grub parameter)! I know this machine is hugely popular in the Hackintosh/clover scene, so I expected to see a Linux user at some point.

Friend, you do not upgrade a laptop graphics card (except under specific scenarios that do not apply here). If your Laptop does not already have the AMD chip on board, you could find a mad scientist BGA expert to add it for you, or upgrade the VRAM up to 2GB. This would not be a very competent GPU in 2023 though... Your other option is an eGPU via something like the mSATA adapter from EXP GDC. This would replace the Wi-Fi card.

Update I installed LP156WF1-TLF3, satisfied, no flickering The only con is that sometimes there is not enough brightness, even if I raised it to the maximum

@@maxdetsyk The model variations are very subtle, but that would be what the last 4 characters following the hyphen denote. The first 2 letters (TL) seem to correspond to Interface type (LVDS), the latter two seem to correspond to screen attributes...namely peak brightness, Contrast Ratio, and Viewing Angle. For brightness, you have the lower rating of 220 nits, while similar variations can have 300 nits. Your CR and VA are quite good though.

As far as I know, there is none. We are limited to the mPCIe form factor, and the fastest we have is BT 4.0.

Very few of these systems shipped with Windows 7. Windows 10 is ideal, and runs like a dream.

The answer is 'usually' no. You could always pick up a cheap 32GB mSATA SSD and try though. In my experience they are either not recognized, or they disable the SATA port when in use.

Truthfully, the last two clients we outfitted this computer with didn't use Bluetooth that much. We do know that this card can be problematic on certain laptops though (even without whitelists; notably those with discrete hardware wireless switches); always install both the latest AC7260 Bluetooth and Wi-Fi drivers individually from Intel's website.

The charging port is a separate part (676706-YD1) retained by separate screws and a bracket. You will need to remove the entire black bottom case (lots of Torx screws; some hidden under rubber covers).

I have dedicated graphics card which you laptop don't have.. is it possible to replace or upgrade dedicated graphics card?

@@zeeshe100 Replace? Yes, if you find identical parts and a proper repair outlet. Upgrade? No. If you need more GPU power you will need to use an eGPU setup like the GDC EXP via the mSATA port. The AMD Chip (if present) will be next to the CPU underneath the metal grate and heatsink.

Are you quite certain that the AMD chip has failed? What symptoms are you experiencing? The 7650m is a coprocessor on the HP 4540s, in that Intel HD Graphics 4000 is used first and foremost, with the AMD chip activating in graphically intense scenarios. As this is a BGA chip (soldered), there are not going to be any 'upgrades'. Only 'replacements'. At which point you are better off just replacing the motherboard. The only real 'upgrade' is an external GPU you could potentially plug in, but this is less than ideal for most people.

@@JSnakeRepair Thanks for the reply. The symptoms are either BSOD as soon as windows starts or getting stuck on the windows logo during boot. The only way around is to disable the AMD or not have a driver for it. I've tried tried several drivers with no success. Also tried other stuff I found on forums.

Well, that's the heatsink and fan. If you have a quad core CPU it's going to get hot. All you can really do is make sure that the fan and vent are clean, and reapply quality thermal paste.

When you also consider the number of years, countries, and configurations this popular laptop has spanned it is also plausible. Well, if you want to UPGRADE the screen I would go with a FHD screen. Yes, it needs to 15.6" and 40-pin LVDS (I don't think the 4540s supports eDP), and you will need a dual channel display cable to go with it. LG screens have a picture quality comparable to IPS, but are technically TN like most (all?) 40-pin IPS screens. So, apparently some people over at tonymacx86 reference those 'slim' screens being compatible with HP 45x/65x series. Those 'slim' screens have a different screw mount setup (protruding top/bottom) as opposed to left/right integrated in the frame. Additionally, I think all those slim screens are 30-pin edp...ie probably not even compatible. I am still learning all the nuances of laptop screens (of which there are many, all poorly documented), so I no longer give definite answers. No; availability is much greater for most of those cartridges, but we've not gone down the monetary rabbit hole of DS Distro Carts yet. Through a simple Wi-Fi exploit you can access all 4th/5th gen distributions though.

I will let you in on the best kept secret that I had to find on my own: Buyee. A japanese marketplace proxy...you want Mercari Japan to be exact. All the pages should be translated already, but you probably still want a browser with a translator. The caveat is that you can't search for any of cards with their english names. Go to the wikipedia pages for the cards and copy several key words and search. You will see the card somewhat commonly in complete Series 1-6 lots (often with Japan exclusive mini binder), as the original way to get the card was to submit proof that you bought all the packs. The card is still rare, and the certificate is particularly rare (no, it has no functionality or use). You will only ever see the certificate included in listings where the Decoration present is the only card included, and I haven't seen many of them. The only downside to mercari is you will have to pay a few extra fees, and you can't really ask the sellers questions. But with due diligence you will get a better item at a better price, than the next option below... The only other place is going to be in large lots on eBay (coming from Japan). Expect to pay at least $500...upwards of $3000 (for very large lots or with the certificate). In both cases, set up search alerts...you will need to be quick. There's not many collectors, but the few there are desperate. And while this is certainly the most DESIRABLE pokemon e-reader card next to the eon ticket...unfortunately it is not the rarest or most pricey...

I hope to acquire it by the time I retire XD
