A couple of weeks ago, I was driving with my wife, Emma, and we passed a China Garden with a classic car sitting in the parking lot. Behind the car, walking to the restaurant, was a classy-dressed man with a hat on. I wasn't going to stop, but Emma convinced me to turn around and ask him for a portrait. I did just that, and what followed were multiple meet-ups and talks with Franklin.

These are the types of videos you'll look back on 20, 30, 40 years down the road and be glad you made. Same goes for the photos. Documenting interesting people at a specific stage in their life and hearing the stories they have to tell. That's what it's all about.
I’m already looking back at my old videos and thanking my old self that I made them. Doesn’t feel that way in the thick of it but just have to give it time.
Dude, THIS is how you uplift and help someone else share their story. Bravo.
Thank you. Really appreciate it!
Well done Bryan, You captivated the true essence of Franklin.
What a beautiful soul you are, indeed Franklin.
🖤
Franklin talking about his passion is a beautiful thing. What he said about finding & sharing our gifts with one another is a beautiful thing. I consider this video a gift from you & Franklin, to us. Thank you Bryan!
Absolutely! Glad you enjoyed it.
Two right man at the right place ....., this is a wonderfull doku/portrait !
So impressive, joyful and moving. The portrait at 4:30 is simply sensational in my opinion. I find it extremely tender and (again) moving with the context given by the environment. It is extremely well complemented by the one at 11:15.
This and the narrative makes this short film an uplifting gem.
This was charming, everything photography and RUclips should be! Thanks for your hard work.
There are beautiful souls in this world. Thank you for sharing.
I agree completely. Thanks for watching 🖤
A wonderful short story of Franklin. Everything was well done with this and then the ending was tied up with the perfect bow. You could feel every ounce of energy Franklin put out to the world People like this make the world a better place. Thanks for sharing. Didn’t think I was going to tear up today, haha.
Thanks for watching, Nathan 🍻
I love this. Reminds me that there are so many wonderful people out there. I often need that reminder.
So many people and so little time!
Bryan. What you produce is very special. Believe it.
Thank you kindly!
Well done, Birksy! This was a beautiful documentation of Franklin
Thank you, Robbie 🍻
Thanks for sharing this gift with my world.
My pleasure, John 🍻
Favorite video yet. Thank you for giving Franklin the platform to share his perspective with us, that man is a gift himself. Beautiful portraits too.
Thanks, dude. I am challenging myself to be as positive as Franklin.
Its so nice to hear someone speak so passionately, this is really uplifting and inspiring the PMA I needed. Thanks for always putting out great content!
Glad you enjoyed it!
wow, the last picture and i kid you not gave me goosebumps.
🖤🖤🖤
Wow, just fantastic Bryan! Quite touching to listen to this guy’s passion in his voice🙏🏼
Thanks, Teo!
What a passport the camera is, you found your way into this man’s life with it and that’s a real gift. This video is an extension of those great portraits. Love it.
It’s amazing but also a little overwhelming knowing that there are so many stories to potentially tell.
Hopefully the mass majority of photographers can start pivoting from the reels, tik toks, and “content” to use photography to tell more stories.
This touched me for sure. I’m so happy you had the opportunity to sit and talk with Franklin and share his story through your own craft. You inspire me and so did this video. 💗
Thank you toots 🖤
This is the Bryan Birks video I
Few and far between. But working on that!
Incredible! Man, you sure know how to tell a story in the most fascinating way. It draws in the viewer in closer and closer. Thanks for sharing your gift.
I have to thank Franklin for the story on this one. He's a wonderful person.
I wish Avedon & Penn had done stuff like this. I'm imagining how much more rewarding it would be to see those classic portraits with some context. In this case your portraits would already shine as great but the brief introduction to Franklin's life & philosophy just enhances everything. He isn't just some cool dude on the street. More layers than an onion. Truly inspirational stuff, thank you. Now then...approaching people in my City with a 5x4. It's long overdue.."Hi...erm.."
Glad it could inspire! Now get out there and make some work 🍻
I really loved this one Bryan. While it was about photography, it was also about so much more. Well done!!
Happy to hear you got that out of it. I did as well!
Man this is the production of good fruit as a result of all your labours. This one is special.
Appreciate it, sir!
Franklin's passion is infectious; thanks for that! I quite liked the part about the unique thrift store items that just need a little attention to bring them to life; almost like a metaphor for his story ✌
Yes. A metaphor for a lot of things. He spoke to many things that I feel about the photography RUclips space.
You managed to capture his look, the one when he was feeling emotional, talking at the end, in that last portrait. Great video.
Thanks for the kind words 🍻
I love the color portrait, the one that includes a car. Great. Full 4*5 feeling.
I took more that time but saving some for the car project 🍻
What a wonderful story leading to a wonderful story. This is a beautiful person presented beautifully. I was drawn in and not let go. Your photography is a gift. Your translation of this gift into video is also a special gift. That translation turns this into an experience. I’m struggling a bit attempting to produce words which express emotion. But, there you have it. What a joyous story. Thank you Bryan, Emma, and Franklin.
Thank you, John!
Terrific. The part about finding your gift and making that your job is such a great message.
Bravo! This is what I call 'a portrait'!. Superb!
Many thanks! Cheers.
Just a big, big thank you Bryan. I had a tough day today, and came home to see this wonderful video.
Very, very welcome. Thanks for the support.
Quite simply outstanding work. What a guy!
Thank you kindly. 🖤
Incredible video, a fantastic story from Franklin, and great editing! Truly brought tears to my eyes as a working photojournalist who has never "worked" a day in his life. This story was inspirational, awestriking, and downright soul-touching. Thank you for blessing my watch time with such an amazing piece of content! Cheers to you, and kudos to your work; keep striving for awsome stories like these!
Thank you for the very kind words! I knew right from the start that I would want to talk to Franklin. Just glad he agreed!
Give this man a Times story and then BOOM, dude becomes a full-blown documentarian from pillar to post. This is a masterpiece.
Haha thank you thank you. 🙏🏻
Beautiful message with impeccable timing and excellent photography to accompany.
Happy to hear that. Thank you.
I don’t comment on videos, but there’s something to be said here. The way you told this man’s story, the sensibility, the openness, it was amazing. It made the portrait that much more impactful. My favorite of your videos. It would be great to see more like this in the future.
Really appreciate that! I am always looking for people to talk to. Gotta find the time to make it right tho!
This was beautiful on every level! What a kind and lovely soul he is. Thank you to him for allowing you to share his story, and thank you for sharing it in a very well crafted manner.
Thank YOU for watching.
This is incredible my man. What an interesting and amazing guy and your portraits of him are wonderful.
Thanks, Nathan.
The crazy thing is that there are thousands, or millions of people out there with stories like this. We just have to find them.
What a beautiful portrait your video was of this person (also nice large format photography). Be proud!
You're flourishing & its wonderful to see. This video was really touching & made your photos all the more valuable.
Thank you so much!
This is a masterpiece.......I loved every minute of it. And the portraits captured Franklin's soul. GREAT WORK!
Watching this reminded me of the importance of using photography to tell people's stories. It's a wonderful, personal medium, especially with large format. Thank you for making and sharing this video.
Yes. Whole heartedly agree. Too many people out there without their stories told.
Such a fantastic video. The portrait captured what a beautiful human being Franklin is.
Couldn't agree more. Thanks for watching.
I'm impressed, the story, the photographs and your passion on it

Thank you! Glad to have you around 🍻
this is a really beautiful video bryan!, really great message that i think alot of people are going to connect to and appreciate.
Appreciate it!
This interview, cinematography, editing, and still photography is fantastic. My opinion is; I would expect you graduated at the top of your communications major. You are so talented and your still so young. You have a great future ahead of you!
Appreciate the kind words!
Not the best student and graduated with a mediocre 2.7 GPA. I did the bare minimum for my classes and skipped class too much. I was young and stupid. Still am but just not as much. 🍻
That’s pretty funny! Actually your quiet gifted. I wish you great success!
Beautiful
Beautiful video, Bryan.
Thank you kindly 🖤
Really just so much good stuff here, on many levels.
Glad you think so. Thanks for watching.
Aww wow I love this ❤ I agree with everything you said, love you big bro, your lil sis suki 😂😊
I love this approach to your videos, so soulful. Really love it.
Thank you. I appreciate that. I watch a lot of RUclips photography and most of it is lacking just that…soul. So your words mean a lot.
@@BryanBirks you definitely have an original voice, rooting for you my guy!
So good.

Thank you! Cheers!
A wonderful video, thanks for creating and sharing
Just doing my best. Appreciate it. Thanks for watching!
Hello Brian. Great video, wonderful colours, really interessting story, very nice light, good music! Thanx for this vey special story. One question, could you please ask Franklin, why he does not let tune his piano? It is completely off, and the higher the tones the more awfull it sounds. Please, if you see him again, ask him (from me) to let his piano tune from a Professional piano tuner. However thanx again for this great and very nice video about a very special person i would like to meet, but I live very far away (Switzerland) . 👍
All good. He told me it wasn’t in tune but I said verbatim “nobody will care about that.”
@@BryanBirks Ah, o.k. and thanx for this information. 🙂
Does Franklin has a channel or anything else?
