I've been asked on countless videos on how to put together a decent fishing leader system. I use many different systems encompassing different styles of set-ups from varying grubs to baits, selecting hook styles, mono vs braid, etc. I've modified my many needs into 1 basic style that suits my whipping/jigging shoreline needs. Doesn't matter what type of equipment or accessories you choose as long as they work. So saying that i'll show the brands that i've relied on.

I really like the izuo fluorocarbon. Sakura included. I always stock up on that stuff when I am on island. It is one of the most reasonable quality light fluorocarbon lines around.
I really like the Sakura Fluorocarbon leaders. It's about having faith not only in yourself but also the products you use. This is a Shogun brand. When you find yourself liking and trusting a product, stick to it.

I'm glad to hear that Zamoran! Some areas require the use of longer leaders, or lighter line. Gotta be aware of the local species & topography. Younger Scads have great eyesight & longer lighter pound test fluoro is needed. Shallow reefs i prefer O'Doul style of hooks, the tip is recurved towards the shank & won't catch the reef structure as easily as the typical J-Hooks. I love whipping at night. I use 10lb braid & 8-12lb fluoro 6ft leaders (fish won't see the line).
Thanks for the tips! I was at Chocolate beach this morning around 9:00 whipping using 10lb fluorocarbon and 2" grubs (various colors). My leader was about 4ft long. Although there were fish jumping all around, I didn't get a hook up. Any suggestions for fishing that area? Thanks
I'd go 6-8ft on the leaders if you're fishing clearer waters but for that area 4ft will do as it's silted. Don't feel bad, that "Inland Sea" has taken me years to figure out. Last year large Trevally & Rays we're common. This year there's a huge abundance of Turtles whereas i haven't seen any for years. West Loch is the cleanest Loch, no sewage plants or dry docks with boat traffic. Now there's O'go seaweed & a "spinach" type of green seaweed that wasn't commonly there before. My rigs are engulfed with them. The Turtles are in for them mixed sizes. 4yrs ago was Papi'o time there. Unfortunately this year there's only the protected turtles (also A'wa "Ladyfish"). I see the A'wa on the surface early in the morning chasing fish. I see the older Filipino anglers there catching them using floats w/short leaders. Some weeks the 3-5lb Trevally are in. No Rays this year. Last year i stopped using live crab because i hated hooking them almost daily. Persistence is needed when fishing there. It's my testing grounds to hone my skills & test out new products & trying new technics. Thanks for watching my channel:)

Hook size has to at least be on a "balance" with the grub size. I caught small fish on big hooks and big fish on small hooks. Also if you're whipping i prefer hooks that are curved inwards so less chance of snagging over shallow reefs.

For night i use a lead egg to a swivel. 8-10ft of fluorocarbon leader line (can get away with 10lb for night as they can't see it, but i prefer 8lb). #9 MZ hook. I use CHL grubs that glow.

Do you have a favorite color for your grubs, or notice a certain color that works best?

Good questions. If i target Trevally Jacks i use the orange glow "oh baby". If i go for Pacific Threadfin moi i use the green glow "mune". If i want a daytime mixed bag i use the "buge". Nightime for Scads akule i use the glow blues "scuba blues". For day or night the best i found is the blue "scuba blues". A lot depends on what fish you're targeting, habitat (ie sand/reef), day or night, type of equipment used (ie mono, braid, leader lengths, etc), you're retrieval rates, etc. For my style of fishing and the places i go i prefer CHL 2in grubs & 1-1/2in minnows. Everyone must have faith in what they use and in your own abilities. What works for me may not work for you. But i'll recommend these choices & brand because they work for the way i fish. CHL are tops for me J. K. Martin . I hope they'll work for you as well.

This is a suggested method and not written in stone. For example since i made this i now like using Mutsu 1/0 circle hooks from Japan that are self-setting, factory off-set, and rarely catches the reef. Downside is taking the hook safely out from a fish that i want to release as the hook deeply imbeds itself.
scuba chris, i just started whipping on the island of big island near hilo. Great videos, truly a mentor i just started to fall in love with. I just have one question for you. As for whipping, what is the specific type of movement you prefer when reeling your leader line in and how fast do you reel it in? I've been having problems reeling the line in with the leader line getting tangled above the swivel with the egg lead attached. is there anyway to combat this problem? is it my casting technique perhaps? Great videos again, you have been a blessing upon beginners like my self. hope to hear from you soon.

There is no correct or wrong reply here. I'm always changing my retrieval style to excite the fish. Sometimes i forego the ball bearing Snap Swivels and tie my mainline directly to the swivel of my leader line. Less items to tangle.

+Mark Smith Most have rated pound classes. Depending on the areas you fish to the sizes of fish there you must adapt your equipment to your environment.
you used the japan style glass red bead. could you use any other red bead in replacement of what you use? i like that hook up and will be trying to make your set up and see how it will work for me.
Mark Raiden Like all anglers you have to have faith in your fishing supplies and in your own abilities. Faith is bred from success. I have tried many types of glass/ceramic beads. I found the inner toned flatten Japan beads to be the best! One of my bowling friends who i sometimes tutor used to own the largest bead shop in Hawaii. I've learned from her (who has toured bead factories Worldwide) that the Japanese style of bead-making is not only the best in the World but far out-strips all others (US made was the worst). The one i highlighted in this video (style#792, size#6/0) is the no#1 she told me that never hit her shelfs as expert local fishermen has always bought her out. This is a "flatten" heavy 2-tone reflective ruby red with silver ceramic interior. In other words the bead itself has weight & refracts available ambient light. Next to a glow bead the resulting "glow" is unique.

Aloha Chris, love your videos. Just started fishing after a 40 year break. Can you tell me how long those grubs are? I've had luck with 3", but I heard 2" may be even better. Mahalo
The tails are flexible. Bodies are roughly 2in. I find colors are more important than the shape. There are many brands, colors, styles out there. Time to experiment by using what you feel will work. Everyone will develope their own likes or dislikes. What works for me may not work for you. Also the retrieval speed, water clarity, using light or dark colors during cloudy or sunny days all play in. Good luck.
Also different brands are important. I use CHL because the tails are strong during strikes. They don't rip off like some other brands do.

Yesterday on eBay was the first time in years i ever purchased an Okuma item. More precisely an older Celio ML CE-C-96MLa. But brand new with tags for a good price! These older models were a bit thicker & softer. So i ended up getting a long Akule rod with backbone! The length is good too. I'll put out a vid once i receive it. By the way on eBay look-up farmandhomewholesale at www.ebay.com/str/farmandhomewholesale. They have older items but cheaply priced! And i got only $15 shipping to Hawaii on a $48 rod. Can't complain.
@@ScubaChris Thanks for the tip Chris. I actually found some ruby red beads similar to what your use on Ebay. Miyuki Seed Beads 6/0 Silver Lined Ruby Red 6-141S Glass 20g Tube Size 6 Round.. I saw a lot of comments asking for the beads. Maybe this will help. Out whipping this morning, hooked something big, bent my hook and almost pulled my split ring off of my spoon. Came home and upgraded my split rings and hooks. My Celilo was bent in half. Great fun! Have fun with your new rod.

Whipping with grubs is still my favorite fishing pastime! Instead of lead eggs i mostly use Hammer Bombs now.

I used Makata strips before. Good for Akule at night & almost any predator fish during the day. Solid product. There are many good products out there, i tried almost all of them. Spent a lot doing it as well. I love using CHL grubs for myself. For my style of fishing in the localities i frequent this brand works the best for me. You need to find what best works for you. So not to spook the fish. Certain species like younger Scad need 12-15ft of leader.

Thanks for subscribing! I hook the tip of the head to get more "action" off the grub. You can hook through the body but it greatly reduces the lures action. A lot of my earlier vids are on using grubs. Inexpensive & it really works well! Nowadays i'm more into shoreline jigging.

What's the glow thread actually called? Can't find it online anywhere, takes me to stitching and embroidery threads. I use the non-glow stuff but would like it for night trips

Found some on Amazon. Charly's was sold out. Been on Oahu for about 6 months and have had terrible luck, been trying everything! Caught one undersized papio I let go in KBay, and a couple of hawk fish. And I go a couple times a week ☹️
Howzit Chris! I appreciate your step by step approach to leader set-up. I have a question.
If the leader line is of a higher pound test, it the hook gets stuck, the main line will cut. If it cuts near the pole, won't I eventually lose more and more main line? Wait...i am guessing the knot would be the weak link?🤔
Knot is a weak point but you should make your leader weaker then the mainline. In areas i know well (deeper depths to all sand) for me i know what i can use.

Yah, I used to fish quite a lot 15 years ago and with Covid-19 and my usual hobby postponed, I decided to go back to whipping. I always use to put a lighter leader on so I wouldn't lose the whole rig. Makes sense though to use a heavier line where you are familiar with and or there is a sand bottom. Stay safe and take care.

I prefer using lead sinker eggs. weight depends on a lot of factors from type of line to depth of area. Trial and error on trying different weights. You can try using bubbles but i prefer not to.

Nah, he was more of a teacher then myself. He'd come over to dive on my boat and we'd make him tri-tip steaks for dinner. Funny guy, he'd always say people made him seafood for dinner and we gave him what he secretely desired. Lol!

Lead line? Are you referring to a dunking rig? My whipping leaders are roughly 8ft long.
Hi Chris I revisited this video for reference and didn't realize you had replied to my comment - thanks!I meant to say in your example you used 8 feet of leader line(?), I seem to have difficulty whipping out on my 7ft ugly stick GX2 when the leader line is almost as long as the rod itself, although I find using a little heavier egg weight helps a little. Just curious, with your set up, how far from the tip of rod is the egg weight when you whip it out?
is it better to use weights than the float?

For bait casting in shallow water floats are great. I wait for times of high Northerly winds so i can have the wind at my back to "spoon" out my floater rig. For whipping a lot of whippers use bubbles partially filled with water. My preference is still the lead egg.

I use CHL "Completely Hooked Lures", but any glow grubs should be good. The closest to you is Ewa Beach Buy & Sell, also Westside Dice & Tackle on Kunia.
do you often lose your grubs when you hook them like that? have you ever run the hook through the length of the grub and had the tip poke through the side?
If the fish has sharp teeth, yes it's almost certain the grub will be missing after the hit or shredded. If i use bait holder hooks i do run the grub down the shaft.
I was wondering too, is it wrong to use the same line for leader that I'm using for main line?
I'm thinking about getting a light action set up with 6lb test for whipping and using line from a spool for the leader
+Mark Smith You want to use 2 separate types of lines. I make my leaders lines stronger then my mainline. This way if it gets caught on the reef i'll only loose the leader line itself at the weakest connection (where the main line connects to the leader) instead of loosing parts of my mainline. If that happens you need to re-spool, which can be expensive.

Aloha Scuba Chris, love the videos! I'd like to know what your thoughts are about shining light on the water at night? I was taught old school that you don't shine any light but now I'm seeing and hearing stories where the lanterns are placed on the edge.

I heard the same as well. Not sure if there's merit to it to be honest. But fishing the shorelines at night if i need a light i use a battery operated lantern inside a bucket so the subdued light only illuminates the area i'm working in just to be on the safe side.

I was taught that too. But i think it really doesn't matter. For me to do film my videos at night i need to use strong 5K+ lumen rated lights. I've brought in papios, aweoweos, akule, etc right after catching others with my lights still on (a 5K 3-light lumen headband is blinding). But i do use my red light doing my preparations. Habit. Also doesn't give my location up from afar.

Are glow beads necessary for daytime? I added glow bead and red bead on top of the hook and I miss 50% of my catch because the fish bites and hold onto the beads and lets go of the hook. This happens many times so I removed the glow bead and I've been hooking up fish every time.
Not necessary. This is how i do my rigs. The reason i do both the red & glow is i can use it day or night. Never had problems with the beads interfering with hook-ups. Might be the type & size of the hooks. Nothing is written in stone, the beads & threads are add-ons. If you feel you don't need them then it's ok. Colors, sizes, style must reflect not only your style but the species you target and the localities you visit. So if removing all the beads work, then you modyfied this system to work for you. That's fishing. Good job:)

what's a good size pole for whipping or what rod and reel are you using in this video
I like to use the Okuma T40X 10'9", TICA 9'6" Galant, TICA SS 10'6" & Hawaiian Custom 12'. No right or wrong answers here, i've stored away the ones i've tried but found not useable for the way i fish. The TX40X series i found to be sensitive for smaller species but still can bring in 30lb Rays. The TICA's i found a bit stiffer, more on the medium sized fish 3-8lb for whipping. The Haw'n Custom has handled good sized O'io and Papio. For heavier whipping needs i use a 13'4" IRW & a 10'6" + 11' Daiwa Coastal. I really like the IRW. Lightweight with a strong backbone. I went out early this morning and got a nice 7lb Omilu on the IRW with a 5500 Ultegra. My favorite whipping reels are Shimano CI4's, Stradics & NASCI"s. In the video i used a 3K CI4 with a 7'9" T40X.

Depends what i'm targeting and the type of area i'm working. Daytime i prefer my 10'9" TX40 with 8lb mono on a CI4 4K. Nightime it's a 7'9" TX40 off the rocks with a 3K Stradic with 5lb Spectra. But i always try to mix it up.

I chuck the baits just behind the whitewater along the shoreline. They patrol the shorelines. If i get one whipping i try to let it stay in the water as they are in small groups. Once you haul it out of the water the rest of the school take off.

Ok, for me i use the UV glow day or night. For the areas i fish i like Scuba Blues, Oh Baby & Mune. Doesn't matter water conditions or time of day. Heard a lot of good catches using LOT during the days as well. I like the new style BUGZ. Remember these are my favs for the way i fish at my locations. May differ for others.
