I realize this video is four years old, but I would like to tell you that it is an excellent and extremely comprehensive guide to setting up the mark iii. I never buy new gear, so I just picked up a deeply discounted mark iii and I watched your video to set it up. While some of your settings differ with my preferred settings, your tutorial is outstanding. It saved me from struggling with the manual for hours. The only thing I have not been able to figure out is if one of the buttons can be reprogrammed to provide quick changes in metering modes. If you happen to know the answer and stumble upon this comment, first accept my gratitude, and then let me know about the metering mode issue should you have the answer.

@@RobTrek Too bad, but I think you are right. Ironically, there seems to be a way to change the on/off switch which seems pretty useless, but no way to make metering mode changes more efficient which I would find very useful for street photography. Oh well.

Thank you, Rob. While I have a PEN-F most of the functions are available and I walked through with you. I wish you would have done a similar video for that body. I find the camera very very hard to work with and few resources to assist. I am a huge fan of yours. No hype, all useful information and your photos are grand.
Thank you and Happy New Year! Only setting I'd change fore the PenF would maybe be the C-AF to S-AF. The C-AF on the PenF is weak. I'll have to do a video of how I setup my Penf. I use the C1-C4 and creative dial quite a bit.

One constructive criticism - you lost me a bit at the end with the custom buttons; it was a little too fast; I couldn't see which buttons you were pushing. I'll watch that section a few more times and I'm sure I will get it eventually! PS - I just bought the EM5 a week ago, and I already love it. My old (and heavy) Canon DSLR is going to get lonely in the cabinet.

11:5 I didn't realise until today þhat the RAW file still had the original field of view and the 2x digital teleconverter was only on the jpeg, when I edited a RAW file today to try different noise reduction options on an image and they all came out with full field of view! Them I realised why the image file size is the same when you use the digital converter.
It all makes sense once you know why.

Good news is that I couldn't find any major differences between what you can do on the E-M5 Mk3 versus my older E-M5 Mk2s. The most noticeable difference is that Olympus have broken some menus into sub-menus, which groups things more logically in the newer camera. So, if anyone's using the older Mk2 E-M5 they'll need to scroll down through a longer menu, rather than having related subjects grouped together.
If any Mk2 owners spot anything I've missed, please add a comment.

I appreciate the explanations beyond what's in the manual. I think I may have to reduce capture sharpness b/c I've been getting speckles (that look like over-sharpening) in my jpgs. Your video helped me find which menu had that adjustment (and more). I chose Natural Mode. Now I'm reducing it to 0 from +1.

Probably a good idea! I think mine is on 0 anyway. Also, I was editing a RAW file in camera on my EM10 ii today. The picture was taken at a concert at ISO 1600. I tried all the noise reduction settings in RAW file edit mode and developed the RAW image to a jpeg for each: Off, Low, Normal, High. I found for that image High was best. I was surprised. I wouldn't normally use more than Low but the High setting smoothed out the skin tone and removed the speckle without smudging that particular image significantly - just softening it a little bit. It shows an advantage to shooting in RAW. I use RAW + LSF now most of the time. I also tried e-portrait mode which can also be set by using RAW edit in camera but it altered the general light level a bit but I dropped the shadows to compensate. That also de-speckled the facial features a bit. Having no computer right now, I find the in camera RAW editing very useful indeed. I usually use Natural colours as you do but if you shoot RAW, you can change that afterwards and try different settings.

In case their are some new Oly Photographers viewing, may I note; at 41mins you mention setting a special 'button fn' to return focus to HOME. It can also be done without assigning a button fn.
I found Robin Wong has indicated in shoot mode, hit any direction arrow (to bring up focus position), then solid press and hold the 'OK buttton' for a second.....bingo, the Focus setting is returned to your home position.
Having just bought the M5iii, knowing it had 3 Custom modes it is disappointing to find the custom settings will not return the "Shooting Mode" ( page 128 Oly Manual) - Quote "Recalling Saved Settings - In modes P, A, S, M, B, and C, you can recall saved settings but not the shooting mode. The shooting mode remains that currently selected with the mode dial."
EXAMPLE:
I had set C = Aperture Mode (ISO auto, my best settings)
C1 = Shutter Mode (fast shoot for birds, Pro Capture, etc)
C2 = Aperture Mode - Landscapes ( ISO set, plus others)
Sadly when I invoke C1 or C2 - Picture Mode doesn't change...another thing to remember!!!
So I have to basically turn my Mode Dial to say 'S" then recall C1 as the settings.
Whereas I thought I could leave the dial set = C and just recall C1 but no, it would leave the 'A' priority as active picture mode. Bummer!!!
Let's know anyone if you have found a work around or fix?

Hi, Dennis. Yes, press and hold works too. I have a whole video on press and hold buttons you can check out. As for a work around, I haven't found one yet. What they need to do is update the firmware so we can assign custom modes to buttons or other places on the dial.
It's April 1st and April Fool's day. Just downloaded 345 pictures from card, all JPEG instead of Raw. Updating camera as it doesn't do April jokes. Bad mistake. Watching this excellent tutorial to reset my settings. Thank you Rob for providing it.
I did that once on a paid job! Fortunately I bracket so it worked out anyway.

Very helpful tutorial as always. Most of the settings can be applied in the same way in most of the Olympus cameras. The only thing that irritates me in Olympus EM 10 II is that it doesn't spot meter from the focal point, but from the centre...always. I wish Olympus will release a firmware update to fix this issue.
BTW...the mechanical shutter on this camera sounds really weird.
Thanks. The shutter is a bit "soft", but might be due to the weather sealing dampening the sound. I don't think they'll add spot/focus metering. They are deliberately leaving things on and off cameras now. Thankfully the em10-ii still has most features.

Hi, do you know why in the em5 mk iii every time I switch from M mode to VIDEO mode the machine contains the same parameters?
Example: if I'm on M and I have 1/125 f 4 ISO 400 and step on VIDEO I find the same parameters.
Is there a way to keep them separate?

I have the EM5 III and am still watching your videos for learning many details including the front button settings. Do you have a video on sync the camera to my phone? I've scanned the bar code but this is about as far as I've made it to upload pics from camera to phone. Not that it is critical but there is usually one photo or two per day that I'd like to post or send home while on a photo trip. Thanks for all you do!

Others would make you buy their video to learn all of this about the camera. Thank you for all of your help. I had no idea you can customize this camera so much! This is helping me to choose between Olympus and Fujifilm. Is the Fujifilm as customizable as Olympus?
Fujifilm is very customizable. Olympus still has a few things that you won't find in the fujifilm, but I don't think they should impact your decision. Ask yourself what are the most important things you want from the camera. The fuji is somewhat better in low light, has their unique film simulations, and different layout of buttons and dials. The Olympus offers smaller overall system, better lens selection, and better image stabilization. For most situations, image quality is pretty much the same. I have a few vlogs comparing Fuji and Olympus that you can watch where I take the same pictures with both cameras on a photo walk.
@@RobTrek Thanks Rob. I think the film simulations are a big draw to Fujifilm. The question I have is the zooms. The Fujifnon zooms do not seem as well designed as M43, meaning more distortion, chromatic aberration, distortion, size and weight. I just want the best quality zoom between Fujinon, Zuieko, and Lumix/Leica. Any opinions? Thank you. P.S. I saw the videos of the comparisons. Thanks for doing that!
Rob, you present a lot of info very well. I enjoyed learning from your video. Tell me though, why did you choose CF when you are capturing only a still subject? What is it’s benefit over SF? Cheers, Antoine
While SF is fine for still subjects, so is CF. I shoot a variety of scenes on a typical photo walk, both still and moving. CF covers them both where SF would not.

This camera is new for me so I have watched your E-M5 III tutorials multiple times.The Olympus Instruction Manual is not exactly user friendly. One of the main problems I am having is that I can set the autofocusing target but when I try to take a photo in the A mode, the focus target box jumps around to everything except what I am trying to focus on and is not the same as I have set in the menu. I am using the A mode and a Zuiko 12-50 electronic lets because I take closeups of plants (am a botanist) and want to control the depth of field. Can you tell me what setting is causing the focus box to jump around. I would so appreciate it. Thank you.

I switched, as you suggested, from Digital ESP to Center Weighed Metering mode. With this, it seems that what you see in the live view screen it differs from the final picture obtained... Is that so?
The live view should not behave any differently regardless of metering mode. Maybe check your live view boost settings, make sure it's off for the shooting mode you're in.
Great post Rob. Just go the EM5 MIII and found out that I can't assign my customised preferences to buttons. I use to do this with my EM10 II. Do you know if there is a way to do this?
Unfortunately not. Very frustrating for me as well.
Rob, you have very strange button Fn settings :D :D
AF point selection is easy to reach even with the back cross in function mode, you just click left like on any other Olympus (XZ-1, XZ-2, Stylus, EPL-6 in my case) and you are in AF menu with point selection. Then down is drive mode without having to reach the top left controller near on/off switch. And right is flash setting directly.
That lever around AF/AE-L is useful to switch between AF-S/AF-C or AF-S/MF depending on what I shoot.
EV button is somewhat unused unless in M mode, because in aperture priority or shutter priority, it is assigned to front wheel.
I miss the on/off lever or button on right side on this camera tho. Strange decision to put up there on left. Also I'm used to use the EVF/LCD switch on Stylus1s, which is located on the right side of EVF and you can just touch it with index finger and it is switched. On EM5III the location again on upper left controller is strange. And sure, camera has sensor, but once doing waist level shots, it is still switching there and back, so I prefer button.
Also I'm missing option to just switch LCD off, but keep camera on. That can be assigned on EPL-6 if viewfinder is not attached. So you can walk around with the camera hanging on neck and ready, but it does not consume battery so fast.
Lens Info is also nice for 9mm F8 Fisheye which has no contacts (and other cap lenses).
AF limiter is very useful for macro. Or if you use macro lens for something else than macro. Aaand also for airshows to prevent telephoto lens hunting.

No, you can't recompose in C-AF, you have to move the focus point. C-AF may use slightly more battery, but not enough that I worry about it.
I was trying to set up all the custom modes for different shooting situations with my EM5 mark iii. While the C mode dial has two extra c2 and c3 functions, I don’t think you can map a function button to any of the C2 or C3 mode. It is unfortunate. Although you can recall them from the menu but that’s just too slow to be using that method when you are out and about.
Olympus should do a firmware update to let us assign the custom modes to buttons.
Hi, it seems this camera is incapable of doing auto exposure when shooting video. This problem has been reported by others including Camera Conspiracies. I’ve done a lot of research but have been unable to find a solution to this in the settings. Any ideas? Your help is much appreciated, this is an otherwise perfect camera for me.
Specifically it will do auto exposure in P,A,S modes, but (M)anual mode is full manual with no auto-iso capability. The E-M1 Mark III does have auto-iso in manual mode.

What exactly is "bracketing"? I've heard this term but never knew what it was.
Can the various "directions" on the "D" pad be customized? Also, on my Olympus Stylus 1 if I press the button in the center of the d-pad a customizable "brief" menu comes up inside my viewfinder (also on the LCD). Is this feature also available on the OM5iii?
Bracketing is simply taking 2 or more shots of the same scene, usually on a tripod, with the intent to process them later. "Exposure Bracketing" and "Focus Bracketing" are the most common. The D-Pad can be customized in the Button Menu. As for pushing the center d-pad, I think you're referring to the super control panel. Yes, that works on the EM5-III. Hope that helps. -Rob

I have the Keyboard Subject AF option turned on.
In the instructions it says that being in that option, the function of taking the focus point with the finger on the screen and the eye in the viewfinder is activated or deactivated, giving two touches on the screen.
I do not get it. Sometimes it works for me and sometimes it doesn't. And when it doesn't work for me I can't activate it by tapping the screen twice.

Thanks Rob. Have you done a video on using multiple exposure on the em5 mk 2 or 3. The em5 only has the capability of 2f as far as I know. I am new to Olympus and have never tried to shoot multiples. I would appreciate some expert help.

There are a couple of books for the older E-M5 Mk2, as well as the E-M10 Mk3, which are "helpful", but not nearly as good as Rob's video tutorials.
To be honest, even when someone releases a "How to" book on the E-M5 Mk3, I'd save your money and just post any questions you have on here. Rob will, unquestionably, give you a far more intelligible answer than any book. It's also helpful to let Rob know of any areas that need clarification.

I wanted to ask a question that you may be able to answer, it relates to my e-m1 mkii, my lcd screen matches the exposure of my final image ie if I compensate up it goes bright if I go negative it gets darker, this is how I like it but my issue is that the evf keeps the same exposure and doesn't match my final image, I may have accidentally change something like the live view boost but I can think what it is, can you help?
I want my evf like my lcd to mimic the final image,

Thanks and I hope you had a Merry Christmas! In the EVF menu, make sure S-OVF is off. That is the only setting that would make the EVF different from the Live View.

My S-OVF was as you said set to on so it was like a traditional SLR viewfinder, all sorted thanks again Rob.
Hi Rob, as usual a great video...I own both the E-M5 II and III. In my shooting setup I have the III on a tripod
using the 300 f4 pro and hand holding the II with the 75-300. It's mostly birds on a stick type but there is
still lots of action to shoot in high speed modes.
Questions...using the 5 III with the 300 f4 on a tripod what changes happen with the IS on or off? And should I shut off the camera IS as well as the lens IS? Ques 2...Both the camera manuals rate the High speed modes with IS off but give no info about speeds with it on. I shoot mostly silent mode
and figure I am getting the highest speeds available but I am curious what they are.
I know...too much time on my hands but I am curious about the differences.

Rule of thumb is to turn IS off when on a tripod. On the 300mm f/4, the IS switch turns both Lens and In-Camera stabilization ON or OFF at the same time. As for rates when IS is on, it will vary depending on how shaky the camera is.
Hi Rob, I'm back! Now I have a question about Auto-ISO. I read the EM5 Mk III tends to get noisy at >1600. Figured I'd split the difference (from 6400) & set a ceiling in the 3K range and a default of 200. But now, every shot I take on Auto-ISO is capturing at my ceiling. Is that how it's supposed to work? I assumed it would capture at ISO's anywhere from 200 up to the ceiling (3200-3500). Did I set it wrong or did I not understand the menu setting? Thx.
I suspect you're shooting at very long focal lengths. The auto iso is dependent on the focal length. Roughly, it will use double the focal length for shutter speed or higher for base iso 200. As the light drops, it will raise the iso to your set limit to maintain double the focal length shutter speed. So, for example, lets say you're in Aperture Priority, you set your iso limits between 200 and 3200 and you have correct exposure, your focal length is 100mm, iso 200, 1/200th, f/4. If the light drops by 2 stops, iso will go to 800 without changing the other settings. If the light drops by 5 stops, your iso will go to 3200, but your shutter speed will go to 1/100th. Hello! Is there a way to lock focus in video on the E-M5III? I've been using the camera for a while but haven't found what I consider a basic video option (all my Panasonic cameras can do it, as well as some of my Sony's). I know I can use manual focus before starting shooting, but that's not what I'm after.
Use S-AF. Lock focus before you start recording. If you already started recording, just half press the shutter button to lock focus again. If you zoom in/out, you may have to refocus.
@@RobTrek Thanks for your quick answer. Unfortunately, this doesn't cut it for me, as using refocusing during video using the shutter button, the camera seems to be working in contrast detection which results in an obtrusive "seeking" through the focus range instead of a smooth phase detect focusing. The only workaround I see is using the touch screen to (re)focus as it seems the camera then uses phase detection with smooth transitions instead. Very weird behavior. Also, I really miss not being able to see the focus points in video while filming. That's weird, as it works flawlessly in C-AF in photo mode.
@@JeanV1986 You should see a green box that you can move around the focus point, even while recording. You can set the size of the green box between 1-5 before you start recording and make sure the touch screen icon is on. If you're talking about the camera showing where it's focusing at any given second, that is something Olympus does not do in movie mode.
Hi Rob. I like to take portrait pictures. Normaly outside (like beaches). Many times exist 2 planes with 2 exposures. For that, normally I use external flash with HSS. Can I do the same with the M5 Mark 3??? Does It have HSS?
And also, does it have HDR???

Yes, you can use HSS compatible flashes with the E-M5iii. It does have in-camera HDR which produces a single HDR JPG and a normal exposure Raw (not hdr).

I must be doing something wrong. When I select C-AF it requires me to hold te focus button down using back-button focus. Every other camera I have just continuously adjust the focus as I move, either in photo or video modes.(except slow motion)
Unfortunately they removed the "Full Time AF" setting in photo mode. In movie mode, the C-AF does work even when not recording.

Can you navigate the menus by touch like panasonic's?
No. There is a super control panel that works by touch, but it's not much use. The menu is navigated by d-pad only.

I shot a lot of 35mm on " Pentax ME Super . " back in the day and I also shot with a beautiful old " Twin Lens Reflex " Rollie . " ! This world of digital is new to me . I just really like the feel of the little " EM5 Miii . " it feels a lot like my old Pentax in my hands ( I have small hands ) . Thanks again !

Hi Rob, Have just completed your tutorial and now find I cannot select the RAW option in image quality settings. I just want to shoot in RAW so have I set something related to JPegs?

Raw is always on and can't be turned off or on in the menu image quality settings. You need to go to the super control panel, on the bottom 2nd from the left are the file image formats. Highlight that part by using the d-pad, then rotate the front dial until you see "Raw" only displayed. It should cycle through "Raw" and "Raw+LSF" and "LSF" settings for example. Let me know if that worked. -Rob

I've certainly gained so much knowledge from your tutorials and at 70, takes a while to 'get it in' but my photography has improved exceptionally. Was using OM-D10MarkII until I upgraded to OM-E5MkIII. Then stabiliser went and after two months lost all the settings while away getting repaired. So this tutorial has been a great help. Thank you.

Thanks for the brief break down of the menus. There is a reason why you wouldn't want to buy a new version of the E-M10. They have simplified the menus and buttons where you can't customize much at all. The Mark II was quite advanced with all the customizing but it's more in the beginner's & point and shooters price range so they dumbed it down with the Mark III. However you can look at as they crippled the Mark III in order to push ones to the E-M5 & E-M1 but I think there are definitely many other features that never were available for the E-M10 that would be compelling to buy the higher end models.
There are a few things they added in the menus for sure. I think the more compelling reason is the better AF in the EM5iii and EM1ii.
I'm thinking of getting an em5 mark iii. Do you still use yours or did you upgrade?
Yes, I use it all the time. Nothing else comes in as small a package with as many features.

It's not bad but it is a kit lens. Not as sharp as a pro lens. Can't beat the versatility.

Hello. I asked this before but forgot what to do. Each shot I take plays back as all the ART views. I turned off all of them but the photos still run through about 7 of them.
Can someone help me please. I go away for 2 weeks tomorrow and was taking some practice shots and this started to happen. I don't like this camera as it is and now this happens and I like it less. thanks for any help.

OK, I set everything according to the video. One problem. The preview picture both on display and in EVF looks OK when I shoot in darker conditions, but the resulting picture is way brighter than the preview picture. Sometimes it's almost like the picture was taken during daylight. While I appreciate what the camera can do with the little light it has available, there must be something wrong in my settings. I want my dark pictures dark. :) Could someone help? Thx.
Unfortunately in low light, the live view doesn't show the final exposure. It is typically brighter as you have experienced. You can check the live view boost settings and make sure they are all turned off. This may help but generally you will always have to double check the image after you take it. Even in good light, the live view only has a +/- 3 EV range.
Hell...great video and huge help EXCEPT....I took 90+ minutes to set up camera because I have underexposed photos all the time. I took a shot and it took th shot in all the pre chosen art modes......I have no idea what happened, please HELP....anyone
Hi, Frank. It seems you have art bracketing turned on. Go into Shooting Menu #2, and make sure Bracketing is off. Let me know if that worked. -Rob

After seeing reviews in youtube, I bought money to go
local shop to buy the em5 mk3, but after holding it for a while, I came back
home with a Nikon Z50 kit. EM5 is too old fashion and feels like a toy omg…..
